The Limits Of Social Capital: An Examination Of Immigrants' Housing Challenges In Calgary, Alina Tanasescu, Alan Smart Dec 2010

The Limits Of Social Capital: An Examination Of Immigrants' Housing Challenges In Calgary, Alina Tanasescu, Alan Smart

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A common explanation of immigrants' under-representation among the homeless population in Canada is that kinship and community networks act as a buffer to absolute homelessness. There are indications that immigrant homelessness is, however, increasing, suggesting that the buffering capacity of social networks reaches a limit. Further, evidence of precarious housing situations indicates that we should approach this form of housing provision with some caution. This paper draws on a larger study of housing difficulties among immigrants in Calgary to address the ways in which social capital serves a buffering role, and under what conditions it loses its ability to prevent …

Progressive Housing Policy In The 21st Century: A Contrarian View, George Fallis Dec 2010

Progressive Housing Policy In The 21st Century: A Contrarian View, George Fallis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

After years of cutbacks to housing programs in Canada, there has emerged a consensus that a progressive housing policy requires significant construction of new social housing units to address both the problems of housing affordability and homelessness. This paper argues that large scale social housing should not be the focus of progressive housing policy in the 21st century. We should use the progressive goals of the original welfare state, but we should modify the programs designed to meet these goals. The paper examines the income and personal insecurities faced by low-income households today, contrasting them with the insecurities faced in …

Mother And Daughter Communication About Sexual Health In Rural Kenya, Jessica Velcoff

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The present study focused on young women, and the manner in which communication with their mothers may facilitate decreased sexual risk behaviors in rural Kenya. With regard to sexual behaviors, Hutchinson and Wood (2007) developed the parent-based expansion of the theory of planned behavior (PETPB). The PETPB is a theoretical framework that builds upon the theory of planned behavior, to include the influence of parents in understanding adolescent sexual risk behavior. The present study was guided by the PETPB and explored communication, knowledge of sexuality and sexual health, and preventative behaviors among rural secondary school aged Kenyan young women (15 …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Levo-tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP) is an alkaloid found in many traditional Chinese herbal preparations and has a unique pharmacological profile that includes dopamine receptor antagonism. Previously we demonstrated that l-THP attenuates fixed-ratio (FR) cocaine self-administration (SA) and cocaine-induced reinstatement in rats at doses that do not alter food-reinforced responding. This study examined the effects of l-THP on cocaine and food SA under progressive-ratio (PR) schedules of reinforcement and the discriminative stimulus effects of cocaine. In adult male Sprague–Dawley rats self-administering cocaine (0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg/inf), l-THP significantly reduced breaking points at the 1.875, 3.75 and 7.5 mg/kg …

A Review Of The Benefits And Applications Of The Thorium Fuel Cycle, Vincent Hall Dec 2010

A Review Of The Benefits And Applications Of The Thorium Fuel Cycle, Vincent Hall

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper aims to inform the reader of the benefits that can be achieved by using thorium as a fuel for nuclear power. Stages of the thorium cycle are directly compared against the current uranium based nuclear fuel cycle. These include mining, milling, fuel fabrication, use of various reactor designs, reprocessing, and disposal. Thorium power promises several key advantages over traditional nuclear power methods, namely a dramatic decrease in long lived radioactive waste, increased fuel efficiency, greater chemical stability during disposal, and higher adaptability for differing reactor designs across a wider range of the thermal neutron spectrum. Obstacles that face …

The Practices Of A Non-Diversity-Focused Organization And Their Impact On Its Members' Intercultural Behavioral Comfort, Learning, And Competence, Ruth Sessler Bernstein

Student Scholarship

The purpose of this research is to examine the impact that university student groups' practices have on their members' intercultural behavioral comfort and interactions and their cultural learning. We surveyed 360 undergraduate members of a national voluntary service organization at 50 U.S. four-year colleges. Findings indicate that an organization's ability to nurture a sense of feeling welcome and identification with organizational purpose predict skills and confidence in dealing with diverse intra-group members' a competency we call behavioral comfort. An additional practice using proactive efforts to promote social interaction predicts behavioral comfort when mediated by a sense of belonging. While high …

We tested intermittent aeration of the soil treatment area (STA) of onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) for its ability to restore and maintain STA hydraulic flow and improve the water quality functions of conventional OWTS. Evaluation was conducted on hydraulically-failed conventional OWTS at three state-owned medical group homes in Washington County, RI, USA. Testing was conducted in two phases, with Phase I (before intermittent soil aeration (ISA)) comprising the first 6 months of the study, and Phase II (during ISA) the remaining 7 months. Intermittent soil aeration restored STA hydraulic function in all three systems despite a marked reduction in …

Improving Public Health Through Urban Design: The Case Of Delano, California, Adriana C. Neal Dec 2010

Improving Public Health Through Urban Design: The Case Of Delano, California, Adriana C. Neal

Master's Theses

Emerging research shows a clear relationship between urban design and public health. Major issues effecting public health include cardiovascular disease, high rates of obesity, and associated diseases like Type 2 diabetes. These conditions can be attributed, in a large part, to personal habits, including diet and physical activity. Certain elements of urban design have an impact on personal habits and therefore affect health. This report explores the relationship between urban design and public health, first broadly, and then at a micro-scale, examining the relationship in the context of the City of Delano, California.

This exploratory study begins with an in-depth …

No-Till Vegetable Production At The Cal Poly Organic Farm, Nathaniel Jay Harkleroad Dec 2010

No-Till Vegetable Production At The Cal Poly Organic Farm, Nathaniel Jay Harkleroad

Master's Theses

Tillage and subsequent bare soil have been linked to erosion, nutrient leaching, reduced biological diversity, loss of organic matter, and release of CO2 into the atmosphere (Brady and Weil, 2004). The usefulness of an organic no-till system for transplanted vegetables was explored over two growing seasons. In 2007-2008, in a randomized complete block design, treatments of tilled and no-till (T and NT, respectively) were seeded to a dense grain and legume winter cover crop. Tilled plots were mown and disk-ploughed two times; NT plots retained a mow-killed mulch on the soil surface. There were less weeds in NT plots. A …

Transportation Energy Analysis for Single-Family Residential Construction in California

Tyler Langley

Since the oil crisis of 1973, energy use in the United States of America has been a growing area of concern. Studies have shown that the construction industry is responsible for almost half of all annual energy consumption. With this awareness, the analysis of energy use within the related construction fields has become an emergent subject. One facet of construction energy use that has been less studied than others is that of the energy consumed in transporting building materials from manufacturing plants to construction sites. This thesis proposes a …

Nonlinear Modeling Of A Sustainable Material, Jorien Gill Baza Dec 2010

Nonlinear Modeling Of A Sustainable Material, Jorien Gill Baza

Master's Theses

This study developed a nonlinear constitutive model for a sustainable orthotropic material. Existing methods for constitutive models of wood were improved upon to include the nonlinear stress-strain response not only in the two orthogonal axes but at any orientation to the strong axis of the material. This method also simplifies the nonlinear stress-strain relationships into bilinear stress-strain curves which can be valuable in hand calculations as well as finite-element analyses. The effectiveness of the proposed constitutive model is demonstrated by comparing bilinear stress-strain predictions to experimental data.

The Development And Validation Of A Finite Element Model Of A Canine Rib For Use With A Bone Remodeling Algorithm., Scott J. Sylliaasen Dec 2010

The Development And Validation Of A Finite Element Model Of A Canine Rib For Use With A Bone Remodeling Algorithm., Scott J. Sylliaasen

Master's Theses

Studies are currently being performed to determine the effects of bisphosphonate treatments on the structure and density of bone tissue. One of the pathways for gaining a better understanding of the effects of this and other treatments involves creating a computer simulation. Theory suggests that bone tissue structure and density are directly related to the manner in which the tissue is loaded. Remodeling is the process in which bone tissue is resorbed in areas of low stress distributions, and generated in areas of high stress distributions. Previous studies have utilized numerical methods and finite element methods to predict bone structure …

Pled Enhancement And Re-Use, Carlos A. Ayala Dec 2010

Pled Enhancement And Re-Use, Carlos A. Ayala

Master's Theses

Polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) represent new technology for display applications. However, these polymer based devices could benefit from increased efficiency and material longevity.

This thesis examines how preprocessing PLED indium tin oxide (ITO) anodes and reprocessing previously used substrates can create brighter, more efficient PLEDs. The project accomplishes this by simple changes to fabrication techniques, such as additional cleaning, etching, or thermal annealing, to improve pristine device luminance and efficiency. The project also examines substrate re-use techniques to repair ITO substrate damage, and effects of polymer aging on PLED luminance and efficiency.

PLEDs fabricated with polymer aged to varying …
