Why is it important that the future be studied? Iranian-Canadian futurist Alireza Hejazi (2009) has suggested that the study of the future moves us “from a passive or fatalistic acceptance of what may happen to an active participation in creating preferred futures.” Why should the study of the future be democratized? German-Jewish futurist Robert Jungk (1987) observed, “Most developing nations seem to accept that their future lies in catching up with the present of the developed nations…This means that it is in the power of the rich nations to define and refine the future and to propagate their images…This is …

Renewable Energy Best Practices In Promotion And Use For Latin America And The Caribbean, Andrea Luecke
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
According to the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), the number of countries with policies directed at promoting renewable energy has doubled over the past five years (REN21, 2011. The United States, along with European and Asian countries, is actively promoting renewable energy to catalyze and achieve profound economic and environmental changes. By contrast, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have been slow to adopt renewable energy because of poverty, lack of awareness, and lack of government support to mitigate climate change, stabilize energy supplies, or invest in innovation (UN Industrial Development Organization, 2011). …

Cellular abnormalities are not limited to motor neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There are numerous observations of astrocyte dysfunction in both humans with ALS and in SOD1(G93A) rodents, a widely studied ALS model. The present study therapeutically targeted astrocyte replacement in this model via transplantation of human Glial-Restricted Progenitors (hGRPs), lineage-restricted progenitors derived from human fetal neural tissue. Our previous findings demonstrated that transplantation of rodent-derived GRPs into cervical spinal cord ventral gray matter (in order to target therapy to diaphragmatic function) resulted in therapeutic efficacy in the SOD1(G93A) rat. Those findings demonstrated the feasibility and efficacy of transplantation-based …

Neonatal Vitamin A Supplementation For The Prevention Of Mortality And Morbidity In Term Neonates In Developing Countries, Batool A. Haider, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Background:Vitamin A deficiency is a major public health problem in developing countries. Vitamin A supplementation in children greater than six months of age has been found to be beneficial, with no effect of supplementation between one to five months. Supplementation in the neonatal period has been suggested to have an impact by increasing body stores in early infancy.
Objectives: To evaluate the role of vitamin A supplementation in term neonates in developing countries with respect to the prevention of mortality and morbidity.
Search strategy: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, May …

Zinc Supplementation As An Adjunct To Antibiotics In The Treatment Of Pneumonia In Children 2 To 59 Months Of Age, Batool A. Haider, Zohra S. Lassi, Amina Ahmed, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Woman and Child Health
Background:Diarrhoeal disorders and acute respiratory infections (ARIs), especially pneumonia, are the most common causes of death in low-income countries. Studies evaluating the impact of zinc supplementation as an adjunct in the management of pneumonia are limited and have shown variable results.
Objectives: To evaluate zinc supplementation, as an adjunct to antibiotics, in the treatment (clinical recovery) of pneumonia in children aged two to 59 months.
Search strategy: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 1), which contains the Cochrane Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) Group's and the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group's Specialised …

Wolbachia Infections That Reduce Immature Insect Survival: Predicted Impacts On Population Replacement, Philip R. Crain, James W. Mains, Eunho Suh, Yunxin Huang, Philip H. Crowley, Stephen L. Dobson
Entomology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: The evolutionary success of Wolbachia bacteria, infections of which are widespread in invertebrates, is largely attributed to an ability to manipulate host reproduction without imposing substantial fitness costs. Here, we describe a stage-structured model with deterministic immature lifestages and a stochastic adult female lifestage. Simulations were conducted to better understand Wolbachia invasions into uninfected host populations. The model includes conventional Wolbachia parameters (the level of cytoplasmic incompatibility, maternal inheritance, the relative fecundity of infected females, and the initial Wolbachia infection frequency) and a new parameter termed relative larval viability (RLV), which is the survival of infected larvae relative to …

Insufficient calcium intake has been proposed to cause unbalanced energy partitioning leading to obesity. However, weight loss interventions including dietary calcium or dairy product consumption have not reported changes in lipid metabolism measured by the plasma lipidome.
Methods
The objective of this study was to determine the relationships between dairy product or supplemental calcium intake with changes in the plasma lipidome and body composition during energy restriction. A secondary objective of this study was to explore the relationships among calculated macronutrient composition of the energy restricted diet to changes in the plasma lipidome, and body composition during energy restriction. Overweight …

Race To The Top Leaves Children And Future Citizens Behind: The Devastating Effects Of Centralization, Standardization, And High Stakes Accountability, Joe Onosko
Democracy & Education
President Barack Obama’s Race to the Top (RTT) is a profoundly flawed educational reform plan that increases standardization, centralization, and test-based accountability in our nation’s schools. Following a brief summary of the interest groups supporting the plan, who is currently participating in this race, why so many states voluntarily submitted proposals, and what features of the plan that are most problematic, eight arguments are offered as to why RTT is highly detrimental to our nation.

From Combat to Classroom—Students Who Serve.
Christine Dolan, Education Specialist II, Education; Nancy Kelley, Assistant Dean, College of Human Science and Services; and Daniel Ustick, Advisor, Career Services. Accustomed to a strict, rule-bound system, student veterans face unusual challenges in their transition from the rigorous regimen of a soldier to the more self-directed environment of a college student. The transition to college is often complicated when student veterans have experienced the trauma of war, or acculturation to another country. In this workshop, a panel of student veterans discusses the challenges faced when re-integrating themselves into civilian and campus life. …
