Control Of Longitudinal Pitch Rate As Aircraft Center Of Gravity Changes, John Andres Cadwell Jr. Dec 2010

Control Of Longitudinal Pitch Rate As Aircraft Center Of Gravity Changes, John Andres Cadwell Jr.

Master's Theses

In order for an aircraft to remain in stable flight, the center of gravity (CG) of an aircraft must be located in front of the center of lift (CL). As the center of gravity moves rearward, pitch stability decreases and the sensitivity to control input increases. This increase in sensitivity is known as pitch gain variance. Minimizing the pitch gain variance results in an aircraft with consistent handling characteristics across a broad range of center of gravity locations.

This thesis focuses on the development and testing of an open loop computer simulation model and a closed loop control system to …

This thesis studies woven carbon fiber composites with and without double-edge notches in a series of static and fatigue tests performed on an Instron 8801 servo-hydraulic testing system.

Specimens were constructed of Advanced Composites Group product # LTM45EL woven carbon fiber pre-preg/epoxy and were cut to approximately 9-inch in length and 1-inch in width. Notches were cut into some of the specimens using a slitting saw blade …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles For Post Disaster Surveys, Thor Liland Larsen Dec 2010

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles For Post Disaster Surveys, Thor Liland Larsen

Master's Theses

In the current built environment, structures require regular observation and maintenance. Many of these structures can be quite challenging to evaluate. The required scaffolding, lifts, or similar access facilities can become quite costly to rent and construct, and can be a long term disturbance to those who use and manage the particular structure. Furthermore, there are situations where examination for the purpose of detailed analysis can be quite hazardous, if not entirely unsafe for humans. In a post-disaster environment traditional methods may not be safe or adequate for gaining access to parts of a structure that require observation or analysis. …

Effects Of Cloud-Induced Photovoltaic Power Transients On Power System Protection, Joel A. Nelson Dec 2010

Effects Of Cloud-Induced Photovoltaic Power Transients On Power System Protection, Joel A. Nelson

Master's Theses

As the world strives towards finding alternative sources of power generation, photovoltaic generation has become an increasingly prevalent alternative energy source on power systems world-wide. This paper studies the effects that incorporating photovoltaic generation has on the existing power systems and their power system protection schemes. Along with the addition of this emerging alternative energy source comes the volatility of PV power generation as cloud-cover produces erratic variations in solar irradiance and PV power production. Such variations in PV power may lead to unfavorable operating conditions and power system failures. The issues addressed in this paper include a study of …

Artificial Skin Tactile Sensor For Prosthetic And Robotic Applications, Ross James Miller Dec 2010

Artificial Skin Tactile Sensor For Prosthetic And Robotic Applications, Ross James Miller

Master's Theses

To solve the problem of limited tactile sensing in humanoid robotics as well as provide for future planned mechanical prostheses, an innovative tactile sensor system was created and embedded into two realistic-looking artificial skin gloves. These artificial skin tactile sensors used small piezoelectric ceramic disks to measure applied force at multiple points on each glove. The gloves were created using silicone rubber to simulate both the texture and look of human skin, while maintaining both flexibility and durability. The sensor outputs were buffered by high-impedance voltage-following operational amplifiers, and then read sequentially using a multiplexing scheme by a microcontroller. Sensor …

California Printing History And The Shakespeare Press Museum, Laura Sorvetti Dec 2010

California Printing History And The Shakespeare Press Museum, Laura Sorvetti

Master's Theses

The Shakespeare Press Museum, a working letterpress museum at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, houses letterpress printing presses and equipment dating from the 1850s to the 1970s. Although the museum has been at Cal Poly since the 1960s, little work was completed on the historical context of the collections or to address the archival and educational frameworks of the museum’s collection. This thesis has three purposes: to place the museum’s collections in their nineteenth-century California historical context; to provide the first in-depth examination of the museum’s original founder, Charles “Shakespeare” Palmer; and to create an archival reference and program for …

The Effectiveness Of Damage Arrestment Devices In Delaying Fastener-Hole Interaction Failures In Carbon Fiber Polyurethane Foam Composite Sandwich Panels Subjected To Static And Dynamic Loading Under Increased Temperatures, Dominic E. Surano

Master's Theses

A study was conducted to investigate simple, cost-effective manufacturing techniques to delay skin-core delamination, micro-buckling and bearing stress failures resulting from fastener-hole interactions. Composite sandwich panels, with and without damage arrestment devices (DADs), were subjected to monotonic compression at a rate of 5mm per second, and compression-compression fatigue at 50% yield at an amplitude of 65%, under temperatures of 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 °F.

The sandwiches tested were composed of two-layer cross-weave carbon fiber facesheets, a polyurethane foam core, and an epoxy film adhesive to join the two materials. The most successful method to delay the aforementioned …

Assessment Of Morphology And Hemodynamics In Normal And Remodeled Microvasculature With Parameter Sensitivity Analysis, Shilpi Ghosh Dec 2010

Assessment Of Morphology And Hemodynamics In Normal And Remodeled Microvasculature With Parameter Sensitivity Analysis, Shilpi Ghosh

Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to compare the morphological and hemodynamic characteristics of normal and remodeled vascular networks in the mouse gracilis muscle. To this end, previously developed models to assess flows and vascular branching were used to assess the normal and remodeled microcirculatory networks. The analysis revealed that the average individual vessel flow rates for vessels of similar caliber and total volumetric flow rates in the networks do not change for vessels of the same caliber after remodeling. Connectivity changes and average diameters primarily change in the larger arterioles after remodeling. A few correlations could be made between …

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Wastewater Treatment Pond Algae With Wastewater Sludge, Daniel Eric Heimel Dec 2010

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Wastewater Treatment Pond Algae With Wastewater Sludge, Daniel Eric Heimel

Master's Theses

Microalgae harvested from wastewater treatment ponds can be anaerobically digested to produce biogas, a renewable fuel resource. However, past experiments have shown some limitations of algae digestion. Algal cell walls are thought to be resistant to digestion, and the high protein content of algae can lead to ammonia toxicity in digesters. Co-digestion of algae with substrates containing higher C:N ratios (e.g., waste paper) can be used to maintain non-inhibitory ammonia concentrations and increase methane production. However, high carbon waste co-substrates have become costly or are not readily available in many communities. Although domestic wastewater sludge has only a marginally higher …

Terrain Impostors, William Hamilton Hess Dec 2010

Terrain Impostors, William Hamilton Hess

Master's Theses

Interactive software applications which need to render large terrain meshes can suffer from slow frame rates if the geometry of the terrain is sufficiently dense. However, the viewing angle to many distant features of the terrain does not change rapidly with respect to time. If the movement of the viewing position is limited to continuous motion and restrained to a known speed, many terrain features may be rendered once in high detail and reused for several frames.

This thesis proposes a method to increase the rendering speed of large complex terrains by splitting the terrain into contiguous chunks. If a …

The periods of these bottomside waves range from 16 to 60 min, and they are shown …

Reflections On The Conversation: An Overview Of Collection Development Literature From 2010, Courtney L. Selby Dec 2010

Reflections On The Conversation: An Overview Of Collection Development Literature From 2010, Courtney L. Selby

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

One of the most important functions of the regular review of a collection development policy is the opportunity to revisit the fundamentals of collection development. Regardless of whether we are public, private or academic entities, the basic considerations in creating and maintaining a collection development policy remain the same. We start with the library mission. Whom do we serve, and why? Knowing the focus and purpose of our service is important, but translating that knowledge into timely and relevant policies that inform our decisions is absolutely critical to excellence in service-oriented librarianship. And there is an even greater value in …

Mentoring Community Economic Development In Idaho, Abelardo Rodriguez, Sue Traver, Benjamin Eborn, Karl Dye Dec 2010

Mentoring Community Economic Development In Idaho, Abelardo Rodriguez, Sue Traver, Benjamin Eborn, Karl Dye

Journal of Extension

This article presents an example of how Idaho Extension personnel have used regional economic tools to educate stakeholders from contrasting regions about the contributions of different sectors to their regional economies, how the sectors are interrelated, and how economic multipliers express attributes of each region. The discussions between communities of practice in contrasting regions were promoted to explore the benefits of the knowledge exchange. This mentoring approach changed the understanding and perceptions of the regional economies of participating community development practitioners of the regional economies. The approach should be promoted for wider dissemination.

Results of the study have important implications to assist local growers in deciding to produce ethnic crops.

The Influence Of Different Tomato Varieties On Acidity As It Relates To Home Canning, Richard Heflebower, Carolyn Washburn Dec 2010

The Influence Of Different Tomato Varieties On Acidity As It Relates To Home Canning, Richard Heflebower, Carolyn Washburn

Journal of Extension

Tomatoes are a popular vegetable for home canning. USDA Guidelines recommend lemon juice or citric acid be added to home-canned tomatoes to increase acidity. In 2007 and 2008, we grew and tested the pH of 15 tomato varieties. Three of the heirloom varieties had statistically lower acidity than the hybrid used as a standard for comparison. Canning tomatoes generally involves using different tomato varieties at various stages of ripening. Although some control of acidity can be exercised by variety selection, Extension agents should encourage those involved in home canning to follow USDA guidelines regardless of the tomato varieties used.

Disambiguating The Sublime And The Historicity Of The Concept, Vrasidas Karalis Dec 2010

Disambiguating The Sublime And The Historicity Of The Concept, Vrasidas Karalis

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Disambiguating the Sublime and the Historicity of the Concept" Vrasidas Karalis explores the notion of sublime or sublimity as the field of colliding signifiers and of experiential frameworks in conflict. Instead of treating the traditional notion as a structural element of style of ideology, he analyses it from the point of its contextual validation and its very historicity: what makes sublimity emerge is the extra-lingual unease, the existential dysphoria of the world outside the text, as refracted through specific works of art. Such dysphoria is expressed through ungrammatical language or/and through the attempt in specific moments in …

The Chi Complex And Ambiguities Of Meeting, Paul Carter Dec 2010

The Chi Complex And Ambiguities Of Meeting, Paul Carter

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Chi Complex and Ambiguities of Meeting" Paul Carter develops a discussion of interpersonal encounters by mobilizing an apparatus of references, ranging from Jean Genet to Lévinas, Derrida, Bachmann, Merleau-Ponty, and Arendt. The hypothesis is that meeting another person entails and subsumes a non-meeting; a resistance and a refusal. The article pursues the ambiguity at the heart of encountering the other through an investigation of the urban spaces that are allegedly designed to invite and facilitate meetings. The argument put forward is that these spaces are paradoxically designed to avert encounters. This is especially true in the …

Ambiguity, Children, Representation, And Sexuality, Catharine Lumby Dec 2010

Ambiguity, Children, Representation, And Sexuality, Catharine Lumby

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Ambiguity, Children, Representation, and Sexuality" Catharine Lumby considers current and historical scholarly and popular debates about the representation of children, including concerns about their sexualisation in such representations. The article begins by examining images taken by photographers in the Victorian era, including Charles Dodgson and Julia Cameron, and asks not only how the gaze of the photographer frames the child but how the child returns the adult gaze. Lumby seeks to problematize our understanding of the ways in which images "sexualize" children. Drawing on the work of James Kincaid, it examines discourses that frame children as, on …

On Ambidextrousness, Or, What Is An Innovative Action?, Brett Neilson Dec 2010

On Ambidextrousness, Or, What Is An Innovative Action?, Brett Neilson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "On the Ambiguity of Ambidextrousness, or, What is an Innovative Action?" Brett Neilson explores the significance of the fact that the technical equality of the hands is realized above all in the act of manual labor, revisiting an influential essay by Robert Hertz, a student of Emile Durkheim and associate of Marcel Mauss, published in 1909 and entitled "The Pre-Eminence of the Right Hand." In his text, Hertz argued that the basic spatial distinction between the left and right hand acquires the polarity of a social hierarchy owing not to the physiology or psychology of motor asymmetry …

This research compares the behavior of three robot navigation controllers namely: PID, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Fuzzy Logic (FL), that are used to control the same autonomous mobile robot platform navigating a real unknown indoor environment that contains simple geometric-shaped static objects to reach a goal in an unspecified location. In particular, the study presents and compares the design, simulation, hardware implementation, and testing of these controllers. The first controller is a traditional linear PID controller, and the other two are intelligent non-linear controllers, one using Artificial Neural Networks and the other using Fuzzy Logic Techniques. Each controller is …

Ambiguity, The Literary, And Close Reading, David G. Brooks Dec 2010

Ambiguity, The Literary, And Close Reading, David G. Brooks

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Ambiguity, the Literary, and Close Reading" David G. Brooks approaches the matter of literary ambiguity from two directions: firstly by presenting the question of what we might learn if we look at ambiguity not so much from the angle of the author as that of the reader, a question which may appear obvious and inoffensive on the surface, but which becomes intricate and captivating as Brooks, arguing that literary ambiguity cannot be discussed without attention to the idea of close reading, peels layer upon layer of commonsensical assumptions away from reading practice, to arrive at the point …

Conquest, Consequences, Restoration: The Art Of Rebecca Belmore, Kathleen Marie Deblassie Dec 2010

Conquest, Consequences, Restoration: The Art Of Rebecca Belmore, Kathleen Marie Deblassie

Art & Art History ETDs

Rebecca Belmore (Ojibwa/Anishinabe, b. 1960 in Upsala, Ontario), embraces three themes in her oeuvre: conquest, consequences and restoration.Through the mediums of performance art, installation, video and photography, Belmore confronts Indigenous issues regarding land theft, identity, gender, racism, stereotypes, memory, contested histories, and the recovery and reclamation of a decolonized self. All of these themes are sub-categories that fall under the larger theme of the consequences of conquest. The most significant component of Belmores work, however, is restoration, which embraces themes of healing, self-determination and sovereignty. Traditional art-historical methodologies can and have been used to analyze Indigenous art. This thesis proposes that …
