Using Amazon Mechanical Turk To Transcribe Historical Handwritten Documents, Andrew Lang, Joshua Rio-Ross Oct 2011

Using Amazon Mechanical Turk To Transcribe Historical Handwritten Documents, Andrew Lang, Joshua Rio-Ross

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

The developing “information age” is continually unraveling new ways of discovering, presenting and sharing information. Most new academic material is digitally formatted upon its creation and is thus easy to find and query. However, there remains a good deal of material from times prior to the “information age” that has yet to be converted to digital form. Much of this material can be found in library collections—whether academic, public or private—and thus remains available only to a limited number of locals or willing-and-able sojourners. Using OCR technology, most typeset documents can be digitized and made available online; and there are …

Continual Evolution: The Experience Over Three Semesters Of A Librarian Embedded In An Online Evidence-Based Medicine Course For Physician Assistant Students, Shannon Kealey

Staff publications, research, and presentations

This column examines the experience, over three years, of a librarian embedded in an online Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine course, which is a requirement for students pursing a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Pace University. Student learning outcomes were determined, a video lecture was created, and student learning was assessed via a five-point test during year one. For years two and three, the course instructor asked the librarian to be responsible for two weeks of the course instruction and a total of 15 out of 100 possible points for the course. This gave the librarian flexibility to …

Absolute Properties Of The Eclipsing Binary Star Hy Virginis, Claud H. Sandberg Lacy, Francis C. Fekel Oct 2011

Absolute Properties Of The Eclipsing Binary Star Hy Virginis, Claud H. Sandberg Lacy, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

HY Vir is found to be a double-lined F0m+F5 binary star with relatively shallow (0.3 mag) partial eclipses. Previous studies of the system are improved with 7509 differential photometric observations from the URSA WebScope and 8862 from the NFO WebScope, and 68 high-resolution spectroscopic observations from the Tennessee State University 2 m automatic spectroscopic telescope, and the 1 m coudé-feed spectrometer at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Very accurate (better than 0.5%) masses and radii are determined from analysis of the new light curves and radial velocity curves. Theoretical models match the absolute properties of the stars at an age of …

Pump-Probe Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging Of Autoionizing Singly Excited 4s14p6np1(N=7,8) And Doubly Excited 4s24p45s16p1 Resonances In Atomic Krypton, Benjamin Doughty, Louis H. Haber, Stephen R. Leone Oct 2011

Pump-Probe Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging Of Autoionizing Singly Excited 4s14p6np1(N=7,8) And Doubly Excited 4s24p45s16p1 Resonances In Atomic Krypton, Benjamin Doughty, Louis H. Haber, Stephen R. Leone

Faculty Publications

Pump-probe photoelectron velocity-map imaging, using 27-eV high-harmonic excitation and 786-nm ionization, is used to resolve overlapping autoionizing resonances in atomic krypton, obtaining two-photon photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) for singly and doubly excited states. Two features in the photoelectron spectrum are assigned to singly excited 4s14p6np1 (n = 7,8) configurations and four features provide information about double excitation configurations. The anisotropy parameters for the singly excited 7p configuration are measured to be β2 = 1.61 ± 0.06 and β4 = 1.54 ± 0.16 while the 8p configuration gives β2 = 1.23 ± 0.19 and β4 = 0.60 ± 0.15. These anisotropies …

The Fairmount Initiative Quarterly Progress Report: People And Places: Understanding The Processes, Outcomes And Impacts Of Interventions Of The Fairmount Corridor, Donna H. Friedman

Center for Social Policy Publications

The Boston Foundation has contracted with the Center for Social Policy as an analytical and evaluation partner for a five year period, December 1, 2010 to November 30, 2015, to maximize effectiveness and create alignment among its people and place based efforts in Boston’s Fairmount commuter rail corridor. The geographic area, encompassing Fairmount neighborhoods which are home to approximately 88,000 residents, extends for 9.2 miles from the Newmarket Transit Station in the north to the Readville Transit Station in the south.

The detail to follow in this report provides an overview of each of the four initiatives, its progress over …

Cuban Medical Internationalism: A Case For International Solidarity In Foreign Policy Decision Making, Eric James Fiske Oct 2011

Cuban Medical Internationalism: A Case For International Solidarity In Foreign Policy Decision Making, Eric James Fiske

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the beginning of the Revolutionary government in Cuba, a comprehensive foreign policy involving medical personal and equipment has been implemented worldwide. Known as medical internationalism, thousands of doctors have been sent to developed and less developed nations in the spirit of solidarity and humanitarian aid. Even more, thousands of students have been given free medical education in Cuba at its world renowned university, the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM). Often, no monetary or direct political gain is made by Cuba and the doctors simply receive their normal government salary. While the success of Cuba's medical internationalism is well …
