Oxidative Stress And Heme Oxygenase-1 Regulated Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation, Luca Vanella, Christopher Sanford Jr., Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, Nabil Ebraheim

Biochemistry and Microbiology

This paper describes the effect of increased expression of HO-1 protein and increased levels of HO activity on differentiation of bone-marrow-derived human MSCs. MSCs are multipotent cells that proliferate and differentiate into many different cell types including adipocytes and osteoblasts. HO, the rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, plays an important role during MSCs differentiation. HO catalyzes the stereospecific degradation of heme to biliverdin, with the concurrent release of iron and carbon monoxide. Upregulation of HO-1 expression and increased HO activity are essential for MSC growth and differentiation to the osteoblast lineage consistent with the role of HO-1 in hematopoietic stem …

Fashion: Hedonic Vs. Utilitarian: A Study Of Fit Issues Of Women’S Ready To Wear And An Examination Of The Technology Acceptance Model For Consumer Adoption Of 3d Body Scanning For Improved Fit Of Denim, Aimee Rzepka Nov 2011

Fashion: Hedonic Vs. Utilitarian: A Study Of Fit Issues Of Women’S Ready To Wear And An Examination Of The Technology Acceptance Model For Consumer Adoption Of 3d Body Scanning For Improved Fit Of Denim, Aimee Rzepka

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study exposes the problems women face in the ready to wear (RTW) apparel sizing system and also investigates the idea that 3D body scanning technology can be used to eliminate ill-fitting apparel for consumers, in this case denim pants (jeans). In order to investigate why consumers have not yet adopted this technology, a survey was conducted using principles from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to understand the motivations of females aged 18-35 towards adopting this new technology. Two hypotheses were formed: non-adoption is caused by hedonic motivation, or non-adoption is caused by utilitarian motivations. It can be concluded from …

The Effect Of Sexblindness And Sexawareness On Workplace Related Gender Bias, Katie Nichol Nov 2011

The Effect Of Sexblindness And Sexawareness On Workplace Related Gender Bias, Katie Nichol

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was an adaptation of Richeson and Nussbaum's (2004) study of racism to gender bias. Two different gender ideologies were theoretically analyzed, then the influence of these ideologies on implicit and explicit forms of gender bias was examined. Psychology undergraduates were presented with a prompt promoting either a sexblind or sexaware approach to reducing gender bias. Participants then completed a measure of implicit (IAT Gender/Career) and explicit (MAWWWS) bias. Results suggested that, relative to the sexaware perspective, the sexblind perspective generated less implicit gender bias. There was no difference between ideological groups on the explicit measure. The findings …

Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley Nov 2011

Mountains Of Injustice : Social And Environmental Justice In Appalachia, Michele Morrone, Geoffrey L. Buckley

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Research in environmental justice reveals that low-income and minority neighborhoods in our nation’s cities are often the preferred sites for landfills, power plants, and polluting factories. Those who live in these sacrifice zones are forced to shoulder the burden of harmful environmental effects so that others can prosper. Mountains of Injustice broadens the discussion from the city to the country by focusing on the legacy of disproportionate environmental health impacts on communities in the Appalachian region, where the costs of cheap energy and cheap goods are actually quite high.

Through compelling stories and interviews with people who are fighting for …

The Crooked Frame, John Sabbath Nov 2011

The Crooked Frame, John Sabbath

Theses

Every weekend when I was growing up, I could be found glued to the television set in my Spider-Man pajamas, inhaling my favorite frosted covered cereal, basking in the glow of the Saturday morning cartoons. My favorites were the reruns of the classic Looney Tunes shorts, featuring the famous chases between that long eared hare Bugs Bunny and the egg-headed hunter, Elmer Fudd. Even as a child I was in awe of their timeless sense of humor and their limitless ability to parody any subject matter. Twenty years later, I strove to capture the same style and spirit that the …

Good Teaching: Aligning Student And Administrator Perceptions And Expectations, Lazarus Nabaho, Joseph Oonyu, Jessica Norah Aguti Nov 2011

Good Teaching: Aligning Student And Administrator Perceptions And Expectations, Lazarus Nabaho, Joseph Oonyu, Jessica Norah Aguti

Higher Learning Research Communications

Literature attests to limited systematic inquiry into students’ conceptions of good teaching in higher education. Resultantly, there have been calls for engaging students in construing what makes good university teaching and in developing a richer conception of teaching excellence. This interpretivist study that is based on views of final year university students from six academic disciplines investigated students’ conceptions of good teaching at Makerere University in Uganda. Students conceived good teaching as being student-centred, demonstrating strong subject and pedagogical knowledge, being approachable, being responsive, being organised, and being able to communicate well. Most of the conceptions of good teaching hinge …

Transformation And Renewal, Josephine Stokes Nov 2011

Transformation And Renewal, Josephine Stokes

Theses and Dissertations

Artist Statement My art has a common thread of transformation and renewal. It is often my response to the many different changing cycles in life, whether seasonal, emotional, or the process of aging. In addition, the spiritual connections to my faith and family are embedded into many of the works which tell a story of my life and my ever searching soul. Revelations of myself over time and the transformation of thoughts are visually exposed. However, they are revealed with a keen eye and hand which are meant to reach out to the viewer, so they may be transformed and …

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey, 2011 And Trends 2007–2011: A Sourcebook Of Community Attitudes, Sharon Chamard, Heather Macalpine

Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey (Mat-Su Survey), conducted annually since 2006, is a cooperative research effort between the Justice Center at University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The survey asks Mat-Su Borough residents to evaluate the quality of Borough services, provide opinions about Borough decision-making, and sum up their perceptions about a range of issues relevant to the present and future of the Mat-Su community. The 2011 survey was distributed to 2,577 adult heads-of-household in the Mat-Su Borough in the late summer and fall of 2011; a total of 1,159 surveys were returned, for a response rate …

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

BDD-based symbolic model checking is capable of verifying systems with a large number of states. In this work, we report an extensible framework to facilitate symbolic encoding and checking of hierarchical systems. Firstly, a novel library of symbolic encoding functions for compositional operators (e.g., parallel composition, sequential composition, choice operator, etc.) are developed so that users can apply symbolic model checking techniques to hierarchical systems with little knowledge of symbolic encoding techniques (like BDD or CUDD). Secondly, as the library is language-independent, we build an extensible framework with various symbolic model checking algorithms so that the library can be easily …

Evaluate Agreement Of Differential Expression For Translational Cross-Species Genomics, Cuilan Gao Nov 2011

Evaluate Agreement Of Differential Expression For Translational Cross-Species Genomics, Cuilan Gao

Probability & Statistics Seminar

An important problem in translational genomics is to evaluate the fidelity of an animal model of a human disease. We developed the agreement of differential expression (AGDEX) procedure to evaluate the agreement of the results of a differential expression experiment using mouse with those of a similar experiment using humans. AGDEX uses an agreement statistic to measure the similarity of expression differences for pre-defined sets of ortholog-matched genes. Significance is determined by permutation. In two pediatric cancer genomics studies, AGDEX was used to determine that a brain tumor in a mouse model showed a similar gene expression profile to that …
