Circumpunct, Kristin Epperson Nov 2011

Circumpunct, Kristin Epperson

Theses and Dissertations

I experimented with different imagery until I found a symbol that reflected my interpretation of my subconscious. This symbol is referred to as a circumpunct, or a circle with a dot in the middle. The dot in the middle is called a void. The circumpunct acts as emotional restraint, while the void acts as a challenge that is on the horizon. Process and meditation are what allow me to create from this subconscious labyrinth. By hand, I either paint or sculpt circumpuncts. By creating these circumpuncts and their voids, I have transformed a subconscious emotion into something visual. I started …

Evolution, Terror Management Theory, And Humans’ Relationship With Nature, Joshua Warren Vinocour Nov 2011

Evolution, Terror Management Theory, And Humans’ Relationship With Nature, Joshua Warren Vinocour

Dissertations

This study investigated the savannah hypothesis, an evolutionary explanation for human environmental preference. It aimed to address some of the methodological shortcomings of prior research while simultaneously investigating the role of non-evolutionary influences, such as existential anxiety and individual differences. Ninety-eight undergraduate participants were shown photos of Natural, Mixed, and Built settings and rated the visual attractiveness of each photo. Results showed that Built scenes were preferred over Natural and Mixed scenes, in contradiction to the savannah hypothesis. Existential anxiety, however, did not appear to influence photo ratings. Individual differences, such as ethnicity and the quality participants’ previous outdoor experiences …

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley Nov 2011

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley

Theses and Dissertations

It can be difficult to quickly and easily create realistic sandstone terrain. Film makers often need to generate realistic terrain for establishing the setting of their film. Many methods have been created which address terrain generation. One such method is using heightmaps which encode height as a gray-value in a 2d image. Most terrain generation techniques don't admit concavities such as overhangs and arches. We present an algorithm that operates on a voxel grid for creating 3d terrain. Our algorithm uses curvature estimation to weather away the terrain. We speed up our method using a caching mechanism that stores the …

Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities", Laurel C. Schneider Nov 2011

Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities", Laurel C. Schneider

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dualities is an important book. It represents a contribution to the field of Hindu Christian studies, but it also adds considerably to women's studies in religion and to the emergent field of comparative theology. Michelle Voss Roberts has managed to treat with sensitivity and creativity two enigmatic figures, each from long ago and far away (from us and from each other), and each from two dramatically different religious traditions. What is remarkable about this study is that Voss Roberts manages to introduce us to the basic shape of both of these women's thought while at the same time pursuing a …

A method for preparing a stable dispersion of a camptothecin, camptothecin prodrug, or analog thereof for administration to a patient in need thereof includes preparing a solution of the camptothecin, wherein the solution has a pH which places substantially an entirety of that camptothecin in a carboxylate form. The camptothecin may be a neutral camptothecin. The solution is next loaded into a liposome including at least one lipid, which may be a phospholipid. An intraliposomal pH is maintained which preserves substantially an entirety of the camptothecin in the carboxylate form. The liposomal dispersion is administered to an individual in need …

The Nih-Niaid Filariasis Research Reagent Resource Center, Michelle L. Michalski, Kathryn G. Griffiths, Steven A. Williams, Ray M. Kaplan, Andrew Moorhead

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Filarial worms cause a variety of tropical diseases in humans; however, they are difficult to study because they have complex life cycles that require arthropod intermediate hosts and mammalian definitive hosts. Research efforts in industrialized countries are further complicated by the fact that some filarial nematodes that cause disease in humans are restricted in host specificity to humans alone. This potentially makes the commitment to research difficult, expensive, and restrictive. Over 40 years ago, the United States National Institutes of Health–National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH-NIAID) established a resource from which investigators could obtain various filarial parasite species …

Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran Nov 2011

Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Keratinocyte terminal differentiation is the process that ultimately forms the epidermal barrier that is essential for mammals to survive in the ex utero environment. This process is tightly controlled by the expression of many well-characterized genes. Although a few of these genes are known to be regulated by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), an important regulator of multiple epidermal functions, neither the genome-wide scale of EGFR-mediated regulation nor the mechanisms by which EGFR signaling controls keratinocyte differentiation are well understood. Using microarray analysis we identified 2,676 genes that are regulated by EGF, a ligand of the EGFR. We further …

Design And Evaluation Of A Novel Composite Chitosan-Poly(Lactide-Co-Glycolide) Microsphere Based System For Bone Tissue Engineering Applications, Marvin Magan Mecwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nearly 60% to 67% of all injuries that occur annually within the US are due to musculoskeletal injuries, with over a million people requiring implants and bone grafting materials to reconstruct bone defects. Our lab has previously developed composite chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite microsphere based bone grafts that had good compressive strengths, supported bone cell growth and mineralization in vitro, demonstrated biocompatibility and osteoconductivity in a rat calvarial defect model, and when loaded with rhBMP-2 was osteoinductive in a rat muscle pouch model. However, degradation of these scaffolds was very slow which may have limited the amount of new bone formed in vivo. …

Sensory Modulation Disorder In Puerto Rican Preschoolers: Associated Risk Factors, Rosa L. Roman-Oyola Nov 2011

Sensory Modulation Disorder In Puerto Rican Preschoolers: Associated Risk Factors, Rosa L. Roman-Oyola

Theses and Dissertations

Sensory Modulation Disorder (SMD) reduces a child’s ability to respond to sensory stimuli in the environment in a manner that corresponds to the nature or intensity of the stimulus; this disorder therefore significantly can impact participation in developmentally appropriate play and functional activities. More studies are needed to enhance research in the field of SMD and aid the general community in understanding the disorder and its causes. The purpose of this study was to characterize the prevalence of SMD among Puerto Rican preschoolers and examine the relationship between specific risk factors (socioeconomic status, pre-natal alcohol exposure, low birth weight, preterm …

Studies On The Adherence Properties Of Plant Lectins And Bacterial Adhesins And Their Inhibition By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides And Bovine Colostrum Fractions, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez Nov 2011

Studies On The Adherence Properties Of Plant Lectins And Bacterial Adhesins And Their Inhibition By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides And Bovine Colostrum Fractions, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

To initiate colonization and infection, most microbial pathogens must first recognize and adhere to cells in the host tissues. Adherence inhibition, therefore, can be used as a strategy for preventing infectious disease. In this research, we developed a simplified model using plant lectins and HEp-2 tissue culture cells to simulate bacterial adhesins-receptors interactions. The effect of lectin ligands and two prebiotic carbohydrates, galactooligosaccharide (GOS) and polydextrose (PDX) was measured with this approach. Lectins that were able to bind to the target cells were inhibited in the presence of the cognate ligands and at least one of the prebiotic carbohydrates. The …

Unfamiliar Territory: Faculty Discomfort About Interactions With Students During Out-Of-Class Academic Initiatives, Jörg Vianden, Kerri A. Smith Nov 2011

Unfamiliar Territory: Faculty Discomfort About Interactions With Students During Out-Of-Class Academic Initiatives, Jörg Vianden, Kerri A. Smith

New York Journal of Student Affairs

A considerable body of research exists on successful student outcomes from interactions with faculty. When such interactions do not take place research often cites issues of student discomfort with faculty members in out-of-class situations as reasons. This qualitative study with eight faculty members at a Southern research institution explored these issues from the faculty perspective. Findings show that faculty may have a similar sense of discomfort about interacting with students outside of the classroom. This has direct implications for the work of student affairs professionals attempting to recruit faculty for co-curricular academic initiatives. The authors offer recommendations for student affairs …

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Arthropod Biodiversity In Native Canebrakes, Justin James Geise Nov 2011

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Arthropod Biodiversity In Native Canebrakes, Justin James Geise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dense stands of Arundinaria gigantea (Walt.) Chapm. or canebrakes werecommon in the southeastern US, but currently are a critically endangered ecosystem with less than 2% of their area remaining. Remnant canebrakes have become fragmented and isolated. In this study, arthropod communities within these canebrake patches and non-cane patches were examined to assess general island biogeography theories.Four patches (>0.5ha; <0.5ha to >0.1ha; <0.1ha; adjacent non cane patch) were selected at four sites in the Mississippi alluvial valley during three collection periods. Measures of diversity, community composition, and functional group organization were compared to determine if differences existed.Diversity measures and functional group organization did not differ among patch sizes. Diversity measures decreased as distance from canebrakes increased. Canebrakes contained many species that were not found in adjacent non-cane patches with almost 97% uncommon to rare. Conservation of canebrakes is necessary to maintain the biodiversity of these uncommon arthropods.
