Uncovering The Hidden Cognitive Processes And Underlying Dynamics Of Deception, Nicholas David Duran Jul 2011

Uncovering The Hidden Cognitive Processes And Underlying Dynamics Of Deception, Nicholas David Duran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the processing demands associated with motor responding and verbal statements during deceptive (or deceptive-like) behavior. In the first set of studies presented in Chapter 2, participants motor movements in a false response paradigm revealed signatures of competition with the truth. In a second set of studies presented in Chapter 3, deceptive participants used language that reflected cognitive and social demands inherent to various types of deception. In evaluating both motor and verbal cues, this dissertation provides a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to better understanding the cognitive processes underlying deception. in conducting the motor responding studies, participants' arm movements …

Narratives With An Impact: Linguistic Features Of Cognitive And Emotional Engagement In Transportation, Nick A. Benesh Jul 2011

Narratives With An Impact: Linguistic Features Of Cognitive And Emotional Engagement In Transportation, Nick A. Benesh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Narratives have the ability to impact a person's sense of reality by transporting them into a narrative world. However, the linguistic features of these narratives has been overlooked. Four experiments aimed to investigate which linguistic features may influence these feelings of being transported in text and in film. In the experiments participants read or watched narratives while their reading time, eye behavior, and conscious responses to whether they were feeling transported were recorded. The responses from the first experiment were used to create a formula for scoring narrative on transportability which was subsequently used to predict transportation levels in new …

Chris Ofili's, "The Holy Virgin Mary", The Black Female Form, And The Problem Of Postmodern Scholarship, Nancy Ellen Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Chris Ofili's "The Holy Virgin Mary," the Black Female Form, and the Problem of Postmodern Scholarship, explores the problems of postmodern scholarship in the visual arts by analyzing "The Holy Virgin Mary" by Chris Ofili and the circumstances involving the Sensation exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999. I placeOfili's work in context and make the claim that Ofili's work is largely an examination of his dual identities as a Catholic and person of African descent. I explore the larger cultural context by examining the black female figure in Ofili's work and in other postmodern artists dealing with similar themes. …

The Use Of Carbamazepine (Tegretol) In Psychiatry And Its Association To Kindling, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy And Psychopathology, James Stanch, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The recent theory of kindling may help to link neurophysiologic, neurotransmitter and neuroanatomic mechanisms important in understanding the neurology of behavior. Limbic kindling is of interest in developing models of epilepsy, psychosis, learning and memory (l -5). Kindling might explain the late development of psychopathology.

This paper will first define kindling and demonstrate how kindling offers a model within which to view more prolonged behavioral deviations as neurophysiological processes. The use of carbamazepine and its association to kindling, temporal lobe dysfunction and psychopathology will be discussed .

Simulation Of Abnormal/Normal Brain States Using The Kiv Model, Mark H. Myers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recent studies have focused on the phenomena of abnormal electrical brain activity which may transition into a debilitating seizure state through the entrainment of large populations of neurons.Starting from the initial epileptogenisis of a small population of abnormally firing neurons, to the mobilization of mesoscopic neuron populations behaving in a synchronous manner, a model has been formulated that captures the initial epileptogenisis to the semi-periodic entrainment of distant neuron populations. The normal non-linear dynamic signal captured through EEG, moves into a semi-periodic state, which can be quantified as the seizure state.Capturing the asynchronous/synchronous behavior of the normal/pathological brain state will be …

Chaos And Control: The Hidden Tension Between Liberalism And Freedom, Drew D. Dickson Jul 2011

Chaos And Control: The Hidden Tension Between Liberalism And Freedom, Drew D. Dickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

From self-sovereignty to individual independence, freedom is about control. When people want freedom, they yearn for exclusive control over their life. Liberal institutions, from democracy to market economies, however, do not offer people control. Instead, liberal machinery outsources control to a collective, invisible power. Far fom control, chaos governs liberal society. In the earliest stages of development, liberalism did serve the pursuit of freedom because liebral reforms focused on the destruction of controlling power from above, i.e. the expansion of liebrty. Because controlling onself first requires being controlled by no one lese, liberty is the first, but incomplete, step toward …

Analysis Of The Role Of Outer Surface Protein C (Ospc) In Borrelia Burgdorferi Pathogenesis, Delacy Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations

Lyme disease is an emerging infection that is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. These bacteria exist in nature through an enzootic life cycle involving Ixodes ticks and various reservoir hosts. One way that this bacterium adapts to the different hosts in the enzootic cycle is through the expression of outer surface protein C (OspC). OspC is a surface exposed lipoprotein encoded on circular plasmid 26 that forms homodimers on the bacterial surface and has distinct conserved and variable portions of sequence. When ospC is deleted, the spirochetes are unable to cause mammalian infection although the mechanism of …
