Resilience And Leadership In Dangerous Contexts, Christopher Peterson, Michael J. Craw, Nansook Park, Michael S. Erwin

United States Army: Publications

Daniel B. Cnossen was born and raised in Topeka, growing up on a small farm. He spent his childhood reading, running, playing sports, and working on the farm. Cnossen enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in 1998. He had never before seen the ocean and did not know how to swim, but he asked his new friends at the academy to teach him; he would often skip lunch to spend time in the pool. Cnossen joined the Navy triathlon team to strengthen his swimming. By his senior year, he had been elected captain of the team, which he helped …

Recombinant Paraoxonase 1 Protects Against Sarin And Soman Toxicity Following Microinstillation Inhalation Exposure In Guinea Pigs, Manojkumar Valiyaveettil, Yonas Alamneh, Peter Rezk, Michael W. Perkins, Alfred M. Sciuto, Bhupendra P. Doctor, Madhusoodana P. Nambiar

United States Army: Publications

To explore the efficacy of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) as a catalytic bioscavenger, we evaluated human recombinant PON1 (rePON1) expressed in Trichoplusia ni larvae against sarin and soman toxicity using microinstillation inhalation exposure in guinea pigs. Animals were pretreated intravenously with catalytically active rePON1, followed by exposure to 1.2 X LCt50 sarin or soman. Administration of 5 units of rePON1 showed mild increase in the blood activity of the enzyme after 30 min, but protected the animals with a significant increase in survival rate along with minimal signs of nerve agent toxicity. Recombinant PON1 pretreated animals exposed to sarin or …

The Impact Of Single-Sex Education On Male And Female Gains In Mathematics And Reading At The Elementary Level In A Selected School In North Carolina, Lisa O'Neill Jan 2011

The Impact Of Single-Sex Education On Male And Female Gains In Mathematics And Reading At The Elementary Level In A Selected School In North Carolina, Lisa O'Neill

Education Dissertations and Projects

The gender gap in achievement and the increasing awareness of differences between male and female cognitive development have ignited a growing interest in single-sex education. No Child Left Behind legislation and amendments to Title IX legislation have increased the number of schools in America offering single-sex education.

This 2-year quasi-experimental explanatory mixed methods study explores the impact of single-sex education on an economically disadvantaged school's fifth-grade students' academic gains in mathematics and reading achievement in comparison to their peers in demographically similar coeducational classrooms in the same school.

Quantitative data were collected from standardized state test scores in reading and …

The Structural Organization And Functional Aspects Of The Olfactory Epithelium Of Tigerperch, Terapon Jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) (Perciformes: Terapontidae), Padmanabha Chakrabarti, Saroj Kumar Ghosh Jan 2011

The Structural Organization And Functional Aspects Of The Olfactory Epithelium Of Tigerperch, Terapon Jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) (Perciformes: Terapontidae), Padmanabha Chakrabarti, Saroj Kumar Ghosh

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The structure and function of different cells lining the olfactory epithelium in Terapon jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The olfactory rosette is oval in structure and consists of 18-20 primary lamellae arranged on a median raphe. A large part of the lateral surface of the olfactory lamella is covered with nonreceptor epithelium, whereas the receptor epithelium occupies the middle region. The sensory receptor epithelium is made up of receptor cells, rod cells, microvillar cells, labyrinth cells, and mucous cells. The nonsensory epithelium consists of ciliated supporting cells, mucous cells, and stratified epithelial cells. Different …

Antitrust Review Of The At&T/T-Mobile Transaction, Maurice E. Stucke, Allen Grunes

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

In this Essay, we review AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA, Inc., under federal merger law, under the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission’s 2010 Horizontal Merger Guidelines, and with a focus on possible remedies. We find, under a rule of law approach, that the proposed acquisition is presumptively anticompetitive, and the merging parties in their public disclosures have failed to overcome this presumption. Next we find that under the Merger Guidelines, there is reason to believe that the transaction may result in higher prices to consumers under several different plausible theories. Finally, we turn …

Behavioral Antitrust, Maurice E. Stucke, Amanda P. Reeves Jan 2011

Behavioral Antitrust, Maurice E. Stucke, Amanda P. Reeves

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

Competition policy is entering a new age. Interest in competition laws has increased world-wide, and the United States no longer holds a monopoly on antitrust policy. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the question for competition authorities is whether and to what extent does bounded rationality, self-interest and willpower matter.

This article explores how the behavioral economics literature will advance competition policy. With increasing interest in the United States and abroad in the implications of behavioral economics for competition policy, this Article first provides an overview of behavioral economics. It next discusses how the assumption of rational, self-interested profit-maximizers …

Meet Montana: News From The Last Best Place, Jackie Brennan Jan 2011

Meet Montana: News From The Last Best Place, Jackie Brennan

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

A place doesn’t need a post office to be identified as a town, but it definitely needs a bar. Why a bar? We understand that our state’s winters are long and bitter, and that wayfaring strangers invariably need a place to unwind. A bar has notably greater social promise for a wanderer than a post office, and financially, it’s just a more practical investment. It’s only logical to turn a profit when furnishing accommodations in the middle of nowhere, which is essentially what the majority of Montana is.

Jackie Brennan came to JMU "all the way from the great state …

Pulitzer Prize Photograph Brings Awareness-At A Price, Catherine Witko Jan 2011

Pulitzer Prize Photograph Brings Awareness-At A Price, Catherine Witko

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

In 1994, Kevin Carter submitted a photograph he had taken during a trip to Sudan to cover the civil war that was ravaging the country. He had no idea at the time that he would eventually win the coveted Pulitzer Prize. He had even less of an idea that soon after receiving the award, he would succumb to depression. Although it brought about Carter’s untimely death, the photograph showed the world a tragedy occuring in Sudan. It shattered the complacency that existed among people generally walled off from such struggles. It was a disturbing call to action to help those …

Transcend From The Depths, Erik Simmons Jan 2011

Transcend From The Depths, Erik Simmons

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Once born into poverty, the goal is simple and finite: survive, and if the opportunity arises, escape. This life of torment and sorrow becomes a reality that only you and those around you can comprehend. Many just embrace the grind, accepting that there is no alternative. There is no reprieve, no relief; poverty is relentless and seemingly perpetual in the eyes of the less fortunate. I watch this beast swallow my family’s community whole.

Erik Simmons is a freshman Psychology major, an initiate of Phi Sigma Pi, and a member of the JMU club wrestling team. He spends most of …

Nephi As Scribe, Brant A. Gardner

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Nephi was a younger son of a wealthy family. As one who might not inherit his father's business, it is possible that he was trained for another profession. One of the high-status professions open to him would have been a scribe. Beyond the fact that Nephi produced at least three written works (1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, and the nonextant large-plate book of Lehi), there are other evidences in his writing that betray the kind of traning scribes received. His early professional training may have been an important preparation for his later role in establishing his people as a true people …

Reconsidering Competition, Maurice Stucke Jan 2011

Reconsidering Competition, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

In light of the financial crisis and the empirical findings from behavioral economics, policymakers should reconsider the fundamental question: What is competition? Only in understanding competition can one understand what competition can or cannot achieve under certain circumstances.

This Article reexamines one premise of competition, namely the extent to which firms, consumers, and the government are rational and act with perfect willpower. In varying this assumption, the Article maps four scenarios of competition.

Competition authorities should revisit their conception of competition, including the underlying assumptions, to better understand the competitive dynamics in different industries. In engaging in this review, competition …

Object-Based Epistemology At A Creationist Museum, Paul J. Wendel Jan 2011

Object-Based Epistemology At A Creationist Museum, Paul J. Wendel

Education Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

In a regional young-earth creationist museum, objects are presented as if they speak for themselves, purportedly embodying proof that the earth is less than 10,000 years old, that humans have lived on earth throughout its history, and that dinosaurs and humans lived simultaneously. In public lectures, tours, and displays, museum associates emphasize direct observation over inference or theory. These emphases resonate closely with the "object-based epistemology" of the late nineteenth century described in Steven Conn's "Museums and American Intellectual Life, 1876-1926." In Conn's description, museum objects, artfully arranged and displayed, were intended to …

Modeling Habitat Associations For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) At Multiple Scales In Northeastern North America, Anne Kuhn, Jane Copeland, John Cooley, Harry Vogel, Kate Taylor, Diane Nacci, Peter V. August

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Common Loon (Gavia immer) is considered an emblematic and ecologically important example of aquatic-dependent wildlife in North America. The northern breeding range of Common Loon has contracted over the last century as a result of habitat degradation from human disturbance and lakeshore development. We focused on the state of New Hampshire, USA, where a long-term monitoring program conducted by the Loon Preservation Committee has been collecting biological data on Common Loon since 1976. The Common Loon population in New Hampshire is distributed throughout the state across a wide range of lake-specific habitats, water quality conditions, and levels of …
