Improving Urban Stormwater Quality: Applying Fundamental Principles, Allen P. Davis, Robert G. Traver, William F. Hunt
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Urban stormwater runoff is a growing contributor to the impairment of surface waters. Nature-based technologies, including green roofs, vegetated swales, grassed filter strips, bioretention, and pervious pavements have been demonstrated to be effective in mitigating detrimental runoff characteristics. Lacking, however, has been a fundamental engineering analysis approach to these technologies. Current design guidance is based on empirical recommendations and most performance data are based on limited, localized observations. Flow balances, including infiltration, evapotranspiration and surface discharge, based on fundamental fluid dynamics principles can be employed through analysis to understand flow management. Water quality improvements will occur through a specific unit …

The Runoff Reduction Method (RRM) provides an innovative approach to crediting the total performance of stormwater best management practices (BMPs). Total BMP performance refers to the pollutant removal and runoff volume reduction capabilities. The RRM tracks the implementation of stormwater BMPs, including Low Impact Development (LID) strategies such as permeable pavement, rainwater harvesting, downspout disconnection, soil amendments, etc., and credits the appropriate runoff volume reduction, pollutant concentration reduction, or both towards compliance with stormwater quality and quantity requirements. By providing a mechanism to credit the volume reduction associated with these LID strategies the RRM also documents an allowable reduction of …

Stormwater best management practice is aimed at reducing potential downstream impacts on aquatic ecosystem health. Sediment basins, wetlands and ponds are commonly used in subtropical Australia for water-quality improvement; they also have the potential to enhance aquatic biodiversity in urbanised catchments. Two retrofit field sites in Brisbane, Australia were monitored for water quality and ecosystem health. The Golden Pond "wetland system" treatment train consisted of a sediment basin and two wetlands. The Bridgewater Creek "pond system", consisted of a sediment basin and five ponds. Suspended solids were reduced during wet weather, but increased during dry weather due to resuspension by …

Consistent Probabilities In Wheeler-Dewitt Quantum Cosmology, David A. Craig, Parampreet Singh

We give an explicit, rigorous framework for calculating quantum probabilities in a model theory of quantum gravity. Specifically, we construct the decoherence functional for the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with a free, massless, minimally coupled scalar field, thus providing a complete decoherent histories formulation for this quantum cosmological model. The decoherence functional is applied to study predictions concerning the model's Dirac (relational) observables; the behavior of semiclassical states and superpositions of such states; and to study the singular behavior of quantum Wheeler-DeWitt universes. Within this framework, rigorous formulas are given for calculating the corresponding probabilities from the …

In order to functionally interpret differentially expressed genes or other discovered features, researchers seek to detect enrichment in the form of overrepresentation of discovered features associated with a biological process. Most enrichment methods treat the p-value as the measure of evidence using a statistical test such as the binomial test, Fisher's exact test or the hypergeometric test. However, the p-value is not interpretable as a measure of evidence apart from adjustments in light of the sample size. As a measure of evidence supporting one hypothesis over the other, the Bayes factor (BF) overcomes this drawback of the p-value but lacks …

A record setting 24-hour rainstorm hit Chicago in September 2008. It created an opportunity to assess its impacts and to compare the storm water management with that used in other recent rainstorms. Flooding impacted all forms of transportation and thousands of homes and businesses, 10,000 homes had to be evacuated. One lesson learned is that this storm's magnitude was enhanced by urban and lake influences on the atmosphere that extended over the large suburban areas west of the city. This helped intensify the rainfall over a large area. A second lesson learned is when 6-hour and 24-hour rainfall amounts exceed …

The Swallow-tailed (Elanoides forficatus; STKI) and Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis; MIKI) both express relatively poor reproductive success in White River National Wildlife Refuge (WRNWR), east-central Arkansas. I studied the nesting ecology of both species in WRNWR to determine factors contributing to their low nest survival. I located 41 MIKI nests from 2008-2009 and documented 8 causes of nest failure. The overall estimated probability of nest survival was ~25%, but estimated daily nest survival varied between nest periods among and across years. I found no consistent predictors of nest survival among the variables I measured. Also, I determined snake excluder devices, …

Maintenance is imperative to preserve performance and extend useable life of stormwater treatment practices. Increased attention to mass balance, numerical goals, total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), and antidegradation requirements has created the need for more emphasis on stormwater treatment practice maintenance in order to meet permitting and reporting requirements. The purpose of this paper is to advance short and long-term maintenance considerations so as to develop more realistic maintenance plans. To do so, a municipal public works survey was developed, distributed, and the results were analyzed. The results of the survey revealed that most (61 percent) cities and counties perform …

The thermal stabilities and thermal decomposition for the metal halides, cadmium chloride and lead chloride with electropositive metals like Mn, Zn, Cr and Fe were studied at elevated temperatures using thermal analysis techniques, thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis using TG/DTA apparatus. The reactions of cadmium chloride and lead chloride with electropositive metals were conducted in Cu pans and found that Zinc metal may show a reaction with both CdCl2 and PbCl2; Manganese may not react with CdCl2 and may react with PbCl2; iron may react with CdCl2 but not with PbCl2 and chromium may not react with both the metal …

The purposes of this study was to (1) determine health-related and job-related fitness scores of Jonesboro, AR polices officers and (2) determine self-reported psychological stress levels of these officers. The fitness tests included blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), vertical jump, Illinois agility test, one-repetition bench press maximum, curl-up test, push-up test, twelve-minute run and trunk flexion test. Psychological stress was evaluated using operational and organizational stress surveys that were designed for use with law enforcement personnel. Members of the family Nereididae, including Nereis grubei, have a unique reproductive pattern among polychaetes- they reproduce a single time and possess a short larval period (4-5 days). This limits their potential to transmit their alleles to the next generation. Ocean currents also impact the magnitude and direction of gene flow. This study sampled 252 Nereis grubei from five coastal sites along southern California, two Channel Islands (Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina islands) and one central Mexico population using Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSRs). Integration Of Education, Scholarship, And Service Through Stormwater Management, Andrea L. Welker, Bridget M. Wadzuk, Robert G. Traver
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Education, scholarship, and service are the cornerstones of academia. This paper describes how the design, construction, and research of stormwater control measures on the campus of Villanova University has been used to integrate these three facets of academic life. To date, eleven stormwater control measures have been constructed on Villanova's campus. This paper will focus on how the authors have successfully used three of these stormwater control measures, a constructed stormwater wetland, a rain garden, and a porous asphalt/pervious concrete comparison study, to fulfil the university's commitments to education, scholarship, and service.

In response to water quality concerns in the Jordan Lake Reservoir and state and federal mandates, several cities in North Carolina are being required for the first time to reduce nutrient loads in stormwater from previously developed lands; that is, install retrofits. It is anticipated that similar requirements will become necessary for other urban areas in North Carolina. The goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of alternative approaches to stormwater management for existing developments within North Carolina cities. This investigation examined both the initial and renewed impact of an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device, using the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) approach, on an individual with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A within subject research design was utilized and consisted of a multiple baseline across behavior design in combination with a multiple baseline across device research design.This investigation included one child with ASD, and utilized an observation checklist of video recordings (Appendix A) to assess the communication behaviors of the participant.
