The Socio-Economic And Religious Aspects In Robinson Crusoe, Alexandra G. Macy Jan 2011

The Socio-Economic And Religious Aspects In Robinson Crusoe, Alexandra G. Macy

CMC Senior Theses

In the novel, Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe examines a wide range of complex issues. Defoe takes the typical adventure theme and transforms it into a thought-provoking reflection of many issues involving society. A blending of economic and religious issues is created by first focusing on economy, then bringing the issue of religion in, and finally allowing for the portrayal of the interpenetration between each. Defoe proves that it is possible to live by economic practices and monetary values while still maintaining a good, moral character. The emphasis on economic issues is extremely apparent, as Defoe calls into question the concept …

Overcoming The Obstacles To Sustainability In Ghana, Ashley M. Scott Jan 2011

Overcoming The Obstacles To Sustainability In Ghana, Ashley M. Scott

CMC Senior Theses

For several decades following its independence from Great Britain, Ghana’s policies continued to promote over-extraction of natural resources to the detriment of its economy and rural communities.  Agricultural and forestry policy has gradually evolved to foster more sustainable and equitable practices, as in building partnerships with the private sector to fund infrastructure improvements.  Policy has recently recognized the dire need to adopt agricultural practices and means of forest resource extraction that are compatible with ecological stewardship.  However, many shortcomings are still apparent.  Large logging operations completely disregard forestry regulations with impunity, whereas rural sustenance extractors are severely punished in the …

Reception Of Marxism In 20th Century Russia, Aleksandr Grabovskiy Jan 2011

Reception Of Marxism In 20th Century Russia, Aleksandr Grabovskiy

CMC Senior Theses

In my thesis I will study how the revolutionary philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels was received and interpreted by early 20th century Russian intellectuals in an attempt to reconcile orthodoxy with the real conditions present in Russia. Through analysis of documents spanning several decades of debate, I will trace the evolution of this discussion to unlock the logic that led to philosophy put to action in the form of revolution. Finally, I will evaluate how this logic fits into the historic trajectory described by Marxism.

The Characterization Of Genes Involved In Response To The Phenol Derivative And Xenoestrogen Bisphenol-A In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sasha N. Farina Jan 2011

The Characterization Of Genes Involved In Response To The Phenol Derivative And Xenoestrogen Bisphenol-A In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Sasha N. Farina

CMC Senior Theses

Bisphenol A is an estrogenic compound that is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins; humans are continuously exposed to the compound and it is believed to possess the same carcinogenic effects as estrogen (Iso, 2006). In this study, I used Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism to identify mechanisms by which BPA acts based on the genomic profiling of kinase genes from a Mat-α haploid deletion library. Kinases regulate many other proteins, so the identification of a single mutant could identify an entire affected pathway of genes. I conducted a systematic screen of these mutants using the phenotype of …

Rhetorical Weapons: The Social And Psychological Influences Of Language And Labeling In Instances Of Genocide, Emma C. Jones Jan 2011

Rhetorical Weapons: The Social And Psychological Influences Of Language And Labeling In Instances Of Genocide, Emma C. Jones

CMC Senior Theses

It is difficult to understand why genocide continues to occur, even when the international community pledges never to let it happen in the future. Techniques such as moral disengagement and dehumanization have consistently resulted in genocide. These techniques can be greatly amplified through the careful use of language and labeling. The purpose of this paper is to examine the roles that language and labeling play in genocide. Social and psychological influences that use language will be investigated through the examination of the Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide and the Rwandan genocide. These influences are many times unintentionally or unknowingly exercised and …

Exploring The Flynn Effect: A Comprehensive Review Of The Causal Debate, Abby J. Trimble Jan 2011

Exploring The Flynn Effect: A Comprehensive Review Of The Causal Debate, Abby J. Trimble

CMC Senior Theses

Since its discovery in 1984, psychological investigators have continued to explore the Flynn Effect, the phenomenon of consistent and secular IQ gains within industrialized nations approximating 0.3 points per year. The most contentious debate within this field of research surrounds the purported cause of the Effect, and yet the research literature lacks a synthesis of the leading causal theories and the evidence supporting them. The principal hypothesized causal mechanisms – psychometric artifact, educational intervention, environmental changes, nutrition, genetics, gene-environment interaction model, medical improvements, and the multiplicity hypothesis – are reviewed and analyzed within the larger breadth of Flynn Effect scholarly …

The Weight Of Words: Discourse, Power And The 19th Century Prostitute, Yoshan A. Kennedy-Churnac Jan 2011

The Weight Of Words: Discourse, Power And The 19th Century Prostitute, Yoshan A. Kennedy-Churnac

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis discusses discourses surrounding the urban prostitute in mid-nineteenth century Paris and London. During the nineteenth century, sexuality became a topic of increasing concern and an outpouring of literature on deviant sexuality and ways to regulate it appeared from moral commentators, social scientists, and physicians. Different historical moments saw the prevalence of different approaches taken, whether it was through the moral counsel of religious pamphlets, or through the methodological approach implemented by medical journals and social surveys. My study will trace the evolution of sexual discourses on prostitutes as well as how their authors influenced attempts to regulate these …

Community In Exile: German Jewish Identity Development In Wartime Shanghai, 1938-1945, Alice I. Reichman Jan 2011

Community In Exile: German Jewish Identity Development In Wartime Shanghai, 1938-1945, Alice I. Reichman

CMC Senior Theses

Between 1938 and 1940 approximately 18,000 Jews from Central Europe went to the Chinese city of Shanghai to escape Nazi persecution. While almost every nation in the world refused to accept these desperate refugees, thousands found refuge in Japanese occupied Shanghai, which was an open port and one could immigrate there with no visa or passport. In an incredibly short period of time the refugees were able to develop a vibrant Jewish community. Relying primarily on the testimony of former refugees, this thesis seeks to address three main questions: What did exile in Shanghai feel like for the refugees? How …

Does The Mind Extend Out Into The World, Andrew D. Kishino Jan 2011

Does The Mind Extend Out Into The World, Andrew D. Kishino

CMC Senior Theses

The extended mind debate juggles the possibilities of whether or not the mind extends out into the world. Today, with the rise in technology, we have an additional claim that our tools are responsible for extending our minds. The internet, smart phones, and other tools give us a foothold in the extended mind debate by providing real world examples of how our mind is perceived as extending out into the world. In discovering where the divide between mind and environment exists we can come up with a conclusion whether or not the mind truly extends out into the world.

Basal Internal Anal Sphincter Tone, Inhibitory Neurotransmission, And Other Factors Contributing To The Maintenance Of High Pressures In The Anal Canal, S. Rattan, J. Singh Jan 2011

Basal Internal Anal Sphincter Tone, Inhibitory Neurotransmission, And Other Factors Contributing To The Maintenance Of High Pressures In The Anal Canal, S. Rattan, J. Singh

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Maintenance of the basal tone in the internal anal sphincter (IAS) is critical for rectoanal continence. Effective evacuation requires a fully functional rectoanal inhibitory reflex (RAIR)-mediated relaxation of the IAS via inhibitory neurotransmission (INT). Systematic studies examining the nature of the INT in different species have identified nitric oxide (NO) as the major inhibitory neurotransmitter. However, other mediators such as vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), ATP, and carbon monoxide (CO) may also play species-specific role under certain experimental conditions. Measurements of the intraluminal pressures in the IAS along with the force of the isolated IAS tissues are the mainstay in the …

Will The Convention On Biological Diversity Put An End To Biological Control?, Joop C. Van Lenteren, Matthew J.W. Cock, Jacques Brodeur, Barbara I.P. Barratt, Franz Bigler, Karel Bolckmans, Fabian Haas, Peter G. Mason, José Roberto P. Parra

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Will the Convention on Biological Diversity put an end to biological control? Under the Convention on Biological Diversity countries have sovereign rights over their genetic resources. Agreements governing the access to these resources and the sharing of the benefits arising from their use need to be established between involved parties. This also applies to species collected for potential use in biological control. Recent applications of access and benefit sharing principles have already made it difficult or impossible to collect and export natural enemies for biological control research in several countries. If such an approach is widely applied it would impede …

Documentary Theater And The Irony Of History, Aaron Amram Jan 2011

Documentary Theater And The Irony Of History, Aaron Amram

Theses & ETDs

I begin with an introduction to the history and basic themes of documentary theater, including its relationship to both history and historical theater, and its own fragmented artistic heritage. I examine the two central and continuing challenges for the documentary stage: how facts are best and most fairly presented, and to what audience they are, with readings of David Hare's Stuff Happens and Moises Kaufman's Gross Indecency. The nature of documented fact has changed, now that modern technology allows for almost any object or image to be easily reproduced, to become a document. There is a basically unequal relationship between …

Water Wars Down South An Analysis Of The Tri-State Battle Over The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, Marilyn Payne Jan 2011

Water Wars Down South An Analysis Of The Tri-State Battle Over The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, Marilyn Payne

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the southeastern water war among Alabama, Georgia, and Florida over the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. It focuses on the political and legal issues at hand, while analyzing the circumstances of each that contributed to the current resource battle. I argue that the political factors associated with the ACF River Basin, coupled with the environmental and economic aspects at stake, have over time led to an inefficient use of water that created the battle over the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. Furthermore, this thesis examines the three main possibilities for a resolution: congressional apportionment, judicial apportionment and interstate compact. After analyzing …

Execitive Control And Language Mode In Monoligual And Biligual Young Adults, Emma Ward Jan 2011

Execitive Control And Language Mode In Monoligual And Biligual Young Adults, Emma Ward

Theses & ETDs

Bilingual and monolingual children and adults differ in their performance on tasks that require conflict control, the ability to attend to pertinent information in the face of distractors, but inconsistency in the literature suggests that an additional element is at play. The current study compared monolingual and bilingual young adults performance on some of these tasks containing conflict before and after a manipulation of language mode, designed to increase the salience of the linguistic context and possibly activate or enhance language group differences. The groups did not differ in their responses to cueing, but their responses to stimulus-response congruence and …

Herbage Mass Accumulation In An Intensive Rotational Grazing System At Unh's Organic Dairy Research Facility, Ashley Green Jan 2011

Herbage Mass Accumulation In An Intensive Rotational Grazing System At Unh's Organic Dairy Research Facility, Ashley Green

Master's Theses and Capstones

Pasture-based animal management in the Northeast U.S. relies on the ability to efficiently estimate pasture production and animal intake. Accuracy and precision of a rising plate meter, NDVI meter, and height measurements for estimating pasture biomass were compared relative to hand-clipped samples. Pasture measurements were used to describe biomass accumulation, lactating dairy herd intakes, and re-growth patterns for intensively rotated pastures. Pastures were measured from May-September, 2009 at the UNH Organic Dairy Research Facility in Lee, NH. The rising plate meter provided the most robust estimates of biomass (R²=0.58, SEE=2.73). Forty-seven paddocks were measured for 82 total grazing events; grazing …

The Effects Of Historic Earthen Barriers On Northern New England Tital Marshes, Jordan W. Mora Jan 2011

The Effects Of Historic Earthen Barriers On Northern New England Tital Marshes, Jordan W. Mora

Master's Theses and Capstones

Berms, defined as historic earthen barriers, represent one type of hydrological modification introduced by humans in the tidal marshes of northern New England. Three different research approaches were applied to study the impact of berms on various tidal marsh dynamics. The descriptive study shows that restricted flooding from berm interference can result in significantly altered physical gradients in addition to landward subsidence and pool development. The results from the transplant experiment indicate that the altered landward structure affects the relative importance of biological interactions, namely herbivory, in controlling plant species distribution. The predictive GIS analyses illustrate the location of 34 …

Identifying Conflict Between Winter Recreational Trail Users In Middlesex Fells Reservation, Kimberly A. Russell Jan 2011

Identifying Conflict Between Winter Recreational Trail Users In Middlesex Fells Reservation, Kimberly A. Russell

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study investigates conflict between recreational trail users in Middlesex Fells Reservation during the winter season, specifically conflict between cross-country skiers, snowshoers/hikers/nature walkers and dog owners. Conflict in outdoor recreation can be theoretically classified as (1) interpersonal, where the physical presence of another individual or group directly interferes with one's goals, and (2) social values conflict, where groups do not share the same norms or social values, regardless of physical presence of other groups. Data were collected at five trail heads using a quantitative, on-site survey design. Data were analyzed from respondents in three major activity groups who had previously …

Nonlinear Evaluation Of Stock Assessment And Marine Ecosystem Models, Laura Storch Jan 2011

Nonlinear Evaluation Of Stock Assessment And Marine Ecosystem Models, Laura Storch

Master's Theses and Capstones

In fisheries management, single-species stock assessment models use fisheries-dependent catch and landings data along with fishery-independent estimates of relative or absolute abundance to make estimates of species biomass for a given area. This output is used by the Atlantis marine ecosystem model as input. Atlantis uses an array of physical, biological, and anthropogenic factors to predict biomass for individual species or functional groups of species. Nonlinear analysis was used to assess the output for both the stock assessment, and Atlantis models for the marine ecosystem off the California coast. The number of time series displaying nonlinear characteristics decreases from raw …

Results show that foraging activity in Great Bay Estuary peaked in December and March, and in HSE, in April and November. Crabs in both estuaries experienced synchronous breeding periods. Males experienced two molts per year in April and November, while females molted synchronously in June. Embryogenesis was accomplished within the month of June. Minimum size at maturity for females in New Hampshire was larger than …

Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation And Water Quality On Wood Frog Population Genetic Structure In Vernal Pools, Charlotte Gabrielsen Jan 2011

Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation And Water Quality On Wood Frog Population Genetic Structure In Vernal Pools, Charlotte Gabrielsen

Master's Theses and Capstones

Habitat fragmentation associated with suburbanization can have negative consequences on population persistence through the reduction of dispersal and concomitant gene flow. Using nine polymorphic microsatellite loci, I assessed the effects of forest fragmentation and water quality on the genetic structure of a vernal pool-breeding amphibian, the wood frog ( Lithobates sylvaticus), across 20 ponds in an unfragmented, forested landscape and 45 ponds in a fragmented landscape. Analyses were performed at the broad-scale of the study area and at a fine-scale, with spatially independent clusters of ponds selected within each landscape. Bayesian clustering approaches and AMOVA identified little population structure at …

A Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Network Model Of Alveolar Mechanics, Danielle Nangle Jan 2011

A Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Network Model Of Alveolar Mechanics, Danielle Nangle

Master's Theses and Capstones

Pulmonary micromechanics (at the scale of alveoli) involves a delicate balance among tissue material properties, geometry, surface tension, pressure and stress distribution. To date, there is not a consensus among alveolar mechanics researchers about how these factors interact, in part because alveoli are so difficult to image and study in vivo. Here, we propose a basic mathematical model of a two-dimensional hexagonal network of mechanically coupled alveoli. We investigate equilibrium configurations of both dry and wet, internally pressurized elastic networks. Specifically, we compute pressure-area curves to quantify the differences among networks with different spring constants, internal pressures, network size and …

Robot Motion Planning Using Real-Time Heuristic Search, Jarad Cannon Jan 2011

Robot Motion Planning Using Real-Time Heuristic Search, Jarad Cannon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Autonomous mobile robots must be able to plan quickly and stay reactive to the world around them. Currently, navigating in the presence of dynamic obstacles is a problem that modern techniques struggle to handle in a real-time manner, even when the environment is known. The solutions range from using: 1) sampling-based algorithms which cut down on the shear size of these state spaces, 2) algorithms which quickly try to plan complete paths to the goal (to avoid local minima) and 3) using real-time search techniques designed for static worlds. Each of these methods have fundamental flaws that prevent it from …

Identification And Characterization Of Photorhabdus Temperata Mutants Altered In Hemolysis And Virulence, Christine A. Chapman Jan 2011

Identification And Characterization Of Photorhabdus Temperata Mutants Altered In Hemolysis And Virulence, Christine A. Chapman

Master's Theses and Capstones

Photorhabdus temperata is an invertebrate pathogen and nematode symbiont that is commonly used as a biological control agent in the management of commercial crop pests. The focus of this study was to investigate the poorly understood molecular elements involved in the expression of hemolysis and virulence in this bacterium. A 10,000 transposant library was screened using a blood agar plate assay to identify mutants altered in hemolytic activity. A total of 74 mutants displaying defective, delayed, or early hemolysis were identified and subsequently tested for altered virulence in the Greater Waxmoth, Galleria mellonella, using an in vitro mortality assay. Ten …
