Fascism And Forgiveness, Eleni J. Kametas-Hicks
Fascism And Forgiveness, Eleni J. Kametas-Hicks
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Leadership is a term often used in education and in the workplace. But the concept of servant-leadership "is often forgotten, and its principles are directly applicable to those who wish to lead" (Spears, 1995, p. 79). According to Robert Greenleaf, "servant-leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead" (Spears, 1995, p. 4). When I thought about the word leader, there were several words that came to mind. Words such as powerful, assertive, and manager. These were the words traditionally found in a resume, listed on …

Emmanuel Edeh: Inspiring Twenty-First-Century Africans To Serve-First, Peter O. Amah
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Edeh (1985) articulated a theory of being as mma-di-the good that is. This mma-di participates in the absolute goodness of God, who creates and sustains it. Every human being deserves sustenance and to have his/her dignity preserved. To serve the interests of mma-di as a priority, a leader devotes his/ her energy, resources, and life to prove in theory and practice that each individual, according to Ferch (2003), has "inherent worth, a dignity not only to be strived for, but beneath this striving, a dignity irrevocably connected to the reality of being human" (p. 2). It was with a similar …

Mothers' Ways Of Making It—Or Making Do?: Making (Over) Academic Lives In Rhetoric And Composition With Children, Kim Hensley Owens, Christine Peters Cucciarre, Deborah E. Morris, Lee Nickoson, Mary P. Sheridan
Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications
This article focuses on five women's experiences “making it” as rhetoricians with children. Expanding the definition of success Michelle Ballif, Diane Davis and Roxanne Mountford set forth in Women's Ways of Making It in Rhetoric and Composition, the article offers suggestions for moving toward more family-friendly academic structures, not least by recognizing that the seemingly individualistic idea of choice—such as the choice to have children—rests uneasily with the often invisible structures that shape and delimit choices. The authors call for increased visibility of and acceptance for a greater range of possibilities for “making it” in the field today.

Hurricane Katrina left in her wake one of America's oldest and greatest cities in shambles. In 2011, five years after the storm, New Orleans remains in a state of recovery. Statistics reveal many disaster-related facts attributable to the storm. Life stories, however, can open the windows to the soul, inviting us to better understand the human element of this tragedy. Employing a narrative case study methodology, this study delved into the life stories of three young adults who attended to residents only three weeks after they returned to their homes. Through a series of three interviews with each participant, it …

Role Of The Thrombospondin - Cd36 - Histidine Rich Glycoprotein Pathway In Tumor Growth And Angiogenesis, James Scott Hale
ETD Archive
Cancer is typically thought of as an uncommon disease, in which solid tumors require a blood supply in order to grow and metastasize. Interestingly, upon autopsy a large portion of elderly individuals display numerous non-vascularized lesions throughout their bodies. Thus, the angiogenic switch in the development of cancer presents an important therapeutic target. Previous work by our laboratory has established an interaction between CD36, Histidine Rich Glycoprotein (HRGP) and Thrombospondin 1 (TSP-1) in the modulation of angiogenesis. Briefly, endothelial cell receptor CD36 interaction with soluble or cell bound TSP-1 leads to the induction of an apoptotic signaling cascade in vascular …

A Rat Model Of Sleep Deprivation Prior To Traumatic Brain Injury, Steve G. Soehnlen
ETD Archive
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been called the "signature injury" of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers undergo a variety of stressors during their tours of duty that could complicate recovery from TBI, one of which is sleep deprivation (SD). In this study, we sought to create a rat model exploring the effects of prior REM sleep deprivation (RSD) on recovery from TBI-induced sensorimotor and cognitive deficits. Rats were deprived of REM sleep before they underwent a controlled cortical impact (CCI) to mimic a TBI. Forelimb sensorimotor function, hindlimb motor function, forelimb motor function, and spatial learning were assessed …
Algea Suspension Dewatering With An Inclined Gravity Settler, Jing Hou
Algea Suspension Dewatering With An Inclined Gravity Settler, Jing Hou
ETD Archive
Biofuel has been studied for several decades as a feasible substitute for petroleum, which may solve the energy crisis. Having a high oil content and growth rate, algae biofuels have received lots of attention recently, and have been considered as one of the most promising technologies to reduce the dependence of fossil fuels. In the process of producing algae biofuel, the dewatering process constitutes a significant part of the cost of the algae biofuel, impeding progress towards large-scale commercial use. An inclined settler utilizes gravity to separate algae cells from the fluid, with little energy consumption. The separation ability of …
The Efficacy Of Hippocampal Stimulation In Preventing Depressive Symptoms, Timothy B. Patrick
The Efficacy Of Hippocampal Stimulation In Preventing Depressive Symptoms, Timothy B. Patrick
ETD Archive
The hippocampus provides negative feedback for the Hypothalamic-Pituitary- Adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is responsible for producing a response to stressful stimuli. The hippocampus is sensitive to high levels of glucocorticoids (GCs), because of its large number of GC receptors. In times of severe stress, hippocampal function is inhibited and its control over the HPA axis is diminished, leading to hyperactivity of the adrenal glands as well as hypercortisolism, typical of depression. Long-term stress and depression can eventually lead to chronic impairments in cognitive ability, as well as structural damage in the hippocampus. Exercise and environmental enrichment stimulate significant …

Dietary Supplement Wastewater Treatment By Biological Methods, Xiangting Hou
ETD Archive
Dietary supplements, pre-mixed meal like Slim Fast, are part of most people's lives. Since dietary supplements have a high order of complex sugars, low-fat milk, and all kinds of nutrients, they bring hazards to the environment if discharged to water bodies without any proper treatment. Therefore, wastewater from dietary supplement gains much more attention at the present time. Dietary supplement wastewater contains amounts of organic compounds which may be bio- friendly and non-toxic. Biological treatment shows its strong advantages in dealing with this kind of wastewater. In this research, four kinds of Live Liquid Micro-organisms (LLMO) were used as the sources …
Diversification Through Discourse: A Bakhtinian View Of Homer Hickam's Red Helmet, Julia A. Wilson
Diversification Through Discourse: A Bakhtinian View Of Homer Hickam's Red Helmet, Julia A. Wilson
ETD Archive
Homer Hickam's 2007 book, Red Helmet tells the story of a New York business woman's (Song) transformation into a West Virginian coal miner. Red Helmet is a modern, commercial romance that fits into the category of Appalachian working-class literature. The introduction of this study details the characteristics of regional and Appalachian working-class literature and aligns the characteristics to the plot of Red Helmet. A discussion of Bakhtin's theories of heteroglossia, hybridization, language stratification, dialogism, and discourse laid the foundation for the analysis of Song's transformation from an outsider (a non-native of West Virginia) to an accepted and productive member of …

Examining Whether Social Factors Affect Listeners Sensitivity To Talker-Specific Information During Their Online Perception Of Spoken Words, Jessica L. Newell
Examining Whether Social Factors Affect Listeners Sensitivity To Talker-Specific Information During Their Online Perception Of Spoken Words, Jessica L. Newell
ETD Archive
McLennan and Luce (2005) found no significant cost associated with changing which talker produced a particular word from the first block of trials to the second (no talker effects) when participants responded relatively quickly (easy lexical decision), and that talker effects emerged when participants responded relatively slowly (hard lexical decision). In a lexical decision task, participants hear words and nonwords and reaction times to correct responses are measured. In the current study, we examined whether social factors would lead to talker effects in an easy lexical decision task. In Experiment 1, participants were told that they have a chance to …
Investigations Of Anatomical Connectivity In The Internal Capsule Of Macaques With Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kyle Andrew Ignatius Taljan
Investigations Of Anatomical Connectivity In The Internal Capsule Of Macaques With Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kyle Andrew Ignatius Taljan
ETD Archive
Understanding anatomical connectivity is crucial for improving outcomes of deep brain stimulation surgery. Tractography is a promising method for noninvasively investigating anatomical connectivity, but connections between subcortical regions have not been closely examined by this method. As many connections to subcortical regions converge at the internal capsule (IC), we investigate the connectivity through the IC to three subcortical nuclei (caudate, lentiform nucleus, and thalamus) in 6 macaques. We show that a statistical correction for a known distance-related artifact in tractography results in large changes in connectivity patterns. Our results suggest that care should be taken in using tractography to assess …

In 1850 the village and township of Newburgh, six miles southeast of Cleveland was a farming community sparsely populated by families who were predominantly of New England descent. Within two decades several iron and steel mills had been erected just north of the village, while a large state hospital for the mentally ill had been built just south of the village. The population of the area increased dramatically as English, Welsh, Irish, and finally Polish immigrants arrived to work in the mills. In 1873 the village of Newburgh and much of the surrounding township was annexed by the city of …
Intricate Rna : Rna Interactions In U12-Dependent Nuclear Pre-Mrna Splicing, Tupa Basu Roy
Intricate Rna : Rna Interactions In U12-Dependent Nuclear Pre-Mrna Splicing, Tupa Basu Roy
ETD Archive
Coding regions or exons of most human genes are interrupted by noncoding intervening regions or introns. Removal of nuclear precursor messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) introns by RNA splicing is an essential step in eukaryotic gene expression. Two types of nuclear pre-mRNA introns are known as U2-dependent or major type and U12-dependent or minor type. Nuclear pre-mRNA introns are removed by two distinct sets of ribonucleoprotein complexes or spliceosomes, which are formed by five small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) for each spliceosome. U6atac and U12 snRNAs are central to U12-dependent spliceosome and play essential roles in the removal of U12-dependent introns. U6atac and …

There have been a plethora of analyses on the effects of and brand image of advertising in video games, but a dearth of analyses simply examining the role advertising has played in video games over the years. This study seeks to add to the available research on this topic. This study has yielded a great amount of information which should have pre-dated any analysis of the effects of advertising in video games, or brand placement and recall, and certainly any analysis on purchase intent as a result of interacting or observing brand or product placement in video games. Not only …
Perspective Taking In Dyadic Interactions: Influences Of Cooperation And Competition On Third Person Representation Of Movement, Michael H. Summers
Perspective Taking In Dyadic Interactions: Influences Of Cooperation And Competition On Third Person Representation Of Movement, Michael H. Summers
ETD Archive
Similar processes between a third person representation and a first person representation may be at work in understanding the limitations of another. These processes may lead to errors in estimating the abilities of another by anchoring those estimates to one's own abilities. A study designed to test how interactive conditions may mediate these processes. It was hypothesized that, due to an increase in interdependence, an individual would show a higher degree of difference between his or her own abilities and those of another when cooperating, compared to non-interactive conditions. It was also hypothesized that competition, due in part to a …

Efficient Time Of Arrival Calculation For Acoustic Source Localization Using Wireless Sensor Networks, Prashanth G. Reddy
Efficient Time Of Arrival Calculation For Acoustic Source Localization Using Wireless Sensor Networks, Prashanth G. Reddy
ETD Archive
Acoustic source localization is a very useful tool in surveillance and tracking applications. Potential exists for ubiquitous presence of acoustic source localization systems. However, due to several significant challenges they are currently limited in their applications. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) offer a feasible solution that can allow for large, ever present acoustic localization systems. Some fundamental challenges remain. This thesis presents some ideas for helping solve the challenging problems faced by networked acoustic localization systems. We make use of a low-power WSN designed specifically for distributed acoustic source localization. Our ideas are based on three important observations. First, sounds emanating …
Measuring The Environmental Impact Of Embedded/Bankfull Culverts, Joseph A. Pavlick
Measuring The Environmental Impact Of Embedded/Bankfull Culverts, Joseph A. Pavlick
ETD Archive
Streams are dynamic systems constantly changing over time. The health of a stream system is tied to the amount of sedimentation occurring in a stream. The addition of roadway culverts into a stream has been shown to cause erosion and sedimentation problems if the culvert does not meet stream characteristics of slope, bankfull/width, and channel orientation. This has led to the design of embedded/bankfull culverts. In the State of Ohio, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Army Corps of Engineers now require the Ohio Transportation to install embedded/bankfull culverts at all stream locations during new roadway construction. …
Change Detection Ability In Naturalistic Scenes: Are Object Appearances Or Disappearances Easier To Detect When Disappearances Should Be More Noticeable?, Maria J. Donaldson
Change Detection Ability In Naturalistic Scenes: Are Object Appearances Or Disappearances Easier To Detect When Disappearances Should Be More Noticeable?, Maria J. Donaldson
ETD Archive
Onset primacy is a robust phenomenon in which appearance of new objects in a scene effectively captures observers' attention. The present study explored conditions under which object offsets may also capture observers' attention. We hypothesized that our visual attentional system is programmed by default to look for onsets of new objects. However, our attentional priority may be able to flexibly adapt to the detection of object offsets depending on what types of visual event better fulfills observers' behavioral goals. To test this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted in which participants were biased toward finding offset of an existing object. Results …

Hopeful Hostility: An Analysis Of The Evolution Of American Naturalism, Amonte Littlejohn
ETD Archive
American Naturalism has a reputation of being a reductive and often times violent genre, but in its brutality exists a lens to examine adverse social conditions and practices of modern and historical society. Evolved from its precursor in European Naturalism, American Naturalism would undergo adaptations to make the genre more relevant to the American audience, authors like Frank Norris and Stephen Crane each tailoring their naturalistic novels to cater to their respective times. Since then, the genre has gone as a style that is as difficult to define as it is to accept, American Naturalism receiving criticisms and detractions with …
