Dating The Timeline Of Financial Bubbles During The Subprime Crisis, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu Nov 2011

Dating The Timeline Of Financial Bubbles During The Subprime Crisis, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

A new recursive regression methodology is introduced to analyze the bubble characteristics of various financial time series during the subprime crisis. The methods modify a technique proposed in Phillips, Wu, and Yu (2011) and provide a technology for identifying bubble behavior with consistent dating of their origination and collapse. The tests serve as an early warning diagnostic of bubble activity and a new procedure is introduced for testing bubble migration across markets. Three relevant financial series are investigated, including a financial asset price (a house price index), a commodity price (the crude oil price), and one bond price (the spread …

Double Asymptotics For An Explosive Continuous Time Model, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu Nov 2011

Double Asymptotics For An Explosive Continuous Time Model, Xiaohu Wang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops a double asymptotic limit theory for the persistent parameter (θ) in an explosive continuous time model with a large number of time span (N) and a small number of sampling interval (h). The limit theory allows for the joint limits where N → ∞ and h → 0 simultaneously, the sequential limits where N → ∞ is followed by h → 0, and the sequential limits where h → 0 is followed by N → ∞. All three asymptotic distributions are the same. The initial condition, either fixed or random, appears in the limiting distribution. The simultaneous …

Specification Testing For Nonparametric Structural Models With Monotonicity In Unobservables, Stefan Hoderlein, Liangjun Su, Halbert White Nov 2011

Specification Testing For Nonparametric Structural Models With Monotonicity In Unobservables, Stefan Hoderlein, Liangjun Su, Halbert White

Research Collection School Of Economics

Monotonicity in a scalar unobservable is a now common assumption in economic theory and applications. Among other things, it allows one to recover the underlying structural function from certain conditional quantiles of observables. Nevertheless, monotonicity is a strong assumption, and its failure can have substantive adverse consequences for structural inference. So far, there are no generally applicable nonparametric specification tests designed to detect monotonicity failure. This paper provides such a test for cross-section data. We show how to exploit an exclusion restriction together with a conditional independence assumption, plausible in a variety of applications, to construct a test. Our statistic …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Complex anatomy and limited windows complicate echocardiographic assessments of ventricular function in Fontan patients. For the Pediatric Heart Network Fontan Cross-Sectional Study, data were acquired from which mean ventricular pressure change during isovolumetric contraction (dP/dt(ic)), Tei index, and maximal systolic annular velocity (S') could be measured. The purpose of this study was to compare these nongeometric indices of ventricular function to cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) measurements of ventricular ejection fraction (EF).

METHODS: Echocardiographic and CMR studies were performed prospectively using standardized protocols; measurements were completed by core laboratories. Data from both modalities were available from 137 patients.

RESULTS: A …

Multiple Paternity Of Caretta Caretta Within The Northwestern Atlantic Ocean Population On Wassaw Island, Ga, Jacob Lasala Nov 2011

Multiple Paternity Of Caretta Caretta Within The Northwestern Atlantic Ocean Population On Wassaw Island, Ga, Jacob Lasala

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Characterizing the mating system of a species is important for understanding demography and population dynamics and can contribute information to conservation efforts. Mating systems can impact the ecology, evolution, effective population size and genetic variability of a species. Polyandry, resulting in multiple paternity can influence the maintenance of genetic variation within a population. Within Testudines, the frequency of multiple paternity varies extensively among species (0-100% of nests). Previous studies on the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) have shown that within the large management unit of peninsular Florida, multiple paternity occurs in approximately 30% of nests. This study examines nests from the …

Support Varieties And Representation Type Of Self-Injective Algebras, Jorg Feldvoss, Sarah Witherspoon Nov 2011

Support Varieties And Representation Type Of Self-Injective Algebras, Jorg Feldvoss, Sarah Witherspoon

University Faculty and Staff Publications

We use the theory of varieties for modules arising from Hochschild cohomology to give an alternative version of the wildness criterion of Bergh and Solberg [7]: If a finite dimensional self-injective algebra has a module of complexity at least 3 and satisfies some finiteness assumptions on Hochschild cohomology, then the algebra is wild. We show directly how this is related to the analogous theory for Hopf algebras that we developed in [23]. We give applications to many different types of algebras: Hecke algebras, reduced universal enveloping algebras, small half- quantum groups, and Nichols (quantum symmetric) algebras.

Monitoring Leverage, John Geanakoplos, Lasse H. Pedersen Nov 2011

Monitoring Leverage, John Geanakoplos, Lasse H. Pedersen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We discuss how leverage can be monitored for institutions, individuals, and assets. While traditionally the interest rate has been regarded as the important feature of a loan, we argue that leverage is sometimes even more important. Monitoring leverage provides information about how risk builds up during booms as leverage rises and how crises start when leverage on new loans sharply declines. Leverage data is also a crucial input for crisis management and lending facilities. Leverage at the asset level can be monitored by down payments or margin requirement or and haircuts, giving a model-free measure that can be observed directly, …

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee Nov 2011

Thermodynamics Of Magnetic Multilayers, Tathagata Mukherjee

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Our interest in thermodynamics of magnetic thin film heterostructure began by exploring the possibility to use magnetic nanostructures in the search for optimized magnetocaloric materials for potential room temperature refrigeration. In the present thesis magnetic thin film heterostructures are experimentally realized by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Co/Cr and Fe/Cr superlattices were fabricated using mean-field theoretical concepts as guiding principles. The potential of artificial antiferromagnets for near room-temperature refrigeration is explored. Magnetocaloric properties are deduced from measurements of the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization of our samples. The effects of intra-plane and inter-plane exchange …

Integration Of Plant-Based Canopy Sensors For Site-Specific Nitrogen Management, Luciano S. Shiratsuchi Nov 2011

Integration Of Plant-Based Canopy Sensors For Site-Specific Nitrogen Management, Luciano S. Shiratsuchi

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The soil’s nitrogen (N) supply can vary drastically in the field, spatially as well as temporally making any soil prediction difficult even with very detailed mapping. Consequently, a plant-based approach wherein the measured canopy can indicate the N needs in a reactive and spatially-variable way can be a better approach than mapping, because integrate the soil N supply and translate the crop need on-the-go. The first experiment evaluated the performance of various spectral indices for sensing N status of corn, where spectral variability might be confounded by water-induced variations in crop reflectance. We found that water and previous crops effects …

Every Grain Of Sand: Would A Judicial Takings Doctrine Freeze The Common Law Of Property?, David S. Wheelock Nov 2011

Every Grain Of Sand: Would A Judicial Takings Doctrine Freeze The Common Law Of Property?, David S. Wheelock

Duke Law Journal

In Stop the Beach Renourishment, Inc. v. Florida Department of Environmental Protection, a plurality of the U.S. Supreme Court endorsed the proposition that the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment might operate as a constraint not only on executive and legislative action, but also on judicial decisions. In a federal system in which property rights are established almost exclusively by state law, and in which the meaning of state law is determined by state courts, the notion of judicial takings raises several difficult questions. The question that is the province of this Note is whether a doctrine of judicial takings …

Extending Integral Concepts To Curved Bridge Systems, Saeed Eghtedar Doust Nov 2011

Extending Integral Concepts To Curved Bridge Systems, Saeed Eghtedar Doust

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The behavior of integral abutment systems and the extension of their application to curved bridges are investigated. First, the stresses in the elements of a typical integral abutment are studied by conducting nonlinear finite element analysis using the software package Abaqus. The results are design recommendations for the details of such abutments. The effect of integral abutments on the responses of bridges is also investigated. Steel and concrete bridge systems are studied separately.

The studied steel bridge systems are composed of composite I-girder superstructures and integral abutments supported on steel H-piles. A series of finite element studies for different bridge …

High-Performance Affinity Chromatography And The Analysis Of Drug Interactions With Modified Proteins: Binding Of Gliclazide With Glycated Human Serum Albumin, Ryan Matsuda, Jeanethe Anguizola, K.S. Joseph, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

This study used high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) to examine the binding of gliclazide (i.e., a sulfonylurea drug used to treat diabetes) with the protein human serum albumin (HSA) at various stages of modification due to glycation. Frontal analysis conducted with small HPAC columns was first used to estimate the number of binding sites and association equilibrium constants (Ka) for gliclazide with normal HSA and glycated HSA. Both normal and glycated HSA interacted with gliclazide according to a two-site model, with a class of high affinity sites (average Ka, 7.1-10 × 104 M−1) …

An Analysis Of Open Security Issues Of Android Interfaces To Cloud Computing Platforms, Corey Beres Nov 2011

An Analysis Of Open Security Issues Of Android Interfaces To Cloud Computing Platforms, Corey Beres

Theses

Smartphone usage is on the rise and some may argue that these devices are ubiquitous in today's society, even among non-technical users. To remain competitive, mobile devices and applications need to quickly perform tasks with as minimal as possible impact on battery life. The emergence of cloud computing, open-source cloud platforms, and cloud-supported ventures such as Apple iCloud and Amazon Silk provide new and promising methods to improve device and application performance. However, little work has been done to examine the security of offloading processing from mobile devices to cloud services and the performance effects of implementing security features. This …

Factors That Contribute To Success Of Probationers: Probation Officers’ Point Of View, Brittany Archambeau Nov 2011

Factors That Contribute To Success Of Probationers: Probation Officers’ Point Of View, Brittany Archambeau

Theses

With such large numbers of individuals requiring supervision in the United States, it is essential to understand what contributes to the success of probationers. Probation officers work closest with probationers and develop a unique understanding of what contributes to a probationer's success. The framework for this research is rooted in the idea that the officers experience conflicting goals of rehabilitation and law enforcement. Extensive interviews were conducted with probation officers in Federal and local probation to assess their views on the goals of probation, needs of probationers, and best practices. Hypotheses tested involve the importance of evidence-based practices, cognitive-behavioral therapies, …

Advancing The Practice Of Cognitive Task Analysis: A Call For Taxonomic Research, Kenneth A. Yates, David F. Feldon Nov 2011

Advancing The Practice Of Cognitive Task Analysis: A Call For Taxonomic Research, Kenneth A. Yates, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Cognitive task analysis (CTA) captures unobservable cognitive processes, decisions and judgments of expert performance. Over 100 different CTA methods are identified in prior literature. However, existing classifications typically sort techniques by process rather than outcome, application or causal mechanism. Therefore, techniques can be misapplied and comparative analysis of methods made difficult. Based on the frequency distribution of CTA methods in 1065 studies, a subsample representing 60% of the most frequently published methods was coded based on elicitation and analysis techniques. Consistency of resulting applications was assessed. Inconsistent matching of CTA methods and subsequent applications indicate CTA is currently more craft …

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease. Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis., Jaudah A. Al-Maghrabi

Saudi Medical Journal

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a self-limited disease of complex and unclear etiology. Clinically and microscopically, it may mimic malignant lymphoma and other non-malignant diseases. Recognition of this entity is crucial, as mistaking this disease as lymphoma has major clinical consequences. Although KFD is a well-recognized entity in the literature, many clinicians and pathologists are still unaware of its existence. In this article, a review of KFD is provided with special emphasis on the pathogenesis and pathological differential diagnosis of this disease.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The emerging Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) technology will enable many exciting applications such as vehicular safety assistance and mobile entertainment. One of the key challenges toward successful roll-out of VANET applications is to provide security and privacy preserving mechanisms for users. Existing efforts on this topic rely heavily on infrastructure like road-side units which however are not available everywhere. to minimize the dependence on infrastructure, we propose a novel Peer-Based Automobile Identity Management (PAIM) Framework which is mainly based on vehicle-to-vehicle communication. PAIM supports dynamic event-Based moving zones formed by vehicles sharing common interest. PAIM achieves the level of privacy …

We examined elbow muscle activities and movement kinematics to determine how subjects combine elementary control actions in performing movements with one and two trajectory segments. In reaching, subjects made a rapid elbow flexion to a visual target before stabilizing the limb with either a low or a higher level of elbow flexor/extensor coactivity (CoA), which was cued by target diameter. Cursor diameter provided real-time biofeedback of actual muscle CoA. In reversing, the limb was to reverse direction within the target and return to the origin with minimal CoA. We previously reported that subjects overshoot the goal when attempting a reversal …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Epigenetic variation describes heritable differences that are not attributable to changes in DNA sequence. There is the potential for pure epigenetic variation that occurs in the absence of any genetic change or for more complex situations that involve both genetic and epigenetic differences. Methylation of cytosine residues provides one mechanism for the inheritance of epigenetic information. A genome-wide profiling of DNA methylation in two different genotypes of Zea mays (ssp. mays), an organism with a complex genome of interspersed genes and repetitive elements, allowed the identification and characterization of examples of natural epigenetic variation. The distribution of DNA methylation …

Crime-Severity Distinctions And The Fourth Amendment: Reassessing Reasonableness In A Changing World, Jeffrey Bellin Nov 2011

Crime-Severity Distinctions And The Fourth Amendment: Reassessing Reasonableness In A Changing World, Jeffrey Bellin

Faculty Publications

A growing body of commentary calls for the Supreme Court to recalibrate its Fourth Amendment jurisprudence in response to technological and social changes that threaten the traditional balance between public safety and personal liberty. This Article joins the discussion, highlighting a largely overlooked consideration that should be included in any modernization of Fourth Amendment doctrine—crime severity.

The Supreme Court emphasizes that “reasonableness” is the “touchstone” of Fourth Amendment analysis. Yet, in evaluating contested searches and seizures, current Fourth Amendment doctrine ignores a key determinant of reasonableness, the crime under investigation. As a result, an invasive search of a suspected murderer …

Foetus-In-Foetu, Syed Rehan Ali, Maqbool Qadir, Shakeel Ahmed, Prem Kumar

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Foetus-in-foetu is a rare malformation in which a monozygotic diamniotic parasitic twin is incorporated into the body of its fellow twin and grows inside it. Less than 100 cases have been reported in literature. One day old newborn male was admitted with antenatal diagnosis of abdominal mass. It was cystic/solid in nature with pressure effects on left ureter and urinary bladder, most likely to be a germ cell tumour. Birth history was uneventful. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and the mass was excised. Physical examination confirmed the diagnosis of foetus-in-foetu. Although it is a rare condition, imaging may play an important …
