Improved Stereo Vision Methods For Fpga-Based Computing Platforms, Wade S. Fife
Improved Stereo Vision Methods For Fpga-Based Computing Platforms, Wade S. Fife
Theses and Dissertations
Stereo vision is a very useful, yet challenging technology for a wide variety of applications. One of the greatest challenges is meeting the computational demands of stereo vision applications that require real-time performance. The FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is a readily-available technology that allows many stereo vision methods to be implemented while meeting the strict real-time performance requirements of some applications. Some of the best results have been obtained using non-parametric stereo correlation methods, such as the rank and census transform. Yet relatively little work has been done to study these methods or to propose new algorithms based on …

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur
Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur
Theses and Dissertations
People are nomadic; traveling from place to place. As a user travels, he may need access to his digital information, including his data, applications, and settings. A convenient way to supply this access is to have the user carry that digital information in a portable computer such as a laptop or smart phone. As Moore's Law continues to operate, devices such as smart phones can easily perform the computing necessary for a user's work. Unfortunately, the amount of data a human can receive and convey through such devices is limited. To receive more information humans require more screen real estate. …

Investigating Early Mississippian Community Patterning In The Mid-South Through Multiple-Method Survey Of The Ames Site (40fy7) In Fayette County, Tennessee, Eric Anderson Goddard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The settlement patterns of small, Early Mississippian sites located in upland locations of the Mid-South remain poorly understood despite decades of research in the area. A multi-stage research design was implemented to determine the settlement system used in the region by applying multiple discovery methods to study the Ames Mound Complex (40FY7), an Early Mississippian site in Western Tennessee that has been considered a vacant ceremonial center since its discovery. Ames underwent surface collection, shovel testing, magnetometry survey and excavation to determine if the site was indeed a vacant center, or if it contained a habitation area associated with the …
Sperm Allocation And Sociosexual Behavior In Meadow Voles, Ashlee Anne Vaughn
Sperm Allocation And Sociosexual Behavior In Meadow Voles, Ashlee Anne Vaughn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, are microtine rodents that inhabit grasslands in the temperate zone of northeastern and central North America. During the breeding season, males inhabit large overlapping home ranges that encompass the territories of one or more females. Males and females are promiscuous and males compete with other males for mating opportunities with females. The threat of this competition varies depending on the presence of a rival, the number of rivals, and the quality of a rival. Male and female meadow voles scent mark and conspecifics use the information contained in these scent marks to locate mates and rivals. …

Assessment Of Backwash Water Discharge Operation At Sheahan Pumping Station, Memphis, Tennessee, Jittapong Malasri
Assessment Of Backwash Water Discharge Operation At Sheahan Pumping Station, Memphis, Tennessee, Jittapong Malasri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study provided analysis of the distribution of solids, volume of solids by weight and volume of discharge of the backwash operations at Sheahan Pumping Station. The sample data was analyzed statistically against factors that potentially affect the results. The combination of the data and statistical analysis helped formulated a theory of how the solids behave within the recovery basin. The suggested behavior of the suspended solids within the recovery basin is supported by visual observations, recovery basin characteristics, residual pump location and suspended solid data. Knowing the behavior of suspended solids within the basin is critical in designing an …
Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla
Binning Metagenomic Data By Cssr, Rekha Bhaskarabhatla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Metagenomics is the study of microbes in their natural environments without the need for isolation and lab cultivation. The DNA fragments obtained from sequencing of a sample of mixed species requires taxonomic characterization called binning. My research concerns binning of metagenomic data using a novel approach. Each genomic sequence was codified based on their Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio (CSSR) values. Since the genic CSSR values of phylogenetically related organisms often share a definable pattern, a neural network was trained to recognize the genic CSSR patterns of known species. The trained neural network was then used to cluster the CSSR values from …

Effect Of Nanofluid-Based Absorbers On Direct Solar Collector / Tham Chi Meng, Chi Meng Tham
Student Works (2010-2019)
As conventional energy like fossil fuels is getting rare, cost of energy production has been increasingly higher. The concern of environmental pollution caused by burning of hydrocarbon fuels has also been raised among developed and developing nations. These make clean renewable energy a major research topic in recent decades. Among them, solar energy, as the most vastly available energy and also supremely effective in terms of energy conversion has been the most sought after. The most common solar thermal collector utilizes black surface as radiant absorber but the efficiency is limited to the effectiveness of the black surface and the …

Over the last decade, small noncoding RNA molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in the expression and function of eukaryotic genomes. It has been suggested that viral infections and neurological disease outcome may also be shaped by the influence of small RNAs. This has prompted us to suggest that HIV infection alters the endogenous miRNA expression patterns, thereby contributing to neuronal deregulation and AIDS dementia. Therefore, using primary cultures and neuronal cell lines, we examined the impact of a viral protein (HIV-1 Tat) on the expression of miRNAs due to its characteristic features such as release …
Dietary Food Fortified With Orotic Acid And Liver Function, Yohanes Buang
Dietary Food Fortified With Orotic Acid And Liver Function, Yohanes Buang
Makara Journal of Science
The effects of dietary food fortified with orotic acid (1.0%) on liver function were studied in rats. The rats fed with orotic acid promoted liver triglyceride content markedly, that was 5-fold higher than that of the control. The liver malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased by 10%, but the gluthation peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity decreased by 50%. The serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities increased by 25% and 30%, respectively. Therefore, the decreased GSH-Px activity was associated with the promotions of AST, ALT, and the liver MDA levels. In conclusion: dietary orotic acid promotes lipid peroxidation but reduces the rate …

Makara Journal of Science
Three types of cyclopentanone derivatives have been synthesized from aromatic aldehyde and ketone derivatives under a base condition through aldol condensation. These cyclopentanone products were 2,5-dibenzylidene-cyclopentanone (a), 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (b), and 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (c) which has a yield of 63-99%. The chemical structure of these compounds were determined using UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy. In order to clarify the role of hydroxyl and amine moieties, toxic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were carried out. The toxic test indicated that the compounds showed strong toxicity. In addition, the presence of hydroxyl and amine groups on both rings of curcumin increased the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory …

Planning Combinatorial Disulfide Cross-Links For Protein Fold Determination, Fei Xiong, Alan M Friedman, Chris Bailey-Kellogg
Dartmouth Scholarship
Fold recognition techniques take advantage of the limited number of overall structural organizations, and have become increasingly effective at identifying the fold of a given target sequence. However, in the absence of sufficient sequence identity, it remains difficult for fold recognition methods to always select the correct model. While a native-like model is often among a pool of highly ranked models, it is not necessarily the highest-ranked one, and the model rankings depend sensitively on the scoring function used. Structure elucidation methods can then be employed to decide among the models based on relatively rapid biochemical/biophysical experiments.

Strengthening Families: Parents' Voices On Discipline And Child Rearing, Elizabeth M. Breshears
Journal of Family Strengths
This qualitative study conducted semi-structured, multi-session focus groups and interviews with twenty-seven participants to explore in-depth, participant constructs of child discipline and punishment methods and reasons for the continuing support for corporal punishment of U.S. children. The research assumed that parents want to parent well and utilized the strengths perspective as the instrument to listen to participants' voices. Narratives revealed that participants were thoughtful about discipline and parenting strategies and viewed their parent role as a serious commitment. Non-violent discipline strategies, particularly communication, were often used. However, parents generally framed use of physical punishment as “when children need spanking” versus …
