Come hear Esera Tuaolo's searing story of terror and hope on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 7:30 PM in Edwards Hall Auditorium. Tuaolo, a Samoan raised on a Hawaiian banana plantation, had a natural talent, football. He went on to play for five NFL teams: the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers, and the Atlanta Falcons in the 1999 Super Bowl. But for the nine years he played professional football he lived in terror that when his face flashed upon the TV screen, someone would divulge his darkest secret. Esera Tuaolo is gay. …

Commentary On "Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing", Matthew Sanders Nov 2011

Commentary On "Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing", Matthew Sanders

Journal of Family Strengths

There is a growing consensus among professionals working with parents and children, and advocates for child rights, that a ban on the use of corporal punishment (CP) in raising children is justified in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC, 1989). However, this is an issue which seems to polarize people and opponents of banning CP have attacked the scientific literature and made dire predictions of adverse consequences if parents are not allowed to use CP. The problem is that so much attention has been focused on the “to spank or not to spank” …

Influence Of Supraglottal Geometry And Modeling Choices On The Flow-Induced Vibration Of A Computational Vocal Fold Model, Timothy E. Shurtz Nov 2011

Influence Of Supraglottal Geometry And Modeling Choices On The Flow-Induced Vibration Of A Computational Vocal Fold Model, Timothy E. Shurtz

Theses and Dissertations

Computational models of the flow-induced vibrations of the vocal folds are powerful tools that can be used in conjunction with physical experiments to better understand voice production. This thesis research has been performed to contribute to the understanding of vocal fold dynamics as well as several aspects of computational modeling of the vocal folds. In particular, the effects of supraglottal geometry have been analyzed using a computational model of the vocal folds and laryngeal airway. In addition, three important computational modeling parameters (contact line location, Poisson's ratio, and symmetry assumptions) have been systematically varied to determine their influence on model …

Improved Stereo Vision Methods For Fpga-Based Computing Platforms, Wade S. Fife Nov 2011

Improved Stereo Vision Methods For Fpga-Based Computing Platforms, Wade S. Fife

Theses and Dissertations

Stereo vision is a very useful, yet challenging technology for a wide variety of applications. One of the greatest challenges is meeting the computational demands of stereo vision applications that require real-time performance. The FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is a readily-available technology that allows many stereo vision methods to be implemented while meeting the strict real-time performance requirements of some applications. Some of the best results have been obtained using non-parametric stereo correlation methods, such as the rank and census transform. Yet relatively little work has been done to study these methods or to propose new algorithms based on …

The 31S(p,γ)32Cl reaction is expected to provide the dominant break-out path from the SiP cycle in novae and is important for understanding enrichments of sulfur observed in some nova ejecta. We studied the 32S(3He,t)32Cl charge-exchange reaction to determine properties of proton-unbound levels in 32Cl that have previously contributed significant uncertainties to the 31S(p,γ)32Cl reaction rate. Measured triton magnetic rigidities were used to determine excitation energies in 32Cl. Proton-branching ratios were obtained by detecting decay protons from unbound 32Cl states in coincidence with tritons. An improved 31S(p,γ)32Cl reaction rate was calculated including robust statistical and systematic uncertainties. © 2011 American Physical …

The Decision-Making Process Of Finding Students With Significant Intellectual Disabilities Eligible For Participation In The Virginia Alternate Assessment Program, Karren Streagle

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the decision-making process used by IEP teams and case managers for students with significant intellectual disabilities who participate in alternate assessments based on aligned academic achievement standards (AA-AAS). Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with case managers for students participating in the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) from school divisions in central Virginia. Traditional inductive data analysis techniques were used to analyze data collected from the in-depth interviews, the researcher’s reflexive field notes and observations, and a review of VAAP training and guidance documents provided by study participants. Findings illuminated the decision-making process …

Use Of Historic Tax Credits For School Construction In Virginia: Costs, Benefits, Administrative Implications, And Public Policy Issues, Paola Brooks Nov 2011

Use Of Historic Tax Credits For School Construction In Virginia: Costs, Benefits, Administrative Implications, And Public Policy Issues, Paola Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

A number of studies show that school facilities in the United States are deteriorating and that a substantial outlay of financial capital is required to bring school facilities to good overall condition. The current economic environment, marked by slow growth, high unemployment, and low tax revenues has highlighted widespread issues with the financial condition and fiscal sustainability of local governments. While studies show that the success of the educational process is related to the condition of school facilities, providing a safe and effective educational environment for students and teachers is a great challenge for local governments. Alternative sources of funding …

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur Nov 2011

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations

People are nomadic; traveling from place to place. As a user travels, he may need access to his digital information, including his data, applications, and settings. A convenient way to supply this access is to have the user carry that digital information in a portable computer such as a laptop or smart phone. As Moore's Law continues to operate, devices such as smart phones can easily perform the computing necessary for a user's work. Unfortunately, the amount of data a human can receive and convey through such devices is limited. To receive more information humans require more screen real estate. …

Barriers To Persistence In Adult Basic Education: The Experiences Of African American Learners, Simone Thomas Nov 2011

Barriers To Persistence In Adult Basic Education: The Experiences Of African American Learners, Simone Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

One of the most pervasive issues facing educators and administrators in Adult Basic Education (ABE) is student persistence. The purposes of this qualitative study were 1) to identify the experiences that African American adult learners associated with their decisions to leave ABE programs; 2) to ascertain the impact of participants' perceptions of participation in ABE relative to their self perceptions and individual learning goals; and 3) to examine the extent to which barriers perceived by participants were consistent with barriers identified in the existing literature. Three research questions guided this study: 1) what experiences do participants associate with past decisions …

An Evaluation Of Ethnic Representation Within Three Third Grade Basal Reading Series, Ashlee Hirsh Horton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This content analysis study examined 99 basal reading narratives from three publishers: Harcourt, SRA-McGraw Hill and Scott Foresman. The stories were classified according to the ethnicity of major characters. The observed frequencies were compared to the expected frequencies to indicate over representation, adequate representation or under representation based on the ethnic breakdown of the student population on the state of Tennessee and national levels. The stories identified "African American" (n = 18) were investigated further to determine if the elements of quality African American literature (Hefflin & Barksdale-Ladd. 2001) were present. Cohen's Kappa indicated strong agreement between the two raters …
