This research report investigates the morphological processes used in forming neologisms found in the Malaysian English media. The morphological processes adopted in this study are based on Murray’s (1995) list: affixation, compounding, reduplication, conversion, borrowing, acronymy, clipping, blending, onomatopaeia and antonomasia. 70 Neologisms are selected from The Edge weekly and their word classes are analysed from a quantitative approach. The classification of the samples is based on their contextual meaning in the source (The Edge weekly newspaper). The morphological processes of the samples collected are analyzed qualitatively. Isu pemantauan dan penguatkuasaan produk halal di Malaysia termasuklah berkenaan dengan penyalahgunaan, penyelewengan dan pemalsuan logo halal menarik perhatian masyarakat Malaysia. Isu perundangan halal dan bidang kuasa penguatkuasaan turut timbul setelah diuar-uarkan tentang agensi berkaitan seperti Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) yang hanya mempunyai kuasa terhad dalam pemantauan pensijilan halal sedangkan agensi itulah yang diberi kuasa untuk mengeluarkan pensijilan halal. Bone china adalah produk porselin yang mengandungi abu tulang (bone ash), kaolin, dan Cornish stone. Campuran ketiga-tiga bahan ini menghasilkan bone china yang amat berkualiti. Adanya abu tulang haiwan dalam produk bone china menimbulkan keraguan masyarakat Islam terhadap kehalalan penggunaannya. Produk-produk yang berasaskan haiwan sememangnya banyak menimbulkan keraguan. Hal ini kerana ia bersangkutan kepada dua perkara yang utama, iaitu jenis haiwan yang disembelih dan cara penyembelihan haiwan tersebut. Ten microsatellite loci (Mbr-1, Mbr-3, Mbr-4, Mbr-5, Mbr-7, Mbr-8, Mbr-10a, Mbr-10b, UVC-807 and UVC-817) were used to assess the genetic diversity and makeup of different populations of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Malaysia. A total of 120 individuals from four hatcheries and 116 individuals from four wild populations were studied. The samples were Sarawak River (SRWK), Terengganu River (TRGN), Timun River (NSBL), Kedah River (KDH), Thailand (THAI), National Prawn Fry Production and Research Centre (NAPFRE), Mun‟s Aquaculture (HatA) and Wong‟s Aquaculture (HatB). The utilization of paper mill sludge as adsorbent for removal of phosphates from aqueous solution has been investigated. The influences of experimental condition such as pH of solution, amount of adsorbent and initial concentration of phosphate were studied in detail. The adsorption of phosphate was pH dependant and adsorption process being more efficient in the basic pH region and maximum at pH 12. The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics of paper mill sludge were studied. It shows that the Langmuir model is better in describing the adsorption isotherm process compared to Freundlich. Diversity Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria Associated With Slope Grass Axonopus Compressus / Alazhar Hassin, Hassin Alazhar

Vegetation cover, especially grasses, is proven to have a significant contribution for slope stabilization. Nitrogen fixing bacteria supply some amounts of nitrogen (N) required by slope grasses for proper growth and development. In this study, three slopes were chosen based on their soil strengths namely slope A (130-140 kPa), B (80-100 kPa) and C (50-70 kPa). This study showed that the more stable slopes will also have a lower soil saturation level. There was a positive relationship between sizes of bacterial populations with soil saturation level (r2 = 0.60, p<0.05). Similar correlations were also observed between soil shear strength with soil saturation levels ( r2 = 0.58, p<0.05) as well. Culturable nitrogen-free living bacteria were isolated and enumerated from roots of Axonopus compressus, a slope grass using Burk’s nitrogen-free medium. The diversity of free-living nitrogen fixing bacteria was initially determined by the REPPCR and ERIC-PCR fingerprinting method. Results indicated that REP-PCR give better variable. Hence, the method was used throughout the study. Dendograms were constructed from REP-PCR profiles of a total of 31 strains. The cluster analysis indicated that the diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria on the grass roots was quite high and closely related among the population. The information about the presence of nitrogen-free fixing bacteria will greatly assist future management of vegetation to stabilise slopes.

In this work, N-Phthaloylchitosan (PhCh) was first synthesized via phthaloylation using chitosan. The structure of PhCh has been confirmed using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. From FTIR spectroscopy, characteristic peaks of phthalimido and aromatic group from PhCh are observed at 1772, 1708, and 719 cm-1 respectively while 1H NMR spectrum shows two sets of peaks centered at 3.0 and 7.5 ppm verifying that chitosan has been phthaloylated. The presence of the bulky phthalimido groups in PhCh results in the reduction of inter- and intramoleculear hydrogen bonds of the chitosan, resulting in solubility in some organic solvents such as DMF, DMSO, …
