Determining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Beekeeping Cooperative In The Bloomington-Normal, Illinois Area, Courtney Luensman '12 Nov 2011

Determining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Beekeeping Cooperative In The Bloomington-Normal, Illinois Area, Courtney Luensman '12

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of implementing a beekeeping cooperative in the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois area. Through the literature review, it is exhibited that honeybees play a very important role in the pollination of certain crops, but there has been a decline in honeybee population, which could result in possible crop reduction. My research was determining benefits and feasibility in the formation of a beekeeping cooperative. Through conducting interviews with beekeepers, farmers, cooperatives, and agricultural organizations, I have determined that there are significant benefits to be gained from the presence of a cooperative, although there are …

Reason, The Common Law, And The Living Constitution (Review Of The Living Constitution By David Strauss), Matthew J. Steilen Nov 2011

Reason, The Common Law, And The Living Constitution (Review Of The Living Constitution By David Strauss), Matthew J. Steilen

Book Reviews

This article reviews David Strauss’s recent book, The Living Constitution. The thesis of Strauss’s book is that constitutional law is a kind of common law, based largely on judicial precedent and common-sense judgments about what works and what is fair. Strauss argues constitutional doctrines prohibiting discrimination and protecting free speech have a common law basis, and that the originalist would have to reject them. However, it is unclear that the common law can justify these rights. This review examines Strauss’s account of the common law and shows why it cannot justify our First Amendment protections of subversive advocacy, as Strauss …

Background Comparative studies of amniotes have been hindered by a dearth of reptilian molecular sequences. With the genomic assembly of the green anole, Anolis carolinensis available, non-avian reptilian genes can now be compared to mammalian, avian, and amphibian homologs. Furthermore, with more than 350 extant species in the genus Anolis, anoles are an unparalleled example of tetrapod genetic diversity and divergence. As an important ecological, genetic and now genomic reference, it is imperative to develop a standardized Anolis gene nomenclature alongside associated vocabularies and other useful metrics. Results Here we report the formation of the Anolis Gene Nomenclature Committee (AGNC) …

Evaluation Of Cancer From Exposure To Cyanotoxins In Drinking Water At Grand Lake Saint Marys, Timothy Edward Soward Nov 2011

Evaluation Of Cancer From Exposure To Cyanotoxins In Drinking Water At Grand Lake Saint Marys, Timothy Edward Soward

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: The Celina Water Department treats and supplies surface water contaminated by cyanotoxins from Grand Lake Saint Marys (GLSM) to approximately 12,000 customers in Celina, Ohio. Cyanotoxins are a biochemically and bioactively diverse group of extremely potent natural toxins in water. A common cyanotoxin called microcystin-LR found in GLSM has been associated with acute liver damage and potentially liver and colorectal cancer.

Methods: In this observational study, the city of Celina (Mercer County) Ohio that had a contaminated surface water supply, the cancer incidence was compared with two control cities, St. Marys, and Wapakoneta (Auglaize County) in Ohio, both served …

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss Nov 2011

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss

Research Papers

Between 1483 and 1526, one-hundred and twenty-four trials were conducted by the Spanish Inquisition against conversos in Ciudad Real. The notarial records from these trials contain a multitude of references to material culture, including sculpted artworks, candles, and effigies. This essay analyzes the references to materiality utilized in arraignments, witness testimonies, and verdicts, and then correlates them to broader constructions of cultural identity. These references reveal a pre-modern animistic world view in which objects both shape and are shaped by their participation as active agents in religious ritual.

Effect Of Experimentally-Induced Anterior Knee Pain On Postural Control, Emily Elizabeth Falk Nov 2011

Effect Of Experimentally-Induced Anterior Knee Pain On Postural Control, Emily Elizabeth Falk

Theses and Dissertations

Context: Knee pain is experienced by many people. Because of this, authors have started researching the effects of pain on lower extremity mechanics and also on static and dynamic postural control. However, the effects of pain are difficult to study due to associated confounding variables. Objective: We asked: (1) Will experimentally-induced anterior knee pain alter perceived pain using the visual analogue scale? ; (2) will perceived pain affect postural control as measured by center-of-pressure during static and dynamic movement? Design: Crossover. Setting: Biomechanics laboratory. Participants: Fifteen healthy subjects. Intervention: Each subject participated in single leg quiet stance, landing, and walking …

Death Receptor 5 Signaling Promotes Hepatocyte Lipoapoptosis., Sophie C. Cazanave, Justin L. Mott, Steven F. Bronk, Nathan W. Werneburg, Christian D. Fingas, X Wei Meng, Niklas Finnberg, Wafik S. El-Deiry, Scott H. Kaufmann, Gregory J. Gores

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is characterized by hepatic steatosis, elevated levels of circulating free fatty acids (FFA), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and hepatocyte lipoapoptosis. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) death receptor 5 (DR5) is significantly elevated in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and steatotic hepatocytes demonstrate increased sensitivity to TRAIL-mediated cell death. Nonetheless, a role for TRAIL and/or DR5 in mediating lipoapoptotic pathways is unexplored. Here, we examined the contribution of DR5 death signaling to lipoapoptosis by free fatty acids. The toxic saturated free fatty acid palmitate induces an increase in DR5 mRNA and protein expression in Huh-7 human hepatoma cells leading …

Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Remodels Its Host Cell-Derived Vacuole Into A Protective Niche By Redecorating The Vacuolar Membrane With Select Rab Gtpases And Bacterial Proteins, Bernice Huang Nov 2011

Anaplasma Phagocytophilum Remodels Its Host Cell-Derived Vacuole Into A Protective Niche By Redecorating The Vacuolar Membrane With Select Rab Gtpases And Bacterial Proteins, Bernice Huang

Theses and Dissertations

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular bacterium that infects neutrophils to cause the emerging tick-transmitted disease, human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). Following entry, the pathogen replicates within a host cell-derived vacuole that fails to mature along the endocytic pathway, does not acidify, and does not fuse with lysosomes. Selective fusogenicity is prototypical of many vacuole-adapted pathogens and has been attributed, at least in part, to pathogen modification of the vacuolar inclusion membrane and/or to selective recruitment or exclusion of host trafficking regulators. As a result, the A. phagocytophilum-occupied vacuolar membrane (AVM) provides a unique interface to study the host-pathogen interactions critical …

An Overview Of The Separation Phenomenon And The Experience Of Hospitalization For Children, Tara Pressley, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

When children are psychologically bonded to a caretaking adult they experience a characteristic spectrum of emotions and behaviors upon being separated from that attachment figure. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to the separation phenomenon and the emotional experience of hospitalisation for children in an attempt to integrate this knowledge into the diagnosis and treatment of children hospitalized medically and psychiatrically.

The Influence Of Social Environment On Plasma Oxytocin Levels In New Zealand White Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller Nov 2011

The Influence Of Social Environment On Plasma Oxytocin Levels In New Zealand White Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller

Open Access Theses

Previous research attests to the relationship between social support and positive health outcomes while linking social isolation or aggression/hostility with negative health outcomes. Several studies examining atherosclerosis with either genetic or behavioral origins, have reported decreased disease severity in socially supportive environments. In order to identify and understand the mechanism responsible for decreased disease, the current study examined physiological differences in New Zealand White rabbits within unstable, stable, and isolated social environments and observed whether functional hormonal changes were apparent over time and as a response to behavior characteristic of these environments. Results indicated that animals within the unstable condition …

Conservation And Loss Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Sites In Diploid And Polyploid Fragaria (Rosaceae), Bo Liu, Thomas M. Davis Nov 2011

Conservation And Loss Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Sites In Diploid And Polyploid Fragaria (Rosaceae), Bo Liu, Thomas M. Davis

Biological Sciences

The genus Fragaria comprises species at ploidy levels ranging from diploid (2n = 2x = 14) to decaploid (2n = 10x = 70). Fluorescence in situ hybridization with 5S and 25S rDNA probes was performed to gather cytogenetic information that illuminates genomic divergence among different taxa at multiple ploidy levels, as well as to explore the evolution of ribosomal RNA genes during polyploidization in Fragaria.

Learned Recognition And Avoidance Of Invasive Mosquitofish By The Shrimp, Paratya Australiensis, Joshua D. Bool, Kristen Whitcomb, Erin Kydd, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Little is known about the learning ability of crustaceans, especially with respect to their anti-predator responses to invasive species. In many vertebrates, anti-predator behaviour is influenced by experience during ontogeny. Here, predator-naïve glass shrimp (Paratya australiensisis) were exposed to a predatory, invasive fish species, Gambusia holbrooki, to determine whether shrimp could learn to: (1) avoid the scent of Gambusia via classical conditioning; and (2) restrict their activity patterns to the night to reduce predatory encounters. Conditioned shrimp were placed in containers in aquaria containing Gambusia for 3 days during which time they could be harassed but not consumed by Gambusia. …
