Exercise Preconditioning Provides Long-Term Protection Against Early Chronic Doxorubicin Cariotoxicity, David S. Hydock, Chia-Ying Lien, Brock T. Jenson, Carole M. Schneider, Reid Hayward

School of Sport & Exercise Science Faculty Publications

Acute doxorubicin (DOX) cardiotoxicity can be attenuated by exercise preconditioning, but little is known of whether this cardioprotection continues beyond 10 days post-DOX administration. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of exercise preconditioning on early chronic DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Male rats were randomly assigned to sedentary, treadmill, or wheel running groups. Treadmill and wheel running animals participated in a progressive treadmill training protocol or voluntary wheel running, respectively, for 10 weeks. Following the intervention, animals were further randomized to receive either DOX (sedentary + DOX, treadmill + DOX, wheel running + DOX) or saline (sedentary + saline, …

Farmers, Politics, And Accounting: The History Of Standard Values -- An Accounting Convenience Or Political Arithmetic?, Jill J. Hooks, Ross E. Stewart

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines accounting in the social, political, and economic context within which it operates. Specifically, the farming sector in New Zealand provides the context for studying the history of standard-value accounting. This accounting practice emerged with the support of accountants, farmers, and the state as the tax regime in New Zealand slowly moved to an income tax for farmers from 1915. The paper examines how accounting became a practice of political arithmetic, mediating the economic power of the farmers with the rest of the tax base of New Zealand. Standard-value accounting for livestock became a device that represented the …

A Health Assessment Of The Acacia Xanthophloea Woodlands Around Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Rachel C. White Jan 2011

A Health Assessment Of The Acacia Xanthophloea Woodlands Around Lake Naivasha, Kenya, Rachel C. White

Digitized Theses

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to assess the health of the Acacia xanthophloea woodlands that surround Lake Naivasha, Kenya, and examine how woodland health is correlated with adjacent land use. Field surveys were conducted in 26 woodlands around Lake Naivasha in 2010. Analysis of the size distribution of acacia trees showed that woodlands grow in even-aged stands. Recruits were abundant in areas of low canopy cover and high wildlife impacts, and absent in sites with high soil electrical conductivity. Heavy browsing stunted the growth of small trees and was positively correlated with acacia thorn length. Small and mid-sized …

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in North American men, with a reported 32,050 deaths in the U.S. alone for 2010; lung cancer is reported as the number one leading cause of death from cancer in both men and women in North America, its estimated death toll in the U.S. alone in 2010 is over 157,000. One method of treating prostate cancer patients nowadays is by Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy, a process where radioactive seeds are placed in or near the tumor site to kill cancerous cells. For lung cancer, brachytherapy has begun to attract …

Brain And Behaviour In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Serial Reversal Learning And Adult Mushroom Body Development, Caroline G. Strang Jan 2011

Brain And Behaviour In Bumblebees (Bombus Impatiens): Serial Reversal Learning And Adult Mushroom Body Development, Caroline G. Strang

Digitized Theses

This thesis explores learning in bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) and its relation to foraging and development of the mushroom bodies of the bee brain. The first experiment describes the performance of bees on a serial reversal task. Reversal learning requires animals to change their behavior with changes in reward contingencies and is a measure of behavioural flexibility. Results show that bumblebees are capable of improving in a serial reversal task. The second experiment explores the effects of foraging experience on bumblebee mushroom bodies. Mushroom body volume was compared in bees confined to the colony, bees actively foraging, and bees tested on …

Effects Of Prenatal Testosterone On Kndy- Gnrh Circuitry In A Sheep Model Of Pcos, Maria Cernea Jan 2011

Effects Of Prenatal Testosterone On Kndy- Gnrh Circuitry In A Sheep Model Of Pcos, Maria Cernea

Digitized Theses

Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and prenatal testosterone (T)-treated ewes show similar reproductive neuroendocrine defects, including reduced responsiveness to feedback control of GnRH secretion, suggesting alterations in the hypothalamic circuitry mediating control of reproduction. KNDy (kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin) neurons of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) play a critical role in relaying the influence of steroid hormones to GnRH neurons. We tested the hypothesis that prenatal T exposure alters the synaptic connections of KNDy cells and their connections to GnRH neurons by examining inputs to kisspeptin and GnRH neurons in control and prenatal T- treated adult ewes. Prenatal T-treated animals showed a …

Effects Of North American Ginseng On Sexual Behavior In Male Rats, Matthew Joseph Barnes Jan 2011

Effects Of North American Ginseng On Sexual Behavior In Male Rats, Matthew Joseph Barnes

Digitized Theses

Two North American ginseng extracts were used to test sexual behavior in healthy rats and pre-diabetic rats, with erectile dysfunction, after four weeks of oral administration. Behavioral tests assessed sexual performance while animal tissues were used to examine eNOS and nNOS protein and mRNA in central and peripheral sites known to control erectile function. Results show an improvement in erectile function during copulation in healthy rats with chronic treatment of ethanol extract of NA ginseng but not aqueous extract. In addition, eNOS and nNOS mRNA was increased in penile tissue and nNOS staining was increased in the paraventricular nucleus of …

Investigating The Time Course Of Propionic Acid- Induced Cognitive Deficits Using The Morris Water Maze, Jennifer Mepham Jan 2011

Investigating The Time Course Of Propionic Acid- Induced Cognitive Deficits Using The Morris Water Maze, Jennifer Mepham

Digitized Theses

Dietary and gastrointestinal factors may be associated with the development/worsening of autistic symptoms in a subset of patients. Propionic acid (PPA) is a metabolic byproduct of gut bacterial fermentation.

Intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusions of PPA in rodents produce transient behavioural and biochemical changes similar to those seen in autism. The permanence of the cognitive deficits associated with the PPA rodent model of autism was assessed using adult male rats in the Morris water maze (MWM).

Following an ICV regimen of PPA or vehicle (2x/day, 7 days), rats were tested in the MWM (acquisition) and then one week later for reversal. On …

Intracerebroventricular Propionic Acid Increases Locomotor Activity And Nose Pokes In Rats Tested In An Automated Hole-Board Apparatus: Dose Response Effects In An Animal Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Melissa M. Meeking Jan 2011

Intracerebroventricular Propionic Acid Increases Locomotor Activity And Nose Pokes In Rats Tested In An Automated Hole-Board Apparatus: Dose Response Effects In An Animal Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Melissa M. Meeking

Digitized Theses

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a cluster of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by abnormal social interactions, communication deficits, and repetitive and restricted behaviours. Propionic acid (PPA), a component of fatty acid metabolism, is endogenous to the human body, produced by enteric gut bacteria, and crosses both the gut-blood and the blood-brain barrier. Previous research has demonstrated that repeated intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusions of PPA in adult rats produce behavioural and neuropathological changes similar to those seen in ASD patients. The current studies further characterized this animal model, focusing on repetitive and perseverative behaviours, through the use of the hole-board apparatus. Adult male …

Melatonin, Aggression, And Social Dominance In Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile Atricapillus), Buddhamas Kriengwatana Jan 2011

Melatonin, Aggression, And Social Dominance In Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile Atricapillus), Buddhamas Kriengwatana

Digitized Theses

Non-breeding black-capped chickadees form linear dominance hierarchies in the winter. Dominants establish and maintain status by repeatedly directing aggression towards subordinates despite having regressed testes and likely also basal levels of testosterone. Melatonin has been shown to facilitate aggression in some animals under non-breeding conditions. The first aim of this study was to investigate whether melatonin was associated with aggressive black-capped chickadee dominant-subordinate interactions during the establishment of dominance status. The second aim of this study was to determine whether exogenous melatonin affected aggressive vocalizations more than non-aggressive vocalizations. Plasma melatonin was not significantly correlated to aggression. Moreover, exogenous melatonin …

The Effect Of Aerobic And Resistance Exercise On Insulin Sensitivity And Glycemic Control In Type 1 Diabetic Rats, Katherine Hall Jan 2011

The Effect Of Aerobic And Resistance Exercise On Insulin Sensitivity And Glycemic Control In Type 1 Diabetic Rats, Katherine Hall

Digitized Theses

Type 1 Diabetic Mellitus (T1DM) patients can develop insulin insensitivity partially due to the daily requirement of exogenous insulin. Regular exercise has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity (IS) partially though the increased expression of skeletal muscle GLUT4 and insulin receptor (IR) content. Although exercise is beneficial in increasing IS, exercise presents a problem in the T1DM population, as it leads to uncontrolled fluctuations in blood glucose (BG) concentrations. This study examined the effect of aerobic and resistance training exercises on IS and fluctuations in BG concentrations in T1DM rats. Fifty animals were randomly divided into 5 groups; control (C), …

The Effect Of Connexin43 On The Development Of Skeletal Muscle Using Cell And Animal Models Of Oculodentodigital Dysplasia, Pasquale Vecchio Jan 2011

The Effect Of Connexin43 On The Development Of Skeletal Muscle Using Cell And Animal Models Of Oculodentodigital Dysplasia, Pasquale Vecchio

Digitized Theses

Skeletal muscle development involves the differentiation of myoblasts into myotubes; likely involving connexins (Cx) and the gap junctional exchange of secondary messengers and metabolites. Many patients with oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD), a rare primarily autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding Cx43, become less ambulatory with aging and exhibit symptoms that may reflect defects in skeletal muscle development, maintenance, and repair. In this study, the role of Cx43 in skeletal muscle development was examined in differentiation-competent L6 myoblasts and two ODDD- linked Cx43-mutant mouse lines. Undifferentiated L6 myoblasts exhibited high levels of Cx43-based gap junctions which were inhibited …

The Effects Of Bone Grafting On Calvarial Healing In A Rat Model, Stephanie M. Reid Jan 2011

The Effects Of Bone Grafting On Calvarial Healing In A Rat Model, Stephanie M. Reid

Digitized Theses

It remains unknown whether bone grafting influences dural osteogenesis following cranial reconstruction. The purpose o f this study is to 1) develop a model to study non-vascularized and vascularized calvarial grafts; and 2) compare effects o f bone graft vascularity on calvarial healing.

Thirty-six rats were divided into Control and Experimental (EXP) groups. Parietal defects were left empty on one side. Contralateral defects in Control, EXP1, and EXP2 were partially filled with native parietal bone (sham), non-vascularized, and vascularized bone grafts, respectively. Healing parameters were measured from serial micro-CT scans.

Greater bone production resulted in Control and EXP2 versus EXP1 …

Tryptophan Metabolism And Cd8+T-Cell Function, Mateusz Rytelewski Jan 2011

Tryptophan Metabolism And Cd8+T-Cell Function, Mateusz Rytelewski

Digitized Theses

L-tryptophan is the least common essential amino acid and is necessary for cellular proliferation. In the context of immune regulation, lack of tryptophan in tissue microenvironments and the production of its bioactive metabolites has been implicated as an immunosuppressive phenomenon. The rate limiting enzyme in tryptophan degradation is indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase (EDO), which metabolizes tryptophan along the L- kynurenine pathway. When induced by interferon signaling, IDO promotes anergy and apoptosis in naive T-cells, and enables the differentiation and activation of T-regulatory cells. However, the role that IDO and tryptophan metabolism play in epitope specific CD8+T-lymphocyte (CTL) function has not yet …

Touch My Desire: Traversing The Corpore(A)L From Freud To Lacan, Marshall R. Smith Jan 2011

Touch My Desire: Traversing The Corpore(A)L From Freud To Lacan, Marshall R. Smith

Digitized Theses

Our principal inquiry revolves around the issue o f touch and its relationship to psychoanalysis, the latter of which traditionally relies on the medium of speech in order to apprehend unconscious expressions. Why did psychoanalysis develop according to this principle, and how was touch understood within this paradigm? In providing a psychoanalytic account o f touch, our analysis engages these questions by reviewing the historical and cultural contexts out of which psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud, emerged as a therapeutic praxis. Shifting from a predominantly historical and technical account of psychoanalysis, we then consider the theoretical works of Freud in …

The Study Of Sigma Factors O5816 And C7615 In Bacillus Cereus, Ryan Daniel Lum-Tai Jan 2011

The Study Of Sigma Factors O5816 And C7615 In Bacillus Cereus, Ryan Daniel Lum-Tai

Digitized Theses

The Gram-positive and ubiquitous bacterium Bacillus cereus is an emerging human and animal pathogen, and is capable of adapting to numerous extracellular stresses such as the low pH environment of the gastrointestinal tract. One mechanism B. cereus might utilize to regulate the acid-tolerance response system is through alternative sigma factors: proteins that bind and direct RNA polymerase to promoter- specific genes. A previous study found that alternative sigma factors c5816 and o7615 were induced dramatically at low pH, but it was unclear whether these sigma factors mediated an acid-tolerance response. Here, molecular tools were developed to further study these a …

Prenatal Testosterone Excess Decreases Neurokinin 3 Receptor (Nk3r) And Its Colocalization With Kisspeptin In The Ovine Arcuate Nucleus: Impact Of Changes In Receptor Expression In An Animal Model Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos), Taeeun Ahn Jan 2011

Prenatal Testosterone Excess Decreases Neurokinin 3 Receptor (Nk3r) And Its Colocalization With Kisspeptin In The Ovine Arcuate Nucleus: Impact Of Changes In Receptor Expression In An Animal Model Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos), Taeeun Ahn

Digitized Theses

Neurokinin B (NKB) acting via the neurokinin-3-receptor (NK3R) plays a critical role in neuroendocrine control of mammalian reproductioa In prenatal testosterone (T) treated sheep, a model of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), decreased NKB in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) may underlie reproductive neuroendocrine defects. We hypothesized that, in addition to NKB, its receptor, NK3R would also be decreased in prenatal T-treated sheep. NK3R-positive cells were observed in multiple hypothalamic nuclei, but prenatal T decreased NK3R only in the ARC. Dual-label immunocytochemistry revealed the decrease to be due, in part, to decreased colocalization within ARC kisspeptin cells that relay hormonal signals …

Problem-Solving:Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung., James W. Erikson Jan 2011

Problem-Solving:Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung., James W. Erikson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to replicate and expand two experimental procedures that have been fundamental to the understanding of problem solving and rigidity: functional fixedness and effects of Einstellung. Functional fixedness can be described as an instance in which negative transfer occurs and there is perceptual “blindness” to the versatility of an object. Einstellung is the tendency to utilize a more complicated and habitually primed procedure at the expense of simpler methods. Results were analyzed to identify individuals resistant to these natural effects and to determine the non-clinical personality factors as assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI, …

Edmund Burke’S Aims In Publishing Reflections On The Revolution In France (1790), Stephen Carruthers

Articles

In this paper, I examine three critical aspects of Burke's beliefs, principles, and political judgment at the time of the outbreak of the French Revolution and examine how they assist in explaining different and less public strands in his motivation to publish the Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790): his views on religion and in particular his attitude to Dissenters; the state of his political career and inf1uence in 1789 as a semi-detached member of the Foxite Whigs; and finally how he saw the publication of the ideas and arguments in the Reflections as a necessary step to maintain …

Bridging The “Excluded Middle”: The Case Of Brazilian Evangelical Missionaries Serving Among Arab-Muslims, Edward L. Smither Jan 2011

Bridging The “Excluded Middle”: The Case Of Brazilian Evangelical Missionaries Serving Among Arab-Muslims, Edward L. Smither

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Since Paul Hiebert first challenged missiological reflection with his notion of the “excluded middle,” missiologists and practitioners from the West have been forced to face the deficiencies of a rationalistic worldview; especially when serving in animistic contexts. Hiebert, Bill Musk, Rick Love, and others have further asserted that Western missionaries serving among Folk Muslims need to be better equipped to minister to the felt needs of their host peoples. While the literature and evidence of missionary practice suggest that North Americans and Europeans are working hard to climb “learning curve” dealing with this worldview. Missionaries from Brazil serving among Arab-Muslims …

Assessing Common Variance In Psychopathy Measures, Rochelle Taormina Jan 2011

Assessing Common Variance In Psychopathy Measures, Rochelle Taormina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Youth who demonstrate callous and unemotional traits along with aggressive antisocial behaviors are more likely than youth who do not display callous and unemotional traits to continue those acts into adulthood. Similarly there is support in the literature that the psychopathy construct measured in adulthood are evidenced in youth. For example, psychopathy traits measured by the Psychopathy Check List-Revised (PCL-R), noted as the gold standard assessment measure of psychopathy in adults, has been slightly modified for use with youth (i.e., Psychopathy Checklist - Youth Version [PCL-Y V]). The PCL-YV has been identified as a useful predictor of aggressive behaviors among …
