Optimized Identification Of Fecal Pollution Sources In A Rural Tidal Watershed In Coastal New Hampshire, Sana B. Hussain Jan 2011

Optimized Identification Of Fecal Pollution Sources In A Rural Tidal Watershed In Coastal New Hampshire, Sana B. Hussain

Master's Theses and Capstones

Escherichia coli ribotyping was used to identify fecal contamination sources in Grommet Creek- a tidal creek that drains into Great Bay and contaminates shellfishing beds. Water samples were collected during late summer through late fall. Fecal samples were collected to establish a local source species database. Fecal indicator bacteria were enumerated from water samples and ribotyping was conducted by using EcoR1 restriction enzyme digestion and an automated RiboPrinter(c). There was consistent relative abundance between source types with wild animals and birds as the primary sources. An optimized approach for maximizing source identification involved using a 90% similarity threshold and prioritizing …

Assessing Innovative Zero-Valent Iron Separation Processes In An Arsenic Treatment Scheme, Nathan H. Little Jan 2011

Assessing Innovative Zero-Valent Iron Separation Processes In An Arsenic Treatment Scheme, Nathan H. Little

Master's Theses and Capstones

Arsenic contamination in drinking water is a worldwide public health concern associated with serious acute and chronic health effects. Listed as a "Group A" human carcinogen, arsenic is regulated in drinking water at 0.010 mg/L by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Arsenic contamination stems from both natural and anthropogenic sources, and areas with high levels of arsenic can be found in countries throughout the world, including the United States (Smedley and Kinniburgh 2002). In the past decade, interest in iron-based sorbents, particularly zero-valent iron (ZVI), has developed for their use as an arsenic-removal technique due to the lack of …

Individual Differences In Updating Information During Reading, Kristina L. Steiner Jan 2011

Individual Differences In Updating Information During Reading, Kristina L. Steiner

Master's Theses and Capstones

Causal information has been shown to help readers update outdated information (Rapp and Kendeou, 2007, 2009). Outdating occurs when integrating new information produces a conflict with encoded information that was encountered earlier in the text. There are also a number of individual differences among readers that influence how successful they will be at encoding, integrating, and outdating information including their reading skill, working memory capacity, and domain knowledge. This thesis examines how these individual differences impact how readers utilize causal information during updating. Across three experiments, participants were indexed as less-skilled or skilled readers using the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test. Experiments …

Toward An Environmental Conservatism, Terri S. Winters Jan 2011

Toward An Environmental Conservatism, Terri S. Winters

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Evangelical Climate Initiative (ECI) argues that climate change is real and human-induced and represents a moral challenge for Christians to which an urgent response is required. The ECI demonstrates that there is common ground between conservatism and environmentalism. The actions of the ECI fit within an "environmental conservatism" whose elements have historical precedence. We find the seeds of parallel ideas in the writings of the Southern Agrarians in the 1920s and 1930s---ideas that were brought to full flower by Richard Weaver, an important figure in the development of a post-World War II traditional conservatism. We also find a similar …

Arctic Ambitions The Photographs Of The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition Of 1881--1884 George W Rice Photographer, Geoffrey E. Clark

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881--1884 to the polar arctic was one of the first U.S. government sponsored foreign expeditions to incorporate the new medium of photography. The official photographer George W. Rice produced over one hundred images recording the progress of the project, including the landscape, scientific work, artifacts and indigenous people. These served multiple functions of acquisition, publicity and propaganda to promote the American program of expanding its sphere of influence beyond the borders of the United States. This thesis is the first complete catalog of the Rice photographs, drawn from all of the known collections, annotated …

The Human-Animal Bond And Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Melissa White Jan 2011

The Human-Animal Bond And Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Melissa White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Early into the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, reports revealed that less than half of individuals displaying symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder sought help from the mental health community. As a means to cope with the stresses of war, many soldiers turned to animals for emotional support, and anecdotal reports identified reduction in the severity of distress among soldiers. However, no study was found that investigates this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of service members with combat-related posttraumatic stress symptoms and the human-animal bond. The study applied a blend of constructivism and phenomenology to …

The Relationship Between Cell Phone Use And Identity Theft, Lewis O. Saunders Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Cell Phone Use And Identity Theft, Lewis O. Saunders

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The growth of mobile phone use has paralleled increased reports of identity theft. Identity theft can result in financial loss and threats to a victim's personal safety. Although trends in identity theft are well-known, less is known about individual cell phone users' attitudes toward identity theft and the extent to which they connect it to cell phone use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how cell phone use is affected by attitudes toward privacy and identity theft. The study was based on social impact theory, according to which people's attitudes and behavior are affected by the strength …

Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer Jan 2011

Regionalism, Geography, And The International Legal Imagination, Carl Landauer

Chicago Journal of International Law

Despite international law's identity as focused on spatial relations, it has long been dominated by a temporal, narrative imagination. This article argues for an increased spatial conception of international law, but one that is also culturally and temporally enriched. It begins with a section called "Regionalism without the Region," which describes how efforts at emphasizing the region in international law are often empty of regional content-that is, of true locality. Then, in a section on "GlobaliZation without the Globe," the article describes how globaliZation studies have focused on globaliZation as a process-that is, on the "ization" rather than the "globe" …

Joint Intentions To Commit International Crimes, Jens David Ohlin Jan 2011

Joint Intentions To Commit International Crimes, Jens David Ohlin

Chicago Journal of International Law

The following article is an attempt to provide a coherent theory that international tribunals may use to ground the imposition of vicarious liability for collective crimes. Currently, the case law and the literature is focused on a debate between the Joint Criminal Enterprise JCE) doctrine applied by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the co-perpetration doctrine applied by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which defines co-perpetrators as those who have joint control over the collective crime. The latter doctrine, influenced by German criminal law theory, has recently won many converts, both in The Hague and in …

Positive Youth Development Among Latino/A Youth In A Service Learning Program, Christopher Fox Drescher Jan 2011

Positive Youth Development Among Latino/A Youth In A Service Learning Program, Christopher Fox Drescher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the potential of a service-learning program to cultivate positive developmental strengths among Latino/a youth participating in a school-based program in Los Angles County. Youth (N=112) in grades 5–12, who were primarily from low SES backgrounds, participated in an environmental and humanitarian education program, the Jane Goodall Institute's, Roots & Shoots (R&S) program. Three positive youth development (PYD) variables, including civic responsibility, ethnic identity, and connection to nature were assessed before and after participation. Challenges in program implementation and data collection resulted in a small subset of participants that completed measures at the pre and posttest (n = …

Korsgaard On Reason And The Normativity Of Rationality, Robert Colin English Jan 2011

Korsgaard On Reason And The Normativity Of Rationality, Robert Colin English

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Korsgaard (2009) argues, against Kolodny (2005) and Broome (2007), that rational requirements are in fact normative. In her view the normativity of rational requirements is a function of their constitutive role in the deliberative activity of reason. After surveying the treatment of this question in the relevant literature, I explain Korsgaard's theory using pure constructivism as a framing device. I then argue that not only is her account of deliberative reason as an activity unsatisfactory (specifically, it fails to defeat the intuition that charges of boot-strapping are deeply problematic, and makes the adoption of reasons for belief from the deliberative …

The Trauma Of Post-Empire: Review Of Serguei Oushakine’S The Patriotism Of Despair, Maya Nadkarni Jan 2011

The Trauma Of Post-Empire: Review Of Serguei Oushakine’S The Patriotism Of Despair, Maya Nadkarni

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works

Trade, Time, And The Calculus Of Risk In Early Pacific Travel Writing, Michelle Burnham Jan 2011

Trade, Time, And The Calculus Of Risk In Early Pacific Travel Writing, Michelle Burnham

English

In the 2005 Common-place issue on early America and the Pacific, historians Edward Gray and Alan Taylor observe that the Atlantic studies paradigm, which moves "beyond nations and states as the defining subjects of historical understanding, turning instead to large scale processes" is also particularly "useful for understanding Pacific history" since "dis- ease, migration, trade, and war effected [sic] the Pacific in much the way they effected [sic] the Atlantic." A similar transfer of the Atlantic world model to the Pacific informs David Igler s insistence that, like the Atlantic, the Pacific world was "international before it became national."1 Igler …

The Perfect Room: Preferences In A Therapeutic Environment, Molly Sharp Jan 2011

The Perfect Room: Preferences In A Therapeutic Environment, Molly Sharp

Theses & ETDs

Preferences for control and naturalness in a therapeutic environment were examined. Specifically, preferences for seating arrangements, presence/absence of windows, presence/absence of natural objects, and presence/absence of status symbols were explored. Participants responded that they prefer to have moderate control and high naturalness in the counseling environment, with high consensus among participants. The exception to this consensus was that clients and non-clients preferences differed slightly, with a higher percentage of clients preferring the room depicting moderate control and high naturalness than non-clients. The results suggest that control and naturalness are important in the therapeutic setting, and most people have similar preferences …

Making Slavery History: Abolitionism And The Politics Of Memory In Massachusetts, W. Caleb Mcdaniel

Civil War Book Review

Exploring the Intersection of Memory and History

On October 4, 1859, abolitionist lecturer Wendell Phillips came not to praise Daniel Webster, but to bury him again. Though Webster had died in 1852, he still lived in infamy among abolitionists for having endorsed the Fugitive Slave Law ....

Investigating The Influence Of Langerhans Cells On Keratinocyte Proliferative Response To Chemical And Ultraviolet B (Uvb) Exposure, Kseniya Golubets Jan 2011

Investigating The Influence Of Langerhans Cells On Keratinocyte Proliferative Response To Chemical And Ultraviolet B (Uvb) Exposure, Kseniya Golubets

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Initially, the Girardi lab demonstrated that LC facilitate chemical carcinogenesis by showing lower levels of proliferation in LC-deficient (Langerin-diptheria toxin A transgenic) mice relative to LC-intact littermate controls. Thus, we sought to explore the breadth of potential influences of LC on keratinocyte responses (hypertrophy, apoptosis, and clonal expansion) in two classic models of carcinogenesis (chemical and UVB), by using immunohistochemical (IHC) and immunofluorescent (IF) methods of cell identification. At baseline, LC-deficient compared to LC-intact mouse skin showed comparable proliferation levels as measured by Ki-67 IHC (13.6±2.6 vs 12.7±2.8 Ki-67+ cells, NS) and epidermal thickness (7.9±1.8 vs 6.9±2.8 micrometers, NS). After …

Getting Real About Legal Realism, New Legal Realism And Clinical Legal Education, Katherine R. Kruse Jan 2011

Getting Real About Legal Realism, New Legal Realism And Clinical Legal Education, Katherine R. Kruse

Scholarly Works

Jerome Frank’s call for a “clinical lawyer-school” is cited so frequently in clinical scholarship that it borders on the canonical. Like many calls for reform in legal education, Frank’s plea for clinical lawyer-schools was based on a critique of the appellate case method of legal instruction. However, unlike most critiques, the legal realist critique was embedded within a jurisprudential challenge to the meaning of law itself, arising from American Legal Realism. Running through legal realist jurisprudence was a distinction between the “law in books” and the “law in action,” with the idea that law is not found primarily in statutes …
