Tracking The Use Of Leed® In Facilities For Higher Education, Shannon Chance Jan 2011

Tracking The Use Of Leed® In Facilities For Higher Education, Shannon Chance

Articles

America’s 4391 institutions of higher learning own roughly 240,000 buildings according to The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (2009) and the United States Green Building Council [USGBC] (n.d.). Most of these buildings’ designs reflect a time when energy was cheap and material abundant. Throughout the past century, building designs frequently ignored their surroundings, usurped energy at appalling rates, and did little to teach inhabitants respect for the environment

Cooperative Learning And Peer Tutoring To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Test Scores On Grade-Level Assessment, Francina Y. Thurston Jan 2011

Cooperative Learning And Peer Tutoring To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Test Scores On Grade-Level Assessment, Francina Y. Thurston

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to utilize learning strategies that emphasized small-group instructions where students work together cooperatively and with peers to achieve mastery. Traditionally, the classroom practices used in this school lent themselves primarily to whole-class instructions that emphasized competitive and individualistic goals rather than small groups and cooperative practices. The multistrategy used in this study sought to shift the focus of classroom instructions away from what was traditional. However, the introduction of the multistrategy that called for small group teaching required training for teachers and students.

The writer developed several solution strategies that trained students and teachers in …

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate if implementation of the Response to Intervention (RTI) model had an effect on student academic gains at the target school. The problem that prompted this study was that information on the effectiveness of the RTI model had not yet been determined. The reauthorization of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act allowed the use of the RTI model as a viable alternative for identifying students who may be experiencing academic difficulties rather than the traditional wait-and-fail model. Data and state assessment scores for sixth-grade students indicated that remediation was necessary. The RTI model allows …

Processing And Characterization Of Boron Carbide-Hafnium Diboride Ceramics, Harlan J. Brown-Shaklee Jan 2011

Processing And Characterization Of Boron Carbide-Hafnium Diboride Ceramics, Harlan J. Brown-Shaklee

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hafnium diboride based ceramics are promising candidate materials for advanced aerospace and nuclear reactor components. The effectiveness of boron carbide and carbon as HfB₂ sintering additives was systematically evaluated. In the first stage of the research, boron carbide and carbon additives were found to improve the densification behavior of milled HfB₂ powder in part by removing oxides at the HfB₂ surface during processing. Boron carbide additives reduced the hot pressing temperature of HfB₂ by 150⁰C compared to carbon, which reduced the hot pressing temperature by ~50⁰C. Reduction of oxide impurities alone could not explain the difference in sintering enhancement, however, …

Quantum Electrodynamics And Fundamental Constants, Benedikt J. Wundt Jan 2011

Quantum Electrodynamics And Fundamental Constants, Benedikt J. Wundt

Doctoral Dissertations

"The unprecedented precision achieved both in the experimental measurements as well as in the theoretical description of atomic bound states make them an ideal study object for fundamental physics and the determination of fundamental constants. This requires a careful study of the effects from quantum electrodynamics (QED) on the interaction between the electron and the nucleus.

The two theoretical approaches for the evaluation of QED corrections are presented and discussed. Due to the presence of two energy scales from the binding potential and the radiation field, an overlapping parameter has to be used in both the approaches in order to …

Sandwich Structures With Advanced Facings, Cody H. Nguyen Jan 2011

Sandwich Structures With Advanced Facings, Cody H. Nguyen

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this research is to investigate potential advantages of two innovative designs of sandwich panels. The first design involves sandwich panels with a piece-wise thickness of the facings aiming at two possible outcomes: (I) improved the structural response, i.e. strength and stiffness, without increasing the weight of the structure or (2) reduction in the weight of the structure without a detriment to its structural response. The analysis is conducted analytically using the first-order shear deformation theory and numerically by the finite element analysis of conventional and stepped-wise sandwich panels. The applicability of the first-order shear deformation theory to …

Spiking Neural Networks And Their Applications, Cameron Eric Johnson Jan 2011

Spiking Neural Networks And Their Applications, Cameron Eric Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been developed as adaptable, robust function approximators for at least the last quarter-century. They have progressed through two generations, and the third is now under development. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) seek to improve on previous generations in two ways: by using a more biologically-inspired neuron, they are shown to be capable of more complex calculations; incorporating polychronous properties of highly-recurrent networks with delays of different lengths on each synapse to achieve large numbers of possible patterns with relatively few neurons and synapses.

Abstracted spiking neurons have been used as a third-generation activation function in a …

Racial Redistricting In A Post-Racial World, Gilda R. Daniels Jan 2011

Racial Redistricting In A Post-Racial World, Gilda R. Daniels

Cardozo Law Review

The 2011 redistricting will provide some interesting challenges for minority voting rights. How can we preserve minority electoral opportunities and gains in the wake of Bartlett v. Strickland and Georgia v. Ashcroft? What is the impact on future voting rights litigation and are coalition district claims viable as an opportunity to continue the electoral gains made since the passage of the Voting Rights Act? Are majority-minority districts safe from legislative backsliding? The Supreme Court's construed admonitions against race-conscious redistricting in recent cases may become cautionary tales. This Article discusses the central role the Voting Rights Act should play in …

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province, Lamuail Bashir Jan 2011

Crustal Structure And Evolution Beneath The Colorado Plateau And The Southern Basin And Range Province, Lamuail Bashir

Doctoral Dissertations

"Stacking of about 15,500 P-to-S receiver functions recorded at 72 USArray and other broadband seismic stations placed on the Colorado Plateau and the SBRP in Arizona revealed systematic spatial variations in crustal Vp/Vs, crustal thickness and amplitude of P-to-S converted phases. Our results reveal that the BRP is characterized by a thin crust (28.2 ± 0.5 km), a mean Vp/Vs of 1.761 ± 0.014 and a mean amplitude (R) of P - to - S converted wave (relative to that of the direct P wave) of 0.181 ± 0.014 that are similar to a typical continental crust, consistent with the …

First-Principles Studies Of Complex Hydrides For Li-Ion Battery And Hydrogen Storage Applications, Timothy Hudson Mason Jan 2011

First-Principles Studies Of Complex Hydrides For Li-Ion Battery And Hydrogen Storage Applications, Timothy Hudson Mason

Doctoral Dissertations

"We employ density functional theory in a computational study of two energy storage systems.

In the first, we explore the thermodynamic viability of light metal hydrides as a high capacity Li-ion battery negative electrode. Given a set of solid-state and gas-phase reactants, we have determined the phase diagram in the Li-Mg-B-N-H system in the grand canonical ensemble as a function of lithium electrochemical potential. We present computational results for several new conversion reactions with predicted capacities between 2400 and 4000 mAhg⁻¹ that are thermodynamically favorable and that do not involve gas evolution. We provide experimental evidence for the reaction pathway …

Two New Spline-Based Methods And Real Data Applications: High-Resolution Receiver Function Calculations From Teleseismic Broadband Waveforms And High-Accuracy Practical Potential-Field Integral Transformations, Bingzhu Wang Jan 2011

Two New Spline-Based Methods And Real Data Applications: High-Resolution Receiver Function Calculations From Teleseismic Broadband Waveforms And High-Accuracy Practical Potential-Field Integral Transformations, Bingzhu Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"While receiver function (RF) calculation is fundamentally important and widely used, it is not well solved due to unstable deconvolution. A spline-based RF calculation method was proposed and it is demonstrated that both individual RFs and the stacked RF calculated with the spline method have sharper peaks than those with the water-level spectral division method and the iterative deconvolution method. At the common peaks on the stacked RFs, there are close similarities for all three RF calculation methods. The better calculated RFs with the spline method lead to improved H - K analysis and improved determination of the optimal Moho …

Additivity Of Strengthening Mechanisms In Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, Nilesh Kumar Jan 2011

Additivity Of Strengthening Mechanisms In Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, Nilesh Kumar

Doctoral Dissertations

"Friction stir processing (FSP) has been used in the present work to obtain ultrafine grained (UFG) microstructure in a twin-roll cast (TRC) Al-Mg-Sc alloy. An attempt has been made to establish a correlation between processing, microstructure, and properties (mechanical) in UFG regime for this alloy system.

The effect of initial microstructural conditions and processing parameters (tool rotation rate) were shown to have a profound impact on the development of UFG microstructure. FSP led to a microstructure consisting of grains with an average grain size as small as 390 nm, having high angle grain boundaries and a completely random texture. The …

Naturalistic Emotional Speech Corpora With Large Scale Emotional Dimension Ratings, Brian Vaughan Jan 2011

Naturalistic Emotional Speech Corpora With Large Scale Emotional Dimension Ratings, Brian Vaughan

Doctoral

The investigation of the emotional dimensions of speech is dependent on large sets of reliable data. Existing work has been carried out on the creation of emotional speech corpora and the acoustic analysis of emotional speech and this research seeks to build
upon this work while suggesting new methods and areas of potential. A review of the literature determined that a two dimensional emotional model of activation and evaluation was the ideal method for representing the emotional states expressed in
speech. Two case studies were carried out to investigate methods of obtaining natural
underlying emotional speech in a high quality …

Characterisation Of Metallo-Cyclodextrins For Chiral Separations, Gary Hessman Jan 2011

Characterisation Of Metallo-Cyclodextrins For Chiral Separations, Gary Hessman

Doctoral

Almost half of commercial pharmaceuticals are chiral and therefore effective analytical techniques to detect and quantify enantiomers are important in the pharmaceutical sector to ensure drug safety and efficacy. In this work copper(II) complexes of aminoalkane derivatives of β-cyclodextrin (CDEn, CDPn and CDBn) were investigated to determine if they provide a versatile solution for the direct separation of the enantiomers of DOPA, benserazide and carbidopa using capillary electrophoresis. Tyrosine was used as a model compound. Electronic spectroscopy was used in order to determine if copper(II) coordinates to the amino-CDs and to determine if further coordination to the guest species occurs. …

Novel Transparent Conductive Materials: Understanding And Prediction, Yaou Song Jan 2011

Novel Transparent Conductive Materials: Understanding And Prediction, Yaou Song

Masters Theses

"Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) such as doped In₂O₃, ZnO, SnO₂ or CdO are highly attractive due to their special properties, which are electrical conductivity and optical transparency. The lack of complete understanding of the fundamentals behind this unique phenomena and rapidly increasing commercial demand draw a lot of interest in investigating this kind of materials. More efficient, environmentally friendly and less expensive transparent conductive materials are needed for a variety of applications, and a general understanding of the origins of the unusual behavior would help further search for potential transparent conductive (TC) candidates. Understanding the basic properties of conventional TCOs …

Microstructural Evolution Of Fine-Grained Layers Through The Firn Column At Summit, Greenland, R. Lomonaco, M. Albert, I. Baker Jan 2011

Microstructural Evolution Of Fine-Grained Layers Through The Firn Column At Summit, Greenland, R. Lomonaco, M. Albert, I. Baker

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a microstructural characterization of fine-grained layers from the top 90 m of firn from Summit, Greenland, performed using a combination of scanning electron microscopy techniques including secondary electron imaging, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and electron backscattered patterns, and X-ray microcomputed tomography. The impurities in the firn, both soluble impurities and dust particles, were found largely in the grain interiors. Both c- and a-axis pole figures do not show strong evidence of a preferred orientation of the grains even at the bottom of the firn column. The firn structure became increasingly anisotropic with vertical alignment in the top 3 m, probably …

The Impact Of A Short-Term Review Treatment Program On Student Success In A College Algebra Course, Frances Clementi Hopf Jan 2011

The Impact Of A Short-Term Review Treatment Program On Student Success In A College Algebra Course, Frances Clementi Hopf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether conducting a short-term online review of college algebra prerequisite skills at the start of a college algebra course concurrently with the normal course instruction and assignments would have a significant influence on student success. When failure rates in an entry-level college course such as college algebra can range from 20% to 60% or higher, it could present problems for the student and the institution (Burd & Boser, 2009). Research indicates that students who cannot pass entry-level college math courses have decreased chances of obtaining a college degree and it can …

It significantly interferes with a person's quality of life making it an issue of great concern to nurses in any setting. However, nurses do not do a good job of managing pain. The purpose of this evaluation was to assess graduate nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management.

Forty (n=40) graduate nursing students were asked to participate in the evaluation. All students agreed and completed the Demographic Data Form, Nurses Attitude Survey and the Pain Management and Principles Assessment. Thirty-eight females and two males participated in …

Perseverative Cognition, Cognitive Load, And Distraction In Recovery From Stress, Alvin B. Jin Jan 2011

Perseverative Cognition, Cognitive Load, And Distraction In Recovery From Stress, Alvin B. Jin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perseverative cognition is the repetitive cognitive representation of a stressor, which includes the concepts of worry and rumination. These thoughts delay post-stress cardiovascular recovery, which may lead to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. This may be due to the negative emotional content of perseverative cognition or because it involves cognitive effort. The aim of this study was to identify the unique influences of negative emotional content and cognitive effort during recovery. Participants (N = 120) were given a demanding task purportedly as a measure of intelligence and then given false negative feedback. Immediately following, participants engaged in one of …

Combining Natural Language Processing And Statistical Text Mining: A Study Of Specialized Versus Common Languages, Jay Jarman Jan 2011

Combining Natural Language Processing And Statistical Text Mining: A Study Of Specialized Versus Common Languages, Jay Jarman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on developing and evaluating hybrid approaches for analyzing free-form text in the medical domain. This research draws on natural language processing (NLP) techniques that are used to parse and extract concepts based on a controlled vocabulary. Once important concepts are extracted, additional machine learning algorithms, such as association rule mining and decision tree induction, are used to discover classification rules for specific targets. This multi-stage pipeline approach is contrasted with traditional statistical text mining (STM) methods based on term counts and term-by-document frequencies. The aim is to create effective text analytic processes by adapting and combining individual …

Seagrass Patch Dynamics In Areas Of Historical Loss In Tampa Bay, Fl, Usa, Kristen A. Kaufman Jan 2011

Seagrass Patch Dynamics In Areas Of Historical Loss In Tampa Bay, Fl, Usa, Kristen A. Kaufman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study documents seagrass patch dynamics over large spatial extents in Tampa Bay, Florida. Using GIS techniques a set of fine scale seagrass maps was created within locations previously identified as "patchy" seagrass or areas of seagrass loss. Thirty randomly selected landscape windows of various extents were mapped for the years 2004, 2006, and 2008 by visualizing 0.3 m resolution color imagery on-screen at a digitizing scale of 1:500 using a minimum mapping unit of 1 m2. Characteristics of seagrass patches and patterns of seagrass change were quantified using area-based and time interval metrics including total seagrass area, …

Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha Jan 2011

Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Reproducing Kernel Element Method is a numerical technique that combines finite element and meshless methods to construct shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity, yet retains the Kronecker-δ property. Central to constructing these shape functions is the construction of global partition polynomials on an element. This dissertation shows that asymmetric interpolations may arise due to such things as changes in the local to global node numbering and that may adversely affect the interpolation capability of the method. This issue arises due to the use in previous formulations of incomplete polynomials that are subsequently non-affine invariant. This dissertation lays out …

A Remotely Operated Multi-Tracked Vehicle For Subterranean Exploration Of Gopher Tortoise Burrows, William Keese Jan 2011

A Remotely Operated Multi-Tracked Vehicle For Subterranean Exploration Of Gopher Tortoise Burrows, William Keese

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The gopher tortoise is a land tortoise living in the southeastern United States. It is a species in decline and is listed as threatened or endangered in six different states. The gopher (as commonly referred) digs burrows that it uses for many reasons and spends most of its time underground. Problems occur when trying to estimate a population because a gopher tortoise digs more than one burrow. This thesis demonstrates an innovative way to survey and investigate a gopher tortoise burrow hole by using a multi-tracked remotely operated vehicle. The vehicle carried two cameras (fore and aft) and was equipped …

Oxygen Diffusion Characterization Of Frp Composites Used In Concrete Repair And Rehabilitation, Chandra K. Khoe Jan 2011

Oxygen Diffusion Characterization Of Frp Composites Used In Concrete Repair And Rehabilitation, Chandra K. Khoe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many independent studies have conclusively demonstrated that fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) slow down chloride-induced corrosion of steel in concrete. The mechanism for this slow down is not well understood but it has been hypothesized that FRP serves as a barrier to the ingress of chloride, moisture, and oxygen that sustain electrochemical corrosion of steel.

This dissertation presents results from an experimental study that determined the oxygen permeation rates of materials used in infrastructure repair. In the study, the oxygen permeation constants for epoxy, carbon and glass fiber laminates, concrete, epoxy-concrete and FRP-concrete systems were determined and a method developed to …

High-Resolution Event Stratigraphy Of Mm-Scale Laminated Sediments From Coastal Salt Ponds: St. John, Us Virgin Islands, Rebekka Amie Larson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A multi-proxy approach is utilized on mm- to cm-scale laminated sediment records in coastal salt ponds on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to characterize the sediments, identify their sources and depositional processes/events (heavy rainfall, tropical cyclones, tsunamis). Historical records are combined with high-resolution geochronology (short-lived radioisotopes, 210Pb, 137Cs, 7Be) and scanning elemental techniques (XRF and LA-ICP-MS) to link depositional events to how they are manifested in the sedimentary record. Volcanic rocks are the terrigenous sediment source and the sedimentary signature of terrigenous sediment in the geologic record consists of higher amounts of Al, Fe, Ti, Co, and …

Responding To Tobacco Craving: Acceptance Versus Suppression, Erika B. Litvin Jan 2011

Responding To Tobacco Craving: Acceptance Versus Suppression, Erika B. Litvin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) are based on a model that craving is a primary cause of relapse, and therefore they emphasize skills for preventing and reducing craving. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) provides a theoretical rationale for "acceptance" of drug-related thoughts and cravings, and proscribes suppression, a more intuitive and commonly used coping strategy. However, it remains largely unknown whether various coping strategies differentially affect craving intensity, drug use behavior, or other relevant outcomes during a craving episode. Using a randomized, between-subjects design (acceptance-based coping, suppression-based coping, or no coping instructions/control), the current study compared the effect …
