Grounded Ideologies The Feeling Of Pwer And System-Justification, Timothy Nest Jan 2011

Grounded Ideologies The Feeling Of Pwer And System-Justification, Timothy Nest

Theses & ETDs

Contrary to traditional approaches in the psychological study of group behavior, System-justification theory has argued that social actors are not only motivated to sustain their local social affiliations, relevant group identifications, and ingroup relevant belief systems, but also possess a basic motivation to preserve and maintain dominant social structures through system-affirming ideologies. Since the rise in popularity of the Implicit association test (IAT), System justification theory has shown that socially marginalized group members or those in positions of limited social power, tend to exhibit high levels of in-group derogation and out-group favoritism compared to members of dominant, or high-status social …

Temporal Patterns Of Burrow Use By Gopher Tortoises (Gophexus Polyphemus) At The Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, Forest Hayes Jan 2011

Temporal Patterns Of Burrow Use By Gopher Tortoises (Gophexus Polyphemus) At The Ordway-Swisher Biological Station, Forest Hayes

Theses & ETDs

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is prominent in sandhill communities of the southeastern United States and creates burrows that are used for shelter or habitat by hundreds of species. Gopher tortoises are difficult to monitor due to their reclusive nature. Infrared-triggered digital cameras allow for comprehensive monitoring of gopher tortoise burrow activity. During the summers of 2009 and 2010, six infrared-triggered camera traps were used to monitor gopher tortoise activity at burrow entrances. These cameras were used to monitor gopher tortoise burrows in order to ascertain their temporal activity patterns. In the 2010 study cameras were split between habitats treated …

"Smarten Up And Act Dumb, Sister!" Representations Of Sexuality And Gender In Children's Television Media, Zoe Nicole Kenney Jan 2011

"Smarten Up And Act Dumb, Sister!" Representations Of Sexuality And Gender In Children's Television Media, Zoe Nicole Kenney

Theses & ETDs

Media products created primarily for children must meet standards of acceptability that preclude sexual content. However, previous research indicates that representations of sexuality are present in childrens media. I examine this paradox through a content analysis of children's live-action television shows, with attention to the highly normative nature of the sexuality that is present. My sample includes 21 episodes from The Suite Life on Deck, the most popular show among 9-14 year olds on The Disney Channel as of Spring 2011. My data reflects the frequent heteronormativity and strictly delineated gender roles found in the content of such television programming. …

Adult Literacy Practices And Associated Motivational Needs, Kathryn A. Klein Jan 2011

Adult Literacy Practices And Associated Motivational Needs, Kathryn A. Klein

Theses & ETDs

Several factors have been linked to positive adult literacy program outcomes, however many possible influential factors on program success have yet to be researched. On the other hand, autonomy, competence, and relatedness, the three needs described by Self Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000) as crucial for the existence of intrinsic motivation, have been linked to a variety of positive outcomes in many academic contexts with students of a variety of age groups. The current study used SDT as a framework with which to investigate predictors of adult literacy practices through assessment of these students needs as learners. Three …

Parallelpiped Sounds Serious, Thomas Wheat Jan 2011

Parallelpiped Sounds Serious, Thomas Wheat

Theses & ETDs

There is no denying we live in a visually dominant culture; and for most of us we see no reason it shouldn't be so. What can be gained, beyond mere enrichment of our visual world, from our window into the sonic? Sound offers a different experience generating a point of perspective that implicitly questions assumptions of a world modeled by visual perception. Furthermore, by examining both experiences for their points of contrast, a dialog can be struck fostering a critical awareness of perceptual limitations inherent in each. PARALLELEPIPED: SOUNDS SERIOUS presents an encounter inviting each participant a window through which …

To Flatten Time & Give Blood To Ghosts Ezra Pound's Homage To Sextus Propertius, David Belew Jan 2011

To Flatten Time & Give Blood To Ghosts Ezra Pound's Homage To Sextus Propertius, David Belew

Theses & ETDs

This thesis incorporates Classical approaches and modern literary criticism to examine Ezra Pound's Homage to Sextus Propertius. This translation of the Augustan poet is first contextualized through the lens of Pound's poetics and wide ranging ideas on translation. The second chapter uses contemporary Classical scholarship to contextualize Propertius' work within the broader Augustan culture and his poetic influences. This view is then contrasted with historically held views of Propertius, particularly those of the Romantic era. The third chapter ties both perspectives together and questions the notion of whether any translation could capture the true Propertius.

Consequence In John Street Mill's Theory Of A Public, Gregory Granaghan Jan 2011

Consequence In John Street Mill's Theory Of A Public, Gregory Granaghan

Theses & ETDs

John Stuart Mill's On Liberty and his notable contributions to liberal thought: the tyranny of the majority and the harm principle, have often been over simplified as notions of leaving individuals to themselves. This thesis argues that Mill's work has a much more nuanced argument about the relationship between the individual and the public. I do so first by demonstrating the limits to individual freedoms as more than just liberty up until the point where one causes harm to another. Second, I show how Mill's confrontational civility, his argument of intellectual diversity and debate in a public sphere is about …

Inflamation And Depression, Elena Jeliazkova Jan 2011

Inflamation And Depression, Elena Jeliazkova

Theses & ETDs

Over a century ago, Professor Julius Wagner von Jauregg received the Nobel Prize for his work on the immunological implications of psychiatry. In the past twenty years, Psychoneuroimmunology has produced novel research on the immunological implications of psychiatric disorders, such as depression. Established by the American Psychiatric Association, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, defines the depression as a depressed mood and loss of interest, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, inability to concentrate, suicidality, psychomotor retardation and weight change. While no clear etiological explanation has been discovered, the pathophysiology of depression involves neurotransmitter imbalance. This review investigates the bidirectional …

Violence And Gender Identities In Mo Yan's Red Sarghum And Zhang Yiman's Film Adaptation, Clare Brown Jan 2011

Violence And Gender Identities In Mo Yan's Red Sarghum And Zhang Yiman's Film Adaptation, Clare Brown

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the depictions of violence and gender in Mo Yans novel, Red Sorghum, and Zhang Yimous film adaptation, also called Red Sorghum. Both works are representative of roots-seeking movements in Chinese literature and film during the 1980s, which sought to find a non-politicized cultural identity.

"Ich Kenne Jeden Stein Mit Vornamen" History, Heritage, And Discourses Of Power In Schwabisch Hall, Baden-Wurttemberg, Dylan Bailey Howard Jan 2011

"Ich Kenne Jeden Stein Mit Vornamen" History, Heritage, And Discourses Of Power In Schwabisch Hall, Baden-Wurttemberg, Dylan Bailey Howard

Theses & ETDs

Ideology, or mind-set, is the set of mental constructs that are embedded in the context in which people operate as a part of their daily lives: it is the things which are taken for granted and assumed to be true. All aspects of life, from food to medicine to religious practice to social interaction, are mediated in one way or another by ideology, which restricts actions and perspectives to a certain number of possibilities. Dominant ideologies necessarily silence non-dominant ones, and anthropology is particularly suited to uncover, deconstruct, and critique these cultural constructions. This project identifies features of the dominant …

Feeding Behavior Of Wild Vervet Monkeys In Loskop Dam Nature Preserve, Katherine Dean Jan 2011

Feeding Behavior Of Wild Vervet Monkeys In Loskop Dam Nature Preserve, Katherine Dean

Theses & ETDs

Studying the feeding behavior of nonhuman primates in the wild leads to a greater understanding of their behavioral ecology and has important implications for conservation. In this thesis, I documented the feeding behavior of three groups of wild vervet monkeys in Loskop Dam Nature Reserve, Mmpumalanga, South Africa from October 2009 to January 2010. I compared the diet of 51 individuals to their age, sex, rank, and endoparasitic richness. I found no significant correlations between diet and age, sex, and rank. There were significant positive correlations between feeding and endoparasites, suggesting that specific plant species are vehicles for parasites. I …

Writing The Animal, Ericka Miller Jan 2011

Writing The Animal, Ericka Miller

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I demonstrate the ways in which contemporary American fiction by women uses the animal as both a literal figure and a concept. Focusing on Amy Hempel, Alice Walker, and Octavia Butler, I examine how they link their portrayal of animals to the historical, current, and potential experiences of women: these writers depict cultures whose ideologies, social expectations, ethics, and hierarchies of value prove sexist and "speciesist." First I describe historical trends in the ways that representations of animalsand animality have been used in relation to women, often to justify oppression. The advent of evolutionary discourse in the …

"The Woman's Work" Constructions Of The Domestic In The Works Of Four Prose Poets, Joslyn Persh Jan 2011

"The Woman's Work" Constructions Of The Domestic In The Works Of Four Prose Poets, Joslyn Persh

Theses & ETDs

Since its popularization by Charles Baudelaire in the mid-1800s with his Le Spleen de Paris or Petits Pomes en Prose, prose poetry has been closely tied to the everyday. This thesis examines the relationship between prose poetry and domesticity and explores how four modern prose poetsGertrude Stein, Francis Ponge, Russell Edson, and Charles Simicare approaching themes of domestic life in their work. In the first chapter, I explore the nature of prose poetry in an effort to explain the distinction between prose poetry and its constituent parts, poetry and prose. Similarly, the nature of domesticity is addressed so one might …

Making Monsters Constructions Of Monstrosity In Gothic Literature, Nicole Robinson Jan 2011

Making Monsters Constructions Of Monstrosity In Gothic Literature, Nicole Robinson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis discusses two different constructions of monstrosity in British Gothic literature through a close reading of texts that range from 1796 to 1897. This thesis finds that in these texts monstrosity is something that can be taught, caught like an infection, or be the product of uncontrolled sexuality. The two discussions of monstrosity intersect in their concern with the dissolution or perversion of the family and society. The first chapter discusses monstrosity as insanity in Mathew Lewis's The Monk and James Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. These novels figure human men who are so …

Handling Sushi People And Places Of A Transnational Cuisine, Mark Wilco Jan 2011

Handling Sushi People And Places Of A Transnational Cuisine, Mark Wilco

Theses & ETDs

Sushi presents an interesting dilemma when studying issues of global exchange and transmission. While sushi is historically Japanese, its spread from Japan to America pre-World War II with the wave of immigration began a rapid change in the cuisine that allowed it to adapt to American tastes and sensibilities. Years later, sushi has made the return trip home, bringing with it new insights and flavor combinations. As a single commodity formed from a multitude of separate products such as rice, fish and seaweed, the labor that goes into its production is often overlooked. The fishermen, farmers, salesmen, distributers and chefs …

Dancing Under The Moonlight A Mathematecal Modeling Approach To Foraging Octracod, John Correa Jan 2011

Dancing Under The Moonlight A Mathematecal Modeling Approach To Foraging Octracod, John Correa

Theses & ETDs

Ostracods are a widespread crustacean that in certain species produce bioluminescence and have a relationship with cycles of the moon. By setting traps to sample the foraging population, and finding the rate of foraging, I investigate the relationship between the lunar cycle and ostracod foraging activity, using experimental data collected at Cayos Cochinos, Honduras from July 15 to July 28 in 2010. I observed that there is a relatively strong correlation between the lunar cycle and ostracod foraging activity. A mathematical model is developed to describe this relationship further. With the model, I am able to describe how the lunar …

Autonomy And The Value Of Humanity Problems In Korsgaard's The Sources Of Normativity, Joseph Abboud Jan 2011

Autonomy And The Value Of Humanity Problems In Korsgaard's The Sources Of Normativity, Joseph Abboud

Theses & ETDs

Christine Korsgaards The Sources of Normativity attempts to defend two claims which are fundamentally incompatible: that all values and obligations arise from the autonomous resolutions of the reflective individual, and that the individual must value humanity in itself in order to have any values or reasons to act at all. Korsgaards need to move beyond Kants argument for the Categorical Imperative to her theory of practical identity shows that an individuals conception of value is conditioned by her reflections on what makes her life worth living, rendering the construction of her system of values relative to the contingent contents of …

Cyanobacteria As A Biological Indicator For The Celery Fields Storm Water Mitigation Area In Sarasota, Anamica Bedi De Silva Jan 2011

Cyanobacteria As A Biological Indicator For The Celery Fields Storm Water Mitigation Area In Sarasota, Anamica Bedi De Silva

Theses & ETDs

Cyanobacteria are opportunistic phytoplankton that respond to changes in excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous. Their presence in ecosystems is particularly important due to their role as primary producers but also in their potential to accumulate to toxic levels. The relationship between limiting ammonia, nitrate and phosphate and the size of cyanobacteria populations was investigated in the Celery Fields Storm Water Mitigation Area in Sarasota, FL, USA. Water samples were collected weekly for eight weeks from each of the three ponds that make up the Celery Fields. Regression analysis from the study showed no relationship between nutrient concentration and …

I Am Punk A Prototype Analysis Of Identity In The Punk Music Subculture, Noelle Neemeh

Theses & ETDs

The present research looked at group and individual identity in the punk music subculture through a prototype analysis and through various measures (identity fusion and organizational identification). In the first study, a list was compiled of features that individuals saw as a description of the punk subculture. In the second study, participants had to rate how central they felt each word on a compiled list was to their concept of punks and themselves, as well as how positively or negatively they viewed it. Participants then completed measures for group identification. The results of Studies 1 and 2 indicate that punk …

A Body Of Her Own Pu Songling's "Chivalrous Woman" And The Tradition Of The Strange, Kate Boeyen Jan 2011

A Body Of Her Own Pu Songling's "Chivalrous Woman" And The Tradition Of The Strange, Kate Boeyen

Theses & ETDs

This thesis studies the Liaozhai Zhiyi, a seventeenth century collection of strange tales written by Pu Songling, the self-titled Historian of the Strange. The collection was written with the perspective of the thousand-year tradition of strange writing, and specifically contains two classical genres: fictionalized tales of the marvelous and historical accounts of anomalies. While the collection highlights the strange tradition's ambiguous place between history and fiction, in many of his tales, Pu Songling explores and plays with its conventional themes, motifs, and storylines. As exemplified in A Chivalrous Woman, Pu's innovative writing is particularly noteworthy for how the female characters …

Theses & ETDs

This experiment is a follow up to previous work investigating the conservation of stress mechanisms and serotonergic function in teleosts as compared to other chordates. The effects of manipulating elements of the serotonin system were tested on goldfish (Carassius auratus), which were subjected to the shuttle-box two-way avoidance paradigm.

Predation By Octopus Vulgaris At Cayos Cochinos, Honduras An Analysis Of Prey Selection Using The Framework Of Optimal Foraging Theory, Caitlin Petro Jan 2011

Predation By Octopus Vulgaris At Cayos Cochinos, Honduras An Analysis Of Prey Selection Using The Framework Of Optimal Foraging Theory, Caitlin Petro

Theses & ETDs

Octopus vulgaris is a major predator of benthic organisms in the intertidal reef at Cayos Cochinos, Honduras. Because they are capable of capturing a variety of species using different foraging techniques, their predatory behaviors can have a significant impact on community trophic structures and population dynamics. Field work was conducted in the intertidal reef at Cayos Mejor as part of a pilot study aimed at characterizing the prey items that were returned to the dens of O. vulgaris. Major prey items were determined based on midden contents and the relative availabilities of prey species were approximated using randomized quadrats. Subsequent …

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci Jan 2011

All The News That's Fit To Print? A Comparison Of News Narratives Of The 2009 Horduran Coup, Sarah P. Iacobucci

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to analyze the differences in the narratives about the coup d'etat of President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in 2009 from three news sources: Mexico's La Jornada, TeleSUR, a transnational Latin American news network, and The New York Times. La Jornada and TeleSUR both represent outlets with left-leaning, counter-hegemonic tendencies, but whereas TeleSUR represents the vision of ALBA, an organization of countries seeking alternate paths of development for the region, La Jornada is a wholly independent news source. By comparing these two sources with The New York Times, an emblem of mainstream Western news, this thesis seeks to …

The Role Of Computer-Based Content In Cooperative, Competitive, And Individualistic Decision-Making, Rachel Scherer Jan 2011

The Role Of Computer-Based Content In Cooperative, Competitive, And Individualistic Decision-Making, Rachel Scherer

Theses & ETDs

The tendency to choose either to cooperate or compete can be affected by many factors, including ones individual predisposition, the situational significance of the decision, and the context in which one makes the decision. Increasingly, collaboration and interaction via the internet are becoming more commonplace. The current study seeks to determine whether the context of a computer-based interaction- explicitly cooperative or explicitly competitive- can affect an individuals choice to cooperate or compete when that individual is no longer immersed in that context, or, in other words, has re-entered real life, similarly to how context can affect decision making in offline …

Parents' Preference For Gender Stereotypes In Children's Books, Carla Abad Jan 2011

Parents' Preference For Gender Stereotypes In Children's Books, Carla Abad

Theses & ETDs

Previous research has demonstrated that gender stereotypes are prevalent in preschool children and that books have the potential to challenge them. Recently, gender neutral and gender atypical books have increased in numbers; however, it is unknown whether parents would choose such books for their children. The current study explored parents preference for childrens books in regards to gender stereotypes. Participants included 53 parents (47 women, 6 men) who were asked to complete a survey. The survey assessed how likely the parents would be to want each of their children to read stories that were either gender stereotypical, gender atypical, or …

Translating And Reimagining Recovering Pizarnik In Her Late Prose Works, Juliana Nalerio Jan 2011

Translating And Reimagining Recovering Pizarnik In Her Late Prose Works, Juliana Nalerio

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the authorial image of Argentine-Jewish poet, Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972). Long thought of as a modern poet with minimal connection to any one tradition, I re-imagine her as a poet of Judaism, language and childhood through close readings of works, many poemas en prosa, written late in her life and after her fathers death. This thesis has three chapters: (1) Images of the Artist; (2) New Readings of Pizarnik (Prose) Poems; and (3) Translating Pizarnik (Prose) Poems. In the first chapter I examine notions of Pizarnik created by critics and by the public, then move to re-imagining her as …

Wild Cats In Captivity On Improving Captive Enviroment With Regard To Biology And Behavoir, Leandra Irene Lyniuk Jan 2011

Wild Cats In Captivity On Improving Captive Enviroment With Regard To Biology And Behavoir, Leandra Irene Lyniuk

Theses & ETDs

Leopards (Panthera pardus) and lions (Panthera leo) are the wild feline species examined in this thesis and case study. They are considered charismatic megafauna and popular in captivity while some subspecies are critically endangered in the wild. A literature review revealed that these species may be more complex behaviourally than previously thought. The conclusion was made that optimal captive habitats need to cater to each species unique behavioural and biological needs in order for these species to thrive in captivity. Captive habitat is the last environment in which they are supported. A case study conducted at the Jacksonville Zoo and …

Public Lies And Private Truths Images Of Dictatorial Power In La Fiesta Del Chivo And El OtoO Del Chivo., Sarah Thompson Jan 2011

Public Lies And Private Truths Images Of Dictatorial Power In La Fiesta Del Chivo And El OtoO Del Chivo., Sarah Thompson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is concerned with how a community could allow and even participate in its own subjection by a brutal dictator. I examine the representations of dictatorial power in two Latin American novels: El otoo del patriarca by Gabriel Garca Mrquez and La fiesta del chivo by Mario Vargas Llosa. I present an examination of the creation and dissemination of a public image that the dictator uses to affirm his power and to subject his people. I believe this to be the key mechanism that contributes to the public's belief that the dictator has either a right to rule, or …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Biochemical Networks Computer Algebra Application To The Escherichia Coli Trypyophan Operon, Casey Henderson Jan 2011

Sensitivity Analysis Of Biochemical Networks Computer Algebra Application To The Escherichia Coli Trypyophan Operon, Casey Henderson

Theses & ETDs

Operons are collections of genetic elements including protein coding genes and regulatory binding sites. Operon dynamics can be described by a system of differential equations which define a set of relationships among variables and parameters. The collection of equations models regulation of gene expression in a cell. Mathematical techniques, such as sensitivity analysis, can be used to investigate possible regulatory mechanisms in these simulated biological networks. Sensitivity analysis explores how the network variables, in this case concentrations, respond to small changes in network parameter values, such as reaction rates. The Computer Algebra System Maple generates the sensitivity equations, which are …

A Review Of Dispersant Use In Response To The British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Bryant Turffs Jan 2011

A Review Of Dispersant Use In Response To The British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Bryant Turffs

Theses & ETDs

The British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon oil spill was an unprecedented event due to the depth at which it occurred and the amount of oil discharged. Chemical dispersants, which break oil into droplets and facilitate diffusion into the water column, were applied to the oil spill to mitigate the damage caused to shoreline environments and surface dwelling organisms. Dispersants may also increase the rate at which oil is consumed by microbes. Due to the location of the oil discharge in the deep ocean, dispersants were also applied at the sea floor to enhance efficacy. The biological effects of chemically dispersed oil …
