Endohelminths Of A Snake Mackerel, Gempylus Serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), From The Gulf Of Mexico, Charles K. Blend, Norman O. Dronen, James S. Franks, George W. Benz

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Endohelminths are reported from a female snake mackerel, Gempylus serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), captured from a depth of 61 m in the Gulf of Mexico 140 km south of the mouth of Mobile Bay, AL, in August 1998. A diverse endohelminth parasite fauna was found: 29 plerocercoid type I tetraphyllideans from the lower intestine; 4 didymozoid metacercariae allocated to the collective group Monilicaecum and one didymozoid metacercaria of the collective group Torticaecum from the pyloric cecum; one juvenile Gonocerca phycidis from the stomach; and 5 larvae (L3 stage) comprising 3 species of Anisakis from the pyloric cecum. These nematodes were identified …

Recruitment And Colonization Of Macroalgae To A Newly Constructed Rocky Intertidal Habitat In The Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Ryan L. Fikes, Roy L. Lehman Jan 2010

Recruitment And Colonization Of Macroalgae To A Newly Constructed Rocky Intertidal Habitat In The Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Ryan L. Fikes, Roy L. Lehman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Marine macroalgal assemblages on artificial structures play an important ecological role in coastal and estuarine ecosystems and may supplement natural communities in nearby waters. The rocky jetties of Packery Channel, located near Corpus Christi, Texas represent a recent addition of hard structure for colonization in the northwest Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this research was to monitor the initial immigration of macroalgal species during the first year of colonization and determine the effects of wave energy on recruitment. Ten sampling sites were established along the offshore portion of the new Packery Channel jetties. Samples were taken bimonthly from along …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

New information for the kalliapseudid Tanaidacea occurring in the northwestern Atlantic is presented and discussed, including data on range extensions and new depth ranges for 4 species. The taxa studied came from the shelf and coastal waters of the southeastern United States, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. The occurrence of Mesokalliapseudes bahamensis Sieg is extended from the Bahamas and Belize to the coastal waters of East and Gulf coasts (South Carolina to West Florida). The range of Psammokalliapseudes granulosus Brum is expanded northward into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and new locality records for this species are established for Tobago and …

Evaluating Management Actions For Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, In Mississippi With An Age-Structured Projection Model, Richard S. Fulford, J. Read Hendon Jan 2010

Evaluating Management Actions For Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, In Mississippi With An Age-Structured Projection Model, Richard S. Fulford, J. Read Hendon

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, is an important recreational fishery in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is the most sought after gamefish in coastal Mississippi. The management of C. nebulosus is state-specific, and unlike other similarly managed species, data on both population structure and movement support the existence of local sub-stocks. It is important for each state to clearly examine its own sub-stock in the context of its own state fishery in order to properly manage for local sustainability. We used an age-structured assessment model to examine the status (1993–2005) of the Mississippi C. nebulosus population …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Within the western North Atlantic Ocean there are at least 4 genera and 5 species of chimaeroids occurring in deep waters generally associated with outer continental slopes or areas of high bathymetric relief (Didier 2002; Didier 2004). Two chimaeroids, Chimaera cubana and Hydrolagus alberti, are known to be indigenous to the Caribbean Sea in waters associated with the Greater and Lesser Antilles. While H. alberti occurs throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, C. cubana is thought to be endemic to an area bounded by Cuba and Colombia (IUCN 2009). These two chimaeras are readily differentiated by …

Studies Into Cytauxzoon And Helminth Infections Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) Of Northwest Arkansas, Emily Hickman, David Kreider, Chris Tucker, Jana Reynolds, Jeremy Powell, Tom Yazwinski

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Cytauxzoon felis and gastrointestinal helminth infections in bobcats (Lynx rufus) of Northwest Arkansas, an area known to have numerous cases of cytaux in domestic cats. Sixty bobcat carcasses were collected from trappers located in Mulberry and Decatur, Arkansas. Blood samples from the hearts were used to isolate Cytauxzoon DNA. Next, a polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) procedure coupled with gel-electrophoresis assay for the 18s region of extracted DNA were used to determine the presence of the protozoan in the bobcats at the time of harvest. Out of the 60 …

Warped Product Semi-Slant Submanifolds In Kenmotsu Manifolds, Mehmet Atçeken Jan 2010

Warped Product Semi-Slant Submanifolds In Kenmotsu Manifolds, Mehmet Atçeken

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we research the existence or non-existence of warped product semi-slant submanifolds in Kenmotsu manifolds. Consequently, we see that there are no proper warped product semi-slant submanifolds in Kenmotsu manifolds such that totally geodesic and totally umbilical submanifolds of warped product are proper semi-slant and invariant (or anti-invariant), respectively.

On Weakly M-Supplemented Primary Subgroups Of Finite Groups, Long Miao, Wolfgang Lempken

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A subgroup H of a group G is said to be weakly M-supplemented in G if there exists a subgroup B of G provided that (1) G=HB, and (2) if H_1/H_G is a maximal subgroup of H/H_G, then H_1B=BH_1

Statistical Convergence Of Max-Product Approximating Operators, Oktay Duman Jan 2010

Statistical Convergence Of Max-Product Approximating Operators, Oktay Duman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, using the notion of statistical convergence, we obtain various statistical approximation theorems for a general sequence of max-product approximating operators, including Shepard type operators, although its classical limit fails. We also compute the corresponding statistical rates of the approximation.

Transversal Lightlike Submanifolds Of Indefinite Sasakian Manifolds, Cumali̇ Yildirim, Bayram Şahi̇n Jan 2010

Transversal Lightlike Submanifolds Of Indefinite Sasakian Manifolds, Cumali̇ Yildirim, Bayram Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We study both radical transversal and transversal lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of distributions and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the induced connection on these submanifolds to be metric connection. We also study totally contact umbilical radical transversal and transversal lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds and obtain a classification theorem for totally contact umbilical transversal lightlike submanifolds.

Chaos In Product Maps, Nedi̇m Deği̇rmenci̇, Şahi̇n Koçak Jan 2010

Chaos In Product Maps, Nedi̇m Deği̇rmenci̇, Şahi̇n Koçak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We discuss how chaos conditions on maps carry over to their products. First we give a counterexample showing that the pro\-duct of two chaotic maps (in the sense of Devaney) need not be chaotic. We then remark that if two maps (or even one of them) exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, so does their product; likewise, if two maps possess dense periodic points, so does their product. On the other side, the product of two topologically transitive maps need not be topologically transitive. We then give sufficient conditions under which the product of two chaotic maps is chaotic in …

Finite Subquandles Of Sphere, Nüli̇fer Özdemi̇r, Hüseyi̇n Azcan Jan 2010

Finite Subquandles Of Sphere, Nüli̇fer Özdemi̇r, Hüseyi̇n Azcan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work finite subquandles of sphere are classified by using classification of subgroups of orthogonal group O(3). For any subquandle Q of sphere there is a subgroup G_Q of O(3) associated with Q. It is shown that if Q is a finite (infinite) subquandle, then G_Q is a finite (infinite) subgroup. Finite subquandles of sphere are obtained from actions of finite subgroups of SO(3) on sphere. It is proved that the finite subquandles Q_1 and Q_2 of sphere whose all elements are not on the same great circle are isomorphic if and only if the subgroups G_{Q_1} and G_{Q_2} …

On The Codifferential Of The Kähler Form And Cosymplectic Metrics On Maximal Flag Manifolds, Marlio Paredes, Sofia Pinzon Jan 2010

On The Codifferential Of The Kähler Form And Cosymplectic Metrics On Maximal Flag Manifolds, Marlio Paredes, Sofia Pinzon

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Using moving frames we obtain a formula to calculate the codifferential of the Kähler form on a maximal flag manifold. We use this formula to obtain some differential type conditions so that a metric on the classical maximal flag manifold be cosymplectic.

Traveling Wavefronts In A Single Species Model With Nonlocal Diffusion And Age-Structure, Xue-Shi Li, Guo Lin Jan 2010

Traveling Wavefronts In A Single Species Model With Nonlocal Diffusion And Age-Structure, Xue-Shi Li, Guo Lin

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper is concerned with the existence of monotone traveling wavefronts in a single species model with nonlocal diffusion and age-structure. We first apply upper and lower solution technique to prove the result if the wave speed is larger than a threshold depending only on the basic parameters. When the wave speed equals to the threshold, we show the conclusion by passing to a limit function.

Notes On Null Curves In Minkowski Spaces, Makoto Sakaki Jan 2010

Notes On Null Curves In Minkowski Spaces, Makoto Sakaki

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We show a correspondence between the evolute of a null curve and the involute of a certain spacelike curve in the 4-dimensional Minkowski space. Also we characterize pseudo-spherical null curves in the n-dimensional Minkowski space in terms of the curvature functions.

An Examination Of Underreporting Of Time And Premature Signoffs By Internal Auditors, Qianhua Ling, Michael D. Akers Jan 2010

An Examination Of Underreporting Of Time And Premature Signoffs By Internal Auditors, Qianhua Ling, Michael D. Akers

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

The passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) heightened the importance of internal controls and accordingly, a key control - the internal audit junction. Consequently, management and external auditors have both increased their reliance on internal auditors' work. While there has been considerable research regarding the impact of the underreporting of time and premature sign-offs on the external audit, there has only been one study that has examined the impact of these two items on the internal auditors' work. Such research is dated (1994) and prior to the passage of SOX. We surveyed members of the Institute of Internal …

Formation And Consequences Of Going Concern Opinions: A Review Of The Literature, Jodi L. Gissel Jan 2010

Formation And Consequences Of Going Concern Opinions: A Review Of The Literature, Jodi L. Gissel

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

Shortly after the passage of SAS No. 59, Asare (1990) summarized the evolution of research on the going concern opinion (GCO) in order to evaluate the Auditing Standards Board's assumptions regarding the signals sent to the market via the GCO. Over the past twenty years, researchers have continued to investigate the importance of GCOs. The authors objectives are to bring current the evolution of standards, regulations, and literature concerning GCOs, to synthesize a body of research that still presents inconsistent findings, and to suggest future research that could further our understanding of GCO formation and consequences. Given the large volume …

Foreign Direct Investment And Domestic Investment In The Host Country: Evidence From Panel Study, Miao Wang Jan 2010

Foreign Direct Investment And Domestic Investment In The Host Country: Evidence From Panel Study, Miao Wang

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines the impact of inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on host countries’ domestic investment. Utilizing data from 50 countries over the period of 1970 to 2004, we find that inward FDI has a negative contemporaneous effect on domestic investment, while the cumulative effect of FDI over time tends to be positive. In addition, we separately study FDI in Developed Countries (DCs) and Less Developed Countries (LDCs). The effect of contemporaneous FDI on domestic investment is negative in DCs, and the cumulative effect of FDI is neutral. Strong evidence suggests that the contemporaneous effect of FDI on domestic investment …

Braving Crocodiles With Kali: Being A Prawn Seed Collector And A Modern Woman In The 21st Century Sunderbans, Annu Jalais Jan 2010

Braving Crocodiles With Kali: Being A Prawn Seed Collector And A Modern Woman In The 21st Century Sunderbans, Annu Jalais

Socio-Legal Review

Globalisation has undoubtedly shaped popular conceptions of gender and society in innumerable ways. This article studies one such instance - the plight of tiger-prawn collectors in Sundarbans. The discovery of tiger- prawns - the 'living dollars of Sundarbans' - has certainly transformed the lives of women in the region beyond imagination. These women however have had to face strenuous attacks from many spheres. Based on her anthropological fieldwork, the author portrays the struggle of women in the area against patriarchy, traditional modes of exploitation and even urban notions of femininity. Braving crocodiles and even changing their religious allegiances, these women …

Heteroclinic Solutions To An Asymptotically Autonomous Second-Order Equation, Gregory S. Spradlin Jan 2010

Heteroclinic Solutions To An Asymptotically Autonomous Second-Order Equation, Gregory S. Spradlin

Mathematics - Daytona Beach

We study the differential equation ẍ(t) = a(t)V '(x(t)), where V is a double-well potential with minima at x = ±1 and a(t) →l > 0 as |t| → 1. It is proven that under certain additional assumptions on a, there exists a heteroclinic solution x to the differential equation with x(t) → -1 as t → -1 and x(t) → 1 as t → ∞. The assumptions allow l - a(t) to change sign for arbitrarily large values of |t|, and do not restrict the decay rate of |l -a(t)| as |t| → ∞ © 2010 Texas State University - …
