Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) can serve as a model system to study heritable skin diseases. The skin is rapidly developed during the first 5-6 days of embryonic growth, accompanied by expression of skin-specific genes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of wild-type zebrafish at day 5 reveals a two-cell-layer epidermis separated from the underlying collagenous stroma by a basement membrane with fully developed hemidesmosomes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals an ordered surface contour of keratinocytes with discrete microridges. To gain insight into epidermal morphogenesis, we have employed morpholino-mediated knockdown of the abca12 and snap29 genes, which are crucial for secretion of lipids and …

How can specialists in violence, such as the military or the police, commit not to expropriate from producers? In this paper we propose competition between these agents as one of the mechanisms that can deter predation. In our model, even if specialists in violence could expropriate all output costlessly, it is attractive to protect producers from predators. This is because there is a marginal defensive advantage and consequently defense is an effective way to potentially eliminate other specialists in violence, reducing competition and leading to higher future payoffs. Hence, producers can offer transfers to specialists in violence that make defense …

Earth ’s climate changes. It always has and always will. However, an extensive body of scientific evidence indicates that human activities are now a significant force driving change in the Earth’s climate system. This report describes how the climate of the Piscataqua/Great Bay region of coastal New Hampshire in the United States has changed over the past century and how the future climate of the region will be affected by human activities that are warming the planet.
Overall, the region has been getting warmer and wetter over the last century, and the rate of change has increased over the last …
A Variable Duty Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Wind Energy Conversion Systems., George Joseph 1988-
A Variable Duty Cycle Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Wind Energy Conversion Systems., George Joseph 1988-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes a new Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm employed in Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). One of the major issues discussed in the literature concerning HCS is its inefficiency in detecting the peak power when there is a change in wind •speed. In addition, the HCS produces oscillations in delivered power once this peak is detected. A modified HCS algorithm is proposed in this thesis to overcome these limitations. This algorithm employs a variable duty cycle to reduce the oscillations in delivered power once the peak power is detected. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated …

Linking Impulsivity And Inhibitory Control Using Manual And Oculomotor Response Inhibition Tasks, Walter Roberts, Mark T. Fillmore, Richard Milich
Psychology Faculty Publications
Separate cognitive processes govern the inhibitory control of manual and oculomotor movements. Despite this fundamental distinction, little is known about how these inhibitory control processes relate to more complex domains of behavioral functioning. This study sought to determine how these inhibitory control mechanisms relate to broadly defined domains of impulsive behavior. Thirty adults with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 28 comparison adults performed behavioral measures of inhibitory control and completed impulsivity inventories. Results suggest that oculomotor inhibitory control, but not manual inhibitory control, is related to specific domains of self-reported impulsivity. This finding was limited to the ADHD group; no …

We analyse European Central Bank (ECB) policy by estimating a forward-looking, augmented Taylor rule using expectations data. Specifically, we investigate the impact of the financial and sovereign debt crises on ECB policy. We find the European Overnight Index Average (EONIA) rises when expected economic activity is strong. Regardless of the inflation measure, inflation is not associated with the EONIA. Using a recursive estimation and a Chow test, we identify a policy shift in December 2008. The more generally accepted starting date of the crisis, August 2007, does not correspond to a statistically significant shift in the ECB policy. Using December …
Developing The Duffy Defect: Identifying Which Government Workers Are Constitutionally Required To Be Appointed, Stacy M. Lindstedt
Developing The Duffy Defect: Identifying Which Government Workers Are Constitutionally Required To Be Appointed, Stacy M. Lindstedt
Missouri Law Review
In 2007, Professor John Duffy wrote a brief article questioning whether administrative patent judges are constitutional officers and therefore subject to the Appointments Clause. A litigant latched onto the argument and challenged the validity of eight years of Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences determinations. Congress enacted a patch to provide for the appointment of patent judges, but the "Duffy Defect" did not stop there. Other scholars have questioned the constitutionality of various government actors from Bankruptcy Judges to the Pay Czar. The United States Tax Court dealt with a recent Appointments Clause challenge when a taxpayer questioned whether Internal …

The Headless Paragraph: Back-Forming Topic Sentences, Dan Gleason
Writing Bootcamp Unit
This exercise is designed to give students practice in creating and understanding topic sentences. Rather than asking students to create their own paragraphs headed with topic sentences, this exercise gives students the paragraphs and asks them to synthesize the topic sentences from the content provided. Such back-formation can help students grasp that a topic sentence does not merely start the paragraph, but also organizes and summarizes its key content.

What You Should Know (And Probably Don’T) About Teaching Ells, Nicole Sanchez
The Utah English Journal
As an intern teacher at a middle school in Payson, I struggled on a daily basis to juggle all the balls a teacher keeps in the air: trying to come up with engaging lesson plans, differentiated instruction, classroom management, connecting with parents, and so on. In January, just as I was finally getting to a point where I felt somewhat confident, Ana arrived. She had just moved to Utah from Mexico and was a brand new English Language Learner (ELL). Her vocabulary consisted entirely of “hi” and “good.” I was baffled as to what I could do. How could I …

Spectral Phonon Conduction And Dominant Scattering Pathways In Graphene, Dhruv Singh, Jayathi Murthy, Timothy Fisher
Birck and NCN Publications
In this paper, we examine the lattice thermal conductivity and dominant phonon scattering mechanisms of graphene. The interatomic interactions are modeled using the Tersoff interatomic potential and perturbation theory is applied to calculate the transition probabilities for three-phonon scattering. The matrix elements of the perturbing Hamiltonian are calculated using the anharmonic interatomic force constants obtained from the interatomic potential as well. The linearized Boltzmann transport equation is applied to compute the thermal conductivity of graphene for a wide range of parameters giving spectral and polarization-resolved information. The complete spectral detail of selection rules, important phonon scattering pathways, and phonon relaxation …

“That’S How You Know.”: Exploring Young Children’S Roles In Meaning Construction, Anne E. Gregory, Mary Ann Cahill
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Within the classroom, literacy learning plays a central role in what children are asked to adopt to be full functioning members of the culture. Children are asked to negotiate the signs of texts, as well as those of the classroom and larger society. The process of learning to read and write, needless to say, is a complex one. Research in reading has shown that to teach children how to participate in this culture successfully, teachers must build upon what children do well in a meaningful context (Calkins, 1980; Wray, 1997) as opposed to the teaching of skills and items in …

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Results of an analysis of nursing textbooks used in the Miami Valley, indicate that there is minimal emergency preparedness content included. The research was based on the textbooks used in the Introduction to Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, and Community Health Nursing classes at four local nursing schools: Sinclair Community College, Kettering College of Medical Arts, Cedarville University, and Wright State University. The Community Health Nursing classes have the most prepared content, and include extra content in the form of tables and pictures .The analysis indicates that Wright State University does the best job at preparing student nurses to be ready to …
Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley
Consistency In Statistical Moments As A Test For Bubble Cloud Clustering, Thomas C. Weber, Anthony P. Lyons, David L. Bradley
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Frequency dependent measurements of attenuation and/or sound speed through clouds of gas bubbles in liquids are often inverted to find the bubble size distribution and the void fraction of gas. The inversions are often done using an effective medium theory as a forward model under the assumption that the bubble positions are Poisson distributed (i.e., statistically independent). Under circumstances in which single scattering does not adequately describe the pressure field, the assumption of independence in position can yield large errors when clustering is present, leading to errors in the inverted bubble size distribution. It is difficult, however, to determine the …

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(24)H(22)O(4), contains one half-mol-ecule, the other half being generated by a crystallographic center of inversion. The central benzene ring makes a dihedral angle of 72.49 (5)° with the terminal benzene ring. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are linked through C-H⋯O inter-actions, forming a sheet structure parallel to the bc plane. The sheets are stacked along the a axis via π-π inter-actions formed between the terminal benzene rings [centroid-centroid separation = 3.7276 (6) Å].

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The title compound, C(13)H(10)Cl(2)N(2)S, represents a monoclinic polymorph of the previously reported ortho-rhom-bic form [Ramnathan et al. (1996 ▶). Acta Cryst. C52, 134-136]. The mol-ecule is twisted with the dihedral angle between the benzene rings being 55.37 (7)°. The N-H atoms are syn to each other, which contrasts their anti disposition in the ortho-rhom-bic form. In the crystal, mol-ecules assemble into zigzag chains along the c axis via N-H⋯S hydrogen bonds. Chains are connected into layers via C-H⋯Cl inter-actions, and these stack along the a axis.

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Letter of credit (LC) is a payment mechanism in international trade which is claimed to provide utmost security to the contracting parties compared to other methods of payment. The security provided by this device however does not extend to fraud risk. The nature of LC transactions and rampant development In technology has opened a pathway for fraudster to capitalize on the defendence of the parties to the LC transactions on paper-based documentation. Since LC documents can be easily fabricated, there are many occasions in which the payment by LC were refused in introductory trade relationship due to suspicion of fraudulent …

Geosynthetic reinforced segmental retaining walls (GR-SRWs) are in a period of development and have achieved popularity all over the world. Inclusion of geosynthetic layer at the interface has great influence on interface frictional performance of segmental retaining wall units. In this investigation, three (3) types of geosynthetic reinforcements were chosen and used to find out their influences on the interface shear capacity of newly designed and locally produced precast I-blocks. A series of direct shear tests were conducted using a specially designed and fabricated direct shear apparatus to assess the frictional characteristics of the blocks with geosynthetic inclusions. The results …

Islam And The Relation Of Science And The Qur'an, Mohd Yakub @ Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff, Majid Danehsgar
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The relation of science and religion is one of the most important interdisciplinary issues in the world from the past to the present. Any kinds of religion generally brought about a new challenging discussion with science; Islam and its scriptures are not exceptions in this case. The Qur'an as a main Islamic scripture has a direct relation with science and scientific matters according to many thinkers' declarations; it is obvious that there are opponents for this subject, on the other side. The purpose of this paper is to examine main categories of the relation of science and religion and then …

Neuronavigation Assisted Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Masaud Mohyuddin, Zain A Sobani, Montasir Junaid, Shehzad Ghaffar
Section of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery
In the past two decades, endoscopic sinus surgeries (ESS) have been widely advocated as a safe and effective treatment for disorders of paranasal sinuses that are refractory to medical therapy. ESS caters surgeons with two-dimensional visualization of the anatomical structures; however in scenarios where there is a close anatomical relation between the disease and delicate intracranial or intraorbital structures drastic complications can occur. Hence, endoscopic procedures had to be converted into open surgical procedures if the extent of the disease could not be visualized or cleared thoroughly. Recently however; neuronavigation systems have been combined with ESS to yield better results …

(Wp 2011-09) The Development Effects Of Natural Resources: A Geographical Dimension, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury
Economics Working Papers
Despite the recent growth resurgence, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the poorest region in the world. At the same time, it is a region that heavily relies on natural resources. In this paper we investigate the extent to which the second fact helps explain the first one. The distinctive feature of our study is that we take a geographical perspective and allow the effect of natural resources to differ across regions of the world. Our findings suggest that (i) the effect of natural resource intensity on per-capita income is positive and significant in general, but almost negligible and possibly negative in …
What African Americans Can Do To Bridge The Swimming Gap: A Call To Action, Steven Waller, Dawn M. Norwood
What African Americans Can Do To Bridge The Swimming Gap: A Call To Action, Steven Waller, Dawn M. Norwood
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Over the last ten years, the gap in swimming participation between Whites and other minority groups has been well documented. Moreover, the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints to swimming participation by African Americans have been clearly delineated. With the challenges surrounding the minority swimming gap acknowledged, the impetus should now be on creating strategies to rectify the problem. This paper argues for a collective effort on the part of the African American community to ameliorate the swimming gap, thus lessening the senseless deaths associated with it. In this paper strategic actions are outlined including advocacy and the creation of viable …
