Organizational Apologies: Bp As A Case Study, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Nov 2011

Organizational Apologies: Bp As A Case Study, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article examines the conduct of BP executives in the weeks following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to illuminate the use of apology by organizations. After briefly describing the value of apology and its nuances from an evolutionary perspective, the Article describes how apology and other responsibility-accepting behaviors can be mobilized by organizations to avoid the costs of its apparently careless conduct. In particular, organizations can designate particular agents as spokespersons who possess the ability to portray a sense of sincerity and regret. Moreover, reconciliation by ingroup members appears to be more common than is reconciliation by outgroup members, likely …

Should Bp Be Liable For Economic Losses Due To The Moratorium On Oil Drilling Imposed After The "Deepwater Horizon" Accident?, Steven Shavell Nov 2011

Should Bp Be Liable For Economic Losses Due To The Moratorium On Oil Drilling Imposed After The "Deepwater Horizon" Accident?, Steven Shavell

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon accident and the BP oil spill, the government imposed a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The issue addressed here is whether, on grounds of policy, BP should be held responsible for moratorium- related economic losses. The answer that is developed is no. The reason, in essence, is that, although the spill caused the moratorium, the moratorium might be viewed as a socially beneficial event on net because its purpose was to avert a significant danger.

Spatial Distribution Of Shore-Based Fishers In The Greater Perth Metropolitan Area Over Summer 2010/2011, Claire B. Smallwood, Emily A. Fisher, Brent S. Wise, Daniel J. Gaughan Nov 2011

Spatial Distribution Of Shore-Based Fishers In The Greater Perth Metropolitan Area Over Summer 2010/2011, Claire B. Smallwood, Emily A. Fisher, Brent S. Wise, Daniel J. Gaughan

Fisheries Research Reports

Aerial surveys are a useful technique for estimating numbers of recreational fishers. Following the success of a pilot study to examine the spatial patterns of recreational shore-based fishing activity in the Perth Metropolitan area from April – June 2010, another survey was conducted from December 2010 – February 2011 between Lancelin – Bunbury. More than 7,000 shorebased fishers were counted during 36 aerial flights, with significantly more recorded on morning and afternoon flights, when compared to those conducted at midday. Flights on weekends/public holidays also recorded more fishers than weekdays. The spatial distribution of fishers was variable along the coast, …

Mapping Shallow Coastal Ecosystems: A Case Study Of A Rhode Island Lagoon, Mark Stolt, Michael Bradley, Jim Turenne, Maggie Payne, Eric Scherer, Giancarlo Cicchetti, Emily Shumchenia, Marisa Guarinello, John W. King, Jon Boothroyd, Bryan Oakley, Carol Thornber, Pete August

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

In order to effectively study, manage, conserve, and sustain shallow-subtidal ecosystems, a spatial inventory of the basic resources and habitats is essential. Because of the complexities of shallow-subtidal substrates, benthic communities, geology, geomorphology, and water column attributes, few standard protocols are fully articulated and tested that describe the mapping and inventory processes and accompanying interpretations. In this paper, we describe a systematic approach to map Rhode Island’s shallow-subtidal coastal lagoon ecosystems, by using, integrating, and reconciling multiple data sets to identify the geology, soils, biological communities, and environments that, collectively, define each shallow-subtidal habitat. We constructed maps for these lagoons …

Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D. Nov 2011

Current Economic Situation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Goran Mirascic Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article provides an overview of the current economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Beginning in the second half of 2008, macroeconomic conditions in B&H began precipitating a decline in economic activity. While the global financial crisis was among the factors contributing to this decline, it was far from the only factor. Problematic macroeconomic conditions were also a result of B&H’s own structural and political problems, caused largely by the shortcomings of a political entity comprising two autonomous entities. Due to such problems, the governments of B&H turned to the International Monetary Fund for assistance. This article analyzes the effects …

Asymmetry In Cross-Conflict Collaboration: Is There A Gender Factor?, Galia Golan Nov 2011

Asymmetry In Cross-Conflict Collaboration: Is There A Gender Factor?, Galia Golan

Peace and Conflict Studies

Asymmetry of power is an acknowledged phenomenon in negotiation, and there are a number of devices for dealing with it. Similarly, alternative dispute resolution seeks to neutralize asymmetry of power by using an interest-based model of cross-conflict collaboration, but research has indicated that asymmetry persists nonetheless. The role of gender in negotiation has been researched, and to a far lesser degree, also with regard to alternative dispute resolution. Some of the gender in negotiation research has introduced the element of asymmetry of power as well. Prompted by the highlighting of asymmetry in Israeli-Palestinian all-women alternative dispute resolution (cross-conflict collaboration), the …

Cagan Type Rational Expectations Model On Time Scales With Their Applications To Economics, Funda Ekiz Nov 2011

Cagan Type Rational Expectations Model On Time Scales With Their Applications To Economics, Funda Ekiz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Rational expectations provide people or economic agents making future decision with available information and past experiences. The first approach to the idea of rational expectations was given approximately fifty years ago by John F. Muth. Many models in economics have been studied using the rational expectations idea. The most familiar one among them is the rational expectations version of the Cagans hyperination model where the expectation for tomorrow is formed using all the information available today. This model was reinterpreted by Thomas J. Sargent and Neil Wallace in 1973. After that time, many solution techniques were suggested to solve the …

Effects Of Teaching Methods On Swimming Skill Acquisition In Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder, Susan Oh, Melissa Licari, Brendan Lay, Brian Blanksby Nov 2011

Effects Of Teaching Methods On Swimming Skill Acquisition In Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder, Susan Oh, Melissa Licari, Brendan Lay, Brian Blanksby

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This study compared the delivery of “verbal and visual” with “verbal, visual and tactile” swimming instruction to small groups of DCD pupils for front crawl and backstroke performance across 10 lessons x 30 minutes/week. The interaction and main effects for group and time on front crawl performances were not significant, indicating no differences were found between the two teaching methods. Also, the front crawl performances of the DCD swimmers did not change over the intervention period. The interaction and main effect for group on backstroke performances over the 10 weekly lessons were not significant. However, a significant main effect of …

Restorative Classrooms: Critical Peace Education In A Juvenile Detention Home, Cheryl Duckworth Nov 2011

Restorative Classrooms: Critical Peace Education In A Juvenile Detention Home, Cheryl Duckworth

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article describes several of the more successful critical peace education methodologies and perspectives that I was able to bring to my classroom in a juvenile detention home. For example, reflective writing and community analysis of nonviolent peace movements formed the core of my curriculum, as did critical analysis of the social processes of stereotyping and dehumanization. As a result, numerous students grew in their ability to write, express empathy with others, identify bias and articulate critical analysis of their schools, among other political systems. This analysis will contribute to the growing body of work on the practice of critical …

Towards A Metatheory Of Budgeting, Dan Williams, Thad D. Calabrese Nov 2011

Towards A Metatheory Of Budgeting, Dan Williams, Thad D. Calabrese

Publications and Research

In this paper. we suggest that many budget theories actually are about appropriating and not about budgeting. We trace this development back to the classic budgeting question posed by V.O. Keys in 1940. To clarify the issue, we examine early normative theories of budgeting, and apply many contemporary theories about budgeting to the budgeting process advocated for in this early work. By analyzing current theories, we show that budget theories are, in many cases, simply focused on parts of the budget process or on the role of techniques in decision making. Our analyses suggest that rather than theories competing with …

Deepwater Drilling: Law, Policy, And Economics Of Firm Organization And Safety, Mark A. Cohen Nov 2011

Deepwater Drilling: Law, Policy, And Economics Of Firm Organization And Safety, Mark A. Cohen

Vanderbilt Law Review

Nathan Richardson 64 Vand. L. Rev. 1853 (2011) Although the causes of the Deepwater Horizon spill are not yet conclusively identified, significant attention has focused on the safety-related policies and practices-often referred to as the safety culture-of BP and other firms involved in drilling the well. This Article defines and characterizes the economic and policy forces that affect safety culture and identifies reasons why those forces may or may not be adequate or effective from the public's perspective. Two potential justifications for policy intervention are that: (1) not all of the social costs of a spill may be internalized by …

Legislative Recommendations For A Statewide Farm-To-School Bill In Mississippi, Harvard Law School Health Law And Policy Clinic, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

As states and school districts around the country consider strategies to address childhood obesity, programs that connect schools with local farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables have emerged as effective means of improving fruit and vegetable consumption. Equally important, these programs spur economic development by creating a market for the sale of produce grown by local farmers, in which individual and governmental “food dollars” can be increasingly spent within the state. In 2010, over 2000 farm-to-school programs were in operation and 25 states had state-level farm-to-school policies.

Localisation To Lipid Rafts Correlates With Increased Function Of The Gal/Galnac Lectin In The Human Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Brenda H. Welter Nov 2011

Localisation To Lipid Rafts Correlates With Increased Function Of The Gal/Galnac Lectin In The Human Protozoan Parasite, Entamoeba Histolytica, Brenda H. Welter

Publications

Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of dysentery and liver abscess and is prevalent in developing countries. Adhesion to the host is critical to infection and is mediated by amoebic surface receptors. One such receptor, the Gal/GalNAc lectin, binds to galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues on host components and consists of heavy (Hgl), light (Lgl) and intermediate (Igl) subunits. The mechanism by which the lectin assembles into a functional complex is not known. The parasite also relies on cholesterol-rich domains (lipid rafts) for adhesion. Therefore, it is conceivable that rafts regulate the assembly or function of the lectin. To test …

Northern Michigan University: A Case Study Of The Perceptions Of Faculty Seeking A Balance Of Teaching, Scholarship And Service, Erica L. Goff Ms.

All NMU Master's Theses

No two institutions are mirror images of each other such that identical descriptions, policies, procedures or needs apply to all. Such an assumption is too simplistic when universities are adequately analyzed. Northern Michigan University is a primarily undergraduate institution in the Midwest region of the United States that sits on the coast of Lake Superior, is the home of the Upper Peninsula Brain Tumor Center, offers unique outdoor resources year-round, and boasts a set of strengths, weaknesses, faculty, policies, benefits and a climate that cannot be replicated. Thus, it is distinctive, but like many other comprehensive universities, fosters a confused …

Supplemental Fish Oil Decreases Urinary Excretion Of A Marker Of Bone Resorption In Healthy Adults, Eric E. Noreen, Josef Brandauer, Megan H. Macnabb

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Incorporation of fish oil (FO) into the diet of rodents has been shown to result in positive changes in bone health. Currently it is poorly understood if FO has the same effects on bone health in humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of supplemental FO on levels of urinary N-terminal cross-linked telopeptide (NTx), which is a marker of bone breakdown, and how this is related to the morning levels of salivary cortisol and urinary excretion of interleukin 6 (IL-6).

Methods: A total of twenty-eight females and twelve males(35 ± 13yrs; 69.1 ± 14.1kg; 29.4 …
