Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: Ghrelin, a stomach-derived, secreted peptide, and its receptor (growth hormone secretagogue receptor, GHSR) are known to modulate food intake and energy homeostasis. The ghrelin system is also expressed broadly in cardiovascular tissues. Since ghrelin has been associated with anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic properties, but is also well known to promote obesity and impair glucose metabolism, we investigated whether ghrelin has any impact on the development of atherosclerosis. The hypothesis that endogenous ghrelin signaling may be involved in atherosclerosis has not been tested previously.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We crossed ghrelin receptor knockout mice (GHSr-/-) into a low-density lipoprotein receptor-null …

Cointegration Of International Stock Markets: An Investigation Of Diversification Opportunities, Taimur A. Khan Nov 2011

Cointegration Of International Stock Markets: An Investigation Of Diversification Opportunities, Taimur A. Khan

Undergraduate Economic Review

Abstract: This paper examines the long-run convergence of the United States and 22 other developed and developing countries. I use daily data and run the Johansen (1988) and the Gregory and Hansen (1996) test to show that stock markets of most countries have become cointegrated by 2010. I also look at short-run diversification opportunities across the countries by comparing their daily returns to the daily returns of the global index (S&P 1200). China, Malaysia and Austria stand out as countries with highly favorable diversification opportunities as they are not cointegrated about with the US and are insensitive to the global …

Enhancing Student Learning With Case-Based Teaching And Audience Response Systems In An Interdisciplinary Food Science Course, Davide Giacalone

Higher Learning Research Communications

A growing body of research in higher education suggests that teachers should move away from traditional lecturing towards more active and student-focus education approaches. Several classroom techniques are available to engage students and achieve more effective teaching and better learning experiences. The purpose of this paper is to share an example of how two of them – case-based teaching, and the use of response technologies – were implemented into a graduate-level food science course. The paper focuses in particular on teaching sensory science and sensometrics, including several concrete examples used during the course, and discussing in each case some of …

A Cognitive Inventory Of Business Students, Dale Krueger Nov 2011

A Cognitive Inventory Of Business Students, Dale Krueger

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Different cognitive-psychological assessments in higher education can help students to understand their own thinking and behavior patterns and help them to plan and have a successful career. In the 1970's Mintzberg drew attention to two different styles on thinking: the use of the left side of the brain versus the right side of the brain. According to Mintzberg the analytical side of brain, which is the left side, focuses on planning. The holistic side of brain is the right side and it focuses on management. Until the 1970's the trend in business was to favor analytical thinking as opposed to …

Considering Quality Control In Distance And Online Education: A Commentary, Richard Roe

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Quality control measures are needed in distance education. The author examined the strengths and weaknesses of course delivery in distance education and provided recommendations for a successful series of steps that should be followed in course development to assure quality control. Quality control measures can become valuable tools to enhance the educational delivery of distance and online coursework and develop the professional competence of instructors. Measures can range from course oversight by trained personnel, to mandated components that are common within all courses. New technologies especially in rich multimedia and asynchronous communication methods allow for increased learning opportunities. Students can …

Teaching Religion In The Deep South, William L. Smith Nov 2011

Teaching Religion In The Deep South, William L. Smith

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to generate discussion about the teaching and learning sociology and religious studies using the "study in depth" method. In addition, the author shares with readers how one course, and a specific set of readings contributed to a department's overall plan for study in depth in sociology. Study in depth is defined as the comprehension of "a complex structure of knowledge" (Association of American Colleges). It uses a multidisciplinary approach that is vital to teaching and learning sociology, religious studies, and other subjects. Sociology of Religion at this university is an upper-division elective for sociology …

Phylogenomic-Based Case Study: An Undergraduate Research Pedagogy At Kentucky State University, The Only Historically Black College And University In The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Narayanan Rajendran, William Mazhawidza

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Currently the undergraduate biology curriculum at 2 and 4-year colleges especially in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is undergoing a facelift by implementing a range of recommendations of committees on education. This has produced a demand to educate and train the current and future generation of undergraduates as scientists capable to perform modern biological research that is heavily dependent on genomic training, such as phylogenomics. It is our observation that the HBCUs may not have a strong infrastructure enough to meet this challenge without the development of vigorous research-based learning programs to complement the traditional lecture-only based configuration. In …

Web 2.0 Technologies In Higher Education Teaching: A Practical Introduction, Susan Berg Nov 2011

Web 2.0 Technologies In Higher Education Teaching: A Practical Introduction, Susan Berg

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Web 2.0 tools are websites that are interactive, allowing users not only to read information but also to create products and interact with others. These tools offer new opportunities for designing instruction for heightened student engagement, particularly with “digital natives.” Yet often faculty are unaware of what these tools can do, are uncertain of how to use them, and leery of the time required to design instruction incorporating them. This paper is a very practical introduction to using common Web 2.0 tools including wikis, blogs, and social bookmarking sites. Sample assignments developed and used by the author or described in …

On The Nonlinear Causality Between Inflation And Its Uncertainty In G-3 Countries, Esin Cakan, Zeynel Abidin Ozdemir, Mehmet Balcilar Nov 2011

On The Nonlinear Causality Between Inflation And Its Uncertainty In G-3 Countries, Esin Cakan, Zeynel Abidin Ozdemir, Mehmet Balcilar

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

This study examines the dynamic relationship between monthly inflation and inflation uncertainty in Japan, the US and the UK by employing linear and nonlinear Granger causality tests for the 1957:01-2006:10 period. Using a generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model to generate a measure of inflation uncertainty, the empirical evidence from the linear and nonlinear Granger causality tests indicate a bi-directional causality between the series. The estimates from both the linear vector autoregressive (VAR) and nonparametric regression models show that higher inflation rates lead to greater inflation uncertainty for all countries as predicted by Friedman (1977). Although VAR estimates imply no …

The Wage Gap Revisited: An Investigation Of Salary Request Differences Among Black-White And Male-Female Workers, Andrea L. Briggs

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This study examined wage gaps in the workforce and discussed explanations for why these gaps exist. Specifically, this study investigated the differences between men and women and Blacks and Whites in the amount of salary requested for a new job. Current worker data from an international job board was examined. Workers were Black or White males or females, who were at least 25 years of age and had at least one full-time job. Only annual salary data was used in analysis. When controlling for education and experience, results supported the hypotheses predicting current salary differences between Whites and Blacks and …

Human Rights Law And Military Aid Delivery: A Case Study Of The Leahy Law, Winifred Tate Nov 2011

Human Rights Law And Military Aid Delivery: A Case Study Of The Leahy Law, Winifred Tate

Faculty Scholarship

Explicitly prohibiting US military counternarcotics assistance to foreign military units facing credible allegations of abuses, Leahy Law creation and implementation illuminates the epistemological challenges of knowledge production about violence in the policy process. First passed in 1997, the law emerged from strategic alliances between elite NGO advocates, grassroots activists and critically located Congressional aides in response to the perceived inability of Congress to act on human rights information. I explore the resulting transformation of aid delivery: rather than suspend aid when no “clean” units could be found, US officials convinced their Colombian allies to create new units consisting of vetted …

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Bisphosphate (Pip2) Controls Magnesium Gatekeeper Trpm6 Activity, Jia Xie, Baonan Sun, Jianyang Du, Wenzhong Yang, Lixia Yue Nov 2011

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Bisphosphate (Pip2) Controls Magnesium Gatekeeper Trpm6 Activity, Jia Xie, Baonan Sun, Jianyang Du, Wenzhong Yang, Lixia Yue

UCHC Articles - Research

TRPM6 is crucial for human Mg2+ homeostasis as patients carrying TRPM6 mutations develop hypomagnesemia and secondary hypocalcemia (HSH). However, the activation mechanism of TRPM6 has remained unknown. Here we demonstrate that phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphophate (PIP2) controls TRPM6 activation and Mg2+ influx. Stimulation of PLC-coupled M1-receptors to deplete PIP2 potently inactivates TRPM6. Translocation of over-expressed 5-phosphatase to cell membrane to specifically hydrolyze PIP2 also completely inhibits TRPM6. Moreover, depolarization-induced-activation of the voltage-sensitive-phosphatase (Ci-VSP) simultaneously depletes PIP2 and inhibits TRPM6. PLC-activation induced PIP2-depletion not only inhibits TRPM6, but also abolishes TRPM6-mediated Mg2+ influx. Furthermore, …

Associations Of Ionizing Radiation And Breast Cancer-Related Serum Hormone And Growth Factor Levels In Cancer-Free Female A-Bomb Survivors, Richard G. Stevens Nov 2011

Associations Of Ionizing Radiation And Breast Cancer-Related Serum Hormone And Growth Factor Levels In Cancer-Free Female A-Bomb Survivors, Richard G. Stevens

UCHC Articles - Research

Levels of exposure to ionizing radiation are increasing for women worldwide due to the widespread use of CT and other radiologic diagnostic modalities. Exposure to ionizing radiation as well as increased levels of estradiol and other sex hormones are acknowledged breast cancer risk factors, but the effects of whole-body radiation on serum hormone levels in cancer-free women are unknown. This study examined whether ionizing radiation exposure is associated with levels of serum hormones and other markers that may mediate radiation-associated breast cancer risk. Serum samples were measured from cancer-free women who attended biennial health examinations with a wide range of …

Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro Nov 2011

Compassion And Coalitions: A Review Of Reshaping The Work Family Debate: Why Men And Class Matter By Joan Williams, Carolyn Shapiro

All Faculty Scholarship

Reshaping the Work-Family Debate: Why Men and Class Matter by Joan Williams is illuminating, intellectually challenging, and insightful. It is not, however, a typical law professor book. Neither academic inquiry nor policy analysis (although it contains elements of both), Reshaping the Work-Family Debate is more of a manifesto. Williams seeks measurable and meaningful change in the family and work lives of Americans, even if that change is imperfect or incomplete, and she sees theoretical or ideological rigidity as one obstacle to such change.

Williams believes that coalition-building is essential to addressing the work family challenges she identifies. Although she has …
