Antiurolithic Activity Of Origanum Vulgare Is Mediated Through Multiple Pathways, Aslam Khan, Samra Bashir, Saeed R. Khan, Anwar H. Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Origanum vulgare Linn has traditionally been used in the treatment of urolithiasis. Therefore, we investigated the crude extract of Origanum vulgare for possible antiurolithic effect, to rationalize its medicinal use. Methods: The crude aqueous-methanolic extract of Origanum vulgare (Ov.Cr) was studied using the in vitro and in vivo methods. In the in vitro experiments, supersaturated solution of calcium and oxalate, kidney epithelial cell lines (MDCK) and urinary bladder of rabbits were used, whereas, in the in vivo studies, rat model of urolithiasis was used for the study of preventive and curative effect. Results: In the in vitro experiments, Ov.Cr …

Anatomical Correlates To Nectar Feeding Among The Strepsirrhines Of Madagascar: Implications For Interpreting The Fossil Record, Magdalena N. Muchlinski, Jonathan M. G. Perry Oct 2011

Anatomical Correlates To Nectar Feeding Among The Strepsirrhines Of Madagascar: Implications For Interpreting The Fossil Record, Magdalena N. Muchlinski, Jonathan M. G. Perry

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

One possible ecological scenario for the origin of primates is the archaic pollination and coevolution hypothesis. Its proponents contend that the consumption of nectar by some early primates and the resulting cross-pollination is an example of coevolution that drove adaptive radiations in some primates. This hypothesis is perhaps ecologically sound, but it lacks the morphology-behavior links that would allow us to test it using the fossil record. Here we attempt to identify cranial adaptations to nectar feeding among the strepsirrhines of Madagascar in order to provide such links. Many Malagasy strepsirrhines are considered effective cross-pollinators of the flowers they feed …

A Course In Critical Thinking For Phd Students In Biomolecular Sciences And Biotechnology: Classical Experiments In Biochemistry, Carlos B. Hirschberg Oct 2011

A Course In Critical Thinking For Phd Students In Biomolecular Sciences And Biotechnology: Classical Experiments In Biochemistry, Carlos B. Hirschberg

Higher Learning Research Communications

This essay presents and discusses an eight-session seminar course designed to develop critical thinking skills in doctoral biochemistry students by exposing them to classical experiments in biochemistry. During each 2.5 session, different key topics of the discovery and development of biochemical concepts are discussed. Before each session, students are required to read the one or two classical papers. The size of the seminar course and the seating of the students are critical to make this a highly interactive environment for all students to participate in the critique and re-designing of key experiments, including control experiments, which helped formulate these classical …

Social Landscapes Of Transegalitarian Societies: An Analysis Of The Chipped Stone Artifact Assemblage From The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Citrus County, Florida, Richard William Estabrook

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The research undertaken in this dissertation was designed to explore how the institutionalized social inequalities in prehistoric Woodland society are reflected in the differences in the procurement, in the life history, and the final discard locations of the flaked chert stone tools from the Crystal River site (8CI1). The Woodland period (1000 BC to AD 1000) was a time of both stability and change in Native American society. Many of the core institutions such as subsistence, hunting and ceramic technology, and residence remained relatively constant while religious and political institutions underwent dramatic changes. This study focuses on how these social …

Design, Fabrication, And Implementation Of A Wireless, Passive Implantable Pressure Sensor Based On Magnetic Higher-Order Harmonic Fields, Ee Lim Tan, Andrew Derouin, Brandon D. Pereles, Keat Ghee Ong Oct 2011

Design, Fabrication, And Implementation Of A Wireless, Passive Implantable Pressure Sensor Based On Magnetic Higher-Order Harmonic Fields, Ee Lim Tan, Andrew Derouin, Brandon D. Pereles, Keat Ghee Ong

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A passive and wireless sensor was developed for monitoring pressure in vivo. Structurally, the pressure sensor, referred to as the magneto-harmonic pressure sensor, is an airtight chamber sealed with an elastic pressure membrane. A strip of magnetically-soft material is attached to the bottom of the chamber and a permanent magnet strip is embedded inside the membrane. Under the excitation of an externally applied AC magnetic field, the magnetically-soft strip produces a higher-order magnetic signature that can be remotely detected with an external receiving coil. As ambient pressure varies, the pressure membrane deflects, altering the separation distance between the magnetically-soft strip …

Into The Lion's Den: Joy Davidman And Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Don W. King Oct 2011

Into The Lion's Den: Joy Davidman And Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Don W. King

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Looks at Davidman’s involvement with Hollywood—her short and unlamented stint in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Junior Writer Program in 1939, and her movie reviews for the Communist Party of the USA newspaper, New Masses, in 1941–1943. Davidman’s incisive wit, impatience with any hint of phoniness, and passion for social, racial, and gender justice come through clearly in her writing.

Is A "Christian" Mystery Story Possible? Charles Williams's War In Heaven As A Generic Case Study, Sørina Higgins Oct 2011

Is A "Christian" Mystery Story Possible? Charles Williams's War In Heaven As A Generic Case Study, Sørina Higgins

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Examines War in Heaven’s radical upsetting of the detective novel norms promised in its first few paragraphs and shows how Williams uses and subverts these conventions and leads us to contemplate, instead of a mystery and its solution, an insoluble Mystery with a capital M.

Christian, Norse And Celtic: Metaphysical Belief Structures In Nancy Farmer's The Saxon Saga, Marek Oziewicz

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Introduces a young adult historical-fantasy trilogy, The Saxon Saga by Nancy Farmer, and elucidates the value of its multicultural approach in our distrustful and fragmented age. The respectful representation of three conflicting cultures in the novels—Christian, Norse, and Celtic—demonstrates to young readers that people may hold vastly different metaphysical views and yet may have many core values in common, enough to forge a relationship of mutual trust.

Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2011

Jews And Humor, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Jews and humor is, for most people, a natural and felicitous collocation. In spite of, or perhaps because of, a history of crises and living on the edge, Jews have often created or resorted to humor. But what is “humor”? And what makes certain types, instances, or performances of humor “Jewish”? These are among the myriad queries addressed by the fourteen authors whose essays are collected in this volume. And, thankfully, their observations, always apt and often witty, are expressed with a lightness of style and a depth of analysis that are appropriate to the many topics they cover. The …

Carne Viva In Postville: Stories Of Madres And Monarchs, Jennifer Cooley, Karen Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Carne viva are two words in Spanish that together can be translated various ways. Taken literally, they refer to live flesh, like an open wound. In this way they can allude to the slow process of recovery after a traumatic event. The words draw up images of enduring pain. In addition, they can be read to refer to fresh meat and in the context of human relations, to the image of a new conquest. They can also draw our thoughts to the context of a slaughterhouse, where working conditions involve constant contact with carcasses and blood, and the value of …

Exploring Complex Engineering Learning Over Time With Epistemic Network Analysis, Gina Navoa Svarovsky Oct 2011

Exploring Complex Engineering Learning Over Time With Epistemic Network Analysis, Gina Navoa Svarovsky

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Recently, K-12 engineering education has received increased attention as a pathway to building stronger foundations in math andscience and introducing young people to the profession. However, the National Academy of Engineering found that many K-12engineering programs focus heavily on engineering design and science and math learning while minimizing the development ofengineering habits of mind. This narrowly-focused engineering activity can leave young people – and in particular, girls – with a limitedview of the profession. This study describes Digital Zoo, an engineering learning environment that engaged girls in authentic engineeringactivity in order to link the development of engineering skills and knowledge …
