Sleep Quality, Technostress, And Maladaptive Use Of Technology: Predictors Of Depression Among College Students, Michelle Staley Goddard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Depression among college students is a substantial concern due to the risk of suicide, academic failure, and other psychosocial problems. Current literature suggests that the prevalence of depression among populations of college students has risen in the past two decades whereas sleep quality has decreased and technology use has increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways that sleep quality, technostress, and misuse of technology might be associated with depression among college students. A total of 236 college undergraduates from a large, urban university were surveyed. Independent samples t tests revealed no mean group differences between men …

Kipp Student Perceptions And Achievement Goal Orientations, Donna R. Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Despite decades of research on achievement goals, little research evaluates achievement goal orientations in African American students, particularly African American males. This study, therefore, examines the relationship between students' achievement goal orienations and students' academic self-efficacy. A social cognitive framework describes this association, and the relationship between students' achievement goal orientations and students' perceptions of the classroom goal structures. In addition, the relationship between students' achievement goal orientations and students' beliefs about the relevance of school for future success was analyzed. Participants were eighth-grade students (N = 70) enrolled in a charter school in the Knowledge is Power Program. Results …
Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder
Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The plasma membrane acts as a functional interface between the cytoplasm and the outer environment of a cell. The plasma membrane is composed of different types of lipids and proteins, and is underlined with a cytoskeleton meshwork. The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cell exhibits compositional heterogeneities in the form of nanoscale-lipid domains, called lipid rafts. The domains in model membranes are large micron-scale domains, larger than the nanoscale lipid rafts in the plasma membrane. In the present work, the hypothesis made earlier by Kusumi et al. has been addressed through large scale Langevin molecular dynamics simulations of a model recently …

Efficient Traffic Crash And Snow Complaint Gis System, Anthony B. Ngo
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We describe the design and implementation of a traffic crash and snow complaint GIS system developed for the Lincoln Public Works department. We also describe a novel geocoding algorithm that was used to move data from the older Criminal Justice Information System, which is a relational database, to the new GIS system. In addition, we describe the implementation of several indexing algorithms that enable the system to efficiently answer rectangular range queries and queries about the relative locations of moving objects. Finally, in many applications (on-line analysis or mobile GIS), we need to execute spatial query efficiently (fast and small), …

Reflecting On The Past; Shaping The Future Of Student Affairs, Michael J. Stebleton, Marina B. Aleixo
Reflecting On The Past; Shaping The Future Of Student Affairs, Michael J. Stebleton, Marina B. Aleixo
New York Journal of Student Affairs
The purpose of this essay is to invite student affairs educators to reflect on the past to help shape the future of the profession. The metaphor of a public art exhibit with five reflective questions is used to inspire educators to think critically about student engagement. As the demographics of students pursuing higher education changes, we urge a recommitment to historically underserved student populations. This call to service invokes a social justice philosophy when we serve historically marginalized student groups, including immigrants, students of color, and first-generation learners. Doing so will engage students and reenergize our commitment to the profession.

Evaluation Of Carbon Filament Electrodes For Determination Of 2,6-Diisopropylphenol (Propofol) In Aqueous And Organic Solutions, James Bereman Sheppard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Since the common anaesthetic drug 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) has a narrow physiological range, the administration of this drug could be improved through the development of a feedback-controlled delivery system. An evaluation of several carbon filaments was conducted to determine their capability to serve as the detecting element in such a system. Planar electrochemical cells (PECs) were fabricated with working electrodes made from three carbon filaments: Goodfellow (GF) carbon fibers, 11μm diameter; Bioanalytical Systems (BAS) carbon fibers, 9μm diameter; Specialty Materials (SM) glassy carbon monofilaments, 34.5μm diameter. The cells were used to make multiple, successive determinations of propofol – via cyclic voltammetry …

Security Applications Of Formal Language Theory, Len Sassaman, Meredith L. Patterson, Sergey Bratus, Michael E. Locasto, Anna Shubina
Computer Science Technical Reports
We present an approach to improving the security of complex, composed systems based on formal language theory, and show how this approach leads to advances in input validation, security modeling, attack surface reduction, and ultimately, software design and programming methodology. We cite examples based on real-world security flaws in common protocols representing different classes of protocol complexity. We also introduce a formalization of an exploit development technique, the parse tree differential attack, made possible by our conception of the role of formal grammars in security. These insights make possible future advances in software auditing techniques applicable to static and dynamic …

Over the last decade, small noncoding RNA molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in the expression and function of eukaryotic genomes. It has been suggested that viral infections and neurological disease outcome may also be shaped by the influence of small RNAs. This has prompted us to suggest that HIV infection alters the endogenous miRNA expression patterns, thereby contributing to neuronal deregulation and AIDS dementia. Therefore, using primary cultures and neuronal cell lines, we examined the impact of a viral protein (HIV-1 Tat) on the expression of miRNAs due to its characteristic features such as release …
