Islamic Civilization And (Western) Modernity, Peter O'Brien Oct 2011

Islamic Civilization And (Western) Modernity, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Much historiography of the last three decades has undermined the sway of Eurocentrism. Though unabashedly Eurocentric histories still become bestsellers,1 revisionists have shown that the ideas and developments that spawned modernity hardly sprang sui generis from European soil. In their historic re-awakening starting at the end of the Middle Ages that ushered in the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment, Europeans borrowed and augmented a vast array of ideas, institutions, and practices particularly from Islamic, but also Indian and Chinese, civilization.2

This article contends that such revisionism, itself now putative, does not probe searchingly enough the inter-civilizational encounter …

Intratracheal Instillation Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Induces Hepatic Toxicity In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Siva Krishna Nalabotu, Madhukar Babu Kolli, William E. Triest, Jane Y. Ma, Nandini Dpk Manne, Anjaiah Katta, Hari S. Addagarla, Kevin M. Rice, Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Background: Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles have been posited to have both beneficial and toxic effects on biological systems. Herein, we examine if a single intratracheal instillation of CeO2 nanoparticles is associated with systemic toxicity in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Methods and results: Compared with control animals, CeO2 nanoparticle exposure was associated with increased liver ceria levels, elevations in serum alanine transaminase levels, reduced albumin levels, a diminished sodium-potassium ratio, and decreased serum triglyceride levels (P < 0.05). Consistent with these data, rats exposed to CeO2nanoparticles also exhibited reductions in liver weight (P < 0.05) and dose-dependent hydropic degeneration, hepatocyte enlargement, sinusoidal dilatation, and accumulation of granular material. No histopathological alterations were observed in the kidney, spleen, and heart. Analysis of serum biomarkers suggested an elevation of acute phase reactants and markers of hepatocyte injury in the rats exposed to CeO2 nanoparticles.

Conclusion: Taken together, these data suggest that intratracheal instillation …

Profile: Nurturing The Entrepreneurial Spirit, University Relations Oct 2011

Profile: Nurturing The Entrepreneurial Spirit, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Successful entrepreneurs have an uncanny ability to envision the future, to anticipate trends even before they emerge, and to imagine things as they might be. Entrepreneurs aren’t afraid to take risks, to go out on a limb for an idea they have, even if it bucks the tide. In this edition of Profile, you will encounter examples of individuals who exhibit this entrepreneurial spirit, a disposition that characterized this institution from its very founding.

Blogging: Promoting Learner Autonomy And Intercultural Competence Through Study Abroad, Lina Lee Oct 2011

Blogging: Promoting Learner Autonomy And Intercultural Competence Through Study Abroad, Lina Lee

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

The current study explores closely how using a combined modalities of asynchronous computer-mediated communication (CMC) via blogs and face-to-face (FTF) interaction through ethnographic interviews with native speakers (L1s) supports autonomous learning as the result of reflective and social processes. The study involves 16 American undergraduate students who participated in blogs to develop their intercultural competence over the course of one-semester study abroad. The results show that blogs afforded students the opportunity to work independently (e.g., content creation) and reflect upon cross-cultural issues. Critical reflection, however, relied on the teacher’s guidance and feedback, as most of the students were cognitively challenged …

Behavioral Antitrust, Maurice Stucke, Amanda P. Reeves

Scholarly Works

Competition policy is entering a new age. Interest in competition laws has increased world-wide, and the United States no longer holds a monopoly on antitrust policy. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the question for competition authorities is whether and to what extent does bounded rationality, self-interest and willpower matter. This article explores how the behavioral economics literature will advance competition policy. With increasing interest in the United States and abroad in the implications of behavioral economics for competition policy, this Article first provides an overview of behavioral economics. It next discusses how the assumption of rational, self-interested profit …

Air Quality Standards And Oil And Gas Production In Texas: Know Your Amcvs, Andrew D. Sims, J. Zach Burt Oct 2011

Air Quality Standards And Oil And Gas Production In Texas: Know Your Amcvs, Andrew D. Sims, J. Zach Burt

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The need for America to reduce its dependence on foreign oil is heavily debated in the news today. Reducing our need for foreign oil will result in an increase in domestic production of oil and natural gas here in the United States. Those who oppose more production in the United States often use the environment as a cornerstone of their argument. In Texas, companies that drill for oil and natural gas are under the microscope, and public awareness of the environmental impacts of their operations is at an all time high. Thus, it is important for citizens, companies, attorneys, and …

Tibetan Refugees As Objects Of Development. Indian Development Philosophy And Refugee Resistance In The Establishment Of Lukzung Samdrupling, The First Tibetan Refugee Settlement In India, Jan Magnusson Oct 2011

Tibetan Refugees As Objects Of Development. Indian Development Philosophy And Refugee Resistance In The Establishment Of Lukzung Samdrupling, The First Tibetan Refugee Settlement In India, Jan Magnusson

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The paper looks at the development philosophy behind the establishment of the Lukzum Samdrupling, the first Tibetan refugee settlement in India and how it was received by the refugees. After reviewing Chinese development concepts in the 1950’s and 1960’s with an emphasis on Tibet, the paper explores the central concepts of Indian development philosophy at that time, such as cooperative, scientific farming and modern family planning, and how they were implemented in the design of Lukzum Samdrupling. Based on documents in the old settlement files the impact of various development schemes as well as resistance among the refugees are also …

Choosing Glass: Color And Impressions, Robert N. Oddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

In the last issue of Glass Craftsman, I said that, for me, the choice of glass is probably the most important factor contributing to artistry in stained glass. Tiffany’s company made glass for specific purposes, and raised the medium to a new level of expressive power. Now, we have a huge selection of stained glass available for our creative purposes. We just have to make the effort to familiarize ourselves to what is out there.

Tibetan Plateau Grassland Protection: Tibetan Herders' Ecological Conception Versus State Policies, Elisa Cencetti Oct 2011

Tibetan Plateau Grassland Protection: Tibetan Herders' Ecological Conception Versus State Policies, Elisa Cencetti

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The establishment of the “Three Rivers’ Sources Nature Reserve” in 2002 - one of China’s largest ecological protection projects - has had a major impact on the lives of Tibetan nomadic herders. This paper examines the ecological viewpoints of Tibetan herders, their conceptions of grassland protection and what they believe to be the best strategies to solve grazing problems. According to the Chinese authorities, the Nature Reserve was established to protect the grasslands, as well as the sources of China’s three major rivers – the Yellow River, the Yangtse and the Mekong. Grazing bans and flock reduction have been two …

The Great Transformation Of Tibet? Rapid Labor Transitions In Times Of Rapid Growth In The Tibet Autonomous Region, Andrew M. Fischer Oct 2011

The Great Transformation Of Tibet? Rapid Labor Transitions In Times Of Rapid Growth In The Tibet Autonomous Region, Andrew M. Fischer

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Rapid subsidy-sustained growth since the mid-1990s in the Tibetan areas of Western China has been associated with a rapid transition of the local (mostly Tibetan) labour force. In the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), for instance, the proportion of the local labour force registered as employed in farming and herding dropped from 76 percent in 1999 (the most agrarian workforce in China at the time) to 56 percent by 2008. This shift out of agriculture was mostly absorbed by rapid increases in the proportions of locals employed in services and construction. While some of this change probably reflects seasonal migratory workers …

Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin Oct 2011

Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper examines identity constructions of young and educated Tibetans from a socio-cultural background of nomadic pastoralism in Amdo. It is based on qualitative research conducted between 2003 and 2008, comparing two generations of educated young people from a township in the Amdo region of Northern Sichuan in the People’s Republic of China. It examines developments in education policies and practices as well as economic developments from 2003 to 2008 and argues that identity constructions of school students and graduates need to be analysed against the background of such changes. Conceptualisations of nomad identity are linked to nomadic pastoralism, and …

Food, Fibre And The Future : Report On Surveys Of Students’ And Teachers’ Knowledge And Understanding Of Primary Industries, Kylie Hillman, Sarah Buckley Oct 2011

Food, Fibre And The Future : Report On Surveys Of Students’ And Teachers’ Knowledge And Understanding Of Primary Industries, Kylie Hillman, Sarah Buckley

National Surveys

Primary Industry plays a vital role in Australian’s economy and society, but the gap between rural and urban communities is growing, contributing to a lack of understanding of where food and other basic necessities of life come from. The goal of the Primary Industries Education Foundation (PIEF) is to provide a source of information on primary industries for educators, to better equip students with not only knowledge about what goes into their food and fibres but also what career opportunities exist in primary industries. In 2010, PIEF contracted the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to design and conduct a …

Distance And Face-To-Face Learning Culture And Values: A Conceptual Analysis, Carmen Tejeda -Delgado, Brett J. Millan, John R. Slate Oct 2011

Distance And Face-To-Face Learning Culture And Values: A Conceptual Analysis, Carmen Tejeda -Delgado, Brett J. Millan, John R. Slate

Administrative Issues Journal

With distance learning increasing in popularity across the country and the world, a review of the extant literature as it relates to distance learning and face-to-face learning is warranted. In particular, this paper examined distance learning, including a historical overview, prevailing themes in past research, and studies relating the importance of the community concept in distance education. Also analyzed were research studies in which the importance of culture and values were addressed. Subsequently, the rationale for the development of instruments to quantify values, including the Schwartz Value Scale (SVS), was provided. Growth in online education has created an environment where …
