Ceramic Resource Selection And Social Violence In The Gallina Area Of The American Southwest, Connie Irene Constan Jul 2011

Ceramic Resource Selection And Social Violence In The Gallina Area Of The American Southwest, Connie Irene Constan

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines the relationship between social violence and ceramic resource procurement. Do people in middle-range societies alter resource use in response to conflict? Specifically, does social strife influence the distance to which potters in middle-range societies will travel to collect ceramic resources? Distance and quality are primary elements in clay selection. Clay is heavy, so for many potters distance is the determining factor in clay selection (Arnold 1985, 2000). Arnold (1985, 2000) estimated procurement thresholds using worldwide ethnographic data from 111 traditional societies. He found that for both clays and tempers, people prefer to travel only one kilometer, but …

The Evolutionary Ecology Of Human Infancy, Amanda Veile Jul 2011

The Evolutionary Ecology Of Human Infancy, Amanda Veile

Anthropology ETDs

Infancy is a time of profound energetic trade-offs, and in many South American native groups, infant growth is stunted and mortality by infectious disease is high. The goal of this dissertation was to explore the nature of human infancy from a life history theoretical perspective. Specifically, I investigated infant growth, feeding patterns, and thymic development in two South American native populations, the Tsimane of Bolivia and the Pumé of Venezuela. This broad goal is addressed through four specific goals: 1) to model the weaning transition using behavioral data collected in Tsimane communities where infants experience varying mortality rates, 2) to …

Constructing The "At-Risk" Student In Education: A Sociopolitical Analysis From 1960-2009, Rebecca Beals Jul 2011

Constructing The "At-Risk" Student In Education: A Sociopolitical Analysis From 1960-2009, Rebecca Beals

Sociology ETDs

In this thesis, I examine the changing conceptualization of what is called the at-risk' or disadvantaged student from 1960-2009. Using components of theory on education as an institution, the construction of knowledge, and racial formation theory, I specifically argue that research reviews and federal policy serve as sites where these core concepts in educational discourse and policy continually go through a process of rearticulation and legitimation. I use one journal, the Review of Educational Research, to examine this relationship over 50 years, from 1960-2009. I use a quantitative content analysis of research abstracts to explore 1.) how the concept of …

Philosophy And Theology: Notes On Double Effect Reasoning, Christopher Kaczor Jul 2011

Philosophy And Theology: Notes On Double Effect Reasoning, Christopher Kaczor

Philosophy Faculty Works

The article discusses the conditions to which an action with two effects or double-effect, one good and the other evil, can be considered ethically permissible. It cites hypothetical cases describing the conditions which include that the action itself, its object is not intrinsically evil; the evil effect is not a means to the good effect; the evil effect is not intended as an end and there is a morally serious reason justifying allowing the evil effect.

Meaning Of Hijab According To Urban Egyptian And Yemeni Muslim Women, Kenneth E. Jackson Jul 2011

Meaning Of Hijab According To Urban Egyptian And Yemeni Muslim Women, Kenneth E. Jackson

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Meanings of hijab held by urban Egyptian and Yemeni Muslim women were the focus of this study. In addition to the meanings held of hijab, the study also explored the relationships between demographic variables and perceptions of hijab. Three null hypotheses led the analyses pertaining to the differences between Egyptian and Yemeni respondents in their perceptions of hijab, demographic differences between those that wore a hijab and those that wore a niqab, and the demographic differences between those that wore a hijab and those that did not wear a hijab. Data analysis was based on the …

Outcomes Assessment Of Role-Play Scenarios For Teaching Responsible Conduct Of Research, Stephanie N. Seiler, Bradley J. Brummel, Kerri L. Anderson, Kyoung Jin Kim, Serena G. Wee, C. K. Gunsalus, Michael C. Loui Jul 2011

Outcomes Assessment Of Role-Play Scenarios For Teaching Responsible Conduct Of Research, Stephanie N. Seiler, Bradley J. Brummel, Kerri L. Anderson, Kyoung Jin Kim, Serena G. Wee, C. K. Gunsalus, Michael C. Loui

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We describe the summative assessment of role-play scenarios that we previously developed to teach central topics in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) to graduate students in science and engineering. Interviews with role-play participants, with participants in a case discussion training session, and with untrained students suggested that role-playing might promote a deeper appreciation of RCR by shifting the focus away from wanting to simply “know the rules.“ We also present the results of a think-aloud case analysis study and describe the development of a behaviorally-anchored rating scale (BARS) to assess participants' case analysis performance.

Kneejerks And Fresh Starts: A History Of Speakers And Authors Of Protibaad, Atreyee Majumder Jul 2011

Kneejerks And Fresh Starts: A History Of Speakers And Authors Of Protibaad, Atreyee Majumder

Socio-Legal Review

I hadn't seen a michheel in close to a decade. Until yesterday. Middle-aged Writers' Buildings officials, of Congress leanings, protested the attacks on Congress leaders in Burdwan saying that it was possible due to police apathy and negligence. There were hardly any banners, mostl slogans. Even as some tyres are deflated and buses burnt down in the heart of South Calcutta. The Congress is back with a bang, say the newspapers. These attacks have reinvigorated our workers. A Congress leader is quoted. A feeble identity that was getting increasingly engulfed by the grassroot diva of the state is now fed …

Internet As Digital Practice: Examining Differences In African American Internet Usage, Roderick Graham, Danielle Taana Smith Jul 2011

Internet As Digital Practice: Examining Differences In African American Internet Usage, Roderick Graham, Danielle Taana Smith

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study assesses differences within the African American population with respect to internet activity. Using survey data, we find wide variations within the population. While some segments of African Americans are indeed less likely to perform certain activities on the internet, we note that certain segments of the African American population are reporting more internet activity than other racial groups. These ‘haves’ score high not just in comparison to their African American peers, but to the US American population as a whole. We suggest a move away from the digital divide/digital inequality models and a move towards thinking of greater …

Homing Desire, Cultural Citizenship, And Diasporic Imaginings, Anh Hua Jul 2011

Homing Desire, Cultural Citizenship, And Diasporic Imaginings, Anh Hua

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines the relationship between homing desire, cultural citizenship and diaspora communities. I begin by examining how citizenship is a deeply gendered concept. From there, I will explore how citizenship practices, although promising enfranchisement and equality, sometimes socially exclude certain gendered and racialized individuals and communities as inauthentic citizens, non-citizens, or denizens. Finally, I will analyze the concept of cultural citizenship and how it is being used in various diaspora communities as ways to imagine multiple modes of belonging within and beyond the coherence of national boundaries. I argue that to fully comprehend the lived experience of migratory and …

Women And Post-Conflict Society In Sierra Leone, Hazel M. Mcferson Jul 2011

Women And Post-Conflict Society In Sierra Leone, Hazel M. Mcferson

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender inequality in Sierra Leone, after colonialism among the worst in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been heightened further by the civil war of 1992-2002--which was related in part to the struggle for control of “blood diamonds” but also to long-standing social and regional disparities, and to collapse of formal institutions and widespread corruption. Sierra Leonean women are today among the most marginalized in the world, socially, economically and politically. However, there are differences among three groups: the better educated, comparatively richer “Krios” (descendants of the original freed slaves); relatively enlightened tribes; and the more traditional patriarchal tribes. The main route to …

Bonobos Fall Within The Genomic Variation Of Chimpanzees, Anne Fischer, Kay Prüfer, Jeffrey M. Good, Michel Halbwax, Victor Wiebe, Claudine André, Rebeca Atencia, Lawrence Mugisha, Susan E. Ptak, Svante Pääbo Jul 2011

Bonobos Fall Within The Genomic Variation Of Chimpanzees, Anne Fischer, Kay Prüfer, Jeffrey M. Good, Michel Halbwax, Victor Wiebe, Claudine André, Rebeca Atencia, Lawrence Mugisha, Susan E. Ptak, Svante Pääbo

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

To gain insight into the patterns of genetic variation and evolutionary relationships within and between bonobos and chimpanzees, we sequenced 150,000 base pairs of nuclear DNA divided among 15 autosomal regions as well as the complete mitochondrial genomes from 20 bonobos and 58 chimpanzees. Except for western chimpanzees, we found poor genetic separation of chimpanzees based on sample locality. In contrast, bonobos consistently cluster together but fall as a group within the variation of chimpanzees for many of the regions. Thus, while chimpanzees retain genomic variation that predates bonobo-chimpanzee speciation, extensive lineage sorting has occurred within bonobos such that much …

Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust Jul 2011

Early Childhood Bilingualism Leads To Advances In Executive Attention: Dissociating Culture And Language, Sujin Yang, Hwajin Yang, Barbara Lust

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study investigated whether early especially efficient utilization of executive functioning in young bilinguals would transcend potential cultural benefits. To dissociate potential cultural effects from bilingualism, four-year-old U.S. Korean-English bilingual children were compared to three monolingual groups – English and Korean monolinguals in the U.S.A. and another Korean monolingual group, in Korea. Overall, bilinguals were most accurate and fastest among all groups. The bilingual advantage was stronger than that of culture in the speed of attention processing, inverse processing efficiency independent of possible speed-accuracy trade-offs, and the network of executive control for conflict resolution. A culture advantage favoring Korean monolinguals …

Interviewing Older People; Relationships In Qualitative Research, Linda Robertson, Beatrica Hale Jul 2011

Interviewing Older People; Relationships In Qualitative Research, Linda Robertson, Beatrica Hale

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Health practitioners who have already undertaken a considerable amount of interviewing would consider themselves as experienced interviewers, but there are questions and issues arising from research interviews which are different from assessment and interventionist interviews. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of the health professional researcher in qualitative research with older people and to make recommendations for preparatory interviewing in methodology courses. Method: A descriptive approach was used and semi-structured interviews with a sample size of eleven New Zealand health professionals/researchers. Results: A significant theme emerging was relationships. This was further divided into three categories: establishing …

Social Trust In Contemporary Rural China: Its Sources And Impacts On Public Goods Provision, Narisong Huhe Jul 2011

Social Trust In Contemporary Rural China: Its Sources And Impacts On Public Goods Provision, Narisong Huhe

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Social trust, as an essential element of political culture, is assumed to strongly affect the effectiveness of political institution. However, such studies in non-democratic settings are scarce, and even scarcer in the Chinese context. This dissertation, using data drawn from an original survey in rural China, examines the extent, sociopolitical origins, and political consequences of social trust in China. The results suggest that China has a unique pattern of social trust owing to its dual Confucian and Communist heritages. While trusts in relatives, neighbors, kinsman, and other villagers (i.e., particularized trust) are extensive, trust in strangers (generalized trust) is scarce. …

The Message Or The Messenger: The Effects Of Political Attitudes And Source On Perceptions Of Media Bias, Emily E. Eisenhart Jul 2011

The Message Or The Messenger: The Effects Of Political Attitudes And Source On Perceptions Of Media Bias, Emily E. Eisenhart

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

As the televised news media market becomes increasingly diversified, the evidence available suggests that news media audiences are more fragmented than ever, audiences trust the media less and less, and that news consumers tend to seek outlets that they believe share their political attitudes and worldview (Knobloch-Westerwick & Meng, 2009, Tsfati & Capella 2003, Niven 2002, Stalder, 2009, Pew Center, 2009). Researchers Vallone, Ross, and Lepper (1985) were some of the first to describe empirically an observation they call the “hostile media phenomenon.” This phenomenon draws from social judgment theory and assumes that “individuals evaluate the legitimacy of an object …

The Ontogeny Of Escape Responses And Locomotor Performance In Sceloporus Woodi, Reed B. Stiller Jul 2011

The Ontogeny Of Escape Responses And Locomotor Performance In Sceloporus Woodi, Reed B. Stiller

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Predator prey interactions have the potential to shape patterns of natural selection. For prey, avoiding detection by predators is of primary importance; however prey species risk detection by movement. Other than crypsis, prey species also use secondary defenses when detected by a predator. The most common secondary defense is flight. Flight initiation distance describes the distance between a prey item and a predator where the benefits of fleeing outweigh the benefits of remaining stationary. There are many factors that influence flight initiation distance including ontogenetic stage, ability to escape, and the degree of crypsis. Of these, the ontogenetic effects on …
