Ubps Unraveled: Genetic Characterization Of Three Ubiquitin Specific Protease Subfamilies In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Crystal M. Goldyn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the function of three ubiquitin specific protease subfamilies (UBP15-19, UBP12/13 and UBP3/4) in Arabidopsis thaliana via reverse genetic analysis. In the investigation of the UBP15-19 subfamily, T-DNA insertion lines were utilized to determine phenotypic characteristics compared to wild-type individuals, such as reduced inflorescence, leaf, flower and silique size. Phenotypic alterations were also detected that affected development and reproduction. A phylogenetic analysis of this subfamily uncovered three subgroups in the monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, but a single group in the mosses suggested that subgroup evolution began prior to the separation of dicots and monocots but following the divergence …

Investigation Of Particulate Matter Size Distribution And Concentration During Low Temperature Combustion, Ramamoorthy Balakrishnan
Investigation Of Particulate Matter Size Distribution And Concentration During Low Temperature Combustion, Ramamoorthy Balakrishnan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stringent emissions regulations imposed by US EPA on diesel engine manufacturers have shifted the focus towards development and implementation of in-cylinder emissions reduction strategies. In order to simultaneously achieve low oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, along with high thermal efficiencies, advanced combustion concepts, such as low temperature combustion (LTC), have been identified as promising approaches. Furthermore, fuel properties, such as cetane number (CN) have been known to critically affect the combustion process and hence exhaust emissions.;The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of LTC on PM size distribution and number concentration for …

Relationships Between Snake River Paleofloods, Occupational Patterns And Archaeological Preservation At Redbird Beach Archaeological Site In Lower Hells Canyon, Idaho, Tabitha Trosper
All Master's Theses
The Snake River basin drains 282,000 km2 of the northwestern U.S. and is the largest tributary to the Columbia River. Redbird Beach, an archaeological site located in the lower Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River, contains extensive vertical exposures of archaeological materials interbedded with Snake River flood sediments. Redbird Beach formed in the lee of the Redbird Creek debris fan, is composed of interfingering deposits from large floods on the Snake River and locally-derived alluvial sediments from Redbird Creek. Through stratigraphic analyses of slackwater deposits, this study compares the temporal and spatial patterns of human occupation at Redbird …
Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor
Cooking Up A Nation: Food, Culture, And Identity In The Early American Republic, Karen Anne Bailor
All Master's Theses
Post-Revolutionary American food, common and genteel, acted as both a construct of and contributor to the development of an American national identity as well as a national culinary identity. From 1796 and into the early nineteenth century, Americans actively strove to distinguish themselves from their British backgrounds. As a result, the public discourse of American food shifted to reflect new values of simplicity and equality. Additionally, a new American cuisine began to take shape which embraced native crops, linking those who consumed them to the American soil, and ultimately, the new nation. Through the presence of particular dishes at politically …
Understanding The Development Of Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels, Rajendra Fernando Sawh Martinez
Understanding The Development Of Tissue Engineered Blood Vessels, Rajendra Fernando Sawh Martinez
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. In the United States alone, the American Heart Association estimates the cost of treating CVD in 2009 to be $475.3 billion. Suitable autologous blood vessels are often scarce, especially for patients who require multiple procedures. There is a global demand for improved, biocompatible vascular conduits to address these shortcomings. Biodegradable tubular scaffolds are currently being evaluated as vascular grafts in the surgical treatment of cardiovascular disease. Seeding scaffolds with bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMCs) prior to implantation has been shown to significantly improve outcomes. However, the role these cells …

Aboriginal Title In The Canadian Legal System: The Story Of Delgamuukw V. British Columbia, Robert T. Anderson
Aboriginal Title In The Canadian Legal System: The Story Of Delgamuukw V. British Columbia, Robert T. Anderson
Chapters in Books
Canada is grappling with legal issues surrounding indigenous property rights on a scale not seen in the United States since the mid-nineteenth century. Fundamental questions of fairness and justice related to indigenous peoples’ property rights are in flux in the province of British Columbia–an area the size of the states of California, Oregon, and Washington combined. The recognition of aboriginal rights in the Canadian Constitution in 1982 and recent judicial developments made it clear to the provincial government that nearly the entire province may be subject to aboriginal title claims. Consequently, the aboriginal nations and B.C. government have embarked on …

What Lies Beneath, Mary Hood
What Lies Beneath, Mary Hood
Honors Theses
With “What Lies Beneath,” I attempt to illustrate, through a series of poems, an exploration of the subjects, images, and emotions that have colored my experience both at Bucknell and my home in North Carolina for the past four years. A large portion of the collection, however, does not address the more tangible elements of my life but rather the corners of my imagination, my dreamscape, and the absences that influence them.
The Role Of Broad In Determining Neuronal Composition In The Drosophila Brain, Alper Dincer
The Role Of Broad In Determining Neuronal Composition In The Drosophila Brain, Alper Dincer
Honors Theses
To elucidate the individual roles of the four Broad-Complex (BR-C) isoforms, Z1-Z4, on neuronal composition in the mushroom body, I undertook a series of overexpression experiments and created tools for knockdown experiments. Specifically, I imaged and analyzed Drosophila brains from earlier experiments in which BR-C isoforms Z1 and Z3 were individually overexpressed in the MB. The knockdown experiments required the creation of the molecular tools necessary for isoform-specific RNA interference (RNAi). For these I performed PCR to amplify DNA sequences unique to each isoform and inserted those into the pWIZ vector, which will permit expression of loopless hairpin double stranded …

Modal Retributivism: A Theory Of Sanctions For Attempts And Other Criminal Wrongs, Anthony M. Dillof
University of Richmond Law Review
Rather than building the case for modal retributivism from the ground up, this article takes the existing components of retributive thought and reassembles them into a sounder structure. The cogency of the argument against harm-based retributivism andthe appeal of modal retributivism will likely be strongest forthose who allow reason, as opposed to intuition, a leading role in resolving moral issues.

As an historian, I’m struck by the emphasis this documentary places on non-humans – be it animals, plants, soil, or mountains – although as a native of Appalachia, that doesn’t surprise me. The film is billed as “America’s first environmental history series: and as such, it gives us a bold, unique template of how to talk holistically about the concept of place and the specific place of Appalachia. While it may be particularly prescient to talk about the broader concept of place through ecology and other facets when analyzing the history of Appalachia, surely it is no less important when …

The date is November 13, 2012.1 Just mere days ago, I received the invitation of a lifetime. Last night, I arrived in Washington, D.C. I am staying in the Hay-Adams Hotel on the third floor. I still cannot believe the extent of my life's journey. I have just been summoned to the White House by second term President-elect Barack Obama, who defeated Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for President on November 6, 2012. The 2012 Presidential Election was a hard-fought battle between Barack Obama on the Democratic side, and Mitt Romney on Republican side. The election was a like the …

Repugnant Aboriginality: Leanne Howe’S Shell Shaker And Indigenous Representation In The Age Of Multiculturalism, Monika Siebert
Repugnant Aboriginality: Leanne Howe’S Shell Shaker And Indigenous Representation In The Age Of Multiculturalism, Monika Siebert
English Faculty Publications
Surprisingly for a novel evidently invested in representations of contemporary Choctaw traditionalism as a viable alternative to settler society, LeAnne Howe’s 2001 Shell Shaker gives unrelenting play to the gruesomeness, horror even, of the traditional rituals it depicts, at the risk of reinforcing stereotypes of Indian savagery. And yet, these depictions of the repugnant, that is, of ancient practices now prohibited by law or found reprehensible by a public sense of ethics, allow Howe to escape the integrative thrust of contemporary multiculturalism by pre-emptying identification through difference, an interpretive logic according to which we are all the same because we …
Efficacy Of Fixed Infrared Thermography For Identification Of Subjects With Influenza-Like Illness, Christopher M. Hinnerichs
Efficacy Of Fixed Infrared Thermography For Identification Of Subjects With Influenza-Like Illness, Christopher M. Hinnerichs
Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation
Due to pandemic threats and the occurrence of biological terrorism, technological advancements are being vetted, developed, and implemented as part of surveillance systems and tools. A potential surveillance tool is infrared thermography (IRT), and its efficacy for screening was the focus of this dissertation. IRT-screened participants' temperatures were compared to laboratory diagnostics to confirm the presence or absence of influenza-like illness (ILI). An archival dataset of personnel on United States Navy and Marine vessels that were identified as exceeding an ILI threshold limit provided the data for the 320 study participants. Using a guiding thermo-science framework, derived from past IRT …
Analytical Investigation Of Squeeze Film Dampers, Mehmet Murat Altuğ Biҫak
Analytical Investigation Of Squeeze Film Dampers, Mehmet Murat Altuğ Biҫak
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Squeeze film damping effects naturally occur if structures are subjected to loading situations such that a very thin film of fluid is trapped within structural joints, interfaces, etc. An accurate estimate of squeeze film effects is important to predict the performance of dynamic structures.
Starting from linear Reynolds equation which governs the fluid behavior coupled with structure domain which is modeled by Kirchhoff plate equation, the effects of nondimensional parameters on the damped natural frequencies are presented using boundary characteristic orthogonal functions. For this purpose, the nondimensional coupled partial differential equations are obtained using Rayleigh-Ritz method and the weak formulation, …
