Further Considerations On The Species Of The Genus Orthochirus Karsch, 1891 From Africa, With Description Of Three New Species (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Wilson R. Lourenço, Elise-Anne Leguin
Euscorpius
New considerations are proposed regarding the African species of the genus Orthochirus Karsch, 1891. Two species, Orthochirus aristidis (Simon, 1882) and Orthochirus innesi Simon, 1910 have been the subject of several publications in the past decades; however, doubts remain about their exact identity and range of geographical distribution. In this note, their taxonomic status is reinvestigated. The type material is revised and the lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for O. aristidis. Revised diagnoses and illustrations are proposed for both species, and these are confirmed as valid. Three new species are described from Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania. The total number …

Polymorphism And Hybridization In Species Of Hottentotta Birula, 1908 (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Wilson R. Lourenço, Eric Ythier, Mark Stockmann, John L. Cloudsley-Thompson
Euscorpius
A new and well documented case of hybridization among scorpions is presented. It was obtained under laboratory conditions between Hottentotta jayakari (Pocock) and Hottentotta salei (Vachon) specimens of which had been collected in the northern and southern regions of Oman. Hybrids were successfully produced not only from F0 males and females, but also from F1 males and females, thereby attesting to the fact that the first generation obtained (F1), was completely fertile. Both F1 and F2 broods were composed of dark and pale morphs, indicating that the juveniles could inherit either one or …
Redescription Of Tityus Pictus Pocock, 1893 And Tityus Smithii Pocock, 1893, With Notes On The Tityus Species From The Lesser Antilles (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Rolando Teruel
Euscorpius
In the present paper, the taxonomic status of Tityus pictus Pocock, 1893 and all of its junior synonyms is revised. Tityus smithii Pocock, 1893 is restored as a valid species, and the subspecies Tityus smithii microdon Pocock, 1893 (currently T. pictus microdon) is regarded as its junior synonym. Both T. pictus and T. smithii are redescribed, supplementary information on their morphological variability are given, and their geographical distribution is up- dated, including a new locality record for the latter. Also, the taxonomic position and relationships of all Lesser Antillean species of the genus are clarified: it is demonstrated that …
You Only Live Twice: The Representation Of The Afterlife In Film, Amanda Joy Shapiro
You Only Live Twice: The Representation Of The Afterlife In Film, Amanda Joy Shapiro
Open Access Theses
The objective of this thesis is to examine and analyze the presentation of spaces, figures, and the processes of judgment in afterlife films. American and foreign titles as well as television series are assessed as afterlife films by two criteria: (1) A character has clinically died yet continues to exist and (2) a living character finds his or her self in an afterlife space. Films with characters that have near-death experiences (NDEs) are included in relation to the above three qualities. After screening nearly one hundred and thirty titles, I have found there is a basic formula structure that has …
A Model-Based Approach For Automatic Recovery From Memory Leaks In Enterprise Applications, Zimin Wang
A Model-Based Approach For Automatic Recovery From Memory Leaks In Enterprise Applications, Zimin Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Large-scale distributed computing systems such as data centers are hosted on heterogeneous and networked servers that execute in a dynamic and uncertain operating environment, caused by factors such as time-varying user workload and various failures. Therefore, achieving stringent quality-of-service goals is a challenging task, requiring a comprehensive approach to performance control, fault diagnosis, and failure recovery. This work presents a model-based approach for fault management, which integrates limited lookahead control (LLC), diagnosis, and fault-tolerance concepts that: (1) enables systems to adapt to environment variations, (2) maintains the availability and reliability of the system, (3) facilitates system recovery from failures. We …

A Three-Dimensional Heat And Mass Transport Model For A Tree Within A Forest, Jerrell Ray Ballard
A Three-Dimensional Heat And Mass Transport Model For A Tree Within A Forest, Jerrell Ray Ballard
Theses and Dissertations
A three-dimensional computational tool was developed that simulates the heat and mass transfer interaction in a soil-root-stem system (SRSS) for a tree in a seasonally varying deciduous forest. The development of the SRSS model involved the modification and coupling of existing heat and mass transport tools to reproduce the three-dimensional diurnal internal and external temperatures, internal fluid distribution, and heat flow in the soil, roots, and stems. The model also required the development of a parallel Monte-Carlo algorithm to simulate the solar and environmental radiation regime consisting of sky and forest radiative effects surrounding the tree. The SRSS was tested, …
Saturated Solution Effects On Crystal Breakage Experiments In Stirred Vessels, Devkant Gandhi
Saturated Solution Effects On Crystal Breakage Experiments In Stirred Vessels, Devkant Gandhi
Theses and Dissertations
Crystallization is a key unit operation in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries, many of which employ batch stirred vessels for crystallization. Although using stirred vessels for crystallization has advantages such as better mixing and faster cooling, one of the disadvantages is that due to the presence of mechanical parts in the vessel such as baffles, impeller etc., crystals break up while stirring and generate unwanted secondary nucleation. This process contributes to a wide crystal size distribution with a smaller than desired mean crystal size. For studying crystal breakage phenomenon, experimentalists choose to use nonsolvents for crystal breakage experiments to …

This novel engineering approach is referred to as bio-inspired design. In this context, the present study quantifies the structure-property relations in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) horn keratin, qualitatively characterizes the effects of a tapered spiral geometry (the same form as in a ram’s horn) on pressure wave and impulse mitigation, describes the stress attenuation capabilities and features of a ram’s head, and compares the structures and mechanical properties of …
Traumatic Brain Injury: Modeling And Simulation Of The Brain At Large Deformation, Raj Prabhu
Traumatic Brain Injury: Modeling And Simulation Of The Brain At Large Deformation, Raj Prabhu
Theses and Dissertations
The brain is a complex organ and its response to the mechanical loads at all strain rates has been nonlinear and inelastic in nature. Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) high strain rate compressive tests conducted on porcine brain samples showed a strain rate dependent inelastic mechanical behavior. Finite Element (FE) modeling of the SHPB setup in ABAQUS/Explicit, using a specific constitutive model (MSU TP Ver. 1.1) for the brain, showed non-uniform stress state during tissue deformation. Song et al.’s assertion of using annular samples for negating inertial effects was also tested. FE simulation results showed that the use of cylindrical or …

The Effect Of Dietary Changes On Microbial Populations Within The Gastrointestinal Tract Of The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), Candace Lareine Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Both in-situ and ex-situ giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), display shifts in bamboo species and part preference throughout the year. The effects of this shifting preference on gastrointestinal (GIT) microbiota were observed using traditional culturing methods to characterize normal GIT microflora from fecal samples and behavioral feeding data of adult male and female pandas over a fourteen-month period. Linear and quadratic fits were used to determine any significant relationships between the time of year and part preference on the GIT microflora (P<0.05). Significant values for time of year were observed with the linear fit in total aerobes (P-value=0.0368), streptococci (P-value=0.0120), and lactobacilli (P-value=0.0166) and quadratic fits in streptococci (P-value=0.0382) and Bacteroides spp. (P-value=0.0134) at á=0.05. Significant linear relationships were observed with part preference and lactobacilli and Bacteroides spp., P-values of 0.0028 and 0.0030, respectively, indicating that part preference and time of year may affect the flux of panda GIT microflora.

Disturbance And Its Effects On Archaeological Significance And Integrity, Jason Alan Kennedy
Disturbance And Its Effects On Archaeological Significance And Integrity, Jason Alan Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
Significance and integrity are key concepts for archaeology, and how they are judged is determined by an archaeologist’s perceptions of disturbance. This thesis explicitly considers these concepts and how they relate to evolutionary theory and National Register eligibility. A site with known disturbance was chosen to determine whether it could be judged significant assuming that there was no disturbance. Controlled surface collection, magnetometer survey, excavation and landowner interview data were used to determine whether what made the site significant had been lost due to disturbance. The results indicate that the co-mingling of occupations in the plow zone normally would have …

Materials that can mimic the dielectric properties of human skin, adipose, muscle, malignant and healthy fibroglandular tissue, liver, pancreas, and kidney within the frequency range of 500 MHz to 20 GHz have been characterized and tested. The tissue mimicking materials are used to construct biological phantoms for studies that involve the investigation of wireless medical telemetry and a microwave breast cancer detection device.
Classes Of Reaction Diffusion Equations With Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Jerome Goddard
Classes Of Reaction Diffusion Equations With Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Jerome Goddard
Theses and Dissertations
We study positive solutions to classes of steady state reaction diffusion equations that arise naturally in applications. In particular, we study models arising from population dynamics and combustion theory. The main focus of this dissertation is the mathematical analysis of a challenging new class of problems when a certain nonlinear boundary condition is satisfied. In particular, we establish existence and multiplicity results by making use of the Quadrature method, the method of sub-super solutions, and degree theory. The results in this dissertation provide a significant contribution towards the analysis of elliptic boundary value problems with nonlinear boundary conditions.

Modifying The Double-Ovsynch Protocol To Include Human Chorionic Gonadotropin To Synchronize Estrus In Dairy Cattle, Joseph Andrew Binversie
Modifying The Double-Ovsynch Protocol To Include Human Chorionic Gonadotropin To Synchronize Estrus In Dairy Cattle, Joseph Andrew Binversie
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this study were to determine whether conception, ovulation rates, presynchronization rates, or follicle and CL characteristics were altered after modifying the Double-Ovsynch (DO) protocol to include human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) compared to the conventional DO protocol in dairy heifers and lactating dairy cows. We hypothesized that replacing the first injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) in the DO protocol with hCG would increase the proportion of females that ovulate, thus improving the presynchronization rate leading to increased conception rates. Ovulation rates were increased in cows administered hCG compared to GnRH, but subsequent synchronization, and conception rates did …
Foraging Behavior Of Northern Bobwhites In Relation To Resource Availability, Ryan Spencer Miller
Foraging Behavior Of Northern Bobwhites In Relation To Resource Availability, Ryan Spencer Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is a popular game bird that inhabits pine grasslands throughout the Southeast. This study used experimental manipulation of food resources to investigate how resource availability influenced foraging behavior and space use of bobwhite in a southern pine-grassland forest system. Radio marked bobwhite were monitored to determine daily space use, movements, and daily and seasonal ranges. I observed no difference in daily (P = 0.06) or seasonal home range size (P = 0.55) between feeding treatments. However, dispersion in daily locations of radio-marked bobwhite differed among feed levels (P < 0.001). I assessed effects of food availability on diet and total body lipids of birds harvested from each treatment during February. Although bobwhite extensively utilized supplemental feed when available, energy value of pre-roosting crop contents did not differ among treatments (P = 0.41), but total body lipids differed between feed treatments and years (P < 0.001).
Formulation And Sensory Evaluation Of Gluten-Free Muffins Containing Flax, Adam Michael Woodyard
Formulation And Sensory Evaluation Of Gluten-Free Muffins Containing Flax, Adam Michael Woodyard
Theses and Dissertations
Celiac disease is characterized by an allergic reaction to gluten that causes inflammation of the small intestine and can lead to malabsorption and malnutrition. Glutenree products are being developed that meet dietary needs of individuals with celiac disease. However, these products often lack whole grains and fiber. Fortification of glutenree products with flax can increase nutritional value and alleviate inflammation. Sensory analysis (N=152) was conducted to evaluate the acceptability of glutenree muffins with moderate (3.8%) and high (7.4%) amounts of added flax. Results indicated that consumers preferred (p<0.05) the muffin without flax or the highlax muffin more than the muffin with the moderatelax treatment. The highlax and control treatments were rated 6.7, between like slightly and moderately like; the muffins from the moderatelax treatment were rated 6.4 on a nine-point hedonic scale. Producers of glutenree products could potentially formulate muffins that include flax and are acceptable to consumers.
