BACKGROUND: Amyloid plaques, a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), are accompanied by activated microglia. The role of activated microglia in the pathogenesis of AD remains controversial: either clearing Aβ deposits by phagocytosis or releasing proinflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic substances. Microglia can be activated via toll-like receptors (TLRs), a class of pattern-recognition receptors in the innate immune system. We previously demonstrated that an AD mouse model homozygous for a loss-of-function mutation of TLR4 had increases in Aβ deposits and buffer-soluble Aβ in the brain as compared with a TLR4 wild-type AD mouse model at 14-16 months of age. However, it …

The Formation And Stability Of Radical-Molecule And Radical-Radical Complexes And Their Importance In Atmospheric Processes, Jared M. Clark
The Formation And Stability Of Radical-Molecule And Radical-Radical Complexes And Their Importance In Atmospheric Processes, Jared M. Clark
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the role that radical-molecule complexes play in the chemistry of Earth's atmosphere. The formation of such complexes can have direct and pronounced effects on the reaction and product outcome of atmospheric chemical reactions. Some attention is also given to the formation of radial-radical pre-reactive complexes in the HO + ClO system. Peroxy radicals (RO2) can form stable complexes with polar compounds such as H2O, NH3, and CH3OH. For the simplest RO2 radical, HO2, complex formation (e.g., HO2-H2O, HO2-NH3, and HO2-722;CH3OH) gives rise to a significant increase in the HO2 self-reaction rate constant. Although this phenomenon has been …

The Possibility Of Buddhist Virtue: A Christian Response, Jonathan Royce Pruitt
The Possibility Of Buddhist Virtue: A Christian Response, Jonathan Royce Pruitt
Masters Theses
The heart of Buddhism is ethics. This is evident even in the legendary accounts of the Buddha's life. The Buddha first encountered the problem of suffering after he finally escaped the isolation of the palace he had grown up in. His father, a powerful ruler, wanted to force his son into a life of politics and war. He had been warned that if his son was exposed to the kind of life people experience every day, a life marked by suffering, that his son would likely become a great teacher instead of a ruler. However, despite his father's best efforts, …

Differential Gene Expression In Male And Female Rainbow Trout Embryos Prior To The Onset Of Gross Morphological Differentiation Of The Gonads, Matthew C. Hale, Peng Xu, Julie Scardina, Paul A. Wheeler, Gary H. Thorgaard, Krista M. Nichols
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: There are large differences between the sexes at the genetic level; these differences include heterogametic sex chromosomes and/or differences in expression of genes between the sexes. In rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) qRT-PCR studies have found significant differences in expression of several candidate sex determining genes. However, these genes represent a very small fraction of the genome and research in other species suggests there are large portions of the transcriptome that are differentially expressed between the sexes. These differences are especially noticeable once gonad differentiation and maturation has occurred, but less is known at earlier stages of development. Here we …

Impact Of Marina Construction On Scleractinian Corals In Kampung Tekek, Tioman Island, Malaysia / Nikoo Cheheltani, Nikoo Cheheltani
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study was conducted to determine the impacts of newly constructed marina on the adjacent coral reefs in Kampung Tekek, Tioman Island. Two study sites were chosen, consisting of the fringing coral reef adjacent to the constructed marina and a control site 3 nm south which was the fringing coral reef around Pulau Renggis (Pulau=Island). Acute and chronic impacts in two depths (shallow, <6 m and deep, 6-12 m) at the Marina site were studied. To document impacts of the construction, substrate cover percentage and environmental parameters such as sedimentation rate and sediment type were measured. In addition, changes in physiological aspects were monitored on four different coral growth forms. The acute impact study using modified Reef Check showed that there were some negative changes such as coral breakage and increased sand cover (from 6.88% to 22.50 %) and silt cover (from 0% to 16.25%). Differences in substrate cover before and after construction were detected in deep water with higher Recently Killed Corals (%) and shallow water with higher Rubble (%). The chronic impacts study showed that there was a significant difference (F: 6.735, p<0.05) in sedimentation rate between Marina site (up to mean of 23.37 mg/cm²day in Marina Shallow) and control site at Renggis (mean of 0.59 mg/cm²day). The higher sedimentation rate recorded in Marina site significantly decreased the light intensity to a daily mean of 275.15 Lux. Coral cover % was lower in Marina site (with the lowest average of 24.74 %) compared to control site (53.27 %). Comparison between shallow and deep areas in Marina site showed that Marina Deep was the most affected due to high sedimentation and its lower light intensity. Changes in zooxanthellae density and chlorophyll content of the selected scleractinian coral growth forms indicated that the corals had been under stress due to smothering by sediments in Marina site. Foliose growth form showed more changes in their physiological aspects compared to other iv growth forms. Results of this study demonstrated some negative acute and chronic impacts of the marina construction to the adjacent coral reef. Therefore management programs should be improved so as to prevent or at least reduce the impacts of similar constructions at the vicinity of sensitive habitats in the future.

Mechanisms Of Prenatal High-Salt "Fetal Programming" Resulting In Stress Hyperresponsiveness In The Adult Female Offspring In The Sprague Dawley Rat., Clinton L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Female offspring of Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high-salt diet (HS) during pregnancy show an enhancement of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) response to acute stress in adulthood compared to offspring whose mothers were fed a normal-salt diet (NS) [1]. In the present study, we first examined the expression of soluble epoxide hydrolase (SEH) protein in brain tissue. Whole brains were collected and SEH gene (EPHX2) mRNA and SEH protein expression were analyzed using RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. mRNA levels were relatively decreased in high-salt rats (1.0 ± 0.32 NS vs 0.39 ± 0.07 HS, n=6). However, …

Characterizing The Distribution Of Planktonic Fecal Bacteria In The James River, Richmond, Virginia, John Furry
Theses and Dissertations
Surface waters containing fecal bacteria present significant public health risks. Understanding the sources of and factors affecting the distribution of fecal-indicating bacteria is necessary to predict potential illnesses more effectively. This thesis presents two studies on the distribution of fecal bacteria in the James River through Richmond, Virginia. Chapter 1 describes nearly 11 years of water quality, climate, and hydrologic data that occurred with changes in Escherichia coli concentrations, concluding that Richmond contributes significant quantities of fecal bacteria to the James River, and that the distribution of these bacteria varies seasonally. Chapter 2 details the development of Polymerase Chain Reaction …

On Fabre’S Traces: An Important Contributor To The Knowledge Of Buthus Occitanus (Amoreux, 1789), Marco Colombo
Euscorpius
Jean-Henri Casimir Fabre (1823–1915) has probably been one of the most important entomologists of the world in the last two centuries, leaving to posterity a huge amount of manuscripts and books. The Languedoc yellow scorpion, Buthus occitanus (Amoreaux, 1789), has been one of his objects of study: many of its behaviours, including the famous “promenade a deux”, have been described by the careful eye of the French entomologist, giving an interesting contribution to modern scorpiology

The ancient Egyptians knew the scorpion and its toxicity, and venerated it since pre-dynastic era. They used the scorpion as a king's name, a name of a nome (county), and a symbol to their goddess, Serqet, that protects the body and the viscera of the dead, and that accompanies them in their journey to the afterlife. They had medical prescriptions and magical spells to heal the stings. Since the 5th dynasty, the title of a “Follower of Serket” was given to clever physicians. Scorpions are most famously depicted on Horus Cippus, a talisman featuring Horus the Child holding in his …
Pectine Development In Scorpion Embryos And First And Second Instars, Roger D. Farley
Pectine Development In Scorpion Embryos And First And Second Instars, Roger D. Farley
Euscorpius
The pectines are complex sensory organs that extend from the ventral surface of the anterior opisthosoma (mesosoma) in all extant scorpions and nearly all the fossil scorpions that have been examined. The pectines are synapomorphic for the Order Scorpiones. In this investigation, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study the development of the pectines in representatives from five scorpion families. In the more basal families (e.g., Vaejovidae) with apoikogenic development, the pectines start to develop early with enlargement of the limb buds on the third opisthosomal segment. The primordial pectines become elongate lobes attached to the ventro-lateral surface …

Several small fragments of fossil scorpions are reported from two localities in Vologda Province, Russia, representing the Upper Permian (Severodvinian, correlated to Wuchiapingian) (Isady) and Lower Triassic just above the Permian-Triassic boundary (Induan) (Nedubrovo). Most observed structures are not diagnostic at genus or family level. The Isady leg fragment possesses ungues (claws), which are both denticulated and setaceous, and resembles a Carboniferous Eobuthus sp. (Eobuthidae). It is the latest record of this type of ungues, which are known in some Paleozoic scorpions (extinct suborder Mesoscorpiones); all extant scorpions have smooth claws without denticulation or setation.

In Situ Infrared Videography Of Sand Scorpion Nighttime Surface Activity, Douglas D. Gaffin
Euscorpius
Sand scorpions make burrows from which they emerge at night to seek mates and prey. Previous ecological studies have documented scorpion activities on the sand surface. Few studies, however, have videotaped scorpion movements in the context of understanding their sensory neurobiology. Our objective is to understand which signals guide scorpions as they emerge from and return to their burrows. Candidate stimuli include chemical trails, footsteps, celestial patterns, geomagnetic cues, humidity and/or temperature gradients, distinctive scents from the burrow, seismic echolocation, memory, or landmark orientation. We videotaped scorpions to learn whether they return to their burrows by the same path they …
