Numerical Comparison Of Methods For Hirota-Satsuma Model, Syed T. Mohyud-Din, Ahmet Yildirim, Syed M. Mahdi Hosseini
Numerical Comparison Of Methods For Hirota-Satsuma Model, Syed T. Mohyud-Din, Ahmet Yildirim, Syed M. Mahdi Hosseini
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper outlines the implementation of the modified decomposition method (MDM) to solve a very important physical model namely Hirota-Satsuma model which occurs quite often in applied sciences. Numerical results and comparisons with homotopy perturbation (HPM) and Adomian’s decomposition (ADM) methods explicitly reveal the complete reliability of the proposed MDM. It is observed that the suggested algorithm (MDM) is more user-friendly and is easier to implement compared to HPM and ADM.

Duality In Fuzzy Linear Programming With Symmetric Trapezoidal Numbers, S. H. Nasseri, E. Ebrahimnejad, S. Mizuno
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Linear programming problems with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers have recently attracted much interest. Various methods have been developed for solving these types of problems. Here, following the work of Ganesan and Veeramani and using the recent approach of Mahdavi-Amiri and Nasseri, we introduce the dual of the linear programming problem with symmetric trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and establish some duality results. The results will be useful for post optimality analysis.
Global Stability Of Worms In Computer Network, Bimal Kumar Mishra, Aditya Kumar Singh
Global Stability Of Worms In Computer Network, Bimal Kumar Mishra, Aditya Kumar Singh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
An attempt has been made to show the impact of non-linearity of the worms through SIRS (susceptible – infectious – recovered - susceptible) and SEIRS (susceptible – exposed – infectious – recovered - susceptible) e-epidemic models in computer network. A very general form of non-linear incidence rate has been considered satisfying the worm propagating behavior in computer network. The concavity conditions with a non-linear incidence rate and under the constant population size assumption are shown to be stable. Such systems have either a unique and stable endemic equilibrium state or no endemic equilibrium state at all; in the latter case, …
Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram
Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Improvement in reliability and production play a very important role in system design. The two key factors, considered in predicting system reliability, are failure distribution of the component and system configuration. This research discusses the mathematical modeling of a highly reliable complex system, which is in three states i.e. normal, partial failed (degraded state) and complete failed state. The system, partial failed is due to the partial failure of internal components or redundancies and completely failed is due to catastrophic failure of the system. Repair rates are general functions of the time spent. All the transition rates are constant except …
Finite Element Analysis In Porous Media For Incompressible Flow Of Contamination From Nuclear Waste, Abbas Al-Bayati, Saad A. Manaa, Ekhlass S. Ahmed
Finite Element Analysis In Porous Media For Incompressible Flow Of Contamination From Nuclear Waste, Abbas Al-Bayati, Saad A. Manaa, Ekhlass S. Ahmed
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A non-linear parabolic system is used to describe incompressible nuclear waste disposal contamination in porous media, in which both molecular diffusion and dispersion are considered. The Galerkin method is applied for the pressure equation. For the brine, radionuclide and heat, a kind of partial upwind finite element scheme is constructed. Examples are included to demonstrate certain aspects of the theory and illustrate the capabilities of the kind of partial upwind finite element approach.
Approximate Approach To The Das Model Of Fractional Logistic Population Growth, S. Das, P. K. Gupta, K. Vishal
Approximate Approach To The Das Model Of Fractional Logistic Population Growth, S. Das, P. K. Gupta, K. Vishal
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, the analytical method, Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) has been successfully implemented for solving nonlinear logistic model of fractional order. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. Using initial value, the explicit solutions of population size for different particular cases have been derived. Numerical results show that the method is extremely efficient to solve this complicated biological model.
Optimal Correction Of Infeasible System In Linear Equality Via Genetic Algorithm, S. Ketabchi, H. Moosaei, S. Fallahi
Optimal Correction Of Infeasible System In Linear Equality Via Genetic Algorithm, S. Ketabchi, H. Moosaei, S. Fallahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This work is focused on the optimal correction of infeasible system of linear equality. In this paper, for correcting this system, we will make the changes just in the coefficient matrix by using l norm and show that solving this problem is equivalent to solving a fractional quadratic problem. To solve this problem, we use the genetic algorithm. Some examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed method.
Approximating Solutions For Ginzburg – Landau Equation By Hpm And Adm, J. Biazar, M. Partovi, Z. Ayati
Approximating Solutions For Ginzburg – Landau Equation By Hpm And Adm, J. Biazar, M. Partovi, Z. Ayati
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an analytical approximation to the solution of Ginzburg-Landauis discussed. A Homotopy perturbation method introduced by He is employed to derive the analytic approximation solution and results compared with those of the Adomian decomposition method. Two examples are presented to show the capability of the methods. The results reveal that the methods are almost equally effective and promising.

Analysis Of An Online Support Group For Women With Breast Cancer, Laura Boxley
Analysis Of An Online Support Group For Women With Breast Cancer, Laura Boxley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
With over 200,000 new diagnoses in 2004, breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the United States. Both the stress of treatment and the threat of a potentially lethal illness present significant challenges to an individual's emotional well-being and coping skills, yet paradoxically many women report benefits from dealing with this adversity. The aims of this investigation were to describe the characteristics of benefit finding as expressed by breast cancer survivors participating in an online breast cancer support group, and to assess the relationship between symptom distress, emotional well-being and benefit finding using baseline …
Parental Divorce, Attachment, And Self-Other Conceptualization, Julia A. Hewett
Parental Divorce, Attachment, And Self-Other Conceptualization, Julia A. Hewett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The formation of strong attachment bonds in childhood and adolescence has a significant effect on adult self and other concepts operationalized here as self-esteem and hostility. These self-other conceptualizations are posited to facilitate the formation of successful relationships and well-being in adulthood. To determine whether parental separations before the age of 16 years disrupt attachment bonds and subsequent self-other conceptualizations, participants from three naturally formed parental marital status groups were compared on attachment, self-esteem and hostility: divorced parents (N = 622), married parents (N = 7, 424), or divorced but remarried parents (N = 313). Individuals who had divorced or …
Neuropsychological Symptoms Associated With Multiple Shunts, Jared Jackson
Neuropsychological Symptoms Associated With Multiple Shunts, Jared Jackson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Hydrocephalus is the excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranium which may result in increased intracranial pressure, dilation of cerebral ventricles and displacement of adjacent brain structures. Ventriculoperitoneal shunting is often needed to treat hydrocephalus. Patients with Ventriculoperitoneal shunts have been found to have IQ scores below the mean of the general population. In addition, many of these patients experience shunt infections or other complications that require shunt replacement. Shunt replacements and shunt infections have been associated with additional deficits in intellectual functioning. However, previous research has failed to address the neuropsychological ramifications of shunt infections and shunt replacements. …
Emotional Response To Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Amy Pitchforth
Emotional Response To Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Amy Pitchforth
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Emotion can be studied by measuring physiological, behavioral, and verbal responses to specific stimuli. In current research, it is most common to use visual stimuli to measure the emotional response. One of the most common sets of stimuli used for this purpose is the International Affective Picture Systems (IAPS). An additional set of stimuli, the International Affective Digital Sounds (IADS), was created to be an auditory equivalent of the IAPS. The present study sought to compare the emotional response (measured with Heart Rate, Skin Conductance, and a self-report measure of emotion called the SAM) to sounds from the IADS and …
Protein Preservation In Fossil Whale Bones Of The Miocene/Pliocene Pisco Formation, Peru, Uriel Leme Vidal
Protein Preservation In Fossil Whale Bones Of The Miocene/Pliocene Pisco Formation, Peru, Uriel Leme Vidal
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Fossil remains have recently been the focus of considerable attention due to several independent reports of protein and soft-tissue preservation in ancient biological remains. The fossil whales from the Pisco Formation in Peru were previously reported to be very well preserved. A considerable percentage of these whales have their bones still articulated, and not a few have fossil baleen in life position. In this study we assayed bone samples from some fossil whales for ultrastructure preservation and the presence of original protein/proteinaceous materials. For analysis of fine details of structural preservation we used light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). …
Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas
Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous studies demonstrated enhanced fetal adrenal cortisol biosynthesis following exposure to long-term hypoxia (LTH). The studies presented here were designed to determine the mechanism(s) regulating this important adaptive endocrine response. Ewes were maintained at high altitude (3,820 m) from approximately day 40 to 138-141 of gestation. Fetal adrenal glands were then collected from LTH and age matched normoxic controls. Dispersed fetal adrenal cortical cells (FACs) were untreated, treated with ACTH, treated in combination with ACTH precursors (POMC and 22-kDa pro-ACTH), or pre-treated with H-89 and or UO126 followed by ACTH treatment. Following ACTH treatment, cortisol biosynthesis increased in both groups …
Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag
Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Alterations in brain metals homeostasis and particularly brain iron overload have been postulated to play a role in Alzheimer's disease, contributing to oxidative stress and neuronal injury; however, the source of this iron is not clear and may be due to metabolic derangement(s), failed iron clearance mechanisms or exogenous deposition such as through bleeding. This series of studies was designed to evaluate the extent of metals dyshomeostasis in the Alzheimer's disease brain and specifically whether microvascular bleeding is a major contributor to Alzheimer's disease-related iron overload. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a vascular manifestation of Alzheimer's disease present to some …
Coronary Heart Disease Mortality And Long-Term Exposure To Ambient Particulate Air Pollutants In Elderly Nonsmoking California Residents, Lie Hong Chen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of long-term concentrations of ambient PM on risks of all causes, cardiopulmonary, coronary heart disease (CHD), total cancer, and any mention of nonmalignant respiratory disease (NMRD) mortality.
The health effects of long-term ambient air pollution have been studied with up to 30 years of follow-up in the AHSMOG cohort, a cohort of 6,338 nonsmoking white California adults. Monthly concentrations of ambient air pollutants [particulate matter(PMio), Ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or particulate matter
In the AHSMOG cohort, each increment of 10 |ig/m3 in PMio in two-pollutant models …
Amending Constituting Identity, Rosalind Dixon
Amending Constituting Identity, Rosalind Dixon
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Constitutional amendment procedures can create constitutional change in two ways: by providing evidence of popular support for constitutional change, and by changing the textual basis for subsequent acts of constitutional interpretation. Both mechanisms have clearly also succeeded, in various countries, in creating changes in the domain of constitutional identity. The question the essay investigates is whether there is nonetheless something peculiar about this domain that makes it especially difficult to succeed in using both these amendment mechanisms, simultaneously, in the quest for constitutional change. To explore this question, the essay draws on two distinct attempts to “amend” constitutional identity in …
What Is The Impact Of Liquor Licensing Laws On Portland’S Entertainment Venues? A Case Study, Will Etheridge
What Is The Impact Of Liquor Licensing Laws On Portland’S Entertainment Venues? A Case Study, Will Etheridge
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
In January 2009, Port City Music Hall in Portland, Maine was preparing to open its doors to the public for the first time. With a capacity for nearly six hundred attendees, Port City Music Hall was designed to attract national touring acts to Portland too big for the bar scene, but not suited for the Merrill Auditorium or Cumberland Civic Center. With the State Theatre still shuttered at the time, this new venue hoped to fill an important niche in the city’s creative economy, bringing a diverse array of performers that would not otherwise be able to find a viable …
The Role Of Ambient Air Pollution In The Occurrence Of Emphysema, Shiva Metghalchi
The Role Of Ambient Air Pollution In The Occurrence Of Emphysema, Shiva Metghalchi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Emphysema is the most common cause of death from respiratory disease in the United States. Emphysema is most common among people aged 50 and older. Those with a genetic predisposition to emphysema may experience the onset as early as their thirties or forties. Men are more likely than women to develop emphysema, but female cases are increasing as the number of female smokers rises.
In the past few years, etiological and pathogenic research has been carried out in an attempt to determine the reason for an increase in deaths and other health problems associated with air pollution, and there have …
Effects Of Acculturation On Hiv/Aids Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Asian And Pacific Islander (Api) Women, Margaret Cabotage Salud
Effects Of Acculturation On Hiv/Aids Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Asian And Pacific Islander (Api) Women, Margaret Cabotage Salud
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background. In the US women are the fastest growing group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and AIDS. In addition, the estimated AIDS cases among female adults and adolescents, aged 13-19, increased from 7% in 1985 to approximately 26% in 2002. Most infections occur by heterosexual transmission with 53% occurring through contact with a high-risk sexual partner. While overall HIV/AIDS rates in the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community remain low, they are rising and HIV testing rates, one of the major prevention strategies for HIV, are lower than that of other populations. Furthermore, very little is known about APIs …
Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way
Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem, autosomal dominant disorder affecting approximately 1 in 6000 births. Developmental brain abnormalities cause substantial morbidity and mortality and often lead to neurological disease including epilepsy, cognitive disabilities, and autism. TSC is caused by inactivating mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2, whose protein products are known inhibitors of mTORC1, an important kinase regulating translation and cell growth. Nonetheless, neither the pathophysiology of the neurological manifestations of TSC nor the extent of mTORC1 involvement in the development of these lesions is known. Murine models would greatly advance the study of this debilitating disorder. This thesis …
Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen
Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
RMI1 (BLM-Associated Protein 75 or Blap75) is highly conserved from yeast to human. Previous studies have shown that hRMI1 is required for BLM/TopoIIIα/RMI1 complex stability and function. However, in vivo functions of RMI1 remain elusive. To address this question, I generated RMI1 knockout mice by homologous replacement targeting. While RMI1+/- mice showed no obvious phenotype, deletion of both RMI1 alleles leads to early embryonic lethality before implantation. I then generated RMI1/p53 double knockout mice. After ionizing radiation treatment at 4Gy, RMI1/p53 double-heterzygous mice showed shortened tumor latency and aggressive tumor types when comparing with wild type, RMI1+/- and p53+/- control …
New To Ols For Monitoring Gamma Camera Uniformity, Brad K. Lofton
New To Ols For Monitoring Gamma Camera Uniformity, Brad K. Lofton
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Detector uniformity is a fundamental performance characteristic of all modern gamma camera systems, and ensuring a stable, uniform detector response is critical for maintaining clinical images that are free of artifact. For these reasons, the assessment of detector uniformity is one of the most common activities associated with a successful clinical quality assurance program in gamma camera imaging. The evaluation of this parameter, however, is often unclear because it is highly dependent upon acquisition conditions, reviewer expertise, and the application of somewhat arbitrary limits that do not characterize the spatial location of the non-uniformities. Furthermore, as the goal of any …
Analysis Of Β8 Integrin In Neurogenesis And Neurovascular Homeostasis, Aaron K. Mobley
Analysis Of Β8 Integrin In Neurogenesis And Neurovascular Homeostasis, Aaron K. Mobley
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Neurogenesis in the adult mouse brain occurs within the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle. In the SVZ, neural stem cells (NSC) reside in a specialized microenvironment, or vascular niche, consisting of blood vessels and their basement membranes. Most NSCs in the SVZ differentiate into progenitor cells, which further differentiate to generate neuroblasts, which then migrate from the SVZ to the olfactory bulbs (OB) along the rostral migratory stream (RMS). ECM-mediated adhesion and signaling within the vascular niche likely contribute to proper NSC self-renewal, survival, differentiation and neuroblast motility. The mechanisms that control these events are poorly understood. Previous …
Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp
Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp
Senior Honors Theses
Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that severely limits the lifespan of affected infants. While these infants have no higher brain function, they are still persons, and should be given the same moral and ethical considerations as healthy infants. With this in mind, organ donation procedures should follow the same guidelines that apply to other donors. Because a large part of nursing care for anencephalic infants is palliative care, nurses need appropriate training to care effectively for both the infant and the family, providing for physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.
Technology Convergence And Federalism: Who Should Decide The Future Of Telecommunications Regulation?, Daniel A. Lyons
Technology Convergence And Federalism: Who Should Decide The Future Of Telecommunications Regulation?, Daniel A. Lyons
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article critically examines the division of regulatory jurisdiction over telecommunications issues between the federal government and the states. Currently, the line between federal and state jurisdiction varies depending on the service at issue. This compartmentalization might have made sense fifteen years ago, but the advent of technology convergence has largely rendered this model obsolete. Yesterday's telephone and cable companies now compete head-to-head to offer consumers the vaunted "triple play" of voice, video, and internet services. But these telecommunications companies are finding it increasingly difficult to fit new operations into arcane, rigid regulatory compartments. Moreover, services that consumers view as …
Undoing Undue Favors: Providing Competitors With Standing To Challenge Favorable Irs Actions, Sunil Shenoi
Undoing Undue Favors: Providing Competitors With Standing To Challenge Favorable Irs Actions, Sunil Shenoi
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The Internal Revenue Service occasionally creates rules, notices, or regulations that allow taxpayers to pay less than they would under a strict reading of the law. Sometimes, however, these IRS actions are directly contrary to federal law and have significant economic impact. Challenging favorable IRS actions through litigation will likely be unsuccessful because no plaintiff can satisfy the requirements for standing. To address this situation, this Note proposes a statutory reform to provide competitors with standing to challenge favorable IRS actions in court.
The "Enlightened Barbarity" Of Inclusive Fitness And Wrongful Death: Biological Justifications For An Investment Theory Of Loss In Wycko V. Gnodtke, Ryan Shannon
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Wrongful death laws should permit and encourage courts and juries to consider the survivors' investment in decedents when determining wrongful death damages, given new biological justifications for this theory of loss. The investment theory of damages, which permits an award of damages based on the investment of financial resources relatives make in one another, originated in Michigan's courts in the early 1 960s, but as of present day has been largely abrogated. In the context of modern understandings of evolutionary biology, including kin selection theory and sociobiology, the investment theory of recovery accords with the goals of corrective justice as …
