A Vision Of Sound: A 3d Visualization Of Pipe Organ Music, Donna Schichler Oct 2011

A Vision Of Sound: A 3d Visualization Of Pipe Organ Music, Donna Schichler

Theses

My goal is to create a 3D animation that illustrates the movements and patterns produced in the air when Bach's Chromatic Fugue is played on a pipe organ. By combining the visual element of swirling patterns inspired by pipe organ acoustics simulation with imagery that the music evokes in the mind, I aim to present a surrealistic soundscape that visually depicts the boundless creative energy and freedom of music and mind combined. I hope to create an animation that is aesthetically interesting and to inspire imagination in viewer.

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Posters and Presentations

More than 740 million people worldwide are infected with Hookworm. Hookworm infection is most prevalent in the poorest of the poor populations of the world, and has serious health effects. Hookworm infection causes blood loss leading to iron deficiency anemia and protein energy malnutrition, which results in a compromised immune response. Consequently, the target human population suffers from an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases including hookworm infection. We have developed recombinant adult hookworm vaccines against hookworm infection to break this vicious cycle. Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 agonist are known to boost immune response in healthy and immunocompromised individuals. We believe …

Africa grows many of the same crops as Kansas, including sorghum and wheat. In fact, sorghum germplasm came from Africa, and now Kansas is the No. 1 sorghum producer in the United States.

K-State has expertise in grain storage issues, wheat and grain sorghum milling, and growing crops under dryland and irrigated conditions — vital information for African producers. Faculty secure grant funding to cover travel and other expenses associated with these partnerships. As an added bonus, they bring international experience into the classroom to share with their students. International collaborations help develop networks to share research, establish new markets, …

The Irrigation Sector Shift From Construction To Modernization: What Is Required For Success?, Charles M. Burt Oct 2011

The Irrigation Sector Shift From Construction To Modernization: What Is Required For Success?, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

External pressures related to environmental protection, commodity prices, energy availability, larger populations, and climate change have combined to require an immediate and substantial improvement in agricultural irrigation performance. Worldwide progression towards modernized irrigation projects has been uneven and slower than desired, but decades of irrigation modernization development have clarified certain requirements for success, as well as illuminated indicators of project failure. Of particular importance are required shifts within the state and national irrigation bureaucracies, as well as universities.

Community Capacity Building: Supporting Military Children And Families Environmental Scan Of Extension Professional Development Opportunities For Early Childhood And School-Age Providers: Final Report, Jennifer K. Gerdes, D. Felix, Amanda Prokasky, Tonia Durden, Kathleen Lodl

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this environmental scan was to discover what professional development is offered through the Cooperative Extension System to early childhood or school age providers across the nation. A secondary focus was to assess the availability of professional development opportunities offered through the Cooperative Extension System for providers who serve children (birth–12) from military families, both on and off installation. Through this process, the strengths of Extension were highlighted and existing resources that could be replicated for use in other states were identified.

Designing An Effective Music Teacher Evaluation System (Part One), Amy Clements-Cortés Oct 2011

Designing An Effective Music Teacher Evaluation System (Part One), Amy Clements-Cortés

Music Faculty Publications

Danielson & McGreal (2000) state that an effective teacher evaluation system must contain three elements: ai) a coherent definition of the domain of teaching - "What," b2¡ techniques for assessing all aspects of teaching -"How," and c3) trained evaliiators who can make consistent judgments about performance - "Who." In part one I have examined some of the issues associated with these three areas and in part two which will appear in the next journal 1 designed present a potential music teacher evaluation system that contains these elements for the school system in Ontario, Canada. On the whole, the proposed system …

The Philosopher And The Volcano, Babette Babich Oct 2011

The Philosopher And The Volcano, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Nietzsche's Zarathustra echoes Empedocles' as orator or speaker especially if reviewed in terms of Empedocles' esoteric Katharmoi or Purifications. This essay reads Zarathustra teaching of the eternal return of the same as the teaching of going to ground, that is: death and rebirth, arguing that death is present at the start and already at work in the section entitled The Adder's Bite. Indeed it is the explicit subtext of the overman.

Like Empedocles, Nietzsche's Zarathustra tells us that the human being is something that should be overcome. and thus it makes a difference that we hear Zarathustra proclaim this teaching …

Le Zarathoustra De Nietzsche Et Le Style Parodique. A Propos De L’Hyperanthropos De Lucien Et Du Surhomme De Nietzsche, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Abstract

Nietzsche’s Übermensch is derived from Lucian of Samosata’s term hyperanthropos. I argue that Zarathustra’s teaching of the overman acquires new resonances in the context of that terminological origination in Lucian’s Kataplous — literally: sailing into port — referring to the journey of the soul into the afterlife, as escorted by Hermes and ferried by Charon along with myriads of others facing the same fate. The Kataplous he tyrannos, a title usually rendered as the Downward Journey (or The Tyrant), is a Menippean satire telling the tale of the “overman” supposed superior to others of “lesser” station in …

Keratocan Is Expressed By Osteoblasts And Can Modulate Osteogenic Differentiation, John C. Igwe, Qi Gao, Tomislav Kizivat, Ivo Kalajzic Oct 2011

Keratocan Is Expressed By Osteoblasts And Can Modulate Osteogenic Differentiation, John C. Igwe, Qi Gao, Tomislav Kizivat, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Keratocan is an extracellular matrix protein that belongs to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family which also includes the lumican, biglycan, decorin, mimecan and fibromodulin. Members of this family are known to play a role in regulating cellular processes such as proliferation and modulation of osteoprogenitor lineage differentiation. The aims of this study were to evaluate the expression pattern of the keratocan within the osteoprogenitor lineage and assess its role in regulating osteoblast maturation and function. Results from gene expression analyses of cells at different maturation stages within the osteoblast lineage indicate that keratocan is differentially expressed by osteoblasts and shows …

Morality, Mathematics, & Music Class: A Case Study Of A First Grade Vietnamese Classroom, Emma James Oct 2011

Morality, Mathematics, & Music Class: A Case Study Of A First Grade Vietnamese Classroom, Emma James

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For a Vietnamese child, first grade is their introductory gateway to society. It is the first time they will be working within a large group of people their own age, learning how to become an effective and contributing citizen to the community they’re within. Much of the first grade curriculum focuses on how students should behave not only in the classroom, but outside the school walls. This case study was conducted in the Le Loi Primary School in Hue, Vietnam. My goal was to uncover the main moral values instilled at the first grade level. For two weeks I observed …

Development Discourses On The Tibetan Plateau: Urbanization And Expropriation Of Farmland In Dartsedo, Tashi Nyima Oct 2011

Development Discourses On The Tibetan Plateau: Urbanization And Expropriation Of Farmland In Dartsedo, Tashi Nyima

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The term ‘development’ defines the Chinese official discourse on Tibet and Tibetans. The ideology of development has been articulated in relation to what development symbolically means, and how it should be practiced within the frame of representation and implementation of development projects and programs. The aim of this paper is thus to investigate what development come to mean for the grassroots community of development subjects in light of the official versus counter-official development discourses. Specifically, I examine how the relocated villagers in Kangding (Tib. Dartsedo) experience, and respond to, one official development project, namely 'New Kangding Town' construction (kangding xincheng) …

Tracking Large Carnivore Dispersal Using Isotopic Clues In Claws: An Application To Cougars Across The Great Plains, Viviane Hénaux, Larkin A. Powell, Keith A. Hobson, Clayton Kent Nielsen, Michelle A. Larue

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

1. Cougar (Puma concolor) populations, like other large carnivores, have increased during recent decades and may be recolonizing their former ranges in Midwestern North America. The dispersal routes taken by these animals from established populations are unknown and insight into these movements would facilitate their conservation and management.

2. We inferred the origin and migration route of four dispersing cougars using stable hydrogen (δD) and carbon (δ13C) isotope values along one of their claws. We compared isotopic variations within claws to regional and large-scale isoscapes of δD and δ13C values in prey species. Using …

Leading A Multi-Generational Workforce: Understanding Generational Differences For Effective Communication, Barbara J. Smyrl Oct 2011

Leading A Multi-Generational Workforce: Understanding Generational Differences For Effective Communication, Barbara J. Smyrl

Professional Projects

Today’s workforce consists of individuals from four generations each bringing different perspectives and values to the workplace. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the generational differences to gain an understanding which may help managers communicate effectively with each generational cohort. This study uses the narrative research method. Following a review of the literature on the subject of multi-generational work teams, the study tells the story of four individuals, one person from each of the four generational cohorts. Each of the individuals has experienced the phenomenon of working on a multi-generational work team. The stories shared reveal the …
