Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith
Pragmatism And Meaning: Assessing The Message Of Star Trek: The Original Series, Anne Collins Smith, Owen M. Smith
Faculty Publications
The original Star Trek television series purported to depict a future in which such evils as sexism and racism do not exist, and intelligent beings from numerous planets live in a condition of peace and mutual benefit. As many scholars have observed, from a standpoint of contemporary theoretical analysis, Star Trek: The Original Series contains many elements that are inimical to the utopia it claims to depict and thus undermine its supposed message. A different perspective may be gained by drawing on the American pragmatist movement, in which the value of an idea is judged by its effectiveness, how it …

Acetaminophen: Beyond Pain And Fever-Relieving, Eric R. Blough, Miaozong Wu
MIIR Faculty Research
Acetaminophen, also known as APAP or paracetamol, is one of the most widely used analgesics (pain reliever) and antipyretics (fever reducer). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, currently there are 235 approved prescription and over-the-counter drug products containing acetaminophen as an active ingredient. When used as directed, acetaminophen is very safe and effective; however when taken in excess or ingested with alcohol hepatotoxicity and irreversible liver damage can arise. In addition to well known use pain relief and fever reduction, recent laboratory and pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that acetaminophen may also have beneficial effects on blood glucose levels, …

While emphasis on writing instruction has been a main concern in teaching Spanish to bilingual students in the U. S., it is an area in which very few theoretical advances have been made; in Mexico’s case the situation is even more challenging. Therefore, based on classroom observations, and individual interviews with both teachers and students, and on the collection of class syllabi, this paper seeks to describe the current state of affairs regarding Spanish and English writing instruction for bilingual students in both countries. The main objectives are: 1) the analysis and comparison of the diverse teaching methodologies that high …

Discriminant Analysis For Repeated Measures Data: Effects Of Mean And Covariance Misspecification On Bias And Error In Discriminant Function Coefficients, Tolulope T. Sajobi, Lisa M. Lix, Longhai Li, William Laverty
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Discriminant analysis (DA) procedures based on parsimonious mean and/or covariance structures have been proposed for repeated measures (RM) data. Bias and means square error of discriminant function coefficients (DFCs) for DA procedures are investigated when the mean and/or covariance structures are correctly specified and misspecified.
Construction Of Control Charts Based On Six Sigma Initiatives For The Number Of Defects And Average Number Of Defects Per Unit, R. Radhakrishnan, P. Balamurugan
Construction Of Control Charts Based On Six Sigma Initiatives For The Number Of Defects And Average Number Of Defects Per Unit, R. Radhakrishnan, P. Balamurugan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A control chart is a statistical device used for the study and control of a repetitive process. In 1931, Shewart suggested control charts based on 3 sigma limits. Today manufacturing companies around the world apply Six Sigma initiatives, with a result offewer product defects. Companies practicing Six Sigma initiatives are expected to produce 3.4 or less number of defects per million opportunities, a concept suggested by Motorola in 1980. If companies practicing Six Sigma initiatives use control limits suggested by Shewhart, then no points will fall outside the control limits due to the improvement in the quality of the process. …

Explicit Equations For Acf In Autoregressive Processes In The Presence Of Heteroscedasticity Disturbances, Samir Safi
Explicit Equations For Acf In Autoregressive Processes In The Presence Of Heteroscedasticity Disturbances, Samir Safi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The autocorrelation function, ACF, is an important guide to the properties of a time series. Explicit equations are derived for ACF in the presence of heteroscedasticity disturbances in pth order autoregressive, AR(p), processes. Two cases are presented: (1) when the disturbance term follows the general covariance matrix, Σ , and (2) when the diagonal elements of Σ are not all identical but σi,j = 0 ∀i ≠ j.

Robust Inference For Regression With Spatially Correlated Errors, Juchi Ou, Jeffrey M. Albert
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A robust variance estimator for a regression model with spatially correlated errors is proposed using the estimated empirical covariogram. Simulations studies show unbiasedness and robustness for the OLS but not for the GLS estimates. The new robust variance estimation method is applied to hospital quality data.. Stephanie A.

Homeostatic property clusters (HPCs) are offered as a way of understanding natural kinds, especially biological species. I review the HPC approach and then discuss an objection by Ereshefsky and Matthen, to the effect that an HPC qua cluster seems ill-fitted as a description of a polymorphic species. The standard response by champions of the HPC approach is to say that all members of a polymorphic species have things in common, namely dispositions or conditional properties. I argue that this response fails. Instances of an HPC kind need not all be similar in their exhibited properties. Instead, HPCs should instead be …

Cultural Traditions And The Treatment Of Freeriders, Christina Pomianek Ph.D., Craig T. Palmer Ph.D., Reed L. Wadley Ph.D., Katherine Coe Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Evolutionary approaches to the explanation of human behavior are often employed in hypotheses about the toleration and punishment of freeriders. Despite the explanatory potential of evolutionary perspectives, many such perspectives ignore the unique human factor that has influenced the economic, social, and political contexts within which, up until very recently in human existence, reactions to freeriding always occurred. This human factor is the role of cultural traditions (i.e., behaviors passed down from ancestors to descendants). Cultural traditions necessarily play an important role in identifying, defining, preventing, and determining the treatment of freeriders because many traditional moral codes apply specifically to …

Spiritual Direction And Evangelicals : Exploring Its Growth, Margie Van Duzer
Spiritual Direction And Evangelicals : Exploring Its Growth, Margie Van Duzer
Doctor of Ministry
During the last thirty years interest in the ministry of spiritual direction has grown rapidly within evangelical circles. This paper explores the conditions that have nurtured this change. Specifically, this dissertation defines and describes spiritual direction, sets forth its biblical and historical context, and then explores a variety of factors that help explain its increase in popularity among evangelicals. In the final chapter, the dissertation turns to a consideration of how best to prepare the growing number of evangelical spiritual directors and proposes an outline of a curriculum for a spiritual direction equipping program.
The paper is divided into three …

Deepwater Drilling: Law, Policy, And Economics Of Firm Organization And Safety, Mark A. Cohen, Madeline Gottlieb, Joshua Linn, Nathan Richardson
Vanderbilt Law Review
Although the causes of the Deepwater Horizon spill are not yet conclusively identified, significant attention has focused on the safety-related policies and practices-often referred to as the safety culture-of BP and other firms involved in drilling the well. This Article defines and characterizes the economic and policy forces that affect safety culture and identifies reasons why those forces may or may not be adequate or effective from the public's perspective. Two potential justifications for policy intervention are that: (1) not all of the social costs of a spill may be internalized by a firm; and (2) there may be principal-agent …
Estimating Correlation Under Interval Uncertainty, Ali Jalal-Kamali, Vladik Kreinovich
Estimating Correlation Under Interval Uncertainty, Ali Jalal-Kamali, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many engineering situations, we are interested in finding the correlation ρ between different quantities x and y based on the values xi and yi of these quantities measured in different situations i. Measurements are never absolutely accurate; it is therefore necessary to take this inaccuracy into account when estimating the correlation ρ. Sometimes, we know the probabilities of different values of measurement errors, but in many cases, we only know the upper bounds Δxi and Δyi on the corresponding measurement errors. In such situations, after we get the measurement results Xi and Yi …
