The Idea Of The Public Library In The United States: Why Is It Important?, Ruth Bernstein Apr 2011

The Idea Of The Public Library In The United States: Why Is It Important?, Ruth Bernstein

Pitzer Senior Theses

In a 1954 Library Science textbook author Ernestine Rose asked her readers to ponder whether the public library is either “unique and indispensable“ or “incidental and pleasant—the frills on our civic costume”. Over sixty-five years later these opposite constructs are still valid to frame my thesis with the questions, What is important about a library, What does it mean and to whom does it matter?

Enduring Impact: The Crisis Fetish In Post-9/11 American Television, Christine Muller Apr 2011

Enduring Impact: The Crisis Fetish In Post-9/11 American Television, Christine Muller

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Commonly, those who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event – whether that event involves a near-fatal car accident or the live broadcast of the September 11, 2001 hijackings – have responded, “The world is different now. It’s like a whole new place, and things will never be the same.” These entirely disparate events provoke a similar reaction because of the nature of trauma itself. As psychologist Ronnie Janoff-Bulman and others have argued, trauma shatters the most fundamental assumptions that govern functional daily living, leaving survivors and witnesses questioning what they really can know about and do in this world. …

Gimme Shelter, Robert Leckey Apr 2011

Gimme Shelter, Robert Leckey

Dalhousie Law Journal

Highlighting the family home's significance as shelter this paper challenges the prevailing view of the demands of the equality guarantee in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms regarding unmarried cohabitants. In Nova Scotia (Attorney General) v. Walsh, the Supreme Court of Canada rejected the claim that it was discriminatory to restrict rules dividing matrimonial property to married couples. By contrast, on many views it is discriminatory to exclude cohabitants from a support obligation. Scholars and judges assume that Walsh upholds all statutory rules regarding married spouses and their property, including measures protecting the family home as shelter But Walsh …

Marginal Ridge Thickness (Mrt) Of Maxillary Incisors, Mark Foster Apr 2011

Marginal Ridge Thickness (Mrt) Of Maxillary Incisors, Mark Foster

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Aim: To determine the marginal ridge thickness (MRT) of maxillary incisors in orthodontic patients and the possible correlation between MRT and Bolton Index.

Methods: 120 pre<–>orthodontic treatment dental casts were collected, following the inclusion criteria: Quality pretreatment upper and lower casts, age 10<–>16, full permanent dentition (except 2nd and 3rd molars), no obvious wear/attrition/abrasion, no proximal restorations or crowns. For each cast, the mesio (M<–>D)distal (M<–>D) widths of the upper and lower teeth from left 1st molar to right 1st molar were measured to calculate Bolton Index. The MRTs of the maxillary incisors were measured in …

Late-Pleistocene And Holocene Obsidian Transfer In The Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Matthew C. Leavesley, Caroline Read Apr 2011

Late-Pleistocene And Holocene Obsidian Transfer In The Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Matthew C. Leavesley, Caroline Read

Pacific Studies

Obsidian analysis allows for archaeologists to investigate notions of trade and exchange over vast areas of land and sea. Here we report the results of Particle Induced X-ray Emission-Particle Induced Gamma-Ray Emission analysis undertaken on obsidian excavated from Buang Merabak, a Pleistocene cave site in central New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. Although the dataset is relatively small, it provides new information reflecting cultural connectivity as early as 20,000 (uncalib) bp. Also, it provides a valuable opportunity to re-evaluate some pre-existing models of trade and exchange. The data support the notion that there may have been more than one trade/exchange network …

Monetization And Tradition: Cash And Conciliation In Contemporary Samoa, Cluny Macpherson, LaʻAvasa Macpherson

Pacific Studies

This article explores the evolving role of cash in Samoan ceremonial traditions, where it is increasingly used alongside or in place of traditional symbolic goods. While the integration of cash into ceremonies has been relatively seamless, its use in more culturally sensitive rituals has proven problematic. The paper examines how these changes challenge the traditional social variables of contemporary Samoa.

Assessing The Regulation Of Temporary Foreign Workers In Canada, Sarah Marsden Apr 2011

Assessing The Regulation Of Temporary Foreign Workers In Canada, Sarah Marsden

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There has been an increase in the number of incoming temporary migrant workers to Canada over the past decade. In this article, I critically assess recent changes in the law governing temporary migration to Canada by using theoretical tools from the fields of sociology, geography, and legal geography. A multidisciplinary framework to understand Canada's labour migration policies is provided. Within the socio-historical context of migrant labour regulation in Canada, I argue that political and regulatory developments function to further entrench segregation and exclusion of foreign workers by maintaining a subclass of flexible labour. Specifically, I show that Canada's current temporary …

The Effect Of Teachers' Cultural Proficiency Training On Sixth Grade Students' Reading Achievement, Diane Wells-Rivers Apr 2011

The Effect Of Teachers' Cultural Proficiency Training On Sixth Grade Students' Reading Achievement, Diane Wells-Rivers

Student Work

This study evaluated the overall reading achievement of African American (n = 42) and White (n = 21) sixth grade students in an urban Midwestern school, after their teachers‘ engaged in culturally proficiency training provided by The Minnesota Humanities Center. Data for students in the study was collected for comprehension levels or acuity (CTB/McGraw-Hill, 2010), text gradient levels (Fountas & Pinnell, 2008), and oral fluency levels (Berglund & Johns, 2006; Fountas & Pinnell, 2008) during year two of their teachers‘ participation in the training.

Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza Apr 2011

Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza

Dissertations (1934 -)

Christian theologians regularly assume a binary model of human sex differentiation based on the creation narratives found in Genesis. Recent work in theological anthropology has grounded theological concepts such as the social view of the image of God, human personhood, and human relationality on the creation of humans as male and female in heterosexual marital relation. While these anthropologies have merit--particularly in correcting older versions of the imago Dei which privileged the male-- they are inadequate for addressing the phenomena of intersex.

Intersex is a broad term used for persons whose bodies display some physical characteristics of both sexes--historically labeled …

The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost!' Post-9/11 Revengeful Narratives In Lorrie Moore’S A Gate At The Stairs, Pamela Mansutti Apr 2011

The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost!' Post-9/11 Revengeful Narratives In Lorrie Moore’S A Gate At The Stairs, Pamela Mansutti

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In her last novel A Gate at the Stairs (2009), Lorrie Moore follows a twenty-year-old college student’s journey of self-discovery and emancipation as she moves to a medium-sized university town in the Midwest. The young girl, Tassie Keltjin, longs for elaborate and cosmopolitan experiences but meets crudity and shallowness as she crosses the particular chronotope of the story, the algid post-9/11 Midwestern America. Her geographical and existential transition occurs at the turn of 2001 and throughout 2002, when the aftermath of 9/11 begins to penetrate everyone’s ordinary existence in its many degrees and forms of gravity. Interestingly, A Gate at …

The Assumption Of All Humanity In Saint Hilary Of Poitiers' Tractatus Super Psalmos, Ellen Scully Apr 2011

The Assumption Of All Humanity In Saint Hilary Of Poitiers' Tractatus Super Psalmos, Ellen Scully

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, I focus on the soteriological understanding of the fourth-century theologian Hilary of Poitiers as manifested in his underappreciated Tractatus super Psalmos. Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways.

First, I demonstrate that Hilary's teaching concerning Christ's assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ's assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic …
