Relative Effectiveness Of Indonesian Policy Choices During Financial Crisis, Tumpak Silalahi, Tevy Chawwa
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
The objective of this paper is to review the impact of crisis and policy measures taken during the crisis, to evaluate the effectiveness of those measures and to analyze the exit strategy in Indonesia. The econometric model was used to evaluate the impact of monetary and fiscal policy to economic output using quarterly data from 1990 - 2010. The result shows that monetary and fiscal policies have significant impact to economic output. In the short run the changes in real GDP is significantly affected by changes in real monetary supply in the previous three quarter and real fiscal expenditures. The …

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
The Board of Governor Meeting of Bank Indonesia on October 11, 2011 decided to lower the BI rate by 25 bps to the level of 6.5%. Bank Indonesia will also maintain the stabilization of Rupiah particularly from the impact of global financial market shock. The decision is in line with the inflation expectation of below 5% on current and next year. Furthermore, these policies are meant to anticipate and to mitigate the negative impact of the global economic and financial slowdown on Indonesian economy. Looking ahead, the Board of Governor will continue to evaluate the global economic and financial performance …

Does Multicultural Indonesia Include Its Ethnic Chinese?, Dewi Anggraeni
Does Multicultural Indonesia Include Its Ethnic Chinese?, Dewi Anggraeni
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Multiculturalism in Indonesia is predominantly concerned with various regional cultures in the country, which continue to exist, and in some cases, to develop and progress. These cultures meet and interact in the context of a unitary national, Indonesian culture. There are however people who or whose ancestors originate from outside Indonesia, the major ones being Chinese and Arabs. They brought with them the cultures and mores of their lands of origin and to varying degrees integrated them into those of the places they adopted as homes. This article discusses how the Chinese who opted for Indonesian citizenship and nationality, fared …
Reasoning In A Multicultural Society, Donny Gahral Adian
Reasoning In A Multicultural Society, Donny Gahral Adian
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Multicultural society as a way of being-with-others needs a certain form of public reasoning. Unfortunately, the current yet dominant form of public reasoning is infiltrated by biases from occidental culture. This mode of reasoning does nothing but uproot participants from their cultural identity for the sake of universal consensus. Multicultural society, however, consists of identities which are embedded in the individuals' cultural tradition. This sociological fact demands a richer form of rationality that does not deny the multiplicity of cultural values and embedded identities. We need a form of public reasoning which emphasizes cultural understanding rather than abstract consensus. We …

Patterns In Shoreline Vegetation And Soils Around Lake Mohave, Nevada And Arizona: Implications For Management, Nita Tallent, Maliha Nash, Chad L. Cross, Lawrence R. Walker
Western North American Naturalist
Lake Mohave, on the lower Colorado River in Nevada and Arizona, was created by the construction of Davis Dam for power generation, flood control, and water supply. Management has led to the periodic lowering of the water level of the reservoir (drawdown), such that it reveals a gradient of zones around the margins of the reservoir that range from frequently inundated to frequently dry. The initial filling of Lake Mohave flooded the preexisting native riparian woodlands of Populus-Salix (cottonwood-willow), creating a new shoreline and plant community. We analyzed the spatial distribution of the plant species that dominate the plant community …

The Global Common Good And The Future Of Academic Professionals, Genevieve G. Shaker
Higher Learning Research Communications
In this epilogue to the special issue of Higher Learning Research Communications dedicated to higher education, community engagement, and the public good, Shaker addresses the unifying concept presented across the issue: the common good. For Shaker, this special issue responds to UNESCO’s call for educational institutions and educators to rethink education in the contemporary era and focuses on how academic endeavors can, do, and should act in service to a global common good. The essay stresses the academic workforce needs to be reimagined concurrently with rethinking the systems of education that will ensure the world and society “to which we …

소비자 휴리스틱을 통한 인지적 발달 관점에서의 브랜드, Woon Bong Na, Roger Marshall, Young Seok Son
Asia Marketing Journal
The focus of this paper is to investigate cognitive development of brand heuristics in the mind of a young consumer as the consumer matures. This issue was examined by comparing the nature of the set of associations (that form the brand heuristic) given by consumers across four different age groups, with each age group representing a distinct stage of cognitive maturity. It is found that there are fundamental differences in the way the different age groups perceive the brand. The research method uses the novel approach of classifying the elicited associations into the three types of brand associations: attributes, benefits …
Notes On Borrowing And Convergence, Robert L. Tsai, Nelson Tebbe
Notes On Borrowing And Convergence, Robert L. Tsai, Nelson Tebbe
Faculty Scholarship
This is a response to Jennifer E. Laurin, "Trawling for Herring: Lessons in Doctrinal Borrowing and Convergence," 111 Colum. L. Rev. 670 (2011), which analyzes the Supreme Court's resort to tort-based concepts to limit the reach of the Fourth Amendment's exclusionary rule. We press three points. First, there are differences between a general and specific critique of constitutional borrowing. Second, the idea of convergence as a distinct phenomenon from borrowing has explanatory potential and should be further explored. Third, to the extent convergence occurs, it matters whether concerns of judicial administration or political reconstruction are driving doctrinal changes.

Understanding And Teaching Unequal Probability Of Selection, Humberto Barreto, Manu Raghav
Understanding And Teaching Unequal Probability Of Selection, Humberto Barreto, Manu Raghav
School of Business and Leadership Working Papers
This paper focuses on econometrics pedagogy. It demonstrates the importance of including probability weights in regression analysis using data from surveys that do not use simple random samples (SRS). We use concrete, numerical examples and simulation to show how to effectively teach this difficult material to a student audience. We relax the assumption of simple random sampling and show how unequal probability of selection can lead to biased, inconsistent OLS slope estimates. We then explain and apply probability weighted least squares, showing how weighting the observations by the reciprocal of the probability of inclusion in the sample improves performance. The …

Psychiatrists' Knowledge And Attitudes About The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Carol L. Alter, M.D., Ellen S. Dickinson, M.D., Greg Miller, M.D.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Since 1981 the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has become the primary health care issue in this nation. Psychiatrists have had a central role in caring for AIDS patients: they have been asked to evaluate and treat patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations of AIDS and emotional reactions to the illness itself, as well as to treat those who are fearful of acquiring AIDS. Numerous studies in the literature have explored the physician and lay population's knowledge and attitudes about AIDS. To date no study has addressed these issues in psychiatrists in specific (1- 9).
Most studies suggest that individuals who have …

We use newly constructed state-specific data to explore the implications of common modeling choices for measures of research returns. Our results indicate that state-to-state spillover effects are important, that the research and development lag is longer than many studies have allowed, and that misspecification can give rise to significant biases. Across states, the average of the own-state benefit-cost ratios is 21:1, or 32:1 when the spillover benefits to other states are included. These ratios correspond to real internal rates of return of 9 or 10 per annum, much smaller than those typically reported in the literature, partly because we have …
