INTRODUCTION: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) DNA and protein are found in gliomas but not in normal brain or other primary brain tumors. The role of HCMV infection in glioma biology is unclear. While it is unlikely that HCMV infection causes glioma, viral proteins might impart a proliferative and antiapoptotic phenotype that confers a survival advantage. Does this oncomodulation translate into a clinically relevant effect in glioma cells? To answer this question, we compared the response of the U87IE1 and U87MG malignant glioma cell lines to temozolomide. U87IE1 cells are U87MG cells that have been genetically engineered to produce HCMV IE1 protein. …
Cheban Loops, J.D. Phillips
Cheban Loops, J.D. Phillips
Journal Articles
Left Cheban loops are loops that satisfy the identity x(xy · z) = yx · xz. Right Cheban loops satisfy the mirror identity (z · yx)x = zx · xy. Loops that are both left and right Cheban are called Cheban loops. Cheban loops can also be characterized as those loops that satisfy the identity x(xy · z) = (y · zx)x. These loops were introduced in [5]. Here we initiate a study of their structural properties. Left Cheban loops are left conjugacy closed. Cheban loops are weak inverse property, power associative, conjugacy closed loops; they are centrally nilpotent of …
F-Quasigroups Isotopic To Groups, J.D. Phillips
F-Quasigroups Isotopic To Groups, J.D. Phillips
Journal Articles
In [5] we showed that every loop isotopic to an F-quasigroup is a Moufang loop. Here we characterize, via two simple identities, the class of F-quasigroups which are isotopic to groups. We call these quasigroups FGquasigroups. We show that FG-quasigroups are linear over groups. We then use this fact to describe their structure. This gives us, for instance, a complete description of the simple FG-quasigroups. Finally, we show an equivalence of equational classes between pointed FG-quasigroups and central generalized modules over a particular ring.
Automated Theorem Proving In Quasigroup And Loop Theory, J.D. Phillips
Automated Theorem Proving In Quasigroup And Loop Theory, J.D. Phillips
Journal Articles
We survey all known results in the area of quasigroup and loop theory to have been obtained with the assistance of automated theorem provers. We provide both informal and formal descriptions of selected problems, and compare the performance of selected state-of-the art first order theorem provers on them. Our analysis yields some surprising results, e.g., the theorem prover most often used by loop theorists doesn’t necessarily yield the best performance.

Pendekatan Hermeneutik : Kajian Terhadap Pemikiran Muhammad Syahrur Dalam Buku Al-Kitab Wa Al-Qur'an Qira'ah Muasirah., Ahmad Zaki Mubarok
Student Works (2010-2019)
Hermeneutic is originally derived from Greek term Hermeneuein, this term was Hermeneutikos which contains three basic meanings, which are, revelation, explanation and interpretation. These meanings came to existence as hermeneutic is applied in studying the Koran in the 19th century, but then tensions arise between Muslim scholars as to which definition is deemed appropriate. This study aims to expose the hermeneutic approach observed and applied by a Middle-East scholar, Muhammad Syahrur in his literature of al-Kitab wa al-Qur’an Qira’ah Mu‘asirah as well as to verify hermeneutic position as one of the theoretical commentary when discussing the Holy Koran. This study …

Student Works (2010-2019)
Presently, many parents are neglecting their children’s early Islamic education due to limited knowledge in the importance of teaching aqidah to their children from birth. Parents lack in the knowledge of content of what to impart to their children and the most suitable approaches to teach in order to make them understand better. Thus, this research will discuss the basic of aqidah and the approaches of teaching for children between ages of 0 - 7 years. This research will focus on the concept of aqidah in general, followed by explanation about children’s development according to Islamic view and the choice …

Endohelminths Of A Snake Mackerel, Gempylus Serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), From The Gulf Of Mexico, Charles K. Blend, Norman O. Dronen, James S. Franks, George W. Benz
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Endohelminths are reported from a female snake mackerel, Gempylus serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), captured from a depth of 61 m in the Gulf of Mexico 140 km south of the mouth of Mobile Bay, AL, in August 1998. A diverse endohelminth parasite fauna was found: 29 plerocercoid type I tetraphyllideans from the lower intestine; 4 didymozoid metacercariae allocated to the collective group Monilicaecum and one didymozoid metacercaria of the collective group Torticaecum from the pyloric cecum; one juvenile Gonocerca phycidis from the stomach; and 5 larvae (L3 stage) comprising 3 species of Anisakis from the pyloric cecum. These nematodes were identified …

Recruitment And Colonization Of Macroalgae To A Newly Constructed Rocky Intertidal Habitat In The Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Ryan L. Fikes, Roy L. Lehman
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Marine macroalgal assemblages on artificial structures play an important ecological role in coastal and estuarine ecosystems and may supplement natural communities in nearby waters. The rocky jetties of Packery Channel, located near Corpus Christi, Texas represent a recent addition of hard structure for colonization in the northwest Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this research was to monitor the initial immigration of macroalgal species during the first year of colonization and determine the effects of wave energy on recruitment. Ten sampling sites were established along the offshore portion of the new Packery Channel jetties. Samples were taken bimonthly from along …
