All animals route assimilated nutrients to their tissues where they are used to support growth or are oxidized for energy. These nutrients are probably not allocated homogeneously among the various tissue and are more likely to be preferentially routed toward some tissues and away from others. Here we introduce an approach that allows researchers to identify and compare nutrient routing among different organs and tissues. We tested this approach by examining nutrient routing in birds. House sparrows Passer domesticus were fed a meal supplemented with one of seven 13C-labeled metabolic tracers representing three major classes of macronutrients, namely, carbohydrates, …

Perpetuating The Marginalization Of Latinos: A Collateral Consequence Of The Incorporation Of Immigration Law Into The Criminal Justice System, Yolanda Vazquez
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
Latinos currently represent the largest minority in the United States. In 2009, we witnessed the first Latina appointment to the United States Supreme Court. Despite these events, Latinos continue to endure racial discrimination and social marginalization in the United States. The inability of Latinos to gain political acceptance and legitimacy in the United States can be attributed to the social construct of Latinos as threats to national security and the cause of criminal activity.
Exploiting this pretense, American government, society and nationalists are able to legitimize the subordination and social marginalization of Latinos, specifically Mexicans and Central Americans, much to …

Genetic factors influence adverse pregnancy outcome in both humans and animal models. Animal research reveals both the maternal and fetal genetic profiles are important for determining the risk of physical birth defects and prenatal mortality. Using a reciprocal-cross breeding design, we investigated whether the mother’s genes may be more important than fetal genes in determining risk for ethanol teratogenesis. Examination of possible synergistic genetic effects on ethanol teratogenesis was made possible by using two mouse strains known to be susceptible to specific malformations. Inbred A/J (A) and C57BL/6J (B6) mice were mated to produce four fetal genotype groups: the true-bred …

Valproic acid (VPA) is used worldwide to treat epilepsy, migraine headaches and bipolar disorder. However, VPA is teratogenic and in utero exposure can lead to congenital malformations. Using inbred C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice, we asked whether genetic variation could play a role in susceptibility to VPA teratogenesis. While B6 fetuses were more susceptible than D2 fetuses to digit and vertebral malformations, D2 fetuses were more susceptible to rib malformations. In a reciprocal cross between B6 and D2, genetically identical F1 mice carried in a B6 mother had a greater percentage of vertebral malformations following prenatal VPA exposure than …

Integration Of A Social Skills Training: A Case Study Of Children With Low Social Skills, Dong Hwa Choi, Shamah Md-Yunus
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
This study explores changes in children's social skills after a cognitive-social skills model intervention. The intervention was conducted over a period of 12 weeks within a regular preschool setting. Sixteen children including four considered to have low social skills participated in the study. Data analysis revealed that lhe four children w:ith low social skills demonstrated changes in social skills through positive play behaviours such as asking positive questions, offering suggestions, initiating play episodes, and sharing play materials, although they had limited ability to maintain play episodes.

"Chastisements Of A Heavenly Father": The Meaning Of The London Earthquakes Of 1750, Christopher Smyth
"Chastisements Of A Heavenly Father": The Meaning Of The London Earthquakes Of 1750, Christopher Smyth
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
When two earthquakes struck London early in 1750, terror and fury broke forth just as suddenly as the shaking of the earth. Clergymen, newspaper writers, and concerned laymen poured forth angry diatribes on the sins that brought England to the brink of ruin. Scores of sermons flowed off the presses, condemning the instinctive panic of the populace even as they added to it. Hundreds fled the city, certain it was about to be swallowed up. For a month, the religious meaning of the shocks swamped all other discussions, as Englishmen confronted the seemingly obvious fact that God was angry with …

Focusing on the combination of multi-cultural and historical influences from my personal life experiences, my creations of odd juxtapositions of space, complex pattern and new iconography in my paintings, reveal more than merely a representational image to a viewer. Although my subjects may vary from the anonymous to media celebrity, it is their relationship to me that influences the creation of my static animation and visual noise.

Development And Evaluation Of A Multimedia Intensive Web-Based Exercise Motivation Tool, Rico Jamaine Kornegay
Theses
A Multimedia-Intensive Web-Based Exercise Motivation Tool named WEMURCT (Web-Based Multi-User Randomized Circuit Training) was developed to utilize modern technology and web-based mediums to address the lack of motivation that an individual has when it comes to exercising regularly. This project was implemented using state-of-art rich internet application (RIA) technology. Popular RIA technologies that are optimized for creating multimedia-intensive applications are Flash by Adobe and Silverlight by Microsoft. In using Silverlight 4.0, we took advantage of multimedia data being embedded in a web-based application, which will be running in a web browser, to provide audio and visual instructions for the user …
Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant
Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant
Theses
Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is a bi-segmented, double stranded RNA virus that causes high mortality in young salmonid fish worldwide. As an obligate intracellular parasite, the first stage of the IPNV infectious cycle is the binding of the virus to a receptor in the host cell membrane. Recently, research has focused on identifying the IPNV receptor, and several scientists have reported binding of IPNV to a protein of approximately 220-250 kDa. The focus of this research was to investigate and reaffirm the identity of the IPNV receptor(s) for IPNV serotypes VR-299 and Sp in Chinook Salmon Embryo (CHSE-214) cells …

Tracing The Origins And Propagation Of African Easterly Waves And Mesoscale Convective Systems Using Pattern Recognition And Data Fusion, Chaunte' W. Lacewell
Theses
This thesis is focus on developing pattern recognition techniques to trace the origins and propagation of the Pre-Tropical Storm Debby (2006) African easterly waves (AEWs) and mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) using satellite imagery. The results are used to verify a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The pre-Debby MCSs’ movement and formation needs to be precisely and objectively tracked. These MCSs could be generated over mountains in North Africa, such as Ethiopian Highlands (EH), Darfur Mountains (DF), and Asir Mountains (AS), going through complicated splitting and merging processes. Thus, an objectively analyzed MCS movement is essential not only to help provide …

“How Can We Hope To Make A Living If Our Roots Are Cut?”: Track-Laying, Modernization, And People’S Livelihood In Republican Beijing, Jared Hall
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
In a post yesterday at this site, I discussed recent cleavages between the rapidly expanding Beijing Subway and segments of the public the system is meant to serve. In that post, I pointed to residents who voiced concerns about property seizures, safety lapses, and excessive noise from nearby tracks. When the subway corporation attempted to shut out community objections related to each of these issues, residents then utilized a common repertoire of protest that included petitions, visits to government offices, and public demonstrations.

Soft Power With Chinese Characteristics: Promoting Creative Industries While Maintaining Political Control, Thomas Glucksmann-Smith
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
On October 15-18th 2011 during the latest Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, China’s leaders discussed ways to make China a ‘culturally strong nation’ (文化强国) and defined strategies to enhance China’s international soft power. This meeting coincided with tax evasion charges laid against China’s world renowned artist Ai Weiwei—charges he now plans to challenge.
Ai Weiwei, recently described by Art Review as the ‘world’s most powerful artist’ would, in any other nation, be regarded as a perfect diplomat for his country’s cultural industries. But, for China’s CCP leaders Mr Ai’s political activism and provocative behaviour has gone too …

Lea Proteins During Water Stress: Not Just For Plants Anymore, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze, Mehmet Toner, Leaf Boswell, Daniel Moore
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are extremely hydrophilic proteins that were first identified in land plants. Intracellular accumulation is tightly correlated with acquisition of desiccation tolerance, and data support their capacity to stabilize other proteins and membranes during drying, especially in the presence of sugars like trehalose. Exciting reports now show LEA proteins are not restricted to plants; multiple forms are expressed in desiccation-tolerant animals from at least four phyla. We evaluate here the expression, subcellular localization, biochemical properties and potential functions of LEA proteins in animal species during water stress. LEA proteins are intrinsically unstructured in aqueous solution, but …
