A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2011

A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical planning is an approach of planning by composing and executing hierarchically arranged plans to solve some problems. Most symbolic-based hierarchical planners have been devised to allow the knowledge to be described expressively. However, a great challenge is to automatically seek and acquire new plans on the fly. This paper presents a novel neural-based model of hierarchical planning that can seek and acquired new plans on-line if the necessary knowledge are lacking. Inspired by findings in neuropsychology, plans can be inherently learnt, retrieved, and manipulated simultaneously rather than discretely processed like in most symbolic approaches. Using a multi-channel adaptive resonance …

Does Recreational Reading In Native Language Influence Foreign Language Learning Process?, Selami Aydin

The Qualitative Report

Limited studies have been conducted on the effects on recreational reading in native language on foreign language learning, whereas no findings exist on the effects of recreational reading in Turkish as a native language (L1) on English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effects of recreational reading in L1 on the process of learning EFL. The sample group consists of 70 learners and a background questionnaire, interviews, oral presentations, classroom discussions, essay papers, and responses to examination questions were used for data collection. The results indicated that recreational reading in L1 has some …

Ten Steps For Conceptualizing And Conducting Qualitative Research Studies In A Pragmatically Curious Manner, Ronald J. Chenail Nov 2011

Ten Steps For Conceptualizing And Conducting Qualitative Research Studies In A Pragmatically Curious Manner, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

In a world of methodological pluralism and mixed-methods, qualitative researchers can take a pathway of pragmatic curiosity by exploring their research interests and the possible design and methodology choices to create studies that not only allow them to pursue their investigative curiosities, but also result in coherent and effective systems of procedural choices. Ten steps are offered for researchers to conceive and conduct qualitative research projects that are both responsive to research goals and objectives and defendable to criteria of quality and critics of utility.

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa Nov 2011

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Experience and observations have revealed that most archives and libraries in Africa today are filled with materials recorded in analogue formats and the traditional or analogue librarians and archivists are those who are still carrying out the tasks of acquiring, organizing, and preserving the print documents and helping the readers in locating the information they need.

In developing countries this picture has rapidly changed due to the influence of advances in computer technology. The physical materials are gradually giving way to electronic print, and online public access catalogue (OPAC) is obliterating the needs for users to physically visit the library …

Indian Lis Literature In International Journals With Specific Reference To Ssci Database: A Bibliometric Study, Pallab Pradhan, Rajesh Chandrakar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Scholarly communication is the process by which scholars and scientists conduct their research and make that research works and results known to the world. It plays an important role for the advancement of knowledge and a scholar's future prospect. History is the witness about the changing process of scholarly communication from oral representation to written, than to print, and now to the electronic (on-line).

In the formal process of scholarly communication; researchers, basis on the work of others, write up their own research findings and give those research papers essentially without charge to publishers. In turn, publishers manage the peer-review …

An Exploratory Study Of Indian Science And Technology Publication Output, G. Buchandiran Nov 2011

An Exploratory Study Of Indian Science And Technology Publication Output, G. Buchandiran

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The contribution of a nation to research promotes the knowledge building process. Understanding the research contribution of a nation is the basic component in science policy. In reality, science auditing is a complex process. The science policy makers employ a large number of science indicators - not all are equally important. Metrics employed in this study are not comprehensive as they are limited to scientific publications. Science auditing is not confined to a small set of indicators. To arrive at a broad science policy, we need to use many other indicators.

The paper presents the data and analyses and the …

Information Communication Techonology (Ict) Use As A Predictor Of Lawyers’ Productivity, J.E. Owoeye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information Communication Technology (ICT) is an umbrella term that includes all technologies for the manipulation and communication of information. The work of legal practitioners involves a high level of documentation and information processing, storage, and retrieval. The information intensiveness of a lawyer’s responsibility is such that tools and technologies that would speed up the documentation, management and information handling are not only important but professionally necessary. The value of accuracy, correctness, completeness, relevance and timeliness are characteristics of information which ICT systems do generate to meet lawyer’s information needs.

The role of lawyers in any society is essential. In the …

Staffing Patterns Of State Colleges Of Education Libraries In Nigeria, Gabriel Olatunde Onifade, F.N. Onifade

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The College of Education system is one of the tripods of tertiary education in Nigeria and it has the primary role of training teachers who will be awarded the minimum teaching qualification of Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE). This certificate qualifies one to teach in junior secondary schools and technical colleges in Nigeria and it takes three years to complete. These teachers’ institutions were formally known as Advanced Teachers’ Colleges and were affiliated to different universities in Nigeria. They were later transformed into Colleges of Education under the supervision of one umbrella body known as the National Commission for Colleges …

Finite-Width Gap Excitation And Impedance Models, Yat Hei Lo, Shiquan He, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew Nov 2011

Finite-Width Gap Excitation And Impedance Models, Yat Hei Lo, Shiquan He, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a new method for the feed model for the method of moments (MoM). It is derived from a more accurate model with the realistic size of the excitation, in order to replace the commonly-used delta-gap excitation model. This new model is formulated around the electric field integration equations (EFIE) where the terms for magnetic current and magnetic field can be removed. Hence it is much simpler to implement and reduces the numerical complexity. In addition, a variational formulation is derived to provide second order accuracy of the input admittance calculation. Moreover, this new formulation can …

Most, if not all, disk galaxies have a thin (classical) disk and a thick disk. In most models thick disks are thought to be a necessary consequence of the disk formation and/or evolution of the galaxy. We present the results of a study of the thick disk properties in a sample of carefully selected edge-on galaxies with types ranging from T = 3 to T = 8. We fitted one-dimensional luminosity profiles with physically motivated functions—the solutions of two stellar and one gaseous isothermal coupled disks in equilibrium—which are likely to yield more accurate results than other functions used in …

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy Nov 2011

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this paper we present a Hashed-Path Traveling Salesperson Problem (HPTSP), a new type of problem which has the interesting property of having no polynomial time solutions. Next we show that HPTSP is in the class NP by demonstrating that local information about sub-routes is insufficient to compute the complete value of each route. As a consequence, via Ladner"s theorem, we show that the class NPI is non-empty.

Apples And Oranges: Securities Market Losses Should Be Treated Differently For Major White-Collar Criminal Sentencing Under The Federal Guidelines, John D. Esterhay Nov 2011

Apples And Oranges: Securities Market Losses Should Be Treated Differently For Major White-Collar Criminal Sentencing Under The Federal Guidelines, John D. Esterhay

Missouri Law Review

Part II analyzes the history of market loss, a calculation of loss that arose as a damage calculation in private plaintiff civil securities fraud actions. This Part describes the evolving theory of loss causation in order to understand the foundation for market loss at criminal sentencing. This Part also explains how market loss might have been used in sentencing before the Guidelines. After the codification of the Guidelines, victim loss became the official driving factor in fraud sentencing. Thus, Part III examines the loss table and how a large loss finding leads to a long prison term recommendation. Because the …

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper Nov 2011

Sticks And Stones: Iied And Speech After Snyder V. Phelps, Heath Hooper

Missouri Law Review

On March 3, 2006, Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder died while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. After hearing of his funeral, members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church attended and protested the Maryland ceremony bearing graphic photos and signs declaring "Thank God for IEDs" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." The church members did so in reflection of their religious belief that God has doomed America and its military missions because of the country's tolerance for homosexuality. Following the protest, Matthew Snyder's father, Albert Snyder, sued the Westboro Baptist Church for a variety of civil wrongs, including intentional …

Cost Of A Tax Agenda: The Passage Of Proposition A And Its Effect On Kansas City And St. Louis City, The, Missy Mccoy

Missouri Law Review

This Law Summary begins with a discussion of the history of the earnings tax in Kansas City and St. Louis City starting with both cities' designations as home rule cities.10 Being home rule cities allowed them independence in governing their populace and the eventual implementation of an earnings tax through city charters and state enabling statutes. Next, this Law Summary discusses Proposition A's repeal of the previous enabling statutes, the institution of new statutes, and the prohibition of any other city from passing an earnings tax. This Law Summary takes the position that Proposition A, funded largely by St. Louis-area …

Do I Own This Car - The Supreme Court Creates A Standard For Bapcpa Car Ownership, Anne Benton Hucker Nov 2011

Do I Own This Car - The Supreme Court Creates A Standard For Bapcpa Car Ownership, Anne Benton Hucker

Missouri Law Review

The case was Ransom v. FIA Card Services, N.A., and the dispute was whether, under the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA), Appellant Jason Ransom should be able to claim a vehicle ownership expense for purposes of Chapter 13 bankruptcy for the unencumbered car that he owned. Practitioners in the bankruptcy field had been watching the progression of this case and were eager to learn the Court's resolution of the issue. The interest was due to two reasons. First, the outcome of the case would affect approximately 250,000 Chapter 13 petitioners. Second, the case would resolve …

Life Without Parole, Or A Juvenile Death Sentence, Kyle Gottuso

Missouri Law Review

Part II of this Note will look at the court's decision to allow juveniles to be sentenced to life without parole. In doing so, this Note will outline the policies underlying the U.S. Supreme Court's Eighth Amendment jurisprudence. Next, Part III of this Note will survey more broadly the U.S. Supreme Court's interpretation of the Eighth Amendment in terms of life without parole as well as death penalty cases. Part IV of this Note will then look at the reasoning of the majority and the dissent in the instant case. Finally, Part V of this Note will attempt to reconcile …

Minimizing Bias In Biomass Allometry: Model Selection And Log‐Transformation Of Data, Joseph Mascaro, Creighton M. Litton, R. Flint Hughes, Amanda Uowolo, Stefan A. Schnitzer Nov 2011

Minimizing Bias In Biomass Allometry: Model Selection And Log‐Transformation Of Data, Joseph Mascaro, Creighton M. Litton, R. Flint Hughes, Amanda Uowolo, Stefan A. Schnitzer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Nonlinear regression is increasingly used to develop allometric equations for forest biomass estimation (i.e., as opposed to the traditional approach of log‐transformation followed by linear regression). Most statistical software packages, however, assume additive errors by default, violating a key assumption of allometric theory and possibly producing spurious models. Here, we show that such models may bias stand‐level biomass estimates by up to 100 percent in young forests, and we present an alternative nonlinear fitting approach that conforms with allometric theory.

Windows Driver Memory Analysis: A Reverse Engineering Methodology, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson Nov 2011

Windows Driver Memory Analysis: A Reverse Engineering Methodology, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

In a digital forensics examination, the capture and analysis of volatile data provides significant information on the state of the computer at the time of seizure. Memory analysis is a premier method of discovering volatile digital forensic information. While much work has been done in extracting forensic artifacts from Windows kernel structures, less focus has been paid to extracting information from Windows drivers. There are two reasons for this: (1) source code for one version of the Windows kernel (but not associated drivers) is available for educational use and (2) drivers are generally called asynchronously and contain no exported functions. …

Infrared And Upconversion Spectroscopic Studies Of High Er3+Content Transparent Yag Ceramic, M. Pokhrel, G. A. Kumar, P. Samuel, K. I. Ueda, T. Yanagitani, H. Yagi, D. K. Sardar

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

In this article, we report the detailed spectroscopic studies of high Er3+content (50%) transparent YAG ceramic co-doped with nominal Cr3+ content (0.1 mol %). Various radiative and non-radiative spectroscopic properties such as radiative decay time, fluorescence branching ratio, emission/absorption cross sections, internal radiative quantum yields of the infrared and the upconverted emission bands are explored using standard experimental and theoretical methods and compared with YAG single crystal. Results show that although the non-radiative losses are high for 50% Er doped ceramic; several radiative spectral properties are almost in agreement with those for the single crystal YAG. Furthermore, because of the …

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Young choral directors who wish to learn everything about Haydn’s masses should first consult this up-to-date and information-packed book. (This reviewer did not say “read” because the background histories and music analyses are very detailed and, as a result, the volume is inordinately long – and not a book easily read through from cover to cover.)

Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony: The Musical Aftermath Of An Anecdote, Christine Siegert Nov 2011

Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony: The Musical Aftermath Of An Anecdote, Christine Siegert

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

The compositional response to Haydn’s works in the second half of the twentieth century has up to this point scarcely been investigated. Understandably, it focuses on Haydn’s more prominent works. An examination reveals that the reception of the “Farewell Symphony“ plays an exceptional role inasmuch as it forms not only the musical basis of works by Alfred Schnittke, Jindřich Feld, Kirke Mechem, George Crumb and other composers, but the “pantomime” (Georg August Griesinger) elements of the first performance, as told in the anecdote, are turned into performative actions in reception: the light’s extinction and the musicians’ departure. Analysis of Frank …

Teaching Rule Synthesis With Real Cases, Paul Figley Nov 2011

Teaching Rule Synthesis With Real Cases, Paul Figley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Rule synthesis is the process of integrating a rule or principle from several cases. It is a skill attorneys and judges use on a daily basis to formulate effective arguments, develop jurisprudence, and anticipate future problems. Teaching new law students how to synthesize rules is a critical component in training them to think like lawyers.

This article suggests how rule synthesis might be taught in one classroom session using real cases. It advocates a three-part approach. First, explain the nature of rule synthesis to the students. Second, do a whimsical exercise with them to show how rule synthesis works. Finally, …

Treatment Outcomes And Medication Compliance For Children And Adolescents, 30 Days Post-Discharge From An In-Patient Psychiatric Hospital, Jan Talley Nov 2011

Treatment Outcomes And Medication Compliance For Children And Adolescents, 30 Days Post-Discharge From An In-Patient Psychiatric Hospital, Jan Talley

Faculty and Staff Publications

A variety of authors have suggested that children and adolescents are at risk for serious adverse health outcomes because of a lack of compliance with medication regimens. A lack of compliance includes taking less or more medication than prescribed, and taking medication at the wrong times. One study that examined the medication compliance of 81 students who were 10 years of age or older, and were enrolled in a school-based health center, determined that only 45 students (56%) filled the prescription given to them by the doctor. Of those students who filled the prescription, 76% reported that they always took …

Double Asymptotics For An Explosive Continuous Time Model, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu Nov 2011

Double Asymptotics For An Explosive Continuous Time Model, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops a double asymptotic limit theory for the persistent parameter (θ) in an explosive continuous time model with a large number of time span (N) and a small number of sampling interval (h). The limit theory allows for the joint limits where N → ∞ and h → 0 simultaneously, the sequential limits where N → ∞ is followed by h → 0, and the sequential limits where h → 0 is followed by N → ∞. All three asymptotic distributions are the same. The initial condition, either fixed or random, appears in the limiting distribution. The simultaneous …

Specification Testing For Nonparametric Structural Models With Monotonicity In Unobservables, Stefan Hoderlein, Liangjun Su, Halbert White Nov 2011

Specification Testing For Nonparametric Structural Models With Monotonicity In Unobservables, Stefan Hoderlein, Liangjun Su, Halbert White

Research Collection School Of Economics

Monotonicity in a scalar unobservable is a now common assumption in economic theory and applications. Among other things, it allows one to recover the underlying structural function from certain conditional quantiles of observables. Nevertheless, monotonicity is a strong assumption, and its failure can have substantive adverse consequences for structural inference. So far, there are no generally applicable nonparametric specification tests designed to detect monotonicity failure. This paper provides such a test for cross-section data. We show how to exploit an exclusion restriction together with a conditional independence assumption, plausible in a variety of applications, to construct a test. Our statistic …

Custodes Invicem Custodiunt: Commitment Through Competition, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko Nov 2011

Custodes Invicem Custodiunt: Commitment Through Competition, Madhav S. Aney, Giovanni Ko

Research Collection School Of Economics

How can specialists in violence, such as the military or the police, commit not to expropriate from producers? In this paper we propose competition between these agents as one of the mechanisms that can deter predation. In our model, even if specialists in violence could expropriate all output costlessly, it is attractive to protect producers from predators. This is because there is a marginal defensive advantage and consequently defense is an effective way to potentially eliminate other specialists in violence, reducing competition and leading to higher future payoffs. Hence, producers can offer transfers to specialists in violence that make defense …

Relating Trait Self-Control And Forgiveness Within Prosocials And Proselfs: Compensatory Versus Synergistic Models, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Jeff Joireman Nov 2011

Relating Trait Self-Control And Forgiveness Within Prosocials And Proselfs: Compensatory Versus Synergistic Models, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Jeff Joireman

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The present research tested 2 competing models specifying how 2 traits (concern with the well-being of others and self-control) interact to predict forgiveness. According to the compensatory model, forgiveness requires being high on either trait; according to the synergistic model, forgiveness requires being high on both traits. Two preliminary studies demonstrated the main effect of trait (Study 1a) and primed (Study 1b) self-control on forgiveness. Three primary studies consistently supported the compensatory model in predicting willingness to forgive a partner who behaves noncooperatively in a 2-alternative prisoner’s dilemma (Study 2), a continuous give-some dilemma (Study 3), and a 2-alternative maximizing …

Sex Differences In Cooperation: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Social Dilemmas, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Shane J. Macfarlan, Mark Van Vugt

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although it is commonly believed that women are kinder and more cooperative than men, there is conflicting evidence for this assertion. Current theories of sex differences in social behavior suggest that it may be useful to examine in what situations men and women are likely to differ in cooperation. Here, we derive predictions from both sociocultural and evolutionary perspectives on context-specific sex differences in cooperation, and we conduct a unique meta-analytic study of 272 effect sizes—sampled across 50 years of research—on social dilemmas to examine several potential moderators. The overall average effect size is not statistically different from zero (d …
