Identification Of Genetic And Epigenetic Risk Factors For Psoriasis And Psoratic Arthritis, Ying Liu Jan 2011

Identification Of Genetic And Epigenetic Risk Factors For Psoriasis And Psoratic Arthritis, Ying Liu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Psoriasis: PS) is a common incurable inflammatory skin disease affecting 2-3% of the European population. ~10-30% of patients develop psoriatic arthritis: PsA). Genetic variation in the major histocompatibility complex: MHC) increases risk of developing PS. However, only ~10% of individuals with this risk factor develop PS, indicating that other genetic effects and environmental triggers are important. In order to identify novel susceptibility genes of PS and PsA, I performed the first large scale genome wide association scan for psoriasis susceptibility loci using 233 cases and 519 controls. It revealed that genes of the immune system and of the barrier are …

The Social Origin Of Violent Behavior, Todd Arthur Mensink Jan 2011

The Social Origin Of Violent Behavior, Todd Arthur Mensink

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examines the social origins of extremely violent behavior. Numerous explanations of violent offenders have focused on biological, psychological, environmental or a combination of these factors to explain violence. Most explanations of violent behavior fail to take a holistic approach to understand the cause of violent behavior. This study is an analysis of the applicability of the violentization theory. Data was obtained through in-depth semi-structured interviews from six violent offenders in a residential treatment faciIity in the Midwest. Findings indicate that for most offenders, the violentization theory is consistent with their social experiences. However, two exceptions pertained to the …

Subject To Surveillance: Genocide Law As Epistemology Of The Object, Tawia Baidoe Ansah Jan 2011

Subject To Surveillance: Genocide Law As Epistemology Of The Object, Tawia Baidoe Ansah

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the discourse on genocide from two angles: the legal genesis of the term in the 1940s and subsequent legal "capture" of the concept of genocide, and a recent socio-political critique of the legal meaning of genocide. The article suggests that a cross-disciplinary critique of genocidal violence not only describes the event and the victim, but also produces knowledge of them as discursive "objects." The key issue is the "surveillance" role of the outside observer, also produced as such in discursive relation to the object. At stake in this view of genocide law as epistemology is the capacity …

Neural Mechanisms Of Interference And Storage In Vibrotactile Working Memory, Tyler D. Bancroft Jan 2011

Neural Mechanisms Of Interference And Storage In Vibrotactile Working Memory, Tyler D. Bancroft

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Vibrotactile working memory has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Substantial research into the neural correlates has been conducted, especially using single-cell paradigms in non-human primates (Romo & Salinas, 2003). The vibrotactile working memory system uses a relatively simple neural code for the representation of stimuli, making it possible to determine when stimulus information is present in the various cortical areas thought to be involved. In humans, vibrotactile working memory displays properties (such as overwriting mechanisms of interference) that make it an ideal system for testing general theories of working memory. In the present study, we demonstrate that vibrotactile working …

Cd-Induced Responses In Plasma Ionic Regulation And Oxidative Stress In Rainbow Trout (O. Mykiss) Or Lake Whitefish (C. Clupeaformis) During Chronic Waterborne Exposure, Amanda Mancini Jan 2011

Cd-Induced Responses In Plasma Ionic Regulation And Oxidative Stress In Rainbow Trout (O. Mykiss) Or Lake Whitefish (C. Clupeaformis) During Chronic Waterborne Exposure, Amanda Mancini

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

During chronic exposure to Cd or other metals, freshwater fish generally undergo physiological changes that results in acclimation, following a phase of damage and subsequent repair. The mechanisms associated with deleterious cellular effects induced by Cd throughout long-term exposures are less understood than those of acute toxicity, and may relate to an over-production of reactive oxygen species. The objectives of the present study were to examine the changes in, and relationship between, tissue-specific oxidative damage and antioxidant response, as well as plasma ionic regulation and tissue accumulation, in two freshwater salmonids throughout chronic Cd exposure. Rainbow trout (O. mykiss …

"European Copyright Code" – Back To First Principles (With Some Additional Detail), Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2011

"European Copyright Code" – Back To First Principles (With Some Additional Detail), Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

The "Wittem Group" of copyright scholars has proposed a "European Copyright Code," to "serve as an important reference tool for future legislatures at the European and national levels." Because, notwithstanding twenty years of Directives and a growing ECJ caselaw, copyright law in EU Member States continues to lack uniformity, the Wittem Group’s endeavor should be welcomed, at least as a starting point for reflection on the desirable design of an EU copyright regime. Whether or not the proposed Code succeeds in influencing national or Community legislation, it does offer an occasion to consider the nature of the rights that copyright …

"Causing The Blood To Flow Where I Touched Him" - Liberalism, Constitutionalism, Christianity, And The "War" At Covey Farm, Anthony V. Baker Jan 2011

"Causing The Blood To Flow Where I Touched Him" - Liberalism, Constitutionalism, Christianity, And The "War" At Covey Farm, Anthony V. Baker

Campbell Law Review

I will begin my critique by going directly to the source here, the famous Philadelphia Constitutional Convention of 1787, and ask us to look somewhat carefully at the work of the "founders" there, in considering the ultimate integrity of the product they fashioned and the world they "created." That they gave us a classical liberal wonder, with tenets of that philosophy writ large in government for the very first time, is undeniable, though it will be submitted that they gave us "something else" as well. It is right for us then to explore that "something else," not abstractly, through ideas, …

Moral Disengagement Among Serious Juvenile Offenders: A Longitudinal Study Of The Relations Between Morally Disengaged Attitudes And Offending, Jeffrey Fagan, Elizabeth P. Shulman, Elizabeth Cauffman, Alex R. Piquero Jan 2011

Piquero

Faculty Scholarship

The present study investigates the relation between moral disengagement – one’s willingness to conditionally endorse transgressive behavior – and ongoing offending in a sample of adolescent male felony offenders (N=1,169). In addition, the study attempts to rule out callous-unemotional traits as a third variable responsible for observed associations between moral disengagement and offending. A bivariate latent change score analysis suggests that reduction in moral disengagement helps to speed decline in self-reported antisocial behavior, even after adjusting for the potential confound of callous-unemotional traits. Declines in moral disengagement are also associated with declining likelihood of offending, based on official records. Given …

Faculty Scholarship

The paper considers some questions arising out of reflection on Finnis's writings about value, exemplifying them by consideration of the putative value of knowledge. They include the role of harmony, and of self-evidence, in identifying or constituting values, and the ways in which values can provide reasons.

The Response Of Tall Fescue And Its Fungal Endophyte To Climate Change, Glade Blythe Brosi Jan 2011

The Response Of Tall Fescue And Its Fungal Endophyte To Climate Change, Glade Blythe Brosi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Tall fescue is the most common cool-season grass in the eastern USA, with broad economic and ecological importance to the region. Tall fescue is known to associate with a fungal endophyte, Neotyphodium coenophialum, whose presence can decrease biotic and abiotic stress experienced by the plant. This thesis evaluates the response of tall fescue and the fungal endophyte symbiosis to predicted climate change. I participated in two multi-factor climate change projects where I investigated the response of tall fescue tissue chemistry and growth to various climate change factors. Endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue had decreased alkaloid production under elevated CO2 …

Part-I Characterization Of Phorbol Ester; The Predominant Toxic Component Of Jathropha Curcas And Development Of An Efficient Process For The Detoxification Of Jathropha Curcas Meal Part-Ii Quantification Of 2-Hydroxy-4-(Methylthio) Butanoic Acid And Pantothenic Acid In Bovine Serum And Sea Water Matrices, Balaji Viswanathan

Doctoral Dissertations

"Jatropha curcas is has often been touted as the most sustainable biofuel source. Jatropha curcas is a drought resistant perennial plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. Interest in this plant as a biofuel source is related to high lipid (triglyceride) content of its seeds. However, economics of jatropha as a biofuel source has been marred by the toxicity of the oil and its protein rich meal. As a result of high toxicity the protein rich meal is used only as a very low or no economic value organic fertilizer. Economic return from jatropha can be dramatically enhanced through development of …

The Role Of Viral Protein Pul21a In Human Cytomegalovirus Infection, Anthony Fehr Jan 2011

The Role Of Viral Protein Pul21a In Human Cytomegalovirus Infection, Anthony Fehr

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The double-stranded DNA virus human cytomegalovirus: HCMV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that causes severe disease in immunocompromised individuals and neonates. The biology of HCMV remains largely undefined and functions of many of the roughly 200 putative HCMV genes are still unknown. One of these genes, UL21a, was shown to be critical for efficient viral replication in two large-scale mutagenesis studies. UL21a encodes for a putative protein that is 123 amino acids and has no homology to any known proteins. The gene products of UL21a, its role during infection, and its function(s) remain undefined. Here, we characterized UL21a and demonstrated …

Spray Techniques And Lung Cancer Chemoprevention, Huijing Fu Jan 2011

Spray Techniques And Lung Cancer Chemoprevention, Huijing Fu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Chemoprevention is a promising approach to decrease the incidence of lung cancer in current and former smokers. Directly delivering drugs to the lung could lead to a high concentration in the target organ with a lower dose compared to other means of administration. The primary advantages of aerosol delivery in treating lung diseases include improving the bioavailability of the drug in the lung, decreasing the medicine dose, rapid action, and reducing the systemic toxicity as well as side effects. Spray techniques are widely used for aerosol delivery. Two spray techniques were evaluated in this study for their applications in lung …

Nonuniform Power Changes And Spatial, Temporal And Spectral Diversity In High Gamma Band (>60 Hz) Signals In Human Electrocorticography, Charles Gaona Jan 2011

Nonuniform Power Changes And Spatial, Temporal And Spectral Diversity In High Gamma Band (>60 Hz) Signals In Human Electrocorticography, Charles Gaona

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

High-gamma band: >60Hz) power changes in cortical electrophysiology are a reliable indicator of focal, event-related cortical activity. In spite of discoveries of oscillatory subthreshold and synchronous suprathreshold activity at the cellular level, there is an increasingly popular view that high-gamma band amplitude changes recorded from cellular ensembles are the result of asynchronous firing activity that yields wideband and uniform power increases. Others have demonstrated independence of power changes in the low- and high-gamma bands, but to date, no studies have shown evidence of any such independence above 60Hz. Based on non-uniformities in time-frequency analyses of electrocorticographic: ECoG) signals, we hypothesized …

The Role Of Ikkβ In Osteoclastogenesis And Inflammatory Osteolysis, Jesse Otero Jan 2011

The Role Of Ikkβ In Osteoclastogenesis And Inflammatory Osteolysis, Jesse Otero

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Bone homeostasis is essential for health and is altered in many pathological conditions. A balance in the activity of osteoblasts: bone-building cells) and osteoclasts: boneresorbing cells) determines the state of bone metabolism, and a tip in this balance toward either cell type is detrimental to health. In clinical settings, the most common bone diseases favor increased osteoclast activity and include osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Heightened osteoclast differentiation and activation in these conditions causes bone loss which results in increased fracture risk, bone pain, and deformity. Understanding the mechanisms by which osteoclasts develop will elucidate important targets for therapy in these …

Identification Of The Molecular Basis Of Morphological Variation In Avian Beaks, Kara Powder Jan 2011

Identification Of The Molecular Basis Of Morphological Variation In Avian Beaks, Kara Powder

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Vertebrates, particularly birds, show extremely variable species-specific morphology in craniofacial structures. Cranial neural crest cells give rise to all the cartilage and bone of the face, and transplantation experiments have shown that these cells contain species-specific patterning information. First, I employed custom cross-species microarrays to analyze the spectrum of developmental signaling pathway and transcription factor gene expression changes in neural crest cells of the developing beaks for the chicken, duck, and quail, both before and after morphological variation is evident. I found that neural crest cells have established a species-specific gene expression profile that predates morphological variation. In addition to …

A Paleoethnobotanical Analysis Of Three Formative Period Wankarani Sites Located In The Department Of Oruro, Bolivia, Brieanna Langlie Jan 2011

A Paleoethnobotanical Analysis Of Three Formative Period Wankarani Sites Located In The Department Of Oruro, Bolivia, Brieanna Langlie

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Wankarani people are often cited as an example of early camelid pastoralism in South America. However, research on early camelid pastoralism has ignored the importance of plants, especially the cultivation of domesticated plants in this region. The Wankarani people lived in the central altiplano of the south-central Andes during the Formative period: 2000 B.C.-A.D. 400). Previous research has assumed that the Wankarani people were cultivating domestic plants. This research explores the evidence for both wild and domesticated plant use among the Wankarani while furthering the understanding of the development of subsistence strategies of pastoralists cultures. Using paleoethnobotanical methods of …

Sustaining Voice Through Leadership: How Do Deaf Leaders Sustain Voice In Challenging Dominant Systems, Darlene Goncz Zangara Jan 2011

Sustaining Voice Through Leadership: How Do Deaf Leaders Sustain Voice In Challenging Dominant Systems, Darlene Goncz Zangara

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The vehicle in communicating cultural identity, recognition, and justice is voice. Reclaiming or sustaining one's voice is to stand up for what one believes in, or to preserve one's identity and place in society. The deaf individual or any other marginalized individual is expected to proceed through a series of deliberations to determine favorable actions that will be persuasive, with the goal of embracing the voice of the marginalized. The deaf individual's voice or meaningful intentions will need to be effectively interpreted into mainstream American society's language and paradigms. This requires one to reconstruct the meanings and mediate the facts …

Influencing Attitudes Toward People With Developmental Disabilities Using Arts Based Research, Marti Sue Goetz Jan 2011

Influencing Attitudes Toward People With Developmental Disabilities Using Arts Based Research, Marti Sue Goetz

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study was conducted given as an inquiry about influencing attitudes toward people with developmental disabilities. Because resistance to homes for people with developmental disabilities situated in typical neighborhoods is still a problem, I seek a way to better assimilate people with "different abilities" into communities. For an historical foundation, I researched literature on the marginalization of this ethnographic group-people with developmental disabilities-and defined quality of life. In establishing groundwork for choice of methodology, I elaborate on arts used for social change. Arts based research methods were used to conduct the research. I created an exhibit using objects and photographs …
