Appraising Qualitative Research Reports: A Developmental Approach, Robin Cooper

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, the author discusses the development of an appraisal instrument designed for evaluating submissions to The Qualitative Report-the TQR Rubric. Following a description of the context of TQR, she explains what led to the development of the TQR Rubric and describes its components. She concludes by presenting the plan of implementation of the rubric and a discussion of how the TQR Rubric's elements relate to notions of quality presented in the literature.

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson Nov 2011

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We believe that we can use active probing for compromise recovery. Our intent is to exploit the differences in behavior between compromised and uncompromised systems and use that information to identify those which are not behaving as expected. Those differences may indicate a deviation in either con figuration or implementation from what we expect on the network, either of which suggests that the misbehaving entity might not be trustworthy. In this work, we propose and build a case for a method for using altered behavior directly resulting from or introduced as a side-effect of the compromise of a network service …

Teacher Education To Meet The Challenges Posed By Child Sexual Abuse, Ben Mathews Nov 2011

Teacher Education To Meet The Challenges Posed By Child Sexual Abuse, Ben Mathews

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The phenomenon of child sexual abuse has significant implications for teachers’ pre-service training and professional development. Teachers have a pedagogical role in dealing with abused children, and a legal and professional duty to report suspected child sexual abuse. Teachers require support and training to develop the specialised knowledge and confidence needed to deal with this complex context. This article explains the social context of child sexual abuse, its health and educational consequences, and the legal context, showing why teachers require this specialised training. It then reports on findings from an Australian study into the amount of training received by teachers …

Teachers' Attitudes Towards Overt And Covert Bullying, And Perceived Efficacy To Intervene, Dianne L. Byers, Nerina J. Caltabiano, Marie L. Caltabiano Nov 2011

Teachers' Attitudes Towards Overt And Covert Bullying, And Perceived Efficacy To Intervene, Dianne L. Byers, Nerina J. Caltabiano, Marie L. Caltabiano

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Abstract: Covert bullying has become a serious problem in Australian schools. Past research has focused on overt bullying, especially physical forms. This study explores teacher characteristics that influence their attitudes and responses to covert bullying. Responses to three scales measuring teacher attitudes towards bullying, perceived self-efficacy and preferred style of handling bullying incidents, as well as background questions were sought from 62 teachers from a Catholic Diocese in Queensland. Overt bullying incidents were taken more seriously than covert bullying; victims were shown empathy and intervention was likely. All teachers showed high levels of self-efficacy and were likely to intervene in …

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos Nov 2011

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that the inscription of bodies is necessary in order to constitute the cosmos, gender and sex. A study of the Vedic cosmogonic mythologies of the deities Purusha and Prajapati illustrates the ways in which sacrifice, as a form of inscription, constitutes the cosmos by ordering and fashioning the boundaries of the bodies of the deities through differentiation and unification. An analysis of samskaras, or consecratory rites of The Law Code of Manu, show that they operate as regulatory norms in order to constitute sex and gender. But the instability and unnaturalness of the categories of gender and …

R&D Investment Link To Profitability: A Pharmaceutical Industry Evaluation, Lawrence J. Nord Nov 2011

R&D Investment Link To Profitability: A Pharmaceutical Industry Evaluation, Lawrence J. Nord

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper is an in depth analysis of the influence that investment into research and development has on a firm’s profitability in the pharmaceutical industry in the United States. The pharmaceutical industry is chosen due to its high intensity of research and development expenditures. The top 16 companies in the pharmaceutical industry are analyzed through regression analysis. The argument made is that as more funds are invested into research and development a firm in the pharmaceutical industry will experience a higher market value. Theoretically as firms spend more on research and development they are increasing the likelihood of innovation, which …

Challenge With Care: Reflections On Teaching Excellence, Stacee M. Lerret, Marilyn Frenn Nov 2011

Challenge With Care: Reflections On Teaching Excellence, Stacee M. Lerret, Marilyn Frenn

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

A number of faculty have had no formal preparation to teach. Because little nursing research has focused on teaching excellence in recent years, when both nursing practice and approaches to teaching and learning have changed remarkably, this analysis integrates present perspectives and the research foundation for teaching nursing. A constant comparative method incorporating 27 doctoral student reflections and analysis of literature from 1960 to present resulted in four major categories: know and honor students, enthused, knowledgeable, and student centered. Linking the major categories, an Excellent Teacher Circle of Distinction emerged, described as “with enthusiasm and compassion the teacher engages the …

Assessing The Impact Of Non-Differential Genotyping Errors On Rare Variant Tests Of Association, Scott Powers, Shyam Gopalakrishnan, Nathan L. Tintle Nov 2011

Assessing The Impact Of Non-Differential Genotyping Errors On Rare Variant Tests Of Association, Scott Powers, Shyam Gopalakrishnan, Nathan L. Tintle

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Background/Aims: We aim to quantify the effect of non-differential genotyping errors on the power of rare variant tests and identify those situations when genotyping errors are most harmful. Methods: We simulated genotype and phenotype data for a range of sample sizes, minor allele frequencies, disease relative risks and numbers of rare variants. Genotype errors were then simulated using five different error models covering a wide range of error rates. Results: Even at very low error rates, misclassifying a common homozygote as a heterozygote translates into a substantial loss of power, a result that is exacerbated even further as the minor …

Background - Lower socioeconomic status at both the individual and neighborhood level is associated with increased health risks. Weight loss can reduce this risk, but few high quality weight loss studies target this population.

Objectives - STARS tests a culturally-appropriate, group-based behavioral and social support intervention on body weight and waist circumference in women from financially disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Design - A stratified (by BMI) randomized trial. Randomization to group was generated by a random numbers table with allocation concealment by opaque envelopes.

Methods - Participants 25-50 years who had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and a waist circumference ≥ …

Interactive Gaming Reduces Experimental Pain With Or Without A Head Mounted Display, Nakia S. Gordon, Juniad Merchant, Catherine Zanbaka, Larry F. Hodges, Paula Goolkasian Nov 2011

Interactive Gaming Reduces Experimental Pain With Or Without A Head Mounted Display, Nakia S. Gordon, Juniad Merchant, Catherine Zanbaka, Larry F. Hodges, Paula Goolkasian

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

While virtual reality environments have been shown to reduce pain, the precise mechanism that produces the pain attenuating effect has not been established. It has been suggested that it may be the ability to command attentional resources with the use of head mounted displays (HMDs) or the interactivity of the environment. Two experiments compared participants’ pain ratings to high and low levels of electrical stimulation while engaging in interactive gaming with an HMD. In the first, gaming with the HMD was compared to a positive emotion induction condition; and in the second experiment the HMD was compared to a condition …

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher Nov 2011

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The phenomenon of altruism extends from the biological realm to the human sociocultural realm. This paper sketches a coherent outline of multiple types of altruism of progressively increasing scope that span these two realms and are grounded in an ever-expanding sense of "self." Discussion of this framework notes difficulties associated with altruisms at different levels. It links scientific ideas about the evolution of cooperation and about hierarchical order to perennial philosophical and religious concerns. It offers a conceptual background for inquiry into societal challenges that call for altruistic behavior, especially the challenge of environmental and social sustainability.

Assessing Event Quality Of High School Football Games: Development Of A Scale, Kevin Byon, Matthew Ziemnik, Eddie T. C. Lam, James J. Zhang Nov 2011

Assessing Event Quality Of High School Football Games: Development Of A Scale, Kevin Byon, Matthew Ziemnik, Eddie T. C. Lam, James J. Zhang

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (a) to identify the dimensions of event quality associated with high school football games and (b) to develop a scale, Event Quality Scale of High School Football (EQS-HSF) that measures event quality of high school football games. Applying a random cluster sampling method, participants were adult spectators (N = 404) from three high school football home games. Following the scale development procedures suggested by Churchill’s (1979), a total of 25 items under six factors (Game Attractiveness, Event Setting, Economic Consideration, Social Opportunity, Exciting Atmosphere, and Enjoyment Experience) were written and validated through qualitative …

Relating Trait Self-Control And Forgiveness Within Prosocials And Proselfs: Compensatory Versus Synergistic Models, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Jeff Joireman Nov 2011

Relating Trait Self-Control And Forgiveness Within Prosocials And Proselfs: Compensatory Versus Synergistic Models, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Jeff Joireman

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The present research tested 2 competing models specifying how 2 traits (concern with the well-being of others and self-control) interact to predict forgiveness. According to the compensatory model, forgiveness requires being high on either trait; according to the synergistic model, forgiveness requires being high on both traits. Two preliminary studies demonstrated the main effect of trait (Study 1a) and primed (Study 1b) self-control on forgiveness. Three primary studies consistently supported the compensatory model in predicting willingness to forgive a partner who behaves noncooperatively in a 2-alternative prisoner’s dilemma (Study 2), a continuous give-some dilemma (Study 3), and a 2-alternative maximizing …

Puffery, Whitney Warne Nov 2011

Puffery, Whitney Warne

Theses

The external body is a place to perform a version of ourselves, rather than be ourselves. To perform is to strike a balance between the self and the rules, between individual action and gesture and the script--between what you know and what other people tell you to know. Puffery explores the culturally constructed performance and expected behaviors of the modern female. I have created video and photography documented durational performances that question a female's relationship with exterior presentation. Viewers watch as she exposes her façade--examining it and breaking it down in an effort to negotiate self, power, and control.

An Experimental Approach To Testing Imc Effects On Consumer Attitudes, Behavioral Intentions And Recall, John M. Mcgrath Nov 2011

An Experimental Approach To Testing Imc Effects On Consumer Attitudes, Behavioral Intentions And Recall, John M. Mcgrath

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The objective of this study is twofold: to build upon the thin body of academic experimental research in the field of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC), and to provide practitioners with methods they can use to test the effectiveness of marketing communication campaigns. On the first account, significant results were observed for attitude toward the ad (Aad), but only for a subset of the sample. Despite this, the experiment provides a framework for future academic studies of IMC effects and suggests specific ways that methods can be refined in future experiments. On the second account, the study’s design suggests opportunities for …

In order to meet increasing demand for seafood worldwide Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are frequently used. These systems are susceptible to contamination by waste matter including faecal material in the water. It is imperative that this material is removed from the system. The maintenance of good water quality is a pre-requisite to the success of the operation. Negligence in this area will adversely affect animal growth rates and also the economic performance of the system.

Micro-screen drum filters are a popular solution for the removal of this material (Cripps, Simon J. and Bergheim, Asbjørn., 2000). These screens are nominally rated …

Phenomenological Study Of Postgraduate Researchers' Experiences Of Nanoscience And Nanotechnology Research, Deepa Chari, Paul Irving, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe

Articles

Over the past few decades, scientific disciplines have changed significantly with the introduction of new and complex aspects of interdisciplinary research, particularly in the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N). The current attempts to develop science education programmes in N&N area to adopt these complex changes however are mainly focussed towards the core scientific knowledge, and, not much attention has been paid to identify the attributes knowledge, skills and competences necessary to successfully undertake N&N research. Identification of these attributes is important so that the core scientific knowledge can be embedded in the curricula more effectively. Also, to work successfully …

C(Naphthyl)-H Bond Activation By Rhodium: Isolation, Characterization And Td-Dft Study Of The Cyclometallates, Achintesh Narayan Biswas, Purak K. Das, Sandip K. Sengupta, Amitava Choudhury, Pinaki K. Bandyopadhyay

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The C1(naphthyl)-H, C2(naphthyl)-H, C3(naphthyl)-H and C8(naphthyl)-H bonds of the naphthyl group present in a group of naphthylazo-2'-hydroxyarenes (H 2L) have been activated by [Rh(PPh 3) 3Cl] in a toluene medium. Here the cyclometallation is accompanied by metal centered oxidation [Rh(i)?Rh(iii)]. All the resulting cyclometallates [Rh(PPh 3) 2(L)Cl] (2-5) have been isolated in a pure form. The characterization of the cyclometallates [Rh(PPh 3) 2(L)Cl] have been done on the basis of spectral (IR, UV-vis, and FAB mass) data. The structures of the representative cyclometallates 2a, 3a, 4a, 4b and 5b have been determined by …

Infinite-Randomness Criticality In A Randomly Layered Heisenberg Magnet, Fawaz Hrahsheh, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta Nov 2011

Infinite-Randomness Criticality In A Randomly Layered Heisenberg Magnet, Fawaz Hrahsheh, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the ferromagnetic phase transition in a randomly layered Heisenberg magnet using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Our results provide numerical evidence for the infinite-randomness scenario recently predicted within a strong-disorder renormalization-group approach. Specifically, we investigate the finite-size scaling behavior of the magnetic susceptibility, which is characterized by a nonuniversal power-law divergence in the Griffiths phase. We also study the perpendicular and parallel spin-wave stiffnesses in the Griffiths phase. In agreement with the theoretical predictions, the parallel stiffness is nonzero for all temperatures T < Tc. In contrast, the perpendicular stiffness remains zero in part of the ordered phase, giving …

Influence Of Gas Pressure On High-Order-Harmonic Generation Of Ar And Ne, Guoli Wang, Cheng Jin, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin Nov 2011

Influence Of Gas Pressure On High-Order-Harmonic Generation Of Ar And Ne, Guoli Wang, Cheng Jin, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the effect of gas pressure on the generation of high-order harmonics where harmonics due to individual atoms are calculated using the recently developed quantitative rescattering theory, and the propagation of the laser and harmonics in the medium is calculated by solving the Maxwell's wave equation. We illustrate that the simulated spectra are very sensitive to the laser focusing conditions at high laser intensity and high pressure since the fundamental laser field is severely reshaped during the propagation. By comparing the simulated results with several experiments we show that the pressure dependence can be qualitatively explained. The lack of …

Linear Programming-Based Estimators In Simple Linear Regression, Daniel P. A. Preve, Marcelo C. Medeiros Nov 2011

Linear Programming-Based Estimators In Simple Linear Regression, Daniel P. A. Preve, Marcelo C. Medeiros

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we introduce a linear programming estimator (LPE) for the slope parameter in a constrained linear regression model with a single regressor. The LPE is interesting because it can be superconsistent in the presence of an endogenous regressor and, hence, preferable to the ordinary least squares estimator (LSE). Two different cases are considered as we investigate the statistical properties of the LPE. In the first case, the regressor is assumed to be fixed in repeated samples. In the second, the regressor is stochastic and potentially endogenous. For both cases the strong consistency and exact finite-sample distribution of the …
