The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers Jan 2010

The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers

Honors Theses

This thesis studies The Merchant of Venice with particular regards to the role of social bonds in the community of the play and in the actions of the characters. These bonds serve as ties that connect the characters to each other and also to the dominant social structure of their world—a structure that is patriarchal, class-based, and ostensibly Christian. The following chapters focus on four types of bonds that are especially vital to the play: those relating to law, gender, classes, and religion. These bonds manifest themselves in different areas of life, but they are all rooted in the workings …

Droplet Pinch Off Dynamics In Viscoelastic Fluid, Andrew Jonathan Thurber Jan 2010

Droplet Pinch Off Dynamics In Viscoelastic Fluid, Andrew Jonathan Thurber

Honors Theses

The rate at which fluid streams condense into droplets and separate is, in general, not linear with respect to time. Numerous Newtonian fluids have been studied and modeled, and the general form of such droplet pinches is that the radius of the narrowest portion of the stream collapses to a singularity as a function of time prior to pinch raised to a power <1. This experiment examines the case of a non-Newtonian fluid composed of various concentrations of CTAB and NaSal, to determine if the time scaling of droplet pinch varies with the concentration of the fluid and if the fluid’s elasticity affects this collapse. To investigate this, a high speed camera with a macro lens operating at 15kfps (15,000 frames per second) was positioned in front of a clear tube, over which a pipette of the solution was suspended. The fluid was then slowly released to form droplets, and the recorded images were analyzed using a computer program written by Dr. Joseph Gladden. The results show that as concentration of the micellar fluid increases, the exponent of the time scaling decreases. This shows that wormlike micellar fluids do not follow scaling trends of Newtonian fluids, and further theoretical work is needed.

Sidewalks Matter: A Transportation Policy Study And Plan For Sidewalks In Clinton, Ms, Elizabeth Jayne Joseph Jan 2010

Sidewalks Matter: A Transportation Policy Study And Plan For Sidewalks In Clinton, Ms, Elizabeth Jayne Joseph

Honors Theses

The primary goal for this thesis is to provide the necessary research and analysis about the importance of sidewalks for Clinton, Mississippi, so that the city will have a plan and a study to support the implementation of a comprehensive sidewalks construction project. This thesis is grounded in theory and recent research on sidewalks. After establishing the theoretical and empirical arguments in favor of sidewalks as a significant transportation policy concern, I outline a three-phase plan for constructing sidewalks in Clinton. The plan delineates the three phases based on specific roads’ varying degrees of importance to community life. Following the …

Investigating The Effects Of Antioxidant Vitamins On The Immunocompetence Of Domestic Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo) Infected With Coccidian Parasites, Joseph Griffin Orr Jan 2010

Investigating The Effects Of Antioxidant Vitamins On The Immunocompetence Of Domestic Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo) Infected With Coccidian Parasites, Joseph Griffin Orr

Honors Theses

Vitamins are organic compounds essential for healthy metabolism and growth. Additionally, some vitamins also function as antioxidants. In particular, the antioxidant vitamins A (p-carotene) and E (a-tocopherol) are known to enhance the immune response of many animals as well as humans. However, there is relatively little research linking these immune-enhancing effects to domestic turkeys facing parasitic infections, such as coccidiosis. Coccidiosis in birds is expensive to treat, costing the worldwide poultry industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are protozoans that parasitize poultry via the intestinal tract, causing deleterious effects to survival such as lesioning, …

Transnational Mass Claim Processes (Tmcps) In International Law And Practice, Arturo J. Carrillo, Jason Scott Palmer Jan 2010

Transnational Mass Claim Processes (Tmcps) In International Law And Practice, Arturo J. Carrillo, Jason Scott Palmer

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article recognizes a growing overlap in the literature between international mass claims processes (“IMCPS”) and transitional justice claims processes (“TJCPs”), i.e. domestic reparations programs adopted by successor governments in the wake of mass atrocity. This convergence is reflected in a number of recent publications in both fields that promote the comparative analysis of IMCPs and TJCPs, which in turn, leads to the conclusion that the two processes share a number of analogous characteristics. Commentators tend to view these ostensibly shared traits as a natural source of “best practices” or “lessons” transferable between mass claims procedures in the international and …

Fitgerald's American Dream: It Happens To One, Not The Ninety-Nine, Cara Kathleen Troiani Jan 2010

Fitgerald's American Dream: It Happens To One, Not The Ninety-Nine, Cara Kathleen Troiani

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the American Dream in his fiction and how he establishes the inequality of the class system as the force which ruins the American Dream. Since we normally perceive America to be a land of opportunity and a land of equality, we often overlook the hierarchy of social classes in America. By describing the American elite’s aristocratic-like beliefs and behaviors and, in some works, transporting the wealthy Americans to Europe, Fitzgerald compares the social system in America to the rigid class structures of Europe. It is the European-like view of class in Fitzgerald’s …

Nature's Bastards: Hybridity, Grafting And Miscegenation In The Renaissance Imagery, Erin Elaine Doctor Jan 2010

Nature's Bastards: Hybridity, Grafting And Miscegenation In The Renaissance Imagery, Erin Elaine Doctor

Honors Theses

In this thesis I examined the various perceptions and permutations of hybridity in the context of a collective Renaissance imagination. The success of this thesis depends on the adherence to and analysis of a clear definition of hybridity, both real and metaphorical, as established in the introduction. Once this definition was established, I considered the implications of hybridity on a collection of Renaissance bodies, exemplified in the vegetable bodies of the garden and the social group of the gypsies. By using an extensive sample of primary sources, including plays, contemporaneous popular manuals and guidebooks, short stories, laws, edicts, paintings and …

Tennesse Williams' Web Of Deception In The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Holly Nicole Henning Jan 2010

Tennesse Williams' Web Of Deception In The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Holly Nicole Henning

Honors Theses

While many themes appear in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the theme of deception emerges as one of the most prominent. To determine exactly how deceit impacts the lives of the characters in each play, an analysis of deception from both a psychological and philosophical standpoint is given. Based on the findings of this analysis, Williams effectively employs three general categories of deception in his plays, including deception with self-awareness, deception of others requiring deception of the self and self-deception regardless of another’s presence. Williams also implements one of …

A Hidden Wwii History: How New Media Reporting By Cnn.Com Changed A Legacy, Elizabeth Claire Vowell Jan 2010

A Hidden Wwii History: How New Media Reporting By Cnn.Com Changed A Legacy, Elizabeth Claire Vowell

Honors Theses

This project retells the hidden history of 350 American POWs who were forced to serve as slave laborers in Germany during WWII, and how these men received recognition in 2009 through the online reporting and reader audience participation of CNN.com. Though traditional platforms produced information on the subject, it took an age of instant communication to fully break the story to the American public. This project looks at why and how online and participatory journalism created an impact that changed a legacy. Information on the history of the soldiers was gathered using books and a documentary published on the subject …

Bespoke Custom, Edward T. Swaine Jan 2010

Bespoke Custom, Edward T. Swaine

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Curtis Bradley and Mitu Gulati’s stimulating article, “Withdrawing from International Custom,” argues for a view of customary international law (CIL) in which unilateral exit rights may be revitalized. This response suggests that Bradley and Gulati’s understanding of the intellectual history of CIL is contestable and that, they tend both to understate the novelty of their approach and overstate the rigidity of the views to which they react. Their tentativeness in endorsing exit options makes it difficult to assess the normative implications of their position, but their argument notably lacks a comprehensive consideration of alternative lawmaking forms.

Affectivity And The Nature Of The Sage: Gleanings From A Tang Daoist Master, Alan Kam Leung Chan Jan 2010

Affectivity And The Nature Of The Sage: Gleanings From A Tang Daoist Master, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This essay explores the place of qing in conceptions of the nature and being of the sage, focusing on the Tang Daoist master Wu Yun. What it seeks to show is that assumptions about the attainability of “sagehood” and the “nature” (xing) of human beings inform the interpretation of qing. In this context, the idea that the sage is quintessentially wuqing, marked by the absence of desire and emotions, will be examined. I will close with a comparative note on a Confucian account of the same period—namely, the Fuxing shu by Li Ao.

Design And Evaluation Of A Suspension Seat To Reduce Vibration Exposure Of Subway Operators: A Case Study, Pierre Marcotte, Sylvie Beaugrand, Jérôme Boutin, Christian Larue

Études primaires

Subway operators have complained about discomfort caused by whole-body vibration. To address this problem, a suspension seat with extensive ergonomic features has been adapted to the confined space of the subway operator cab. The suspension was modified from an existing suspension in order to reduce the dominant frequency of the subway vertical vibration (2.4 Hz). The suspension seat has been extensively tested on a vertical hydraulic shaker. These tests have shown that the SEAT value was lower for a higher vibration level, for higher subject weight, and for the suspension adjusted at median height. The seat also produces a lower …
