Functional Analysis Of A Midgut Proteolytic Gene In Tsetse Fly (Glossina Pallidipes) By Rna Interference, Elisha Muchunga Mugo Jan 2011

Functional Analysis Of A Midgut Proteolytic Gene In Tsetse Fly (Glossina Pallidipes) By Rna Interference, Elisha Muchunga Mugo

All Master’s Theses

Trypanosomiasis a devastating disease for human and animals in sub-Saharan Africa is transmitted via a tsetse fly (Genus: Glossina) bite. In absence of vaccine, effective and affordable drugs, the disease control relies heavily on vector control strategies because trypanosomes require an obligatory passage through the vector. Understanding the factors involved in tsetse-trypanosome interactions such as the midgut proteolytic genes that are known to be potential barriers to the initial trypanosome establishment stands to enhance vector control. However, very few in vivo studies have been undertaken to analyze such genes. The study describes functional analysis of a midgut Glossina proteolytic gene …

Molecular Phylogenetic Characterization Of Symbiotic Microbiota In The Intestinal Tracts Of Wild Lepidopteran Stem Borer Eldana Saccharina Walker (Pyralidae), James Gitari Kabii J Jan 2011

Molecular Phylogenetic Characterization Of Symbiotic Microbiota In The Intestinal Tracts Of Wild Lepidopteran Stem Borer Eldana Saccharina Walker (Pyralidae), James Gitari Kabii J

All Master’s Theses

Intestinal tracts of plant feeding insects are potentially important sources of novel biocatalysts. However, the microbial populations in these guts, especially in the Lepidoptera, are not well characterized. In this study, thirty two (32) bacterial isolates from homogenized guts of late irtstar larvae of Eldana saccharina from papyrus rhizomes and infested sugarcane stalks were assayed for their ability to utilize alpha cellulose and sugarcane bagasse as sole carbon sources. All isolates were viable for 14 days in liquid fermentation cultures. The microbial isolates were also characterized by a combination of microbiological and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In addition, microbial …

Anxiety, Knowledge And Help: A Model For How Black And White College Students Search For Hiv/Aids Information On The Internet, Kim Smith Jan 2011

Anxiety, Knowledge And Help: A Model For How Black And White College Students Search For Hiv/Aids Information On The Internet, Kim Smith

The Qualitative Report

Using the "think aloud" protocol, which allows for the collection of data in real time, the researcher audio taped comments from 13 white college students from a predominately white university in the Southeastern United States and 15 black students from a predominately black university, as they explained how they searched for HIV/AIDS information on the Internet. A grounded theory analysis of the tapes revealed a three-stage model that students progressed through as they searched for HIV/AIDS information on the Internet. That model also revealed that all of the white students searched for general information about HIV/AIDS on the Internet, while …

How-To Data Collection Series: The Evolution Of The Focused Discussion Group: From Non-Participant To One Of The Crew, José Luis Calderón Jan 2011

How-To Data Collection Series: The Evolution Of The Focused Discussion Group: From Non-Participant To One Of The Crew, José Luis Calderón

The Qualitative Report

This article is part of The Weekly Qualitative Report's occasional series on "How-To Collect Qualitative Data." The qualitative data collection method described is that of focused discussion groups (FDG's). This method involves the moderator, or scripter as is the preferred term in focused discussion groups, to move beyond that of a non-participant data collector to that of an engaged participant-observer, observer-participant who is willing to get into the discussion with the participants and to provide accurate information to them while prodding them to discuss the topic in increasingly personally meaningful ways. Focused discussion groups are particularly helpful for working with …

Defense Of The Constitutionality Of Health Care Reform, Gillian E. Metzger Jan 2011

Defense Of The Constitutionality Of Health Care Reform, Gillian E. Metzger

Faculty Scholarship

Along with the others, I want to thank David for organizing this panel. The great advantage of going last is that the terms of the debate over the Affordable Care Act's constitutionality have been established by the other panelists. As a result, I am going to target my remarks on a few key points, rather than walk through a full dress review of some of the arguments. Like the others, my focus is on existing doctrine. I completely agree with Dean Chemerinsky in thinking that the Supreme Court is not going to change the key parameters of existing analysis, but …

Inclusive Constitutional Comparison: Reflections On India's Sodomy Decision, Madhav Khosla Jan 2011

Inclusive Constitutional Comparison: Reflections On India's Sodomy Decision, Madhav Khosla

Faculty Scholarship

Recent years have witnessed an outpouring of literature evaluating whether judges should refer to foreign law in resolving domestic legal disputes. A range of theories now posit constitutional comparison, outlining its benefits and highlighting its promise. Yet the support for such a practice is deeply qualified; comparative scholars narrowly limit the nations that should be considered while performing comparative study. This essay in comparative law theory reflects upon India's recent sodomy decision, Naz Foundation v. Government of NCT of Delhi, to evaluate which countries should be part of the comparative law project. In Naz, the Delhi High Court …

Identification Of Genetic And Epigenetic Risk Factors For Psoriasis And Psoratic Arthritis, Ying Liu Jan 2011

Identification Of Genetic And Epigenetic Risk Factors For Psoriasis And Psoratic Arthritis, Ying Liu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Psoriasis: PS) is a common incurable inflammatory skin disease affecting 2-3% of the European population. ~10-30% of patients develop psoriatic arthritis: PsA). Genetic variation in the major histocompatibility complex: MHC) increases risk of developing PS. However, only ~10% of individuals with this risk factor develop PS, indicating that other genetic effects and environmental triggers are important. In order to identify novel susceptibility genes of PS and PsA, I performed the first large scale genome wide association scan for psoriasis susceptibility loci using 233 cases and 519 controls. It revealed that genes of the immune system and of the barrier are …

The Social Origin Of Violent Behavior, Todd Arthur Mensink Jan 2011

The Social Origin Of Violent Behavior, Todd Arthur Mensink

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examines the social origins of extremely violent behavior. Numerous explanations of violent offenders have focused on biological, psychological, environmental or a combination of these factors to explain violence. Most explanations of violent behavior fail to take a holistic approach to understand the cause of violent behavior. This study is an analysis of the applicability of the violentization theory. Data was obtained through in-depth semi-structured interviews from six violent offenders in a residential treatment faciIity in the Midwest. Findings indicate that for most offenders, the violentization theory is consistent with their social experiences. However, two exceptions pertained to the …
