Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky Jun 2011

Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

This paper examines operational efficiency from a biblical theology perspective. The paper describes operational efficiency in contemporary terms and considers six categories of constraints on efficiency. In pursuing its purpose the paper reviews six relevant biblical themes including: God‘s character, creation, covenant, shalom, blessing, and fruitfulness. Five biblical values and virtues describe how efficiency is to be achieved: truth, wisdom, prudence, usefulness, and stewardship. The biblical theme of agricultural yield provides an illustration of the instrumental virtues and values by which workers achieve and measure efficiency.

Understory Bird Communities In Amazonian Rainforest Fragments: Species Turnover Through 25 Years Post-Isolation In Recovering Landscapes, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson, Richard O. Bierregaard, Thomas E. Lovejoy Jun 2011

Understory Bird Communities In Amazonian Rainforest Fragments: Species Turnover Through 25 Years Post-Isolation In Recovering Landscapes, Philip C. Stouffer, Erik I. Johnson, Richard O. Bierregaard, Thomas E. Lovejoy

Faculty Publications

Inferences about species loss following habitat conversion are typically drawn from short-term surveys, which cannot reconstruct long-term temporal dynamics of extinction and colonization. A long-term view can be critical, however, to determine the stability of communities within fragments. Likewise, landscape dynamics must be considered, as second growth structure and overall forest cover contribute to processes in fragments. Here we examine bird communities in 11 Amazonian rainforest fragments of 1-100 ha, beginning before the fragments were isolated in the 1980s, and continuing through 2007. Using a method that accounts for imperfect detection, we estimated extinction and colonization based on standardized mist-net …

The Inside-Out Classroom: A Win-Win Strategy For Teaching With Technology, Daniel J. Waldorf, Lizabeth Schlemer

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

As costs of higher education soar and many universities face uncertain funding models, institutional pressures have increased to improve instructor efficiency. At the same time, U.S. industry leaders and leading educators have called for improvements in engineering education based on more interactive, hands-on student learning experiences. Although many efforts have been made to take advantage of technology to either improve student learning or to maintain student learning while increasing instructor efficiency, few approaches have been shown to improve both learning and efficiency. A teaching method is proposed to improve student learning and increase student satisfaction while also addressing the instructors’ …

The 2009 Samoa And 2010 Chile Tsunamis As Observed In The Ionosphere Using Gps Total Electron Content, David A. Galvan, Attila Komjathy, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., Anthony J. Mannucci

Publications

Ground‐based Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) show variations consistent with atmospheric internal gravity waves caused by ocean tsunamis following two recent seismic events: the Samoa earthquake of 29 September 2009 and the Chile earthquake of 27 February 2010. Both earthquakes produced ocean tsunamis that were destructive to coastal communities near the epicenters, and both were observed in tidal gauge and buoy measurements throughout the Pacific Ocean. We observe fluctuations in TEC correlated in time, space, and wave properties with these tsunamis using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Global Ionospheric Mapping software. These TEC measurements were …

The use of stable nitrogen isotope data in ecological and physiological studies is based in the assumption that nitrogen fractionates predictably during metabolism, leading to a broadly conserved pattern whereby consumers are isotopically enriched with respect to their diets. The application of stable isotope data to such studies is limited is by our understanding of the factors in that cause variability in the Δ15N values of consumers. In particular, parasites and fluid-feeders have been shown to demonstrate isotopic depletion with respect to their food sources. One factor that has been suggested to influence the Δ15N values seen in fluid-feeding consumers …

Identification Of The Allosteric Regulatory Site Of Insulysin, Nicholas Noinaj, Sonia K. Bhasin, Eun Suk Song, Kirsten E. Scoggin, Maria A. Juliano, Luiz Juliano, Louis B. Hersh, David W. Rodgers

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Insulin degrading enzyme (IDE) is responsible for the metabolism of insulin and plays a role in clearance of the Aβ peptide associated with Alzheimer's disease. Unlike most proteolytic enzymes, IDE, which consists of four structurally related domains and exists primarily as a dimer, exhibits allosteric kinetics, being activated by both small substrate peptides and polyphosphates such as ATP.

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The crystal structure of a catalytically compromised mutant of IDE has electron density for peptide ligands bound at the active site in domain 1 and a distal site in domain 2. Mutating residues in the distal site eliminates allosteric …

Death Becomes Her: Theodicy In Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Jack K. Mallard Jun 2011

Death Becomes Her: Theodicy In Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Jack K. Mallard

Theses and Dissertations

A study of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, particularly "The Sound of Her Wings" and "The Kindly Ones: Part 13," demonstrates its theological richness. The Sandman's ability to participate in theodicy becomes clear by framing that study within a framework provided by Ernest Becker's ideas about the terror of death and Karen Armstrong's observations of the historical utility of negative theology and compassion. The analysis of the formal characteristics of The Sandman shows the range of aesthetic possibility inherent in the comics form. Lastly, the study makes apparent the continued readerly desire for engagement with questions about God, transcendence, …

Rendering Realistic Cloud Effects For Computer Generated Films, Cory A. Reimschussel Jun 2011

Rendering Realistic Cloud Effects For Computer Generated Films, Cory A. Reimschussel

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses the problem of rendering clouds. The task of rendering clouds is important to film and video game directors who want to use clouds to further the story or create a specific atmosphere for the audience. While there has been significant progress in this area, other solutions to this problem are inadequate because they focus on speed instead of accuracy, or focus only on a few specific properties of rendered clouds while ignoring others. Another common shortcoming with other methods is that they are not integrated into existing rendering pipelines. We propose a solution to this problem based …
