The Tourists And The Toured: Identity In Greenmarket Square, Sophia Perlman Apr 2011

The Tourists And The Toured: Identity In Greenmarket Square, Sophia Perlman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project explores the intersection between vendors and tourists in Greenmarket Square, a popular arts and crafts market in Cape Town. I examine the way in which the identities of the vendors and tourists are co-constructed in this market setting. I focus, in particular, on how vendors articulate and negotiate their identity through the tourist gaze. In addition, I consider the role of the objects in the co-construction of the tourists and toured identities. My findings are based on data gathered through participant observation with vendors, interviews with vendors and tourists, and content analysis of objects and tourist guidebooks. My …

Living For Two: Experiencing Alzheimer’S Disease Through The Caregiver, Jacob Kramer Apr 2011

Living For Two: Experiencing Alzheimer’S Disease Through The Caregiver, Jacob Kramer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This investigation focuses on the effects of Alzheimer‟s disease beyond the consequences it implicates for the patient. It must be recognized that this is a disease whose repercussions affect the family caregiver of the diseased with the same strength that it disturbs the principal carrier. The sporadic characteristics of Alzheimer‟s disease, externalized through mood swings, memory loss, the eventual loss of bodily functions, and, among other symptoms, the inability to communicate, create a category of instability and volatility experienced solely by the primary caregiver. This inconsistency that the primary family caregiver comes to know not only disturbs the patient-caregiver relationship, …

No Me Conoces: Integración Social De Refugiados Colombianos En Quito, Anna Luberoff

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Claiming Manaslu: The Agency Of A Rural Community In Nepal’S Developing Mountain Tourism Industry, Sierra Gladfelter Apr 2011

Claiming Manaslu: The Agency Of A Rural Community In Nepal’S Developing Mountain Tourism Industry, Sierra Gladfelter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Due to the commoditization of Everest‟s summit and road construction around Annapurna, adventure tourists drawn to Nepal for wilderness and „authentic‟ village experiences are increasingly seeking more remote destinations like the Manaslu Circuit, which only opened to trekkers in 1991. The trekkers and mountaineers who travel such routes play a crucial role in ushering in the development of remote regions and reshaping the face of previously isolated villages. As agencies, nonprofits and community organizations design and market these alternative treks with the noble goal of alleviating poverty in rural Nepal, there is often a disconnect between those promoting the destination …

The Identity Of The Chinese In Belgrade: A National Question, Wan (Sabrina) Tsai Apr 2011

The Identity Of The Chinese In Belgrade: A National Question, Wan (Sabrina) Tsai

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Chinese community is an unknown population to the general Serbian society. Since most of the Chinese function within their own established spaces, it is difficult for outsiders to fully understand the dynamics of Chinese identity. This study aims to explore the layers of identity formation in the Chinese transmigrant community in Belgrade, Serbia. By taken into account different daily-life factors that impact identity formation, this study examines the extent to which Chinese identities are influenced by living and working in Serbia.

The methods used in this study are four semi-structured interviews and thirty-two informal conversations with the Chinese in …

Love For Sale: How Working Conditions Influence The Dramaturgical Presentation Of Self For Sex Workers In Amsterdam, Elizabeth Scheib

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research investigates how working conditions affect the dramaturgical presentation of self for sex workers in Amsterdam. Seven participants were interviewed in person; three were female window sex workers and four were male brothel sex workers. The theoretical perspective was inspired by sociologists Erving Goffman and Arlie Hochschild. The findings were discussed through the subcategories on the preparation for work/use of costume and props, feelings on competition and co-workers, feelings on work and success, the emotional labour of client interaction, and feelings on discrimination or other negative aspects of the job. This research concludes that emotional labour of client interactions …

Cost Of The Connoisseur’S Cup: Power Dynamics In A Tea Factory’S Conversion To Organic Production, Karen Gardner

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper analyzes the identity of the tea factory as relating to small-holder tea farmers in eastern Nepal as well as the effects of a tea factory’s conversion to organic production on the bargaining power of tea farmers. This research uses both primary and secondary sources, including but not limited to interviews with tea farmers in the Sundarpani area of the Ilam district of eastern Nepal as well as interviews with staff members of Gorkha Tea Estate in the same area. The research findings indicate that though tea factories in the eastern hill region of Nepal act as efficient, expert …

Endangered Heritage And Emergent Ogogo: A Case Study Of The “Ulwazi Programme”, Emily Kwong

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Kwesukesukela, or “a long time ago,” there was a beautiful woman who lived by the ocean with her husband and two small children. The woman’s name was Mazanendaba. Although she lived a life full of happiness, Mazanendaba came to realize with time that something important was missing: there were no stories. No stories for mothers and grandmothers to tell their children. No stories to inspire joy and ease sorrow. No stories to enrich the mind and nurture the soul. Determined to find stories in a world without any, Mazanendaba left her beloved home in search of a new story to …

Fight Or Flight: The Situation Of The Young And Jobless In Morocco, Anduriña Espinoza Apr 2011

Fight Or Flight: The Situation Of The Young And Jobless In Morocco, Anduriña Espinoza

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the context of the Arab Spring, Morocco faces some of the biggest anti-government protests in recent history, many of which are motivated at least in part by the poor and persistent employment problem. Bearing in mind the staggeringly high numbers of unemployed youth in a country that is also one of the biggest senders of migrants to Europe and North America, I have based my study on the duality of choice Moroccans face. When confronted with deteriorating quality in a given product, as economist Albert O. Hirschman has articulated in his theory on exit, voice, and loyalty, people can …

Music, Anthropology, And The Senses: Cognition For Social Change, Marcia Mikulak Apr 2011

Music, Anthropology, And The Senses: Cognition For Social Change, Marcia Mikulak

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Both anthropology and music embrace the method of participant observation: performance and observation of self and others. As a classical musician, I bring a musical heritage in both classical and experimental music performance, and as a cultural anthropologist my training in ethnology allows me to couple musical sensibilities with participant observation. This paper explores three venues of human expression: experimental musical improvisation, musical performance with and for street and working youth in Brazil, and anthropological fieldwork. I argue that the combination of musical expression and participant observation provide unique opportunities to share the universality of lived experiences, while augmenting complex …

Singing From The Village, Bonnie Lynn Bost Apr 2011

Singing From The Village, Bonnie Lynn Bost

Masters Theses

Singing from the Village brings to light some basic problems in education for a village school near Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, South India. While problems of poverty, social strife, possible over use of rote learning, lack of critical and creative thinking are discussed, the focus of this study is the problem of how the children hear western melodies differently because of the musical vocabulary their ears and brains have become accustomed to in their village. Singing from the Village attempts to examine village songs and compare them to a western children's song, Praise Him, Praise Him sung each day at the …

The Global Dimension Of The Current Economic Crisis And The Benefits Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Golbert Apr 2011

The Global Dimension Of The Current Economic Crisis And The Benefits Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Golbert

Nevada Law Journal

The Conference on the Economic Crisis and Conflict Resolution, sponsored by the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law, concerned the application of mediation and other forms of cost-effective dispute resolution to specific dimensions of the domestic economic crisis—namely foreclosure and bankruptcy. Among other relevant themes, the conference also examined cost-effective dispute resolution in community mediation, online technology, and dispute-wise organizations. An economic downturn, however, does not respect borders. The current economic crisis is no exception. Thus, I turn our attention to the global dimension of the current economic …

Beggars Can't Be Choosers Or The Refugee As A Moral Agent?, Pamela Cartier Allen Apr 2011

Beggars Can't Be Choosers Or The Refugee As A Moral Agent?, Pamela Cartier Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project considers the ways in which the dominant discourse on refugees might reinforce the negative impacts or limit the positive impacts of aid. Care for refugees is a difficult task that takes place in a discourse that begins with numerical calculi, a language that expresses ambivalence about our obligations for this category of persons, fear of their collective identity, and a deep ceded notion of refugees as an object of concern, a worthy cause, a growing problem, and a burden that must be shared.

What we choose to do for and about refugees emerge from our present awareness (knowledge) …

The Influences Of Acculturation, Marianismo And Ethnic Identity On Sexual Activity Among Latina Adolescents, Keyona M. Jarrett

Dissertations (1934 -)

This mixed methods study examined the influences of acculturation (e.g., assimilation and enculturation), marianismo, and ethnic identity on the sexual behaviors and attitudes of Latina adolescents. In the quantitative portion of the study, 204 Latina adolescents completed measures regarding acculturation, gender roles, ethnic identity, and sexual behaviors. In the qualitative portion of the study, three focus groups were conducted (with a total of 10 participants) in which Latina youth were asked questions regarding their ethnic group membership and its influence on their attitudes about sex.

The results of the quantitative portion of the study revealed that ethnic affirmation was negatively …

Renewing A Catholic Theology Of Marriage Through A Common Way Of Life: Consonance With Vowed Religious Life-In-Community, Kent Lasnoski Apr 2011

Renewing A Catholic Theology Of Marriage Through A Common Way Of Life: Consonance With Vowed Religious Life-In-Community, Kent Lasnoski

Dissertations (1934 -)

Beginning with Vatican II's call for constant renewal, in light of the council's universal call to holiness, I analyze and critique modern theologies of Christian marriage, especially those identifying marriage as a relationship or as practice. Herein, need emerges for a new, ecclesial, trinitarian, and christological paradigm to identify purposes, ends, and goods of Christian marriage. The dissertation's body develops the foundation and framework of this new paradigm: a Common Way in Christ. I find this paradigm by putting marriage in dialogue with an ecclesial practice already the subject of rich trinitarian, christological, ecclesial theological development: consecrated religious life.

Chapter …

"Poor Maggot-Sack That I Am": The Human Body In The Theology Of Martin Luther, Charles Lloyd Cortright

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation represents research into the writings of Martin Luther [1483-1546] reflecting his understanding of the human body in his theology. Chapter one reviews the history of the body in the theology of the western Christian church, 300- 1500. Chapters two through five examine Luther's thinking about various <“>body topics,<”> such as the body as the good creation of God; sexuality and procreation; and the body in illness, death, and resurrection. Chapter six presents conclusions.

Luther's thinking is examined on the basis of consultation of the Weimarer Ausgabe and the <“>American Edition<”> of Luther's works. Special attention is given to …

The Way To God Or God's Way To Us: The Theologies Of Edward Farley And James Mcclendon In Critical Dialogue, Thomas W. Harrington Apr 2011

The Way To God Or God's Way To Us: The Theologies Of Edward Farley And James Mcclendon In Critical Dialogue, Thomas W. Harrington

Dissertations (1934 -)

A lively theological debate in recent decades has been the dispute over theological method between "revisionist" and "narrativist" theologians. To explore and evaluate this debate I consider the work of "revisionist" theologian Edward Farley and of "narrativist" theologian James William McClendon, Jr. Farley's method calls, first, for an attempt to uncover faith realities that can be directly perceived, such as the faith community's efforts to remove ethnic boundaries, and, second, for an endeavor to examine how such realities indirectly demonstrate the existence of additional faith realities, such as the character of God. In contrast, McClendon's method calls for an attempt …

Becoming Culturally Competent: Clinical Service Learning In Physician Assistant Education, Pinna Rea Katz Apr 2011

Becoming Culturally Competent: Clinical Service Learning In Physician Assistant Education, Pinna Rea Katz

Dissertations (1934 -)

Background: Even though the need for culturally accessible, acceptable, and appropriate medical care for diverse populations is well established, there is a lack of research on how cultural competencies are developed in physician assistant education. There are no studies that address the intersections among cultural, clinical, and psychosocial competencies from the viewpoint of the physician assistant student. Although accreditation standards for physician assistant educational programs provide general guidelines for inclusion of cultural competency in the curriculum, core competencies in physician assistant education focus primarily on biomedical content rather than address cultural competencies. Because experiential education, such as service learning, offers …

The Role Of Supervisor-Supervisee Cultural Differences, Supervisor Multicultural Competence, And The Supervisory Working Alliance In Supervision Outcomes: A Moderated Mediation Model, Stephanie A. Crockett Apr 2011

The Role Of Supervisor-Supervisee Cultural Differences, Supervisor Multicultural Competence, And The Supervisory Working Alliance In Supervision Outcomes: A Moderated Mediation Model, Stephanie A. Crockett

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

As the United States population grows more diverse, many counseling professionals have called for attention to the cultural issues present in clinical supervision. Existing research suggests that the supervisor's level of multicultural competence and the strength of the supervisory working alliance may affect the relationship between supervisor-supervisee cultural differences on supervision outcomes. Accordingly, the study sought to address how cultural differences between the supervisor and supervisee, supervisor multicultural competence, and the supervisory working alliance impact supervisee counseling self-efficacy and satisfaction with supervision.

The study examined the plausibility of a moderated mediation model, derived from the literature, using a sample of …

The New Old Legal Realsim, Tracey E. George, Mitu Gulati, Ann C. Mcginley

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Judges produce opinions for numerous purposes. A judicial opinion decides a case and informs the parties whether they won or lost. But in a common law system, the most important purpose of the opinion, particularly the appellate opinion, is to educate prospective litigants, lawyers, and lower court judges about the law: what it is and how it applies to a specific set of facts. Without this purpose, courts could more quickly and efficiently issue one-sentence rulings rather than set forth reasons. By issuing opinions, courts give actors a means of evaluating whether their actions are within the bounds of law. …

White And Everything Else: Promotion The 1924 Virginia Racial Integrity Act, J. Casey Gilliam Apr 2011

White And Everything Else: Promotion The 1924 Virginia Racial Integrity Act, J. Casey Gilliam

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

During the early twentieth century, a movement influenced by the tenets of Social Darwinism took root in the United States. Members of the movement used its principles to “improve the American race” through selective breeding. The leaders of the movement adopted the name eugenics and the participants worked at strengthening genetics in two major ways: the sterilization of persons with so-called genetic defects and an effort to eliminate miscegenation. The Commonwealth of Virginia pursued both aspects of eugenics with great fervor. Under the leadership of Dr. Walter Ashby Plecker, Virginia took a radical stance against racial amalgamation through legislation defining …
