When I Move, You Move: Coordination In Conversation, Gina M. Caucci Jul 2011

When I Move, You Move: Coordination In Conversation, Gina M. Caucci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Researchers have been interested in the dynamics of human conversation for several decades. One major focus of this line of research has been the mechanisms by which humans coordinate in conversation. To study the coordination of conversation within dyads often requires an understanding of statistical methods, which handle time series data. Traditionally, there are no definitive standards for defining one of the important parameters in time series analysis, window size. Therefore, the purpose of the current project was to elucidate the mechanisms through which conversational coordination emerges by utilizing conversational turn-taking as the basis for choosing the appropriate window size …

Synergistic Combination Of Hyperoxygenation And Radiotherapy By Repeated Assessments Of Tumor Po2 With Epr Oximetry, Huagang Hou, Ruhong Dong, Jean P. Lariviere, Sriram P. Mupparaju, Harold M. Swartz, Nadeem Khan

Dartmouth Scholarship

The effect of hyperoxygenation with carbogen (95% O2 + 5% CO2) inhalation on RIF-1 tumor pO2and its consequence on growth inhibition with fractionated radiotherapy is reported. The temporal changes in the tumor pO2 were assessed by in vivo Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) oximetry in mice breathing 30% O2 or carbogen and the tumors were irradiated with 4 Gy/day for 5 consecutive days; a protocol that emulates the clinical application of carbogen. The RIF-1 tumors were hypoxic with a tissue pO2 of 5–9 mmHg. Carbogen (CB) breathing significantly increased tumor pO2, …

Protection And Attachment Of Vibrio Cholerae Mediated By The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In The Infant Mouse Model, Shelly J. Krebs, Ronald K. Taylor Jul 2011

Protection And Attachment Of Vibrio Cholerae Mediated By The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In The Infant Mouse Model, Shelly J. Krebs, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Colonization of the human small intestine by Vibrio cholerae is an essential step in pathogenesis that requires the type IV toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP). To date, three functions of TCP have been characterized: it serves as the CTXΦ receptor, secretes the colonization factor TcpF, and functions in microcolony formation by mediating bacterium-bacterium interactions. Although type IV pili in other pathogenic bacteria have been characterized as playing a major role in attachment to epithelial cells, there are very few studies to suggest that TCP acts as an attachment factor. Taking this into consideration, we investigated the function of TCP in attachment to …

Spatial Ecology Of The Palm-Leaf Skeletonizer, Homaledra Sabelella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae), James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Understanding the processes that determine the distribution of populations is a fundamental goal in ecology. In this study, I determined the relative contribution of space and the biotic and abiotic environment to the distribution of the palm-leaf skeletonizer Homaledra sabalella (PLS; Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) among patchily distributed dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor; Arecaceae). Based on surveys conducted at two sites in the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, Louisiana, I found that the distribution of the PLS was primarily related to local environmental conditions - number of PLS increased with palmetto height, was greater in dry versus wet habitats, and varied in an inconsistent …

Genetic Variability Of The Stable Fly, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) Assessed On A Global Scale Using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism, Kathleen M. Kneeland Jul 2011

Genetic Variability Of The Stable Fly, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) Assessed On A Global Scale Using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism, Kathleen M. Kneeland

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock and humans. It is a major pest in livestock facilities, where exist excellent breeding sites such as spilled feed mixed with manure. The pestiferous nature and painful bite cause stress to cattle and other animals. Cattle perform avoidance behaviors such as bunching together, standing in water, tail swishing, ear flicking and leg stamping. The stress and avoidance behaviors result in reductions in weight gain or milk production, with an estimated annual economic loss of > $1billion. Therefore, the development of more efficient control methods would benefit the global economy, …

Modelling Of Two Wheeler Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles, Bhanuben Amrutlal Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this work was to identify and specify the requirements of critical components of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems in 2-wheeled vehicles. Specifically, mathematical simulation tools, Matlab, Simulink and ADVISOR were used to explore the viability of both a smaller than 10kW fuel cell and smaller than 10kW hybrid fuel cell scooter. Hydrogen, air, and water consumption as well as heat management were monitored under varying conditions in simulations. Efficiency of the overall system was found to be approximately 50% and highly dependent on the fuel cell auxiliary power source. Due to the existing fuel converter …

Lafora Disease E3-Ubiquitin Ligase Malin Is Related To Trim32 At Both The Phylogenetic And Functional Level, Carlos Romá-Mateo, Daniel Moreno, Santiago Vernia, Teresa Rubio, Travis M. Bridges, Matthew S. Gentry, Pascual Sanz Jul 2011

Lafora Disease E3-Ubiquitin Ligase Malin Is Related To Trim32 At Both The Phylogenetic And Functional Level, Carlos Romá-Mateo, Daniel Moreno, Santiago Vernia, Teresa Rubio, Travis M. Bridges, Matthew S. Gentry, Pascual Sanz

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Malin is an E3-ubiquitin ligase that is mutated in Lafora disease, a fatal form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. In order to perform its function, malin forms a functional complex with laforin, a glucan phosphatase that facilitates targeting of malin to its corresponding substrates. While laforin phylogeny has been studied, there are no data on the evolutionary lineage of malin.

RESULTS: After an extensive search for malin orthologs, we found that malin is present in all vertebrate species and a cephalochordate, in contrast with the broader species distribution previously reported for laforin. These data suggest that in addition to forming …

The Role Of Metallothionein-3 In The Regulation Of Cell Differentiation, Chandra Sekhar Bathula Jul 2011

The Role Of Metallothionein-3 In The Regulation Of Cell Differentiation, Chandra Sekhar Bathula

Theses and Dissertations

Metallothioneins, a group of low molecular weight, cysteine rich, intracellular proteins, are known to sequester heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd+2) and mercury and provide protection against their toxic effects. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that the third isoform of metallothionein (MT-3) is expressed in the human kidney in situ, including the cultures of human proximal tubule (HPT) cells. The stable expression of MT-3 in the immortalized proximal tubule cell line that lacks its expression restored dome formation in these cells, suggesting that MT-3 may have a role in differentiation and vectorial active transport. This study further investigated …

Mineralogical Characterizations Of Asteroids In/Near The 3:1 Kirkwood Gap, Sherry K. Fieber-Beyer Jul 2011

Mineralogical Characterizations Of Asteroids In/Near The 3:1 Kirkwood Gap, Sherry K. Fieber-Beyer

Theses and Dissertations

This research program initiated a systematic visible-near-infrared (VNIR) spectroscopic survey to search for links between twenty-seven asteroidal bodies adjacent to the 3:1 resonance and meteorite types in the terrestrial collections. The 3:1 Kirkwood gap located at 2.5 AU is a potential major source for meteorites and near-Earth asteroids. This research program utilized observations using the NASA IRTF SpeX instrument to obtain high signal-to-noise NIR spectra (0.8–2.5 μm) of asteroids in a zone centered on the 3:1 resonance. The spectra were used to mineralogically characterize asteroids in the zone to identify their meteorite analogs (if any). The mineralogy, petrology, isotope chemistry, …

Fast Relabeling Of Deformable Delaunay Tetrahedral Meshes Using A Compact Uniform Grid, David C. Frogley Jul 2011

Fast Relabeling Of Deformable Delaunay Tetrahedral Meshes Using A Compact Uniform Grid, David C. Frogley

Theses and Dissertations

We address the problem of fast relabeling of deformable Delaunay tetrahedral meshes using a compact uniform grid, with CPU parallelization through OpenMP. This problem is important in visualizing the simulation of deformable objects and arises in scientific visualization, games, computer vision, and motion picture production. Many existing software tools and APIs have the ability to manipulate 3D virtual objects. Prior mesh-based representations either allow topology changes or are fast. We aim for both. Specifically, we improve the efficiency of the relabeling step in the Delaunay deformable mesh invented by Pons and Boissonnat and improved by Tychonievich and Jones. The relabeling …

Regulation Of Stomatal Tropism And Infection By Light In Cercospora Zeae-Maydis: Evidence For Coordinated Host/Pathogen Responses To Photoperiod?, Hun Kim, John B. Ridenour, Larry D. Dunkle, Burton H. Bluhm Jul 2011

Regulation Of Stomatal Tropism And Infection By Light In Cercospora Zeae-Maydis: Evidence For Coordinated Host/Pathogen Responses To Photoperiod?, Hun Kim, John B. Ridenour, Larry D. Dunkle, Burton H. Bluhm

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Cercospora zeae-maydis causes gray leaf spot of maize, which has become one of the most widespread and destructive diseases of maize in the world. C. zeae-maydis infects leaves through stomata, which is predicated on the ability of the pathogen to perceive stomata and reorient growth accordingly. In this study, the discovery that light was required for C. zeae-maydis to perceive stomata and infect leaves led to the identification of CRP1, a gene encoding a putative blue-light photoreceptor homologous to White Collar-1 (WC-1) of Neurospora crassa. Disrupting CRP1 via homologous recombination revealed roles in multiple aspects of pathogenesis, including …

Functional Characterization Of The Streptococcus Sanguinis Com Regulon, Jill Callahan Jul 2011

Functional Characterization Of The Streptococcus Sanguinis Com Regulon, Jill Callahan

Theses and Dissertations

Streptococcus sanguinis is an important component of the dental plaque biofilm and is believed to play a beneficial role in the oral cavity. S. sanguinis is also a leading cause of infective endocarditis (IE), a potentially lethal infection of the cardiac valves. S. sanguinis possesses genetic competence, the ability to acquire exogenous DNA into its genome. In the well characterized system of S. pneumoniae, genetic competence requires a quorum sensing system encoded by the early comCDE genes, as well as late genes controlled by the alternate sigma factor, ComX. Previous studies in other streptococcal species have suggested functions for the …

Ethical Decisions About Sexual Harassment In Organizations: Automatic, Controlled, Or Both?, Frank Bosco Jr. Jul 2011

Ethical Decisions About Sexual Harassment In Organizations: Automatic, Controlled, Or Both?, Frank Bosco Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation describes three studies designed to evaluate the contributions of automatic and controlled cognitive processes on observers' decisions and behaviors related to sexual harassment in organizations. Although management scholars have proposed that decisions about sexual harassment may be guided by automatic cognitive processes, evidence and implications related to this proposition are limited, and only recently have theories capable of explaining such automatic influences emerged. In Study one, 124 undergraduate students processed and made decisions about sexual harassment scenarios while completing a secondary task used to infer cognitive effort expenditure. I manipulated the moral intensity and issue typicality of the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

An Assessment of Differential Susceptibility of Raccoons (Procyon lotor) to Capture in Live Traps in Western Tennessee Spatial and temporal variation in differential susceptibility of male and female raccoons (Procyon lotor) to capture in live traps was investigated during 2001-2005. Initial captures and recaptures were assessed using mark-recapture procedures on 6 spatially-independent grids. Numbers of males captured were always greater than numbers of females spatially and temporally, although not always significantly. In the spatial assessment, initial captures ranged from 86 (56:30 males:females) at Site 1 to 12 (11:1) at Site 4; recaptures ranged from 34 (22:12) at Site 1 to …

The Sistrum As A Marker Of The Divine Nature Of Queenship In The Amarna Period, Lindsay M. Vosburg Jul 2011

The Sistrum As A Marker Of The Divine Nature Of Queenship In The Amarna Period, Lindsay M. Vosburg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis examines the religious and political implications of changes to the iconography of the sistrum, a musical instrument associated with the goddess Hathor, during the Amarna Period (c. 1391-1323 BCE). In the reign of Amenhotep III and in the early years of Akhenaten, sistra bore the traditional image of Hathor's face and were used by royal women in rituals. In the latter part of Akhenaten's reign, however, Hathor's face was replaced by a papyrus umbel, and the queen no longer used the instrument in religious ceremonies. The reign of Tutankhamun saw a return to religious orthodoxy and in the …

Economic Growth And The Environment With Clean And Dirty Consumption, Carlo Orecchia, Maria Elisabetta Tessitore Jul 2011

Economic Growth And The Environment With Clean And Dirty Consumption, Carlo Orecchia, Maria Elisabetta Tessitore

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper aims to verify the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) or inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation in the context of endogenous growth. An important feature of this study is that the EKC is examined in the presence of pollution as a by product of consumption activities; also, pollution is a stock variable rather than a flow and tends to accumulate over time. In order to highlight the role of consumption on the environment, consumers do not consider directly pollution in the maximization problem and are assumed to choose between two different consumption types, …

The Levels Of Analysis Revisited., Scott A Macdougall-Shackleton Jul 2011

The Levels Of Analysis Revisited., Scott A Macdougall-Shackleton

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The term levels of analysis has been used in several ways: to distinguish between ultimate and proximate levels, to categorize different kinds of research questions and to differentiate levels of reductionism. Because questions regarding ultimate function and proximate mechanisms are logically distinct, I suggest that distinguishing between these two levels is the best use of the term. Integrating across levels in research has potential risks, but many benefits. Consideration at one level can help generate novel hypotheses at the other, define categories of behaviour and set criteria that must be addressed. Taking an adaptationist stance thus strengthens research on proximate …

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this honors thesis was to summarize and analyze the competing positions about the causes and consequences of the continuing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon based on the positions recently presented ( i.e, from 2000 to 2010) in published sources on the subject. This analysis of the competing positions on the causes and consequences of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has focused on and has been guided by a search for answers to two critical questions:

Which groups of people in the world benefit from the way in which the causes and consequences of deforestation in …

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate In Mast Cell-Mediated Allergic Responses, Megan Price Jul 2011

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate In Mast Cell-Mediated Allergic Responses, Megan Price

Theses and Dissertations

Mast cells play a critical role in both acute and chronic inflammation and mature in peripheral tissues from bone marrow-derived progenitors that circulate in the blood as immature precursors. Mast cell progenitors are likely to encounter the serum-borne bioactive sphingolipid metabolite, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), during migration to target tissues. Mast cells developed from human cord blood-derived progenitors cultured with stem cell factor (SCF) alone express intragranular tryptase (MCT), the phenotype predominant in the lung. S1P accelerated the development of cord blood-derived mast cells (CB-MCs) and strikingly increased the numbers of mast cells expressing chymase. These mast cells have functional FcepsilonRI, and …

Silk Fibroin-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Jennifer Mccool Jul 2011

Silk Fibroin-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Jennifer Mccool

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the comparison of the electrospun silk scaffolds to the electrospun silk fibroin gel scaffolds. Moreover, this study examined the differences in cross-linking effects of genipin and methanol as well as solvents on the mechanical properties and cell compatibility of the scaffolds. Silk scaffolds were electrospun from an aqueous solution or 1,1,1,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) without genipin, immediately after 8 % (wt) genipin was added to the solution, and 18 hours after genipin blended with the solution. Uniaxial tensile testing determined that the silk scaffolds electrospun from water exhibit a higher modulus and peak stress than that of the …

Applied And Mechanistic Studies Of Microbial 17beta-Estradiol Degradation, Zhongtian Li Jul 2011

Applied And Mechanistic Studies Of Microbial 17beta-Estradiol Degradation, Zhongtian Li

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The presence of natural estrogens, a class of endocrine disrupting compounds, in water has caused increasing concerns over their adverse impacts on the health of aquatic eco-systems and human beings. In this study, adsorption characteristics of two natural estrogens, 17β-estradiol (E2) and estrone (E1), on granular activated carbon (GAC) were investigated in isotherm tests and in a GAC column. The GAC column was then converted to a biologically active carbon (BAC) column and the removal efficiency of E2 and its primary biodegradation intermediate E1 were monitored. During BAC operation, the impacts of various reactor operation parameters, such as the carbon …

Opioid Addiction Treatments During Pregnancy And Their Effects On Axonal Growth And Myelination In The Developing Central Nervous System, Manisha Magar Jul 2011

Opioid Addiction Treatments During Pregnancy And Their Effects On Axonal Growth And Myelination In The Developing Central Nervous System, Manisha Magar

Theses and Dissertations

Treatment with buprenorphine represents a promising alternative for pregnant opioid addicts but there is a need to understand potential effects on nervous system development. We previously showed effects of perinatal exposure to buprenorphine on axonal caliber and myelination in 26-day-old rat corpus callosum. These changes, detected at the end of rapid brain myelination and accompanied by earlier oligodendrocyte maturation, suggested interference with mechanisms coordinating axonal growth and myelination. To better understand buprenorphine actions and to establish whether these effects extend to the spinal cord, we analyzed the corpus callosum and corticospinal tract at 16 days of age, just before the …

A Comparative Study Of A Pathogenic Versus A Nonpathogenic Naegleria Species, Melissa Jamerson Jul 2011

A Comparative Study Of A Pathogenic Versus A Nonpathogenic Naegleria Species, Melissa Jamerson

Theses and Dissertations

Naegleria fowleri (N. fowleri) and Naegleria lovaniensis (N. lovaniensis) are closely related amebae found in the environment. N. fowleri causes Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), a fatal disease of the central nervous system, while N. lovaniensis is nonpathogenic. N. fowleri infection occurs when amebae enter the nasal passages, and migrate to the brain. The molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of PAM are not well-defined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to define phenotypic characteristics that may be functionally linked to the pathogenicity associated with N. fowleri. Studies revealed that N. fowleri has a faster growth rate and is more …
