Phosphorylation is the most common and pleiotropic modification in biology, which plays a vital role in regulating and finely tuning a multitude of biological pathways. Transport across the nuclear envelope is also an essential cellular function and is intimately linked to many degeneration processes that lead to disease. It is therefore not surprising that phosphorylation of cargos trafficking between the cytoplasm and nucleus is emerging as an important step to regulate nuclear availability, which directly affects gene expression, cell growth and proliferation. Role For Sumoylation In Systemic Inflammation And Immune Homeostasis In Drosophila Larvae, Indira Paddibhatla, Mark J. Lee, Marta E. Kalamarz, Roberto Ferrarese, Shubha Govind

To counter systemic risk of infection by parasitic wasps, Drosophila larvae activate humoral immunity in the fat body and mount a robust cellular response resulting in encapsulation of the wasp egg. Innate immune reactions are tightly regulated and are resolved within hours. To understand the mechanisms underlying activation and resolution of the egg encapsulation response and examine if failure of the latter develops into systemic inflammatory disease, we correlated parasitic wasp-induced changes in the Drosophila larva with systemic chronic conditions in sumoylation-deficient mutants. Air-Sea Turbulent Flux Measurements And Their Relationship To The Turbulent Kinetic Energy Dissipation Rate In The Ocean, Silvia Gremes-Cordero

A study of the turbulent transfer of properties across the ocean surface and the dissipation of the energy transferred to the upper ocean is here presented. Two experiments were analyzed, both conducted during summer in the North Atlantic during phytoplankton blooms. The Marine Aerosol Production from marine sources (MAP) experiment, performed during summer of 2004, allowed for the calculation of the air-sea turbulent fluxes of momentum and humidity in high wind conditions. This analysis aims to improve the parameterization of air-sea turbulent fluxes, fundamental for coupled atmospheric-ocean models. What is the motivation for acting environmentally? Why do people care? What is the reason for buying fluorescent bulbs and hybrid cars, energy efficient appliances and reusable water bottles? Why is it that people turn off the lights when they leave a room, turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth, and go through the inconvenience of recycling?
Humans are known to act out of self-interest. Regardless of what people do or why they do it, their motivation can always be traced back to personal gain.

The purpose of this article is to examine the impact of social changes over the last two decades in Cameroon. The data for this study are from the 2004 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) (Enquête Démographique et de Santé au Cameroun [EDSC-III]), the third DHS carried out in Cameroon. The first one was in 1991. The 1991Cameroon DHS is a sample of 3871 women aged between 15 and 49 years. The EDSC-III was carried out from February to August 2004 and covered 10,462 households, 10,656 women aged 15–49 years, and 5280 men aged 15–59 years. Logistic regression was used to …
