Generating Tacit Knowledge Through Motion: A Vision On The Matter Of Space, Liselotte Vroman, Thierry Lagrange, Luiz Naveda Jun 2011

Generating Tacit Knowledge Through Motion: A Vision On The Matter Of Space, Liselotte Vroman, Thierry Lagrange, Luiz Naveda

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper aims to observe and bring forth the embodied experience of space, while an individual interacts through moving. This research project is about how architecture can be conceived, setting out from the embodied experience of space. There is main focus on dance, because of the level of spatial awareness and expression of the movements. The boundaries of architecture are explored by means of empirical methods. The experienced space is based on the subject’s practice but can this embodied experience be handled and moulded by the architect, the so-called designer of spaces? Movements can be considered as an expression drawn …

The Movement Of An Object Through A Field Creates A Complex Situation, Jared Scott Greenleaf Jun 2011

The Movement Of An Object Through A Field Creates A Complex Situation, Jared Scott Greenleaf

Theses and Dissertations

I aim to move the viewer through a system that consists of science fiction, of world building, with themes of nature, technology, and a subtle allusion to comic book aesthetics. Removing customary sci-fi and comic book narrative in favor of concept, self-awareness, and open-ended exploration, the outcome creates a complex setting. The report herein documents the various methods used to create this multifaceted installation space, which was the focus of my selected project.

Microbial Community Function In Freshwater Wetland Soils: Using Extracellular Enzyme Analysis To Study The Effect Of Moisture And Vegetation, Aaron Porter

Theses and Dissertations

Differences in microbial function via extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) were investigated to determine the potential effects of hydrology and plant-soil-microbe interactions in a young non-tidal freshwater riparian wetland. To study these relationships, three plots were established along a moisture gradient (Wet, Intermediate, Dry) within VCU Rice Center Within each main plot, five subplots were left undisturbed while another five were cleared of all above-ground plant biomass. Homogenized soil cores (top 10 cm) were analyzed for pH, redox, C:N, soil organic matter (SOM) content, saturation, and temperature. Microbial function was assessed using extracellular enzyme analysis. For most enzymes, a site difference …

Caspase-1 Dependent Il-1Β Secretion Is Critical For Host Defense In A Mouse Model Of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Lung Infection, Kenichi Shimada, Timothy R. Crother, Justin Karlin, Shuang Chen, Norika Chiba, V. Krishnan Ramanujan, Laurent Vergnes, David M. Ojcius, Moshe Arditi

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) is an important human pathogen that causes atypical pneumonia and is associated with various chronic inflammatory disorders. Caspase-1 is a key component of the ‘inflammasome’, and is required to cleave pro-IL-1β to bioactive IL-1β. Here we demonstrate for the first time a critical requirement for IL-1β in response to CP infection. Caspase-1−/− mice exhibit delayed cytokine production, defective clearance of pulmonary bacteria and higher mortality in response to CP infection. Alveolar macrophages harbored increased bacterial numbers due to reduced iNOS levels in Caspase-1−/− mice. Pharmacological blockade of the IL-1 receptor in CP infected wild-type mice …

The Spatial Ecology Of Black Groupers (Mycteroperca Bonaci) In The Upper Florida Keys, Veronique Koch Jun 2011

The Spatial Ecology Of Black Groupers (Mycteroperca Bonaci) In The Upper Florida Keys, Veronique Koch

Open Access Theses

Black groupers (Mycteroperca bonaci) are a critical component of coral reef ecosystems as well as South Florida fisheries. It is therefore of great concern that their essential fish habitat has not yet been fully defined. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the ecology of black groupers was characterized in the Upper Florida Keys. The first part of this study utilized acoustic telemetry. Self-contained acoustic receivers were placed in an array around Conch Reef and tracked 16 tagged black groupers for 483 days. Patterns of movement behavior and habitat usage were modeled using presence-absence data. The capture-recapture program MARK was used to estimate …

The Genetic And Functional Analysis Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Spectrum, Uzoezi Ozomaro Jun 2011

The Genetic And Functional Analysis Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Spectrum, Uzoezi Ozomaro

Open Access Dissertations

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the spectrum of associated conditions, affect 2-4% of the population worldwide. Although heritability studies in OCD have shown a 3 - 12 times increased risk for first degree relatives, the identification of the underlying risk-conferring genetic variation using classic genetic association studies has proven to be difficult. The possibility of a larger contribution of rare genetic variants to the risk of psychiatric disorder has been suggested by several successful studies. We expect that a spectrum of risk allele frequencies exists, which includes not only common variation but also a substantial amount of rare genetic variants that …

Juvenile Hormone Regulates Extreme Mandible Growth In Male Stag Beetles, Hiroki Gotoh, Richard Cornette, Shigeyuki Koshikawa, Yasukazu Okada, Laura Corley Lavine, Douglas J. Emlen, Toru Miura

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The morphological diversity of insects is one of the most striking phenomena in biology. Evolutionary modifications to the relative sizes of body parts, including the evolution of traits with exaggerated proportions, are responsible for a vast range of body forms. Remarkable examples of an insect trait with exaggerated proportions are the mandibular weapons of stag beetles. Male stag beetles possess extremely enlarged mandibles which they use in combat with rival males over females. As with other sexually selected traits, stag beetle mandibles vary widely in size among males, and this variable growth results from differential larval nutrition. However, the mechanisms …

Changes In Body Condition Of Hibernating Bats Support The Thrifty Female Hypothesis And Predict Consequences For Populations With White-Nose Syndrome, Kristin A. Jonasson, Craig K. R. Willis Jun 2011

Changes In Body Condition Of Hibernating Bats Support The Thrifty Female Hypothesis And Predict Consequences For Populations With White-Nose Syndrome, Kristin A. Jonasson, Craig K. R. Willis

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a new disease of bats that has devastated populations in eastern North America. Infection with the fungus, Geomyces destructans, is thought to increase the time bats spend out of torpor during hibernation, leading to starvation. Little is known about hibernation in healthy, free-ranging bats and more data are needed to help predict consequences of WNS. Trade-offs presumably exist between the energetic benefits and physiological/ecological costs of torpor, leading to the prediction that the relative importance of spring energy reserves should affect an individual's use of torpor and depletion of energy reserves during winter. Myotis lucifugus mate …

“What” And “Where” In Auditory Sensory Processing: A High-Density Electrical Mapping Study Of Distinct Neural Processes Underlying Sound Object Recognition And Sound Localization, Victoria M. Leavitt, Sophie Molholm, Manuel Gomez-Ramirez, John J. Foxe

Publications and Research

Functionally distinct dorsal and ventral auditory pathways for sound localization (WHERE) and sound object recognition (WHAT) have been described in non-human primates. A handful of studies have explored differential processing within these streams in humans, with highly inconsistent findings. Stimuli employed have included simple tones, noise bursts, and speech sounds, with simulated left–right spatial manipulations, and in some cases participants were not required to actively discriminate the stimuli. Our contention is that these paradigms were not well suited to dissociating processing within the two streams. Our aim here was to determine how early in processing we …

Transcriptome Characterization And Polymorphism Detection In Subspecies Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata), Prabin Bajgain Jun 2011

Transcriptome Characterization And Polymorphism Detection In Subspecies Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata), Prabin Bajgain

Theses and Dissertations

Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) is one of the ecologically most important shrub species in western North America. The species serves as a major source of food and habitat for the near-threatened sage grouse and various other fauna. Habitat loss due to a combination of disturbances followed by establishment of invasive plant species is considered as a serious threat to sustainability of the big sagebrush ecosystem. Because of its importance, restoration of this species is very crucial to those dependent on big sagebrush community. However, restoration of big sagebrush carried out by using diverse seed source can lead to …

Polar Dependence, Aspasia Tsoutsoura Jun 2011

Polar Dependence, Aspasia Tsoutsoura

Theses

This thesis is an exploration of the relation between contrasting pairs and materials. For my thesis body of work I chose metal and soft materials to be my opposites. Through sculptures and prints I explore the feelings and thoughts their juxtaposition causes, bringing out both their strong and weak characteristics and showing their interdependence. Polar Dependence is what characterizes these two "opposites", showing the need for these differences in our personal life and relationships. It asks the viewer to think beyond the ordinary use of these materials, to contemplate their qualities, the relationship between soft and strong, cold and warm, …

Building An Enhanced Drought Early Warning System (Dews): Tools And Services For Decision Support, Mark Svoboda Jun 2011

Building An Enhanced Drought Early Warning System (Dews): Tools And Services For Decision Support, Mark Svoboda

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Perhaps no other hazard lends itself as well to the need for a diligent early warning system (DEWS) than drought. Droughts typically evolve slowly, but have the potential to cover very large areas compared to hazards like hurricanes, tornadoes and floods, which have a much smaller geographic footprint. The U.S. took first steps in 2006 toward developing coordinated and integrated DEWS through the creation of the National Integrated Drought Information System, or NIDIS. More recently, the National Drought Mitigation Center (http://drought.unl.edu) has been working with NIDIS and other international parties (WMO, GEO, United Nations, etc.) with a goal of developing …

Law And Legal Theory In The History Of Corporate Responsibility: Corporate Personhood, Lyman Johnson Jun 2011

Law And Legal Theory In The History Of Corporate Responsibility: Corporate Personhood, Lyman Johnson

Seattle University Law Review

This Article, the first of a multipart project, addresses the nature of corporate personhood, one area where law has played a central role in the history of corporate responsibility in the United States.1 The treatment will be illustrative, not exhaustive. Consistent with the theme of the larger project, the Article serves to make the simple but important point that a full historical understanding of corporate responsibility requires an appreciation of the law’s significant, if ultimately limited, contribution to the longstanding American quest for more responsible corporate conduct. On one hand, the spheres of law and corporate responsibility, although clearly complementary, …

We have identified an environmental bacterium in the Candidate Division TM7 with ≥98.5% 16S rDNA gene homology to a group of TM7 bacteria associated with the human oral cavity and skin. The environmental TM7 bacterium (referred to as TM7a-like) was readily detectable in wastewater with molecular techniques over two years of sampling. We present the first images of TM7a-like cells through FISH technique and the first images of any TM7 as viable cells through the STARFISH technique. In situ quantification showed TM7 concentration in wastewater up to five times greater than in human oral sites. We speculate that upon further …
