A Paradigm For Effective Pre-College Classical Guitar Methodology: A Case Study Of Two Models Of Effective Instruction, Renthungo Merry Dec 2010

A Paradigm For Effective Pre-College Classical Guitar Methodology: A Case Study Of Two Models Of Effective Instruction, Renthungo Merry

Dissertations

Many classical guitar teachers of the past had stated that the field of classical guitar education in general was an area that was in need of re-evaluation in terms of proper teaching methodology, especially at the beginner level. However, the last twenty years have seen the steady growth and expansion of classical guitar education. Various factors have contributed to this, including new and innovative methods of teaching, the construction of better instruments, the proliferation of new music written specifically for the classical guitar, and the growth of guitar programs in elementary and secondary levels of instruction. The purpose of this …

Ultrafast Time Domain Optics Of Single-Cycle Laser Pulse Interaction With Materials, Ufuk Parali Dec 2010

Ultrafast Time Domain Optics Of Single-Cycle Laser Pulse Interaction With Materials, Ufuk Parali

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, interaction of an ultrashort single-cycle pulse (USCP) with a bound electron without ionization is studied for the first time. For a more realistic mathematical description of USCPs, Hermitian polynomials and combination of Laguerre functions are used for two different single-cycle excitation cases. These single-cycle pulse models are used as driving functions for the classical approach to model the interaction of a bound electron with an applied field. Two different new novel time domain modification techniques are developed for modifying the classical Lorentz damped oscillator model in order to make it compatible with the USCP excitation. In the …

Modeling And Simulation Of Tunable Photonic Crystals, Weiqing Yang Dec 2010

Modeling And Simulation Of Tunable Photonic Crystals, Weiqing Yang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Photonic crystals (PhCs) have wavelength scale periodically alternating refractive indexes. Photon in such structures is subject to strong scattering, experiencing distinctive redistribution of energy, yielding interesting properties such as photonic band gaps, field enhancement, strong nonlinear optic effects and photon confinement. The modified fields also alter the propagation of light beams. By proper setup, super collimation could be realized in PhCs where beams can travel long distance without spreading, while no waveguide structure is used. Redirection of light can extend the refraction to negative range, without violating physics rules. This distinguished phenomenon has been envisioned as the core mechanism for …

Incidence Of, Predictors For, And Mortality Associated With Malignant Ventricular Arrhythmias In Non-St Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients., Shuchita Gupta, Md, Gregg S. Pressman, Vincent M. Figueredo, M.D.

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The incidence of non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is increasing. Although life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias have been well-documented in patients with ST elevation MI (STEMI), their incidence and importance in NSTEMI have not been examined in similar detail. We examined the incidence, predictors, and mortality rates of ventricular arrhythmias in a cohort of NSTEMI patients undergoing an early invasive strategy.

METHODS: Consecutive patients admitted with NSTEMI who underwent cardiac catheterization within 48 h of admission were identified by chart review. Presence and type of ventricular arrhythmias and 30-day mortality were recorded. Malignant arrhythmias were defined as sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT, …

Gentility And Gender Roles Within The 18th-Century Merchant Class Of Newport, Rhode Island, Nicki Hise Dec 2010

Gentility And Gender Roles Within The 18th-Century Merchant Class Of Newport, Rhode Island, Nicki Hise

Graduate Masters Theses

The Capt. Thomas Richardson household rose to prominence in Newport, Rhode Island during the community’s golden age of prosperity in the 18th century when Newport quickly became one of the leading seaports in the New World. However, all prosperity halted due to the hardships and damage Newport suffered during the American Revolutionary War. Much of the city’s property and economic success was destroyed at the hands of occupying British troops, and the Rhode Island community was never able to fully recover. Like others in colonial Newport, Capt. Thomas Richardson achieved genteel status as a merchant, distiller, and slave ship owner …

Invariant And Coinvariant Spaces For The Algebra Of Symmetric Polynomials In Non-Commuting Variables, Francois Bergeron, Aaron Lauve Dec 2010

Invariant And Coinvariant Spaces For The Algebra Of Symmetric Polynomials In Non-Commuting Variables, Francois Bergeron, Aaron Lauve

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We analyze the structure of the algebra K⟨x⟩Sn of symmetric polynomials in non-commuting variables in so far as it relates to K[x]Sn, its commutative counterpart. Using the "place-action" of the symmetric group, we are able to realize the latter as the invariant polynomials inside the former. We discover a tensor product decomposition of K⟨x⟩Sn analogous to the classical theorems of Chevalley, Shephard-Todd on finite reflection groups.

Fertilization And Supplementation Strategies For Steers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures, Andrea K. Watson Dec 2010

Fertilization And Supplementation Strategies For Steers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures, Andrea K. Watson

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Since 2004, fertilizer prices have doubled due to increases in energy prices for production and increased demand for N fertilizer due to high grain prices. This leads to questioning the cost effectiveness of increasing forage production with N fertilizer. At the same time, an increase in ethanol production creates an increase in the production of by-products of the ethanol industry, such as distillers grains. Distillers grains have been shown to be an excellent feed for ruminants both as a supplement while grazing and as part of a complete diet in the feedlot. Distillers grains provide protein, fat, and highly digestible …

Strategies For Beef Cattle Adaptation To Finishing Diets, Ractopamine Hydrochloride Utilization, And Mature Size Genetic Selection, Marco G. Dib Dec 2010

Strategies For Beef Cattle Adaptation To Finishing Diets, Ractopamine Hydrochloride Utilization, And Mature Size Genetic Selection, Marco G. Dib

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A cattle finishing experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of intermittent feeding of Optaflexx compared to none or continuous feeding. Four treatments were evaluated, the negative control consisted of 63 days on the same diet without Optaflexx, wherea the positive control consisted of Optaflexx supplemented daily during the last 35 days before harvest. The 4-day intermittent treatment consisted of feeding Optaflexx for7 days, followed by 4 days of no Optaflexx, and the 7-day intermittent treatment 7 d on Optaflexx, followed by 7 days off. Regardless of the delivery pattern, feeding Optaflexx increased ADG, DMI, and live BW compared to negative …

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen Dec 2010

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen

Physics

Scalar diffraction theory is combined with beam-propagation techniques to investigate the projection of near-field diffraction patterns to spatial locations away from the aperture for use in optically trapping cold neutral alkali-metal atoms. Calculations show that intensity distributions with localized bright and dark spots usually found within a millimeter of the diffracting aperture can be projected to a region free from optical components such as a cloud of cold atoms within a vacuum chamber. Calculations also predict that the critical properties of the optical dipole atom traps are not only maintained for the projected intensity patterns but also can be manipulated …

Study Of Two Human Myotubularin Homologs (Atmtm1 And Atmtm2) In Arabidopsis, Yang Zhao Dec 2010

Study Of Two Human Myotubularin Homologs (Atmtm1 And Atmtm2) In Arabidopsis, Yang Zhao

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phosphatidylinositol 5 phosphate is appearing to play an important role in signal transduction as lipid second messenger. The synthesis of this lipid signal is mainly conducted by a group of phosphatase called myotubularins (MTM) which can dephosphorylate on the 3’s position of Phosphatidylinositol (3, 5) bi-phosphate. Mutations in active myotubularins lead to severe diseases in human. However, this essential family has been scarcely studied in plants. Recently, two myotubularins (AtMTM1 and AtMTM2) have been identified as the homologs of human MTM Related protein 2 (MTMR2) in Arabidopsis. While some evidence has been provided to suggest the function of AtMTM1, …
