Cigarette Smoke, Dna Damage And Repair In Human Cervical And Vaginal Cells In Vitro And Ex Vivo., Afsoon Moktar Dec 2010

Cigarette Smoke, Dna Damage And Repair In Human Cervical And Vaginal Cells In Vitro And Ex Vivo., Afsoon Moktar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among gynecological malignancies, carcinoma of the cervix is the leading cancer type worldwide. Conversely, vaginal tumors account for an incidence of approximately 1-2% of lower genital tract malignancies. Interestingly, the major shared risk factor among women with cervical and vaginal tumors is infection with cancer-associated human papillomaviruses (HPVs). In fact, HPV infection is the necessary causative factor in the development and progression of cervical and vaginal neoplasia in the majority of cases. Epidemiological studies support that cervical and vaginal pre-cancerous lesions that are initiated by HPV infection generally regress in the absence of known risk factors such as cigarette smoking. …

Comparative Perspectives Of Direct Support Professionals Working With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities Regarding Standard Competencies., Cynthia Anne Bayes 1955-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing shortage of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. This shortage is at a crisis now and will continue to become more of a crisis unless changes are made. This is a crisis for many community employers and even more of a crisis for the people with disabilities who are faced with constant turnover and the discontinuity created by the withdrawal, gaps in services, and introduction of new people who are likely to leave the position during the first year of employment (Larson & Hewitt, 2005). High turnover, vacancy rates and …

Investigation Whether The German Credit Financial Market Is Promising For Consulting Fees As An Alternative To Traditional Commission Banking., Alexandra Antonia Behrens 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is written to investigate if and how far the German credit financial market could be promising for consulting fees in the field of mortgage loan banking. The problem identified is an extensively discussed issue in the German credit financial sector. In solving the problem the author made some literature research and points out different modes of determining consulting fees. The author faces the challenge that, up to now, there is hardly any literature on the application of mortgage loan consulting fees in Germany. Secondly, a form concerning mortgage loan related business in conjunction with customers' attitudes towards consulting …

Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, And Accountability Scores : Evidence From Kentucky Scholastic Audits., Rebecca Curry Todd Dec 2010

Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, And Accountability Scores : Evidence From Kentucky Scholastic Audits., Rebecca Curry Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1983 the National Commission on Excellence in Education released A Nation at Risk, which triggered an extended era of school reform culminating in today's accountability movement. In Kentucky the school improvement process, in which principals play an integral part, is based on the Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI--with nine standards and 88 indicators overall) and the Scholastic Audit, a measurement tool based thereon. Murphy's (2004) mediated model of instructional leadership recognizes that complex school reform necessitates both direct and indirect skills. The central research question captures the purpose of this study, testing Murphy's model: Based on Scholastic …

Gender Role Stereotypes In Advertising : A Test Of The Match-Up Hypothesis On Advertising Effectiveness., Sara Picklesimer Dec 2010

Gender Role Stereotypes In Advertising : A Test Of The Match-Up Hypothesis On Advertising Effectiveness., Sara Picklesimer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Images in advertisements often depict social expectations for gendered behavior, reinforcing stereotypical masculine and feminine behaviors. This study examined the effectiveness of using gender role stereotypical images in advertisements by matching two products with a male and female, based on the match-up hypothesis. Two gender congruent and two gender incongruent advertisements were created to test the effectiveness of gender congruency on perceived message clarity, advertisement believability, perceived argument quality, attitude toward the advertisement, attitude toward the brand, and purchase intention, based on the information-processing model. Though gender congruent advertisements were perceived as slightly more effective than the gender incongruent advertisements, …

Do Sovereign Wealth Funds Mitigate Authoritarian Rule?: A Statistical Analysis Of Sovereign Wealth Funds And The Resource Curse., G. Jason Smith Dec 2010

Do Sovereign Wealth Funds Mitigate Authoritarian Rule?: A Statistical Analysis Of Sovereign Wealth Funds And The Resource Curse., G. Jason Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The famous oil baron' John Paul Getty once defined his secret to success in three parts, "Rise early, work hard, strike oil." This recipe, however, has not lead to political and economic success for oil-reliant, emerging market states. Rather than experiencing a resource blessing, these states have been plagued by a resource curse. This project introduces and tests my theory that sovereign wealth funds offer an exit to the resource curse and pathway back to the resource blessing. This theory is based on two observations I noticed during previous research on the subject: states with sovereign wealth funds boost occupational …

Dimensional Relationships Between The Sphenoid Sinus, Maxillary Sinuses And Other Craniomaxillofacial Structures Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis., Richard Michael Halpern Dec 2010

Dimensional Relationships Between The Sphenoid Sinus, Maxillary Sinuses And Other Craniomaxillofacial Structures Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Analysis., Richard Michael Halpern

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The study investigated dimensional relationships between the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and other selected craniomaxillofacial structures by using traditional cephalometric and volumetric procedures based on cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) data. Methods and Materials: A retrospective three-dimensional (volumetric) and two-dimensional (conventional cephalometric) analyses were conducted on CBCT datasets of 27 subjects who met the inclusional criteria from a sampled database of 2,290 individuals. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: (1) pre- fused spheno-occipital synchondrosis < 18 years (n=8), (2) fused spheno-occipital synchondrosis < 18 years (n=9), and (3) = 18 years with fused spheno-occipital synchondosis (n= 10). Results: Differences between studied groups were found for linear and angular measurement. Specific correlations were found between certain topographic and internal measurements, and some sinus dimensions and other selected craniomaxillofacial structures. Conclusion: Dimensional correlations exist between the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses and development of other selected craniomaxillofacial structures.

The Morality Of Special Relationships, Joshu Davis Dec 2010

The Morality Of Special Relationships, Joshu Davis

XULAneXUS

This essay originated as a senior thesis paper, attempting to address the problem various normative ethical theories had when put in the realm of “special relationships.” Special relationships are the relationships people have with family and close friends, which often have special duties or rights associated with them. Furthermore, the duties and rights associated with special relationships are often very different and more complex than those associated with strangers. The focus of the thesis was to see whether or not the various normative ethical theories within philosophy could be applied to special relationships without compromising the unique aspects of special …

Body Image, Peer Pressure, And Sexual Activity, Whitney Miller Dec 2010

Body Image, Peer Pressure, And Sexual Activity, Whitney Miller

XULAneXUS

Yamamiya, Cash, and Thompson (2006) found that when women begin to obsess over their bodies and their overall physical attractiveness, especially when trying to attract the opposite sex, they begin to form a negative body image about themselves. However, although research has shown that body image is assessed when attempting to attract the opposite sex, the relationship between body image and peer pressure’s influence on sexual activity has not been shown. Additionally, Whitbeck, Yoder, Hoyt, and Conger (1999) found that females with higher levels of self-esteem had significantly lower levels of sexual activity than those with lower levels of self-esteem. …

Concomitants Of Upper Record Statistics For Bivariate Pseudo–Weibull Distribution, Muhammad Ahsanullah, Saman Shahbaz, Muhammad Qaiser Shahbaz, Muhammad Mohsin

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper the Bivariate Pseudo–Weibull distribution has been defined as a compound distribution of two random variables to model the failure rate of component reliability. The distribution of r–th concomitant and joint distribution of r–th and s–th concomitant of record statistics of the resulting distribution have been derived. Single and product moments alongside the correlation coefficient have also been obtained. Recurrence relation for the single moments has also been obtained for the resulting distributions.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The object of this paper is to give a generalization of Gauss hypergeometric function, and to investigate its basic properties. Further, we define some fractional integral operators and their inverses in terms of the Mellin transform. Several well known integral operators, including Saigo operators can be derived from the results established here.

A Multivariate Latent Variable Model For Mixed – Data From Continuous And Ordinal Responses With Possibility Of Missing Responses, Ehsan B. Samani, M. Ganjali Dec 2010

A Multivariate Latent Variable Model For Mixed – Data From Continuous And Ordinal Responses With Possibility Of Missing Responses, Ehsan B. Samani, M. Ganjali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A joint model for multivariate mixed ordinal and continuous outcomes with potentially non-random missing values in both types of responses is proposed. A full likelihood-based approach is used to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters. Some modified Pearson residuals are also introduced where the correlation between responses are taken into account. The joint modelling of responses with the possibility of missing values requires caution since the interpretation of the fitted model highly depends on the missing mechanism assumptions that are unexaminable in a fundamental sense. A common way to investigate the influence of perturbations of model components on …

Bianchi Type I Magnetized Cosmological Model In Bimetric Theory Of Gravitation, M. S. Borkar, S. S. Charjan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we attempt to construct a Bianchi Type I magnetized cosmological model in Rosen’s bimetric theory of gravitation by using the techniques of Letelier and Stachel under the condition that ABCn , where n  0 in Rosen’s field equations. The physical and geometrical significance of the model are discussed. It is important to note the added dimension of this paper include the introduction of a magnetic field on the model. Prior to this, all it has been is a vacuum model in bimetric gravitation.

Application Of Differential Transform Method To The Generalized Burgers–Huxley Equation, J. Biazar, F. Mohammadi Dec 2010

Application Of Differential Transform Method To The Generalized Burgers–Huxley Equation, J. Biazar, F. Mohammadi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the differential transform method (DTM) will be applied to the generalized Burgers-Huxley equation, and some special cases of the equation, say, Huxley equation and Fitzhugh-Nagoma equation. The DTM produces an approximate solution for the equation, with few and easy computations. Numerical comparison between differential transform method, Adomian decomposition method and Variational iteration method for Burgers-Huxley, Huxley equation and Fitzhugh-Nagoma equation reveal that differential transform method is simple, accurate and efficient.

Particulate Suspension Blood Flow Through A Stenosed Catheterized Artery, V. P. Srivastava, Rochana Vishnoi, Poonam Sinha Dec 2010

Particulate Suspension Blood Flow Through A Stenosed Catheterized Artery, V. P. Srivastava, Rochana Vishnoi, Poonam Sinha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The flow of blood through a narrow catheterized artery with an overlapping stenosis has been investigated. To account for the presence of red cells, blood has been represented by a macroscopic two-phase model (i.e., a suspension of erythrocytes in plasma). The expression for the flow characteristics-the flow rate, the impedance (resistance to flow), the wall shear stress in the stenotic region, the shear stresses at the stenosis two throats and at critical height of the stenosis, has been derived. It is found that the impedance increases with the catheter size, with the hematocrit and also with the stenosis size (height …

A New Method For Fuzzy Critical Path Analysis In Project Networks With A New Representation Of Triangular Fuzzy Numbers, Amit Kumar, Parmpreet Kaur Dec 2010

A New Method For Fuzzy Critical Path Analysis In Project Networks With A New Representation Of Triangular Fuzzy Numbers, Amit Kumar, Parmpreet Kaur

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The method for finding fuzzy optimal solution of fully fuzzy critical path (FFCP) problems i.e., critical path problems in which all the parameters are represented by fuzzy numbers, is at best scant; possibly non-existent. In this paper, a method is proposed to find the fuzzy optimal solution of FFCP problems, together with a new representation of triangular fuzzy numbers. This paper will show the advantages of using, the proposed representation over the existing representations of triangular fuzzy numbers and will present with great clarity the proposed method and illustrate its application to FFCP problems occurring in real life situations.

Differential Transform Method For Nonlinear Parabolic-Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, J. Biazar, M. Eslami, M. R. Islam

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the present paper an analytic solution of non-linear parabolic-hyperbolic equations is deduced with the help of the powerful differential transform method (DTM). To illustrate the capability and efficiency of the method four examples for different cases of the equation are solved. The method can easily be applied to many problems and is capable of reducing the size of computational work.

Exact Solutions For The Kdv6 And Mkdv6 Equations Via Tanh-Coth And Sech Methods, Alvaro H. Salas, Cesar. A. Gómez S

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The tanh-coth method is used to seek solutions to obtain solutions to the new integrable sixthorder Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV6). Following the analogy between the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) and the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (MKdV) we construct a new system equivalent to KdV6 from which exact solutions to original equation and derived, during the sech method.

An Analytical Technique For Solving Nonlinear Heat Transfer Equations, Hossein Aminikhah, Milad Hemmatnezhad Dec 2010

An Analytical Technique For Solving Nonlinear Heat Transfer Equations, Hossein Aminikhah, Milad Hemmatnezhad

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, an analytic technique, namely the New Homotopy Perturbation Method (NHPM) is applied for solving the nonlinear differential equations arising in the field of heat transfer. In this method, the solution is considered as an infinite series expansion where converges rapidly to the exact solution. The nonlinear convective–radioactive cooling equation and nonlinear equation of conduction heat transfer with the variable physical properties are chosen as illustrative examples and the exact solutions have been found for each case.
